4 libraries on 1 iMac HDD fallin' apart

Hi There!
I have an iMac 2.1 Ghz PowerPc G5 with 2.5GB in RAM and running OS X 10.4.11
I've created (since I bought it) 2 users (for my wife and myself) and we have Aperture and iPhoto libraries for each user.
What would be the best way to consolidate them and back them up on an external hard-disk?
My iMac is getting slower by the day and I'm affraid the internal HDD might die and live us without pics.
Ideally, I would like to end up with one Aperture Library and one iPhoto library, living on an external hard disk and from there, access it using either our iMac (emptied from a lot of files) and our MacBook Pro.
Any suggestions? Any similar experiences?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Sincerely,
Gilberto.

Hi Gilberto
I think your priority is to get your data, or copies of it off your iMac
First the Hardware
Last week I purchased through Amazon two 2TB WD Green SATA HDD's ~£60 each and a couple of Lacie USB Empty cases £16 each (the black one by Neil Poulton)
You can easily remove and replace HDD's into these cases with care and they are held in place with four screws.
I am assuming you only have a 250 GB drive on your iMac and similar on your MBP so 1TB drives would be adequate but they are not much cheaper
The software I would recommend is SuperDuper from Shirt Pocket its free
http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
You can use it to make a Clone of your system drive and for a small fee you can get the version that also allows you to schedule backups their documentation is enlightening.
I would partition one of the Drives to give two partitions a 250GB partition and the second what's left,  its easy to do and they will appear as two HDD on your screen.
(As you have a MBP it might be as well to get another HDD and just make it two partitions and place a clone of your imac in one and your MBP in the other this is what I have done with my MBP and MacMini )
When you plug the new drive in you will get a warning message just select initialise and it will launch the Disc Utility.
If not go to Applications / Utilities /Disc Utility.app  and creat the Partitions (Virtual Drives)
Then use SuperDuper to create a bootable Clone of your system drive onto the 250GB partition and name it say  iMacClone.
Next use Aperture to write a Vault  and iPhoto however it stores its library to the large partition on the external HDD.
In your situation I would consider having my Aperture working library on your second external Hard Drive and a copy of the iPhoto library (I use superficaly but am not familiar with how iPhoto backs up)
If you find the USB drive is too slow for your working Aperture Library  then you could consider using a Fire wire drive which is as fast as you're going to get without possibly using eSATA on your MBP both expensive options.
Then disconnect your first external drive i.e. the one with the clone on keep that in a safe place
My way of working is
1.  Make a bootable Clone of machines system drive  so you can reinstate your internal HDD data if it becomes corrupt or run off the external if it needs to be replaced. or even use a borrowed machine of similar spec
2. Make copies (BackUp and or Vaults) of your Data files preferably two
2b. Keep one in a different location
3. Have a routine to update so you always have current back up copies
You don't need to buy two USB cases but I would suggest you buy at least two HDD's
If you use bare drives take care with them, I store them inside the antistatic bag with silica gel sachet they came in, inside old VHS cases (plastic ones) a little padding will be required.
Hope this helps
Phil

  • IMac G3 Take Apart

I have been considering taking apart my iMac G3 600 Mghz "snow". The screen is very bad and i think it will die very soon. I plan to put it in a new case and use it as a server, but i had a few quesitons. If I take it apart what precautions should i take and is it even worth it at all? Would there be any danger involved in it? I plan on taking out the Logic board, Power Supply, CD Drive, HardDrive, down-converter someting and any other parts that are necessary to run.
What are you thoughts on this?

You could try to locate the service and repair manual for your iMac on the Internet. I think the name is
imac_summer01.pdf. AppleRescue has this manual for sale. See: http://applerescue.com/
    Check out this site:
    Take apart guide
    iMac HDD Upgrade Guide (Slot-Loading)
    Warning:
The power supply is just a logic board and it isn't separately enclosed like a pc power supply. And the power supply is next to the crt and crt contains dangerous/fatal voltages even after powering off your machine!

  • Is there a way to run a external ssd with my mid 2011 iMac hdd in a raid configuration and basically have a fusion drive

is there a way to run a external ssd with my mid 2011 iMac hdd in a raid configuration and basically have a fusion drive

A Fusion Drive is not a RAID; it's a CoreStorage logical volume group. While it's technically possible to do as you suggest, there would be little or no benefit from it.

no you should transcode those files into an format that os suitable for editing. Like proRez. Although you might need some Flip4Mac or perian or something to do the conversion.

  • Aluminum Mid-2007 iMac HDD upgrade-will a 7200 WD Bla cause any heat issues

My iMac currently has a 250GB Factory 5200rpm HDD, and is off of warranty. I am running out of space and I need to upgrade. I have picked out a Western Digital 1TB Caviar Black 7200rpm SATA II w/ 32MB Cache. I have heard this HDD model runs hot sometimes, and my concern is do I need to worry about heat issues? I have seen iMacs with burned screens from heat. I have never upgraded a Aluminum iMac HDD before and any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks

You could download smcFanControl and independently regulate the fan speeds more efficiently to compensate for the increased heat by increasing the airflow through your iMac. Especially from the HDD fan.

  • TimeMachine or RAID with internal iMac HDD?

I am thinking of getting an external SSD for use as my boot disk and then connecting it via Thunderbolt. Presently I have a 72rpm HDD and it's showing it's age, but it's 1TB and so will the external SSD, the move is purely for speed, on top of this I have an external 1TB HDD which I interface via tryst ol' USB2 and use that for TimeMachine back-up.
My question is whether to cut the chord with the external USB 2 HDD and use the internal HDD as a TimeMachine instead when running from SSD?
Either than or keep the external HDD as a TimeMachine back-up and use a RAID configuration so that if anything were to happen I could pickup from where I left off, but not sure about the performance hit, or if I could even do that (i.e. RAID from external Thunderbolt SSD to internal iMac HDD)?
There is another option and that would be that the Thunderbolt connected enclosure will have two bays and so I could fit in an affordable HDD for one of these suggestions. The benefit being that I would be able to forfeit one of the mains plugs (1TB is never going to be Bus driven!) and use it for the Thunderbolt enclosure.
I suppose my main concerns would be how to et up RAID with the different storage systems and if it would work, as well as the performance hit, I'm not sure what suffers when connecting SSD to HDD and having a real time backup system, if it's even worth it? I am making the SSD move for speed after all.

I forgot to mention that I may also consider encrypting my backup or RAID drive, any thoughts on that too?

  • Merge iphoto libraries onto an external HDD

We have 3 macs at the house and they all have different Iphoto libraries. I would like to merge them all onto the one Library of the Imac with an External HDD. The problem is that a bunch of the pictures are on more than one of the computers. I was hoping that there was a way to import them but not import the duplicates like when I import from a camera.

You'll need to use iPhoto Library Manager to merge the Libraries. There is no other way to do it without losing versions or metadata.

  • 27" iMac HDD spins up two times on startup

    Hi,
the HDD of my 5 month old 27" iMac i7 audibly spins up two times when starting the machine - and is reproducible on every startup. It's like it looses power after the first spin-up, starts to spin down, and when the drive is nearly stopped - spins up again (and then boots flawlessly from then on). The iMac is currently at an authorized Apple service provider, who tells me that that's totally normal behavior for harddrives - and that's just plainly not true. Not one single iMac in the family and no PC i ever possessed over the last 20 years has EVER shown that kind of behavior...
What should i do? Call Apple again or go to a different service provider? It's kind of ridiculous to live with stuff like that after shelling out more than 2k euros!
ps: It's a 1TB drive, but i haven't written down the brand before giving the iMac to 'repair'...

One of my LaCie externals has this same defect. I fully agree with you it's clear it is faulty since I own many other LaCie of the same type and it's the only one that does it.
My faulty LaCie has never caused any other trouble apart from that, though.
Still, if for LaCie it is already quite questionable, for Apple there should be no question, at least if they still value their (so deserved) good reputation:
this is a faulty hard drive, that's it.

  • Is there a way to use music from multiple users itunes libraries on one iMac for a slideshow in Aperture?

I am trying to put together a slide show for a trip my wife and I took to England. I would like to be able to use music from both our itunes libraries in the slide show. I am using Aperture to create the slide show since it seems to be more versatile than iPhoto for this. Only trouble is that when I log into my username on the iMac I only see my iTunes library and similar when logging into her username. We have different music but would like to use some from each library in the slide show.

You can only use one library at a time in an Aperture slideshow, so I'd suggest to simply collect the audio that you want to use in a folder (export the songs from both iTunes Libraries) and then import this folder to Aperture. Now you have a project containing the audio files; you will see it in the Aperture Audio section of the audio Browser, right above the iTunes section.
You can use the Apperture audio just like the audio in iTunes to drag to the timeline of your slideshow.

  • Help! pc to new iMac - HDD not 'seen' on pc... ethernet cable issue too!

    Hi all
I just got my new iMac a few days ago and I've tried the ethernet cable and my mac can see the folders on the pc but wont open them! (the original item cannot be found)
my ethernet cable isn't linked to the mac now but I can still see my computer in finder... both have the wireless going.. how do I 'choose' the ethernet cable.. maybe that's why it's not working?
I've now got a western digital Studio edition 500mb external harddrive - I've plugged that into the mac and all is well... I was hoping I could then plug it into the pc and drag all the files over (65gigs) and then I can transfer them to the mac.
I've used the usb cable on the pc (doesn't have firewire) and the pc does nothing!
I can't see it and I've tried clicking on the removable disc drives but it says there's nothing connected.
I know that the HDD is formatted for macs but if I format it for pcs then will I have the issue of transferring the files to the mac after?
I'm totally confused and this is driving me nuts!
the only other option I have left is to burn billions of dvds with my images and music. sob I really don't want to do that!
I would like to be able to sync my ipod and iphone to the mac and not qet my music wiped! and to get my old crappy pc off my desk.
someone heeeeeeellllllpppp please... will be very happy to get this sorted! my poor little old brain is fried!

    Thank you!
I literally just got the same info from a friend (he was away for most of the weekend) and I'm now in the process of copying the pc stuff onto the hard drive (after formatting)
transferred one pic and tried transferring it the mac and it worked... YAY!
so now back to transferring everything from the pc to the HDD now... gonna take a while but at least now I'm on the way off getting rid of the pc
Thanks for your help and response.
    (very relieved!)

  • Recovering user profiles and applications from old iMac HDD

Wanting to upgrade my 2007 24" iMac, I replaced the HDD with a SSD and did a fresh install of Mt Lion. The goal is to transfer applications and usere profiles back to the iMac from the old drive. I want to keep personal files (doc, pix, ect) on the old drive that is connect via USB in an external case. Can this be done.
I do not have a backup of the drive either. Can I do this now that it is in a box?
    Thank you for your support.
    Tom D.

You can use Migration Assistant to move all the stuff to the new Mac. Don't create any user accounts, just let Migration Assistant do that by itself. Just point MA to the attached drive.
I'm not sure what you mean by keeping personal files on the old drive.
They will remain there after the migration, but the documents will be copied to the new computer.
If you want to set up the Home folders to to the external, then I can't help. There is no way to use Migration assistant to set up the users, but not transfer data. It can just transfer Applications, though. Sometimes, I think it is better to reinstall those from scratch, too.
The only way I could see doing that would be to just transfer applications, set up  all new accounts, then use the Users & Groups System Prefs to set the Home folder to the external. Again, I don't know how to do this properly.

  • Combining two music libraries on one iMac

Hi, I have about an 80 GB iTunes music library on my iMac.  My new wife has a library of about 130 GB which is currently on  an external hard drive.   I want to combine both libraries on one iTunes account on our iMac.  First, what is the best way to combine the two libraries into one big library in iTunes AND avoid having hundreds of duplicate albums and songs once they are combined in iTunes (we have the same taste in music)?  Thanks!

Combining them is easy but you will have to weed out the duplicates manually.
Boot iTunes (ideally on a second computer but you can do this on the main one) while holding the option key. You will be asked to select a library: choose your wife's.
Create a playlist. Drag all the songs you want to copy over to the playlist, avoiding the duplicates.
If you've done this on a second computer, now go to your main computer and open iTunes to this library in the same way. Create a folder on your Desktop, select the entire contents of the playlist and drag to this folder. Wait for it to copy.
Now boot iTunes while holding the option key again and choose your own Library. Drag the contents of the folder to your Music list.
If any of your wife's songs are 'Protected AACs' you will need to authorise your computer for her account as well. Go to the iTunes Store and log out. Log in with her account name and authorise the computer. You can log into either account to purchase.
