4 speaker surround sound

Is there a 3rd party app or something for taking the microphone in on the MacBook Pro and converting it to an audio out for 4 speaker surround sound?
My windows machine (ya, I know...I am a mac convert but I haven't gotten to the part where I buy my first Mac...yet) I have a pretty cool audio card that supports up to 5.1 surround sound by using the audio out, microphone in, and line in for the 6 channels of audio out for the 5.1 surround sound capabilities, and the driver for the card lets me choose between 2 speakers, 4 speakers, or 6 speaker out channels. And I was wondering if I could use the microphone in on the MacBook Pro as a 3rd and 4th channel out without buyinga firewire audio card or buying optical in speakers.
Hope someone knows.

actually, mine has been the only one that I have ever seen that does that. but I can't remember the model of the card.
my setup for speakers is one set of normal 2 speaker computer speakers that have a subwoofer built in but not on a separate channel, I also have a stereo system in my room that is in the right place for the back speakers of the surround sound setup with I use the aux in for them. When I plug the normal computer speakers into the line out on my audio card and the stereo system into the microphone in on the card I can go into the driver that comes with the card and set it up for 4 speaker surround sound, which then I can play games like halo or watch DVDs with surround sound in surround sound.

  • LG Blu-Ray Surround Sound Receiver

Hi there, almost 2 years ago I bought an LG Blu-Ray player with the 5 speaker surround sound.  At the time, I lived in an apartment and could position the speakers properly.  However, recently I purchased a house (Yah!), but there isn't a way to run cables from where the TV sits to the rear corners for the rear speakers. I was wondering if there is an adapter to make at least the 2 speakers wireless that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg?
    If not, any other suggestions?
    Thanks everyone!

    Hello Geekgyrl!
Thanks for posting and congratulations on unlocking the Home Owner achievement! I've ran into the situation that you are describing numerous times when working as a Home Theater Installer for Geek Squad.
The first thing I'd need to know is what type of surround system you have. Are you set up with a dedicated receiver and multiple speakers? Or is the blu-ray player the center of the speaker setup?
We do carry a Rocketfish Wireless Kit that should work for you if you have a standalone receiver, and I can personally recommend it after installing quite a few of them myself. It is pretty affordable and a lot easier than going into the attic or crawl space with the random mystery insects.
If the blu-ray player is the center, or you have a home theater in a box, you might want to consider calling our Mission Control dispatch (1-800-GEEKSQUAD) center or visiting your local Best Buy to schedule a Home Entertainment Advisor to visit your home and recommend additional solutions.
I hope this gets you started on your path to an awesome movie night, and let me know if there is anything else I can answer for you!

  • Surround sound problem

    surround sound problemF hi,
i have a creative t7900 8 speaker surround sound setup. back in august i purchased a x-fi soundblaster extremem audio sound card.
up until yesterday it was working fine. i opened my pc up after disconecting all the cables and gave a it clean with compressed air. upon setting it all up again im not gettin surround sound anymore.
no sound is comin out of the fornt centre speaker or the two rear ones. bizzarely when i run a speaker test and test both the side speakers, no sound happens. the strange thing is when i test the two rear speakers the sound comes outa the side speakers. i've swapped the rear and side speakers in my subwoofer and the speakers are defo working.
i even reverted back to my gigabyte motherboard to see if the problem was with the sound card but the same problem exists. i have updated all sound drivers. i've checked both manuals for the MB and sound card and im positi've the cables are plugged in correctly.
has anyone had a similar problem? this is seriously doin my head in.
    help

oddly enough I had the same issue a while ago, and someone at my house switched the audio language to spanish preferred and cnn didn't come out but every other station did.
it may or may not be the same situation but give it a try
menu > settings > audio > audio language.    english preferred   put a check mark there by highlighting it and hitting ok

  • 5.1 Surround sound from iMac.

Hi, I am wanting to change from a desktop PC (with Soundblaster card and Altec lansing 6 speaker surround sound (audio out from PC are FrontL-R, RearL-R, Centre/Subwoofer) to an iMac. Presumably I would use the firewire output (?) into some sort of adapter to create the audio signals descrbed earlier to feed into the Altec Lansing system.
I have seen old postings on  the internet referring to a Griffin Firewave device but this no longer weems to be available.
Can anyone suggest how I might be able to do this. To buy a whole new home cinema system seems an expensive solution as the PC is only used in the home study.

You really need to specify exactly what imac you have.  Current ones I believe have an optical (out) and in and I think that can be combined with usb to produce multi-channel sound.  But it's just an academic exercise if you don't have the optical.
Also, google "5.1 audio on imac" for lots of hits on this topic.

  • Creative speaker settup test problem.... surround sound test prob

OK this seems to be a hard concept for the support staff at creative to grasp so hopefully someone out there can help me..... OK? I have a Audigy 2 XZ platinum sound card with?the creative?7. speakers. it has worked fine in the past. recently when I go into the speaker setup and do a test to see if all the speakers are working correctly.... front left...front center...front right.... now this is when things get stupid.... rather than it continuing to the side right speaker..... the side right "sound" comes out of the front right speaker.... and it does the same for the rear right.... then to the rear left but this time it comes out of the front left speaker?and the same thing for the side left. I did a reinstall of windows and did a speaker test.... I was happy to see that it was fixed all the correct sounds were being heard from the correct speakers. I thought this was over with until I just ran a test again and it is back. It seems that all surround sound features don't work, none of my games nothing. if anyone knows how to fix this that would be awesome.... it is really pissing me off.
    things I have tried....
I have tried completely removing all drivers software and my sound card hardware and reinstalling everything..... does not work. I have tried to install new drivers..... no good. I want to say that after I installed the new updated drivers is when it started acting dumb. Anyways thanks for the help in advanced.

well I have been trying to figure this out... I am pretty sure its something to do with the drivers.... when I go in DXDIAG and run the sound tests it is saying that my Audigy 2 zs does not support hardware buffering? it seems that it is using the generic sound driver rather then the correct creative driver... I jsut dont know how to fix it.

This idea should be quite feasable if you have a good utility for configuring speakers. i know the audigy 2 series has this. the relati've volumes of each set will need to be balanced.

  • Having trouble using my 5.1 surround sound speaker system and can't configure itunes to use it

With my Logitech Surround Sound Speakers Z506 I am listening to music with itunes and i have 5 speakers total with a subwoofer, the configuration is two front, one center, two rear, and a subwoofer. The front , center and subwoofer are fine but the rear pair speakers do not have any playback with them. I am wondering if you don't mind helping me troubleshoot this problem.
Thank you have a nice day
    Cole

Well I'm not using Vista I'm using XP SP2 and I have the same problem.
On the windows sound control panel there is a button called speaker volume. when you click on it you get a bunch of sliders with channels -8. Ive discovered that if I move the master sound control in any of the Creative Sound modes software Entertainment/Audio Creation or Gaming the channel sliders in the windows control panel numbered 3-7 all go to zero which stops the surround sound working. It leaves channels and 2 and 8 alone which can be changed with the sound control in the creative software.
Even checking move all the slides together option on the windows control panel is cancelled as soon as I twitch the main sound control. It's driving me nuts. I keep thinking I must be missing something really obvious here but alas I can't think what.
Ive tried lots of different solutions to no avail. Interestingly when I tried to use the autodriver update thing on the creative web site it said that i am using Vista and you'll have to download manually. Which I did and still didnt resolve my problem.
Sorry no solutions just more problems lets hope someone can help!
Edit - Just discovered - I have XFi Pro if I use the I/O Console volume dial it works fine, but if I use the software volume control it all goes wrong. Think I posted in the wrong thread as well as this is vista but it just seemed so relevant.

  • X-Fi surround sound speaker assignment issue in VI

OK, here's my system:Intel Core 2 duo X6800, BFG 680i mobo, 2gb Corsair PC936, 8800GTX SLI, Soundblaster X-Fi Fatality FPS, Vista Ultimate, Logitech Z5500 So, due to the new vid cards, I decided to upgrade to Vista Ultimate for DX0 capability. Creative sent me the Vista installation disk and I installed. Here's the problem: The speaker assignments are all screwed up: The front left sound is coming out of the center channel, the center channel is coming our of the front left speaker, the front right is coming out of the subwoofer and the subwoofer is coming out of the front right. Oddly, the rears seem just fine. I ran the Logitech sound test on the z5500's and sound generates properly per that test. So, now that my PC sound is all screwed up, what the hell is the problem This sound card worked fine last week, when it was running in XP. Any ideas Any advice Please help!!

  • 5.1 Surround Sound only outputting from one speaker on macbook

I have connected my old LG LH T360SE home cinema system to my white 13" macbook (late 2007) from the headphone jack via an audio Y cable into the RCA audio input on the back of the home cinema system. Unfortunately when playing movies via Plex, VLC or any other media player the sound only outputs through the front left speaker and sub-woofer. I checked that the other speakers are connected by perfoming a connection test in the product's setup and there is some background noise if you put your ear up against them. The 5 speakers work fine when playing a DVD on the integrated DVD player. Is there any settings on the macbook I need to change to make use of the full 5.1 surround sound?
    Thanks

You'll need to use an optical cable to get 5.1 surround. So you'll also need a little optical->mini-optical converter (which allows you to plug it into the 3.5mm jack).

  • SoundBlaster 5.1 no surround sound with the speaker test, but with movies

ISoundBlaster 5. no surround sound with the speaker test, but with moviesO Hello I have a new SoundBlaster XFi Surround 5. USB.
I installed the drivers on Vista 32.
I connected the Soundblaster with an optical cable with my home cinema system.
I checked the 5. speakers option in the Creative Console Starter.
When I will test the surround function by clicking the speakers in the surround test diagramm from the Console.
The front speakers are sending an testsignal, but the rear speakers and the center are silent.
I thought that are settings in the soundcontrol from vista but when I play an Movie with 5. sound, the rear speakers function.
Is ist the optical mode that only support the movie dts signal? Why the Console test from creative doesn't function?
I have further applications but they don't work. Only movies.
    Thx

    Hi,
S/PDIF?format can only transmit 2 channels of uncompressed audio, which is why you only hear the front channels. For movie dts, an encoded compressed stereo data is transmitted through the S/PDIF optical link to your home cinema system which then decode it into 5. audio.

  • Using 5.1 surround sound speaker set with my laptop

    1. HP Pavilion DV6-6150EW QA944EA
    2. Windows 7 Profesional 64 bit
    This is my laptop.
I want to buy a set of 5.1 surround sounds speakers (most likely some cheap and popular creative inspire Inspire T6160).
My question is will they work with my laptop? Ill have to just plug cable from that speaker set into my 3.5mm jack socket on the left side of laptop (where i usually plug in headphones) and it will work?
Or this laptop dont have 5.1 sound?
I didnt found what sound card it has, all i found is that its beats audio and IDT High Definition audio codec (driver date: 2012-03-23, driver version 6.10.6395.0).
I would appreciate help sice i dont want to find out that if i buy speakers they wont work (or only 2 speakers will work).

    Hey there,
I would recommend using one of these USB audio processors: http://goo.gl/5z9Gm
This is just the first one I found so do you research to see which one fits your needs the best. I looked at your laptops spec's and could not tell if you had any digital output connectors. HDMI will also transfer digital audio, it just depends on what your trying to accomplish.
    Hope this helps!

  • Using creative surround sound speaker package with Mac - any chance?

hi - I have Creative THX 7.1 surround sound speakers. They work well with my PC and its creative soundcard. Will they work at all with an Imac? I have a sinking feeling they won't?
    Electric Ray

What sort of inputs does this system have (e.g. digital optical, RCA, miniplug)? If any other than digital optical, you may need a decoder or other external sound card to use these speakers with your iMac.

  • Is it even possible to edit surround sound on a Mac Pro?!?!?!

    Hello,
I've just been reading this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2924869?
Which among many things discusses the fact that Mac Pros, even through an optical cable, are not capable of exporting live 5.1 audio - they can only playback already encoded 5.1 dolby audio from DVD's for example. Apparently the optical out is a purely stereo affair otherwise. I've finally received my Logitech 5450 speakers (took weeks and weeks) and hooked them up. They can indeed playback 5.1 from a DVD, which is splendid. However, one of the things I was most looking forward to was working on surround mixes in Soundtrack Pro. However, firstly STP doesn't want to convert stereo files into surround (like the video online showed), but only means that the surround panner pans between the two front speakers. (I know there's another thread about that, but the proposed solution of adjusting the collapse slider does nothing).
Secondly, and perhaps more confusingly, if I load an actual 5.1 file from the STP content, it still doesn't play in proper surround - the centre speaker kind of works and I think something's rumbling through the subwoofer, but both of the left speakers and right speakers are 'compressed' into the front one alone - nothing comes out of the rear speakers (they are perfectly connected I assure you!). In other words, f I move the puck in the surround panner so it's solely on the front right, and then over to the rear right, it's exactly the same (coming out the front).
I'm sure there must be a solution. Why would Apple advertise the ease with which one can now mix surround if the Mac Pro (I'm not exactly talking about a mac mini here) cannot export live 5.1?
Something which I'm sure is related, but which I can't solve, is that if I go into Audio MIDI setup in Utilities, and try and 'Configure Speakers', only two channels are recognised, and it won't let me select any of the multichannel options (such as 5.1, which is greyed out.)
Anyone know what I'm going on about? I'm totally lost - not really an audio person in general, but hoping to enrich my short films with some surround magic.
    Any help greatly appreciated!
    Steve
Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Typically 5.1 is mixed, and monitored on a 5.1 monitoring system, which means you need an audio interface and setup capable of outputting six channels of audio.
So of course the Mac Pro is capable, but not without additional multi-channel playback and monitoring hardware.
Encoded surround sound, which you hear on playback from things like a DVD, is entirely different story and the encoding is done at the end of the mixing/mastering process. Sometimes you will encode a mix in a variety of formats, Dolby Pro Logic, DTS etc.

  • Guide : Getting 5.1 surround sound. Audigy 2

    Hi all
I thought I would write up a really quick but effecti've and simple guide for owners of the Audigy2 ZS and seeing how its Xmas time, I can assume a few lucky boys and girls may have this awesome card under the tree.
Most of whats covered should work with all creative products.
(Sorry, but I WILL NOT cover any info regarding encoding media or the like that will conflict with copyright laws)
This guide is for setting up your Creative Audigy 2 ZS for surround sound 5. reproduction and information in regards to required Filters/Codecs. I have not included any advanced set up options or the like as the ZS with the set ups I have incluced here will cover it out of the box.
One of the most common issues people may have with 5. not fuctioning correctly while playing a DVD movie ( Mpeg ) or any multi channel media that is 5. encoded, has to do with Codecs/Filters.
Most media players will not decode all AC3filters/Mpeg, thus require extra filters/codecs/plugins to be installed.
Ok , the first thing to do is ensure your sound card and speakers are set up correctly.
Most common speaker sets have 3 plugs that go in the back of your card .
EG, Logitech X-530. Pink = Front Centre.Black = Rear left and right. Green = Front left and right.
Ensure they are in the correct place and are tightly fitted.Ensure your sound card is secure and tightly in place.Make sure your speaker cables are tidy and not a big tangled mess.
Ensure in device audio controls that SPDIF passthrough is NOT ticked as this is for optical output ( the ZS pro with rack fuction )
Update to the latest drivers an media source ap
    ps.
A few little things to set up first in Creative Mixer Control Panel to ensure cleaner sound:
Lower Master and Wav volume in Creative mixer to about 90% as to avoid any over dri've disstortion.Lower Master Bass Volume to about 90% to avoid over powering the bass.Ensure that your speaker settings Windows control panel and Creative speaker settings match your speaker set up..
Also run the THX Speaker Callibration test in basic mode.
YOU SHOULD DISSABLE CMSS IN EAX CP IN ORDER TO GET 5. TO FUCTION AS IT SHOULD.
CMSS is to be use only for a MONO or STEREO source/signal. It is for sending the stereo/mono signal ( left and right) to all speakers. This is not 5., mearly it is the same signal sent to all speakers to give you a more rich and vivid sound reproduction of an other wise flat source.
    Turn off any EAX FX.
Things you want to do to ensure stable use:
    SHUT DOWN CTHELPER:
A background task that is a plug-in manager for Creative drivers. A 3rd party manufacturer can use the CTHELPER plug-in interface to produce drivers, add-on features, and fixes that will integrate with a tighter fit with Creative?s sound drivers and utilities. Gi'ven its purpose CTHELPER would normally be classified as a "leave alone" background task. It also allows Creative speaker setup to be synchronized with Windows Control Panel speaker setting. Without it running that check box in Creative speaker setting is not functional (settings are not in sync). Unfortunately there are often problems with CTHELPER, most notably that it can use 00% of CPU time so it's best left disabled unless you REALLY need it .
Type in run "msconfig" and shut down all Creative Start up entries. Infact its proberly best to shut everything down.
NOTE: Any essentinal Software for the proper fuction of devices ,Eg: Razer mouse utils should be left on.
Simple Bios settings to help improve audio and stablity:
Dissable Pallette Snoop.ANY AND ALL shadows for devices, EG VGA BIOS and system bios should be dissabled. If you have the setting for PCI latency in your bios ( AGP boards only ) set it to 64, if its already at 64 try 32 .
Shut down ( remove, reconmended ) any 3rd party tweak apps that run in the background.
EG, Cache Man and any monitoring software.
Ok, now for Filters/Codecs and Plugins.
    A major required Filter is AC3. (ac3filter__0a_rc5)
AC3Filter - it is DirectShow filter for AC3 decoding to play AVI with AC3 audio tracks and MPEG2 (DVD). Required for WMP.
NOTE: If you have DVD software that should play encoded 5. then make sure you have any updates/patches for the player installed and go through the tools/options for the player and ensure its setup correctly to decode AC3filters in the applictions tools menu.
If you use Cyberlink Power DVD you may need to pay an extra fee to get the required AC3filter/MPEG2 decoders to fuction as all 5. sound settings may be greyed out on some dated versions.
InterVideo WIN DVD ( this software suit comes with most "Asus" if not all makes of Mainboards. This suit comes complete with the required codecs/filters so get full surrport for 5. - 6. - 7. out of the box. Note: you must set it up first under audio options as it defualts to 2..
If you use WMP0 you should download and install the AC3filter or get the latest XP codec/filters packs. With out these filters you may not get 5. sound and/or poor reproduction.
    Supported file types:
The following table lists the file types (formats) supported by Windows Media Player .(For files type played by Power DVD or WIN DVD please refer to the makers website or read me file for a detailed list).
File type (format) File name extension .
Music CD Playback (CD audio) .cda Audio Interchange File Format (AIFF) .aif, .aifc, and .aiff Windows Media audio and video files .asf, .asx, .wax, .wm, .wma, .wmd, .wmp, .wmv, .wmx, .wpl, and .wvx Windows audio and video files .avi and .wav Windows Media Player skins .wmz Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) .mpeg, .mpg, .mv, .mp2, .mpa, .mpe, .mp2v*, and .mpv2 Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) .mid, .midi, and .rmi AU (UNIX) .au and .snd MP3 .mp3 and .m3u DVD video .vob Macromedia Flash .swf Microsoft Recorded TV Show .dvr-ms*
NOTE: WMP defualts to 2.. To enable 5. run WMP0. Click on tools then point to options. Navigate to DVD then open up the advanced window. In here is everything you need to set things up.
NOTE: If you mess things up simply return to defult settings and start over.
Some common errors you may encounter with WMP.
Error messages are identified by numerical IDs, such as C00D0BC2 and 800704CF. You can determine the ID of a specific error message by clicking the More Information or Web Help button on the error message when you encounter it. The resulting page will indicate the error ID.
    : Error's C00D6A and C00D9A while playing DVD's or MPEG-2 content.
This is directly related to either your current video card drivers or the MPEG-2/DVD decoder you have installed (EG: PowerDVD, Win DVD etc ). Reinstalling and/or uninstalling the MPEG-2/DVD decoder (PowerDVD, Win DVD ) and/or video drivers should fix the problem for you.
You should now be able to re-install you decoder ( Power DVD etc ) and continue its use.

    What are codecs Codecs/Filters.
Codec stands for Coder/Decoder. Basically it is a piece of software or a driver that adds a support for certain video/audio format for your operating system. With codec, your system recognizes the format the codec is built for and allows you to play the audio/video file (=decode) or in some cases, to change another audio/video file into that format (=(en)code).
For example, when you install Windows to your home computer, Windows installs automatically most commonly used codecs into the system, so you don't have to download them separately from their vendors. However there are some codecs that are widely used, but not installed by Windows. Most notably DivX , MPEG-2.
Get all the Codecs/Filters/Plugins you could ever need from:
    http://www.free-codecs.com/AC3_Filter_download.htm (ac3filter__0a_rc5)
    http://www.free-codecs.com/
NOTE: ( XviD-.0.3-2022004 for Divx ) Stand alone codec for playing Divx instead of the Divx full install.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...0/default.aspx
Ok, you now should be all set.
However Codecs/Filters/Plugins are like any other kind of software installed and things can go wrong. If things are not working as they should try the following.
    Download and install "Gspot"
http://gspot.headbands.com/download.htmlBuild 0307 - 23 KB Run the programme and simply point to system and select "List Codecs and other Filters"
Its a no brainer really to know whats what here and how to use it to find out the source of the issue, if you have one. If its red, its bad so you then need to trace the Filter/Codec to its source and remove it.
Here is just one very simple excample you may encounter and how it was fixed.
If you have ffdshow file is missing error pop up while running a player application, first go to C:\WINDOWS\system32 and search for ffdshow.en. Its proberly not here though. If it is just leave it be.
NOTE: ffdshow is used for AVI/Xvid enc/dec source.
To fix this "ffdshow Video Codec file is missing " error Simply uninstall your Xvid codec or your entire DivX programme, or any other Filter/Codec you have installed for playback of DivX files and AVI Video Files.
(Some times it seems a few Codecs/Filters dont get along so you must be aware of what you install).
Cheak "Gspot" again and Filter should be removed from the list.
Now you can reinstall the Xvid filter "XviD-.0.3-2022004" or your desired DivX programme.
Now go back toC:\WINDOWS\system32 and search for ffdshow.en. It should be there if it was not before. If the issue is back try a different version of required Filter.
So, thats just excample of a simple fix that got everything working again. Its not to hard to find out what the problem Codec/Filter is and then its just a case of uninstalling it. You can re-install the Codec/Filter but you should double cheak with "Gspot" and ensure the issue has not repeated itself .
If it has you can try and find out if the issue is related to another type filter causing a conflict or use an alternate Filter/Codec that will perform the same task .
Search for an updated version of required the Codec/Filter also.
Ok, thats pretty much the basics in getting correct and stable 5. sound working the way it should with your new Creative Audigy 2 ZS sound card.
I hope this has been of help.
    Regards,xmn.

  • How do I connect Apple TV and surround sound to my projector?

My current set up is that I have a projector connected to my Blu-Ray player. My surround sound speakers connect to my Blu-Ray player. They all came in the box together and the speaker wires all go into the Blu-Ray. Everything works perfectly.
However now I have bought an Apple TV and although I can play it through the projector, the sound is only through the projector and not the surround sound. I tried plugging the Apple TV in the HDMI in the projector and then connecting the Apple TV to the Blu-Ray via optical cable, but that didn't work.
In the back of the projector there is 1 HDMI port and an audio port but no optical port
In the back of the Blu-Ray, you have the speakers, the HDMI, the audio in and the optical port.
How can I connect everything so that I can use my Apple TV with surround sound?

The manual doesn't say anything an optical port on the BD ?
