4 of 6 Macs on Cat5 LAN Network drop connection because of loose cable?

Ok, where to start.
We have 6 Macs on our network, 4 of which are Power Macs G5s with OSX 10.4.10, the other two are newer MacPro's.
The 4 Power Macs loose the network connection at random times(not all 4 at the same time), after replacing the entire infrastructure (Switch, DCHP/Static addresses, router, patch cable, etc) we still have this problem.
After much trouble shooting we finally could recreate the problem, when opening the Network Utility and monitoring the link status active/inactive state we could get this status to switch by just slightly bumping the Cat5 cable on all 4 computers. Yes we have replaced all cables with store bought patch cables.
All 4 computers were bought over a years time, not at the same time. And no, Apple support has been of very little help, they just say they have never seen this problem before and thats about it. (3 hours on the phone for that)
These are the only 4 computers on the network having the problem in a mixed windows, mac enviroment.
As of this moment we are buying replacemnt PCIe network cards to try to resolve this problem.
Anyone else ever seen this? Could it be a wide spread design flaw in the Power Mac G5's?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
DM

A lot of times PC cards do work in Macs without saying so, but no idea which PCIe ones do.
Did run across "Yukon 88E8056 Ethernet" which if I read correctly can be made to work in a Mac...

And if you can find where to get one, it should be cheap since it was chosen for tje $100 Laptop project...

  • S20 Lan Network drops out after Windows 10 upgrade

Upgrade went ok and everything seems to work ok, but the network drops out after some downloads. Adapter gets disabled and cannot be enabled unless i perform a reboot. The network adapter is a Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet. Installed the latest Lenovo System Update but that did not find any new drivers.

The network speed went down from approx 50 Mbps to 1.8 Mbps after the upgrade! So it is surely a network driver problem.

  • AirPort network dropping connection at least twice a day

I'm running an AirPort network and guest network version 7.6.4 - Time Capsule serves as my router, extreme and express as my extenders.  At least twice a week, my AirPort Network drops wi-fi connectivity.  It's annoying and frustrating as often I'm using a VIOP line for work conference calling and or using web meeting services.  The wi-fi droppage requires me to un/re plug the time capsule - the only fix I've found.  Doing this corrects the issue until the next drop.  Usually a couple of days...
Is there a permanent fix I can use that I don't know about?  I was under the impression my AirPort Network "would just work"

Since the Thunderbolt Display has been released I have seen this issue on literally hundreds of display/laptop combinations. With and without the extension cable. I have not found any logic around the issue, trying different usb/thunderbolt ports, different sleep settings, power settings. This is a legitmate issue that should be addressed and Apple is not addressing it -- or can't address it. BTW-There is NO reason to engineer a product with an extension cable needed to operate the peripheral. The only way to solve this is to burn a USB port on your laptop. I am fairly certain the issue is power related over the Thunderbolt bus. However, I have also experienced issues with USB3 hubs on macs. So maybe it is a larger power issue.
Anyway, an Apple wired keyboard should just work out of the box.

  • Could wifi with a university network drop often because of a 5ghz band connection?

    Hey guys,
I've been having wifi issues at my school/work (same location) with the connection dropping randomly. It seems to happen several times an hour. I purchased a MBA months ago and had no problems with wifi connectivity till recently. My school has acquired a new access point in the facility. It was right around the release of Mavericks. So now I've become unclear on whether it's the network or the new OS. Anyways, the network is WPA 2 enterprise with dual-band connectivity. This past week I have done my fair share of studying on dual-band technology and now understand perks and downfalls to 2.4ghz versus 5ghz bands. That reading was due to a connection issue at home. However, today I finally realized that I was connected to the 5ghz band at work/school by using the option key and clicking the wifi icon. After browsing through several forums, I was still unsure if A) the 5ghz band was responsible for wifi dropping, and B) Whether or not I could disable the wifi from defaulting to the 5ghz and use 2.4ghz as a solution instead.
Since I could not find answers to those two questions I have tried the following...
I changed the MTU to "1453" since it's the so-called "magic number" for mac's. And yes, so far it is the magic number because the wifi has not dropped once since applying it. I'm still standing by, convinced it will drop. Wireless diagnostics is currently monitoring if it does. Typically I use the ethernet adapter so I don't have to worry about any of this. That's a fix, but not the one I'm looking for. It's flat out annoying! I know I can try renewing the DHCP lease as well. I haven't done it yet because I'm seeing if the MTU was the sole source of the problem. I've already performed basic troubleshooting and like usual it didn't solve anything. That's not to say that restarting doesn't cover a higher percentage of issues!
Honestly the MTU change could be the end of my problems, but I'd still like some insight on my two questions in the first paragraph. Any guidance is strongly appreciated. I've been loving my mac and the community since I made the switch not too long ago. I'm just still familiarizing myself with everything. Thanks in advance for any help!

    That's correct.
When it's unable to obtain an IP address from a DHCP server, machines are supposed to self-assign themselves an address from the 169.254.x.x range.
This is so that you can, for example, connect two machines with an Ethernet cable or via Wi-Fi without the need for a DHCP server and the two machines will be able to talk to each other.
(If you care, you can read the technical details here.)
So the big question here is why your machine is failing to obtain an address via DHCP, and it sounds like an issue with the DHCP servers on your network.
If you want to read more than you probably would ever want to know about how one campus is dealing with similar issues, you can here.)

  • NSS3000 Very slow network, Drops connection

I am working with an NSS3000 that has some major network issues.  The device is on  a 100mb network.  Copying a 4mb zip file takes over a minute.  If you try to extract the zip file from the share to anywhere on the device it runs for about 5 minutes and errors out saying that they drive may be full.  I have checked all of the network settings (of which there aren't very many) and am stuck.  I have upgraded the firmware to 1.20.1.  Replaced network cables, tried different ports, and adjusted the MTU.
The only network service we use on the box is CIFS.
I connect to the device with an XP Pro machine.
    Any thoughts?

    Tom,
Just a few questions, how long has the NSS been in production? Was this working fine the all of a sudden becoming slow? Of course a 4Mb file should be instant. I have tested this is a lab and with no problems just now. What does your topology look like, what device models is in your network, like switch , router , etc. You said you tried to plug into different ports, question which ports and on what device? Did you plug into a different device like the router if NSS was plugged into a switch. Tried to give a little more details so we could have a better picture and idea? Also look into the NSS to make sure the hard drives are not having any errors (read/write errors). Also since you might be doing alot of configuration changes i would recommend backing up all data on NSS device if you haven't already done so.
    Thanks,
    Jason Bryant

  • BT HomeHub wifi network dropping connection with my apple products

I have a BT Home Hub connected to the internet and use it to provide my home wi-fi network.  To this I have connected iMac, Time capsule (by having it join existing network), airport express, apple Tv and cannon wireless printer)
Time machine backyps to timecapsule via wifi.  However None of my devices seem to remain connected to the wifi for very long.  If I open airport utility it states time capsule and airport express no longer connected to the network and only offer the option of forgetting device even though green light remains on time capsule and airport express.  If I go into Home Hub settings via ip address on safari, it is showing that both are connected.
With regard to my apple TV that doesn't seem to be able to share the content on my iMac because of home sharing connectivity issues.
Finally my iMac seems unable to connect to my wifi printer over the network even thoough all seem to be connected to homeHub appropriately.
Can anyone help out with this?

This setup is the worst possible.
You will always have issues with the TC .. it will be slow and unreliable because that is the nature of double hop wireless.
You MUST plug the TC into the HH by ethernet or using something like EOP adapters so the TC can work properly in bridge mode and create a wireless network.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
For help with your Time Machine problem, check the FAQ and Troubleshooting items at the top of the Time Machine section for OS X 10.6:

the Time Capsule started blinking yellow and airport utility came up saying there was a problem finding a wireless signal (i think).
Please describe your local network configuration, including brand(s) and model number(s) of all equipment, as well as how everything is connected. It sounds like your Time Capsule is configured to connect wirelessly to a network created by your cable company's router.

I've a few other things connected to the AE such as computers, ipad, itouch, etc, and have never had a problem connecting these once I've entered the mac address into the AE. Can anyone help me with this please?

have you made sure that the network setting in the system preferences is set up to use dhcp? if not i would try changing it so that it shows that it is getting its address by dhcp

  • Dual Band (5ghz and 2.4 ghz) Wireless Network Config and Dropped Connection

Hi, I have an Airport Extreme (802.11N) and a Motorola WR850G (802.11A/B/G) that I'm trying to connect in a dual band setup - but something in my setup is causing the Airport to drop it's connection (before the connection is dropped - everything works great). After I lose connectivity, both routers show up in my list of wireless networks, the light stays green, but I don't have local or internet access. When I try to reconnect, the log on times out. Also, the Airport isn't displayed in the Airport Utility (light is green on the airport itself though). Unplugging and resetting the Airport Allows all computers on the network to connect locally and to the internet for a few hours until the connection drops again. While it is up and running, I have no problems streaming movies off the connected Airdisk, navigating the internet, and connecting both N and G devices to the network.
I'd love to hear from you if you've gotten a similar setup to work, and if possible, have you provide the settings you used to make this work. I've looked around quite a bit and haven't seen a detailed description of the process (even from the Apple documentation). Also, advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated since my wireless networking knowledge is pretty basic.
    My configuration:
Time Warner cable modem connected to the Airport's WAN port. WR850G connected by LAN port to Airport's LAN port. Bridge Mode check box selected on WR850G. Airport setup for 802.11n (5Ghz). Unique SSIDs to determine which network is 'N'. Same password for both networks. My Firmware and utilities are up to date.
    Computers/Devices on Network:
Two Macs with Airport Extreme N cards. A Vista PC with a D-link N card (only compatible with 2.4 Ghz so it connects to the G network). A Vista PC with a GB ethernet card connected to the Airport Extreme. Various other G devices like iPod touches and an old iBook. Airdisk connected to the Airport Extreme.
    Thanks,

I removed the second router (Moto wr850g) and everything seems to be working smoothly. It must be some settings on that one that are causing the problem, but I haven't been able to get it configured correctly. I noticed there were some IP conflicts with my wireless wanting to use the old Moto router IP and trying to assign my Mac an IP from that router. Does anyone know specifically what needs to be disabled on a router in bridge mode? Since I have a third party router there aren't any handy wizards that can configure it for me.
    Thanks again

  • Getting most benefits of your LAN network

Thanks to take time to read this post.
I'm a *regular Mac user* who work on a small business and we using 8 mac vs 2 PC on our next work, recently i setup a mac (the holdes one in the place, a hold G4), as a "server". In fact, it is just a computer with standard *OS 10.5.X (not the server edition).* We use it *to share files* on a shared folder so avery body connect as guest and they drop files into the folder for other people. I also use it to create a *intranet site* where i can create HTML pages to display paste projets and internet links. I also create a *HTTPS file sharing* over the internet site (using CrushFTP) for transferring big files with clients, i use HTTPS becose i heard that is more secure than a FTP site. And finilly whe put lots of external hardrive on this mac and we *backup files* using Time Machine for people with Macbook, so they can backup wirelesly without aving to connect any hard drive to there Macbook.
So, *avery thing work fine but...* (becose there a but) I would like to get a little more of this setup.
1- I would like to be able to *connect to the LAN network over the internet* so any body at home can connect to there Mac at office. For the momment, with the HTTPS site we can only connect to the server. How can i setup de "Server" or the rooter to be able to connect to any mac in the network.
2- All the mac in the network use manuel IP adresse, i meen that the DHCP is close in the netwook. I did that becose it whase easier to create applescript apps to automate things, but *is that secure to have stable adresse* for all the mac if the LAN is accessible on the internet.
3- *What about security* wath do i have to do to make those new setup secure, so nobody get abuse by hakers or any other abusewares?
4- For the moment, the intranet web site is a standard first generation HTTP site without any interraction possible. If someone wan to add info there, he have to transfert my the stuf and i edit the html files with dreamweaver. I would like to give the possibility to all the workers to *edit html like the next generation of web site*, where i have to look for that, do i nead OS X Server? Is there a software to create site like this, like CrushFTP do, for the FTP site? I try to read on that but it's vary confusing. For exemple there a page on the intranet that show internet links for web site in relation to a projet, i would like to put a button so if you want to add a next like you just press in and copy the web adress and press ok to redefind the web page.
5- That's about it for the moment, i would like the create with this post a : *How to get most of your Mac office network for Dummies*, for people that like mac put dont studing in cumputer networking or things like that.
Hope to have lost of posts, and i hope to help other with that

You need to setup routes between ports on the external IP address and addresses/ports on the internal LAN. I haven't done this in about 8 years so I can't tell you how. I would just recommend you get a tool like IPNetRouter to do it for you. Just setup a unique external port/internal address/port for each machine. If your server is directly connected, you can do it there. If you have some sort of router, add your routes on that device.
Also, you haven't specified how you want to connect to the internal machines. You will have to decide that. You can route anything you want, but you need to know and plan for it.

That is fine. It will make establishing external connections easier.

You have Macs, so that is a good start. Just be sure to limit any routes that are visible to the outside world. Hackers will be able to get it and you will have to stop them on the client side.
Or, if you have more money and/or time, you could setup a VPN.

That is pretty open-ended. There are lots of ways you could do this: Content Management systems, configuration management systems (CVS), or dozens of other tools.

  • Mac Mini Wake for Network Access Not working after upgrade

After upgrading to the latest OS (10.8) the WOL fuction is not work.  This used to work before the release.  i could see the Mac mini on my mac book pro even when it was asleep.  Once I click on it under the shared resources area I could see the Mac wake up.  Now as soon as it goes to sleep it drops from my mac book pro.  I am connected via WIFI but also tried via LAN.  Same result. Any ideas?  Seems to be a bug as I google this issue it appears to be impacting many people.

Same issue here after updating my iMac to OS X 10.8. I can't use Logmein, wireless syncing to iTunes from my iOS devices, or my Logitech Server software for my Logitech Radio. Once the computer goes to sleep, it is invisible to the rest of the network. This all worked fine on 10.4-10.7. I have double-checked that Wake on Network Activity is turned on. I have disabled all networking interfaces except Ethernet. Nothing seems to help.

  • Network/Internet Connection Drops

I've been having this for a long while (>6 months) but it hasn't bugged me too much until now.
Symptoms: Network/internet connection just goes away.
When: After about 5-30 minutes that the computer is on (maybe longer sometimes).
Activity: Anything to nothing. Sometimes it's been idle for hours and it just doesn't connect.
Recovery: Reboot works every time. Any amount of fiddling with the network connections fails. Looking at the system preferences shows the connection is still valid. If I change locations, nothing happens. If I try to ping my router, time-out.
I'm thinking it has to be related to an update some time ago as I don't have much 3rd party stuff in the mix. Running straight LAN connection to Linksys using static IP.
Yes I know the Linksys and my cable modem are fine as the other 3 computers that I have experience no interruptions.
This is starting to get very annoying.

    Ok - long-shot here...
I recently started having problems with my macbook pro dropping internet (connected via Airport to TC). My iMac (also connected via airport to TC) had no issues.
I run 2 wifi networks using TC, a 'full-up' network and a guest (internet only) network. So I tried switching to the internet only network - hey presto! no probs...
So what is different between the 2 networks - well, I had started messing about with Back to Mac and remote login/file sharing between the laptop and imac. Although I had given up trying to make it all work, it was clearly trying to establish connectivity in the background, thus presumably interfering with the connection for internet that I was using actively on the laptop.
After turning all file/screen sharing and back to mac off the problem was resolved. Luckily I am still able to access my TC as network storage between both my imac and laptop and I have moved back to my 'full up' wifi network......touch wood, problem resolved.

    Thanks, W

I'm not sure if you understand that 5 GHz has some upsides, but also some very significant downsides.
The upside is that the 5 GHz signal will allow faster speeds.
The downside is that you must always give up something in order to gain something else.Unfortunately, the marketing hype about 5 GHz does not go into very many details about this.
In the case of 5 GHz, the 5 GHz signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals, so they do not travel as far or penetrate any obstructions like walls or ceilings nearly as well as 2.4 GHz signals. In many cases, in order to get good 5 Ghz performance, you literally have to have almost a line-of-sight relationship between your computer and the wireless router.
If you have a new dual band router, which broadcasts both a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signal simutaneously, your Mac will connect to the best signal quality automatically depending on its location in relation to the router. In the same room, without any obstructions, it will connec to 5 GHz. But, take the laptop down the hall a few rooms and around the corner and the Mac will connect to the 2.4 GHz signal because at that location, the 2.4 GHz signal is not only stronger, it is also faster.
