4 month old 13" will not boot

Hello all,
My brother bought a 13" MBP back in September. He hasn't had any problems with it (except for Flash working intermittently) until now, but this is something I've never seen before.
He brought it home from university halfway through December and told me he couldn't get Flash working. I should probably point out he doesn't really know how to sort these problems out, so what followed was a bit strange. He tried installing Flash again, then uninstalled it, tried again, then for some reason used Appzapper to delete the installer... Appzapper unexpectedly quit during this, then apparently the MBP became very, very slow to respond to anything.
The first thing I did was attempt to verify the permissions, but Disk Utility hung almost immediately. Then I booted the MBP off of a Snow Leopard disc (a shop bought one, not the one that came with the MBP) to run the Apple Hardware Test; this came back fine, no problems reported.
I then tried booting off the SL disc to run Disk Utility, and the strangest thing happened: I got the kernel panic screen (the one informing you to force shutdown your computer in several languages) at the booting screen, about 10 seconds after the chime while the spinning loading icon was still spinning. This was strange, I've been using Macs for around 16 years and I've never seen that.
I tried booting it off the internal hard drive again; this still worked, but it was still very unresponsive. I reset the P and NVRAM, this didn't help. I tried safe booting it (holding shift while booting); a progress bar came up, got about 1/10th of the way through, disappeared and then it kernel panicked again.
Then I used Target Disk Mode on the laptop to use Disk Utility on my Mac Pro to verify the disk, this came back with errors (invalid file count and something else), but Disk Utility claimed to have fixed it. For some reason I was unable to verify the permissions, though. I backed up his files while I had it Target Disked, then booted my Pro off the Snow Leopard disc. From here I still couldn't verify the permissions, so I went ahead and installed SL on the MBP's hard drive through firewire (I hope you're still following!). My Pro then rebooted off of the MBP's hard drive, and everything was fine; his system was untouched and perfectly responsive.
So with the fresh SL installation I rebooted his MBP, and guess what: It no longer wanted to boot; it just kernel panics straight away. I used the same method to zero all the data on the MBP's hard drive and reinstalled SL from scratch, and it still won't boot.
After all this I can only conclude that this is a hardware issue. I was under the impression that the chime indicated that the processor had been found, so I presume it's not a logic board fault. The optical drive worked (when I first target disked it to my Pro the SL disc was still in the drive and showed up on the Pro), the battery is apparently fine, no doubt the hard drive still works...
Could it be the memory? More to the point, would his warranty be void if we were to open it up to reseat the RAM? I presume you just take the bottom plate off? If that's all it is then we could save a trip to the Kingston Apple store...
Cheers!

A few things: first, RAM is customer installable, so no, you don't void the warranty by reseating the memory, as long as that's all you do.
I normally would have said, oh yeah, sounds like the hard drive, except it seems to boot your computer in target disk mode, which is odd. I'd say given that TDM works to boot another machine, the HDD is probably not the cause, nor the HDD flex cable (which connects HDD to logic board).
It could always be a logic board issue, though you're right, the chime does indicate a basic level of functionality. This means the Power On Self Test (POST) has passed, and means the processor is able to detect and address the memory. The logic board is a lot more complex than what the POST checks quickly, however, so the logic board isn't ruled out by the fact that the computer chimes.
Memory is always a possibility, especially if the first symptom was flash not working. The graphics chipset could also be a possible cause.
You've got a few options for troubleshooting. I'll list what I'd do in order, and you can try whatever you feel up to.
First, I'd boot the machine from its internal drive in verbose mode. Do this by powering it on, then holding command + V down till you see white text on a black screen. This will boot the machine normally, but it will show you what it's doing. The advantage of this is that if/when it panics, you can see the panic log. If it's booting far enough, we might be able to see what it's getting stuck on. Anything graphics related, like SystemUIServer or anything referencing nvidia could indicate RAM or graphics. This would likely mean the computer is panicking when hardware video acceleration is kicking in, about when you'd see the blue screen during boot. If it panics pretty early in the boot sequence, you might not see anything helpful in the panic log.
If this is inconclusive, the next thing I'd do is test booting the machine with individual sticks of RAM installed. Make sure you're grounded, or that you're able to reasonably ensure you won't be shocking the computer or any of its PCBs. Don't work on carpet, don't wear polyester or fleece or have any nonconductors like styrofoam or plastics around, and touch something metal to discharge any static electric charge your body may have before touching the RAM.
The next thing I'd try would be to run the Apple Hardware Test. You can do this by powering on the machine, then holding down D on the keyboard for about 30 seconds. This is a test that runs in EFI (firmware) and has no video acceleration, so if the computer chimes and has video, you should be able to run it. You'll want to check the box to run extended testing, then walk away for an hour or two. If it comes back with an error code, you can take that to AppleCare or your nearest Apple Store and they'll know what hardware component to replace.
If all else fails, you'll probably have to take it in. It sounds like you've ruled out software though, which means you've got a hardware problem either way, so whether you want to troubleshoot it or let Apple do so is up to you.

  • IMac will not boot up. Need to transfer data iMac (2006) iMac (2009)

    I have an iMac (built/sold late 2006 -400  Firewire) and an iMac (built/sold late 2009 - 800 Firewire).
I have connected computers with a 400 to 800 Firewire cable.
The old iMac will not boot to desktop. It was suggested to hold down the "T" key and then power up the iMac. This was done and the old iMac shows a "Y" shaped icon that appears to be a Firewire icon. The old iMac does not show up on the desktop of the new iMac.
I would like to transfer data from the old iMac to the newer one. Suggestions ?
    Thanks.
    old iMac OS 10.4.xx
    new iMac OS 10.9.2

She's holding T down on the old computer.
Which is the way it has to be done. The old computer's hard drive will mount on the new computer.
To use FireWire target disk mode
Make sure that the target computer is turned off.
If you are using an Apple portable computer such as a PowerBook or MacBook as the target computer, plug in its AC power adapter.
Use a FireWire cable to connect the target computer to a host computer. The host computer can be powered on.
Start up the target computer and immediately press and hold down the T key until the FireWire icon appears. The hard disk of the target computer should become available to the host computer and will likely appear on desktop. (If the target computer is running Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger, you can also open System Preferences, choose Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. Restart the computer and it will start up in Target Disk Mode.)
When you are finished copying files, locate the target computer's hard disk icon on the desktop of the host computer and drag it to the Trash or choose Eject (or Put Away) from the File menu.
Press the target computer's power button to turn it off.
    Unplug the FireWire cable.
    (my emphasis).

You won't lose any data unless you erase your hard drive.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c"key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it.When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've selected the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.

  • Intel iMac will not boot past gray screen

Intel iMac will not boot past gray screen
    my system:
new (month old) 24" intel imac, 2.8 ghz, 4 gb ram.
running: leopard (upgraded from tiger, which was pre-installed at purchase), installed 10.5.1 update right before this huge problem occurred.
install discs on-hand: two-disc tiget set, single leopard upgrade disc.
    what led to this:
i wanted to install windows using bootcamp on a 50 gb partition.
at this point i was running leopard 10.5
i followed all bootcamp instructions, printing out the guide, as well. once i got into the windows setup, i was prompted to choose a partition to install windows. unlike the bootcamp guide, which showed three partitions, one clearly labeled "bootcamp", i saw only one partition. not wanting to risk writing over my mac partition, i quit the setup and rebooted the mac os. after some googling around, i looked for firmware updates (didn't need any), and then software updates. i decided to try updating to 10.5.1.
i then ran through boot camp again, deleting my previous windows partition, creating a new one, and moving forward as before. once again, i was only shown one partition to choose from in the windows setup. i exited the setup again to reboot through the mac os, but this time, i was only given a blank gray screen.
here's what i have tried so far:
booting from a CD, holding down the C or D keys: no response (in fact, i have to restart the computer holding down the mouse button to be able to eject the CD)
booting with option key held down: gray screen
booting with option key held down with external bootable firewire drive attached: the firewire drive appears as a boot icon, and i can click on it within a five second window, but then the screen freezes after that time period, and nothing changes
booting into target mode while attached to another mac: gray screen (no firewire icon, and drive never shows up on other mac)
resetting NVRAM: i'm able to hear the boot chimes, but no difference in performance. gray screen every time
Safe boot: nothing but a gray screen
    Verbose mode: gray screen
    Single user mode: gray screen
Single user mode with firewire drive attached: occasionally (not every time), i am able to get the white on black terminal to show up. from here, i'm able to run fsck, but it appears to only be checking the firewire drive. i have tried several times to boot from here, and once it took me to a blue screen with movable arrow cursor, but it never went beyond this.
is there anything else left to try before taking it to apple?
any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd call Apple support at this point. You'll need
to put this issue on the record.
Call U.S. iPod and Mac technical support: 1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273)
The wait may be long for an agent to come on the line
so expect that and have some other stuff to do in the meantime.
If you have the applecare protection plan, I'd ask about "onsite"
    service.
I like your work ! Good luck !

  • Mac Pro will not boot - HD and Machine are fine.

Greetings, and thank you in advance for your wisdom.
I have a 12-core Mac Pro, and she has been running like a dream. Once a month I run Onyx. Yesterday I did the same and upon reboot I got the grey apple screen and the spinning progress wheel that never stops spinning.
    1. I repaired the HD via Disk Utility. All is fine.
    2. The contents of the start-up drive are accessible - so the drive itself is not physically damaged.
    3. I installed a new HD and made a copy of this Start-up disk via the Disk Utility. It will not boot from this drive as well.
    4. I installed Snow Leopard (still using this) on the new drive to make sure the computer was happy. It fires up fine.
    5. Everything is disconnected from the Mac Pro
So, I have obvious, and idiotically damaged the start-up disk using Onyx (assumption).
My life would be much better knowing I could do something that would enable me to boot from my current start-up and that's where I seek your wisdom.
Another question would be: If the above is not possible, if I install a fresh OS on the new drive, and then begin to replace all of the folders from the old drive (applications, library, etc.) will I be able to access my files as I did before. My issue is that I use this for music production, and there are literally close to 100 plugins that all have been registered. Going back through that process again would be days of labor, as some of these were purchases years ago. Tracking down serials would be a task. I think you understand.
So any advice that might prevent me from having to do as I said above will be wonderful.
    Thank you all so much.
    Lance

Under some circumstances, you may need to reinstall Mac OS X. You can reinstall Mac OS X while keeping your files and user settings intact.
    from:
Mac OS X 10.6: Reinstalling Mac OS X
If your Hardware is functioning correctly, and your disk has no un-repaired Directory problems [Hint: run Disk Utility ( Repair Disk ) first] then re-installing Mac OS X modifies ONLY the files that are part of Mac OS X. Your Added Applications, User files (which contain preferences and serial numbers) are not supposed to be touched.

  • Slow and now will not boot

I have a 10 month old 20 imac, and it had been running a little slow and was going to upgraded the memory in the next week. But now it will not boot at all.
Last night it locked up I restarted and verified the disc, it passed. All the hardware passed. I started to try and back up my file from thecomputer and came up with file unreadable then it locked up again and now it will not boot. It chimes shows the apple screen then freezes on the blue screen. I have tried the safe boot, to run the test from the install disc, boot from the disc and all I get is a blue screen..
I seem to be reading about what seem to be a lot of the I macs suddenly slowing down, and from what I am gathering it seems MAC may have a batch of hard drives that fail around the year mark, with no warning until complete failure.
    Does anybody have any suggestions

    Hi CC
I have a 7 month old 20" iMac and have had no problems. Suffice to say, you should definitely take your 10 month old back to where you bought it. Locking up and freezes and it passed the AHT sounds scary.
    Return it.

  • My 13" MacBook Pro will not boot up - all I get is blank screen

The MacBook Pro is only 10 months old and is up to date on all OSX updates. I have been using it all day and suddenly this evening it just went to a blank screen and will not boot up. No fan, nothing. Nada.
    I have tried the following:
checked magsafe and it is clean of any dirt
checked battery (pressed button on side of Macbook and got 6 green lights coming up)
There are no USB peripherals connected
tried pressing CMD+CNTRL+Start button and nothing happended
tried holding down start button for 30 seconds
The mac has not been dropped or had water on it.
    Any other ideas?
    Cheers

  • Pavilion DV6 1320sl stopped working and will not boot

Pavillion DV6 1320 was beiing used.  Had been running hot - fan was on all the time. The left mouse pad button was pushed and the screen went black with a blinking cursor. It will not boot.  There have been no software or hardware changes, a nd it hasn't been dropped.  Win  7 64 bit is installed and it has run OK since new in 2009.  There are no error messages.  Turning off the machine is with i single depress of the power button.
Turning machine on disk=plays BIOS message to sel esc to enter BIOS.  From BIOS, system check of memory, hard disk and hard disk SMART have been run.  All passed.
No other BIOS function works - ie f9, f8 ,or f11 all do nothing.
I ran the hard reset to no avail.  The buttons glow but the screen remains black with blinking cursor.  I followed the HP guideline for trouble shooting a black screen with glowing buttons.  Didn't help.  swapped each memory bank and tried each possible bank configuration.  Didn't help.  Replaced the RTC battery and reset BIOS to default.  Didn't help.  Hooked up another monitor but that didn't help either.
I did not try system restore, but f11 doesn't work and booting from cd was unclear as to results - I didn't have  a boot disk so I used disk 1 of the restore set.  Nothing happened.
I used canned air to blow out the cooling holes but they didn't seem clogged (although the fan was on much of the time these past few months).
I'd appreciate any ideas.  Perhaps a component has been burned.  What would be the visible symptoms of a CPU failure?  What about the chip set - if the Northbridge fails, what would it look like?
I don't think it has actually loaded and is a video chip failure but who knows?  I'm open to suggestions.

  • HP G62 Will Not Boot With Power Cord Plugged In

I have an HP G62 laptop that is about four years old. I've had a couple of problems with it before that were resolved relatively satisfactorily, however five or six months ago I started having a new issue. The laptop will not boot with the charging cord plugged in, whether there is a battery in it or not. Nor will it return from sleep mode (screen black, status light on the power button flashing) with the charging cord plugged in, whether there is a battery in it or not. It simply shuts down and I end up with an error screen the next time I boot up. I have tried other charging cords and it has been the same, however the cord will still charge the battery. This means I have to charge the battery, unplug the cord, boot up the computer. This annoyance is worsened by the fact that the battery  is old and unable to  hold charge for very long at all and I fear one day even the battery won't be enough to boot the computer. Can I fix the power cord issue? Should I buy a new battery? Or let my computer give up the ghost and scrounge for a new one? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the charger input could possibly need replaced and/or the charger

  • 3rd generation 15GB ipod will not boot

My third(3rd) generation 15GB iPod (A1050) will not boot. First it felt like the battery was just dead. Resetting the iPod using menu+play for 6 seconds gives me the apple logo and then the battery w/triangle/exclamation point error. I tried a new battery but that didn't change anything. I tried charging it using AC and USB, but that didn't seem to help... I don't have a firewire cable so I can't try that.
Finally I tried to boot the iPod without the battery. I'm not sure if it's suppose to be able to do that. Well, this one doesn't so I'm not sure if I've exonerated the battery or if I just have a red herring.
Visual inpection of the inside looks like all the cables are connected firmly and I don't see any obvious broken solder joints.
Another point is that when I plug the iPod into my usb drive the WinXP machine doesn't see it. I use the same WinXP machine to synch with a 1 month old Nano so I know that usb port works and I do have itunes loaded.
Any advice on what I can try next?

Did you buy yours used as well? I think we may need to look into buying a dock and being mad at whoever sold it to us without one.

I did read on another post here to try to reinstall the os, however when I try to install over the operating system it says I am trying to install an older os and it will not let me install in the same volume....  Although I am confident I have all the data on backups as well have timemachine backups, I would rather not have to erase and install this machine.
Any insight to this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I found that I had a bad harddrive, or at least that is what I think happened..  I did have a time machine backup as well, although in hindsight, I should have made some manual backups of my open directory and the databases hosted on the server.  In any case I ended up purchasing "server grade" harddrives and reinstalling the OS on to the new blank hard drives, I was then able to recover from my time machine backup, however, I did have the issue of the restore going over 100%, I tried this several times and the same result with no end after hours and hours.   After reading through various forums I found that clicking the mouse button for about 10 minutes straight once it hit 100% finally worked, I was lucky that the Time machine backup had good data on it since I have read several posts saying that Time machine doesn;t backup directoies or any "open files" very well, however I had no problems after recovering from the backup.  I do however now backup or archive my directory everyday, and I rely on Filemaker to backup its own databases, however I still use time machine as well...
