4-pin FW card for G5

I've been looking (and searching previous posts) for answers but haven't had much luck.
I want to add a 4-pin firewire port to several Powermac G5s. Some are dual processor (PCI) and some are quad processor (PCI express). I want to add the port so that I can plug in firewire decks to the computers without using the 6 pin port. The problem with using the 6-pin port is that since the 6 pin port carries power along with the data, there is a risk of blowing the firewire port on the DV deck. I want to avoid this risk altogether by installing a 4-pin connector.
I've found some 4-pin firewire cards that look like they might work but wanted to know if anyone had actually installed and used one that worked (either for PCI or PCI express). Any help would be awesome!

You could use a 6-pin to 4-pin adapter in a 6-pin FireWire port.

  • Best 68 Pin SCSI Card for Mac OS 9 on 933 mHz Quicksilver G4?

    Hello,
I'm looking for a SCSI card that will support 68 pin SCSI drives (15K Cheetahs) on a Mac G4 Quicksilver running Mac OS 9 ONLY (Not Classic. I only installed OS 9 from the retail disc and am NOT using Mac OS X). I have Adaptec 2940UW and Adaptec 2940U2W cards which work on my Blue and White G3 with SCSI drives. However those Adaptec cards do not work on the G4....at least you can't boot from a SCSI drive on them.
I would like a card that may also work in OS X in case I change the purpose of the machine later as I have those original install discs. I have read of some folks using the ATTO UL4D with success in OS X, but wanted to know if anyone knows if it will work in OS 9.2.1 only or Classic. I called ATTO Tech and they weren't sure, and some old web pages I have read only mention OS X. Hence, I'm unsure if it's compatible with OS9. I would appreciate any feedback from SCSI users. Also, if there are other cards that you think would work with my setup, please advise.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

  • Recommended sound card for Oracle Redhat Linux 64 bit?

    Dear Experts,
I'm trying to install the latest Oracle Redhat 5.
64 bit. On a certified Asus motherboard.
It will be a dual boot windows/Linux machine.
And I'm having an awful time with the sound card for my new server.
(It will be used for learning, at home. It's important to
have sound for some instructional videos that I will also watch.)
Other installs, sound has installed and worked fine.
I believe it's partially because the sound came directly off
    the motherboard in those cases.
But with this new server, it came with a sound card, no onboard.
The sound card works with windows. But not with Linux.
I've been swapping three sound cards in and out, trying to get
one to work. Each has some partial success, but none meet all
    of the requirements (below).
What is really frustrating is that I want the sound to go
to the green headphone jack on the front of the computer case.
To do this, there is a cable that connects the sound card, to
    the front of the chassis.
The existing sound card that I have, has a connector for this.
It is an "HD audio", or an AC 97 connector. There two rows of
five pins, with one pin blocked up, so that the connector is
inserted in the correct manner. The cord is hard wired to the case.
You can see some images of the pins and the cords here:

You would figure that whether the connector existed or not would be a standard
feature that would be listed for sound cards. But it's rare to find it listed anywhere.
When I went to the computer store, I had to open all the boxes to see if it
was there or not!!!! Manufacturers, this is not that difficult!!
At this point, after a couple of days of struggle, I just want to buy a
simple sound card that works right out of the box.
    Here are the requirements:
    - gets instantly recognized by Linux (Oracle Redhat 5) 64 bit, and plays sound
with the standard Linux drivers. I believe I have all of the drivers installed,
because a few cards do play with them automatically. During installation, I
    installed Every package available.
    - no installation of special Linux drivers required.
    - the other big requirment is that the card have output to an HD Audio,
or AC 97 connector, and will play music through the headphone jack.
(Believe it or not, I have one card that works fine out the back,
but won't work through the HD Audio. But it works fine in Windows)
    - will also work with Windows 64 bit.
Does anyone have any good sound card recommendations that will meet all these requirements?
    Thanks a lot!

Almost a year later... what have you been listening too? :-)
I have to admit that I'm not an expert for "sound" under Linux. I think you may find http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page interesting. It also shows which sound cards are compatible.
ALSA is pretty much standard under Linux and stands for Advanced Linux Sound Architecture. Together with pulse-audio it provides audio and MIDI functionality to the Linux operating system and is, by default, also included in RHEL and other descendants. You can install pulseaudio support using the EPEL repository following the instructions at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL
    wget rpm -Uvh http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/5/x86_64/epel-release-5-4.noarch.rpm
    sudo rpm -Uvh epel-release-5-4.noarch.rpm
    yum list alsa* pulseaudio*
    Loaded plugins: downloadonly, rhnplugin, security
This system is not registered with ULN.
    ULN support will be disabled.

  • RAM cards for Intel iMac 2.8Ghz versus 2.8Ghz Extreme

    Hi everyone,
I've just bought 4GB of RAM from Crucial to upgrade my year old iMac. Once I had placed my order I noticed that they recommended different cards for the machines with Intel 2.8GHz and 2.8GHz Extreme chips. I don't know what the difference in the memory is but they must have been different somehow as one was about $20 more expensive.
Anyway, I bought the ones for the 2.8GHz Extreme as thats what I thought I had (that's what I paid for anyway!) but I've just checked in System Profiler and there is no mention of my processor being 'Extreme' or in fact anything other than an Intel Core 2 Duo with a speed of 2.8GHz.
    So my questions are:
    a) Have I been ripped off by Apple and my machine isn't 'Extreme' at all - how can I tell?
    b) Will the RAM I bought work on my machine whatever one it is? The RAM is certainly the correct type, i.e. number of pins etc.
Thanks for anyone that can help. If you have one of the 2.8GHz Extreme machines from last August, could you have a look in your system profiler and see if it mentions it being extreme?
    Thanks again,
    Neil

This is very easy, if you purchased your machine prior to April 2008 it is either the 2.4 or 2.8 machine. To find out for sure which one, go to the System Profiler and look under hardware you will see something very similar to this:
    *Hardware Overview:*
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 4 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM71.007A.B03
    SMC Version: 1.21f4
    Serial Number: XXXXXXXX
This is from my machine I ommitted the serial number. An even more simple way to find out is to look at the box it was shipped in, I'm assuming it is NOT a refurb model as they ship in plain brown boxes.
If you purchased your machine after April 2008 it is a little more difficult but still pretty easy. Your System Profiler will be very similar but the Bus Speed will be 1066 MHz.
The memory specification for all the mid 2007 Aluminum iMacs is the same. Use:
667 MHz, PC2-5300, DDR2 compliant (also referred to as DDR2 667) popular brands are Crucial, Kingston, OWC, etc.
If it is a early 2008 (Bus Speed 1066MHz MHz) then you will need the PC2-6400 memory chips, again all the early 2008 Aluminium iMacs use the same memory chips.

    Hello all.
I recently bought online a 200$ Apple Gift Card for buying apps for the iPAD.
I can't seem to be able to do that. My gift card has a number and a pin. Does this mean I can only use it phisically to buy in the store?
I just want to buy apps.
    Thanks!

  • Graphics card for HP Compaq dc7800

I am looking to buy a graphics card for my HP Compaq dc7800 Small Form Factor PC, I would like to have cheap cards. What would you recommend.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi:
You are rather limited with the 240W power supply.
I would get a used low profile ATI Radeon 2400 HD 256 MB PCIe card on eBay.
This Dell card I posted should work just fine.
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-ATI-Radeon-HD-2400PRO-320-5891-/280798788349?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash...
If you want a new low profile card with HDMI out you can check the link below for the Radeon HD 6450. But make sure the card you get comes with the low profile bracket, and read the reviews on some of these cards where they say the VGA pins hamper closing the case.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100006662&IsNodeId=1&Description=HD%2064...
If you get a card with HDMI out, it will disable your onboard video, so restart the PC after you load the drivers for the card, go into the BIOS and in the device configuration menu, change the onboard audio setting from disabled to enabled. Save the setting there and again when you exit. Then you will get your onboard audio back and also have HDMI audio if you need it.

There is another option if you still know your ID's password.  Call Apple directly and ask for the Account Security department.  They will need to verify that you are the account holder, but they should be able to force a reset for your security questions if they do so.
For security questions they are required to get a support pin for the account from you.  You can get one by going to appleid.apple.com (no www in front) and signing in using the Manage Apple ID button.  The support pin is in the bottom-left corner of the password and security section, but don't generate it until they ask you to.
You will still need to verify one other piece of information with you once this is done.  At this time, there is no other way to reset the security questions without having added a rescue email before losing them.  An Apple Retail Store would actually need to call in for you too, so don't worry about not having one.
    Good luck!

  • Asus IPIBL-LB expansion card for usb3.0?

I am trying to upgrade my aging HP a6152n PC once again. I would like to increase USB throughput by upgrading to USB3.0.
I have windows 7 64 pro installed3 hard drives and have recently purchassed a external WD 4 TB mkybook to use as a backup. It works on the USB 2.0 port but it has the capability to run on USB 3.0. I would like to take advantage of the much higher throughput of the USB 3.0 if I can find a card  and driver that will work on my system.I tried a 4 port expansion card from Inateck but could not get it to work.   Windows device manager indicated Code 10 " This Device cannot Start"
Any Suggestiions or advice.   Thanks  wyuhasse

    Wyuhasse, welcome to the forum.
Here is a card that says it is compatible with Win 7 32/64-bit.  There is a "Built-in 4-pin power connector for receiving extra power supply from system".  You should be certain to connect it.  Read the Customer Reviews to see what users have to say about it.
I suggest checking your Inateck card to see if it has the extra power connector.  If it does and it is not connected, this could be the reason for it not working properly.

I recommend you install nothing older than the Apple-firware 5770, about US$250.
RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
    1) Apple brand cards,
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
    3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
    1) Apple brand cards:
    • Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
    • Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
    • NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
    • NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
    3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
    • SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
    • EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
    • running 10.8.3 or later AND
    • don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
    • can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

  • Recommend compatible PSU and graphics card for P35D3?

Recommend compatible PSU and graphics card for P35D3?
This weekend I’ll be taking my rig to a PC repair shop and ask them to swap out my PSU and my graphics card.
Because I’ve RMA’d all the components (see signature) several members of different forums, and the tech support of the various components, seem to think that my boot problem is because of a compatibility issue with either my Ultra X3 600W PSU or my XFX 8600 GT and my P35D3.
I need to be ready to make decision, without having time to research, if the repair tech recommends a replacement.
    Here’s my considerations:
I selected the Ultra because it's both modular and 85% efficient (it also has the required 8-pin cable to power the P35D3's CPU and it has SATA power cables.
I selected the XFX 8600 GT card because it is dual-link (2 DVI outs -- Dell 30” & Viewsonic 19”) and it has no fan, and is DX10 ready. I’m not attached to the idea of no fan. I’m a speed freak but not a gamer or an over clocker--I like the option of trying out games.
Both the Ultra and the XFX are somewhat medium priced.
If the repair tech discovers that other PSUs or graphic cards work then I might be able to get Ultra or XFX to accept a return. Neither company accepted my offer to pay extra to exchange mine for another better model.
    Suggestions please.
    Thank you,
    Kerry

  • How can I copy mp3 files from my Itunes library to an SD card for use in a non-apple phone?

How can I copy mp3 files from my Itunes library to an SD card for use in a non-apple phone?  I can physically copy the tunes as mp3's but the phone does not seem to be able to play all of them.   Do I need to copy an entire album or can I just pick & choose individual songs?   The phone is question is an LG running who knows what for an operating system.

AAC is Advanced Audio Coding.  Basically it's a format that sounds better than MP3 but doesn't take up as much space as a lossless format (like you'd have on a CD).  More than likely you've had that encoding turned on when you ripped your music into itunes (it's the default encoder).  Therefore your LG phone won't play them.
You need to turn off the AAC format by going to the iTunes menu, Preferences, General (at the top), then clicking the "Import Preferences" button.  Change the AAC Encoder to MP3 Encoder.  After that you'll have to make MP3 copies of your songs by right clicking them and selecting "Create MP3 Version."  You'll get a copy of the song that should transfer to your SD card and have MP3 encoding.  Hopefully your phone will play that.

  • One card for OSX and one for windows...

OK, I've been following the ongoing debate regarding the choice of graphics cards for the Mac Pro. I think saying that it's limited would be putting it mildly.
Now, I really wish for a few more horsepower for when I'm playing Warcraft in Bootcamp but I really don't want to fork out £270 for the 1900XT just for apple to come along and update the range in x months and as I only really need the extra oomph in windows I wouldnt really see any benefit in OSX from the new card. Some people have touched on the idea of perhaps using a seperate card for when using windows. This would be great as I can get a better card for use in windows for a fraction of the price of a new apple card. What are the pro's and con's of doing this? Would the non-apple card confuse OSX and vica-versa would windows see both cards? Would I need to specify in windows which card I want to use? Would I have to remove a card each time I booted in the 'other' OS?
Educate me a little please :O)

I left WoW with over 200 days played and moved from a G4 to a Mac Pro with a 1900 during that time. I also ended up having my x1900 card replaced by Apple. According to many sources there is now a Rev2 card being shipped. I can't confirm it but I can confirm that fewer people seem to be having problems, and if you use SMC FanControl while playing WoW it will keep things cool and you'll be assured of no over heating issues. Personally I would not be concerned if I used SMC Fan Control, and in fact after getting the new card and beginning to use SMC Fan Control I had no further issues of any kind. The issue was with overheating. WoW runs just fine in OSX using the x1900 card. FPS over 100 is not uncommon and even in the Suppression room in BWL (still the most intense graphic area I can recall...nothing like it in Kara or anywhere else I've seen in the new content) I'd get 40-80fps. It's no SLI super high end, but very, very playable with a Mac Pro.
