4 x 4GB in W520

Hello:
I need to ask you a questions that I was not able to find the answer.
I have 2x4GB Kingston dimms and 2x4GB Patriot Dimms, how is setup the memory channels in W520 ??.
In the bottom is one channel so I can put the two Patriot there and below the keyboard the other channel or its's split ??.
The idea is to use the same brand for each channel.
 Thanks for the help.
Regards.

If you have a quadcore proc, one of each type of DIMM will be in the lower and upper slots. The pdf located at http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=lenovo%20w520%20dimm%20slots&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CEoQFjAB&ur...   has this information, including how to remove the keyboard. The channels are called "A and B".

  • W520 - Lenovo Password Manager - Can .CSV or .DAT files be imported from other Password Managers?

    The title says it all!
Currently using Norton Identity Safe's standalone password manager, but would like to start using Lenovo's instead. Attempted to import .DAT and/or .CSV files from Norton, but no option for these file types appeared in Lenovo's Password Manager.
If not an option to import directly, is it possible to add one of the files to the location Lenovo stores the password manger entries?

    Hello,
No you can't import .CSV or .DAT files into Password Manager. It uses a .PWM file format, and uses a 256-bit key Advanced
Encryption Standard (AES) with Microsoft CryptoAPI. You can export your info to be used in another machine with the Thinkvantage Password Manager installed, but not from another password manager.

  • Problems after re-installing Windows on W520

Hi I'm new to this forum, quite weird as I have been using this W520 for 3 years now...
I've recently re-installed Windows 7 64bit on my W520 and having some small problems.
    1. I can't have the mute-mic hotkey to work as the mute hotkey (no light) and nothing on the screen to indicate the hotkeys I just pressed. I've installed the Hotkey Features Integration for Windows 8 (32-bit, 64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bi...
    2. I don't know if I was using the Optimus Graphics feature before but I can't find it anywhere (device manager, Nvidia control panel, etc). I'm assuming that I was using the Quadro 1000M all the time as my battery life is not great. How can I know that I have it turned on?

    Hello.
You can try out an older version of the Hotkey Integration package, found here
For your graphics setup, you can check it in BIOS, go to Config - Display - Graphics Device, there you can select to either run Integrated or discrete only, and nVidia Optimus for both.
    Cheers!

  • W520 Win 8.1 - Would freeze up off dock

TIme fly's when you are having fun. I love my two year old W520:
    Intel Core i7-2760QM
    2 Samsung 520 256g SSD in Raid 0
    1 Samsung 530 1t SSD msata
I took up MS with their $30 Win 8 upgrade, and subsequent 8.1.  I do miss the power management utility that Win 7 had, but I'm good with the Win 8.1 thing ( except for that **bleep** kb2919355 that log jammed my windows update for a few weeks, but was able to get it to update).
Everything worked great at my dock, but when I removed it, to use it on my lap (it is a laptop, right?), It would freeze up. The pointer pad would not respond, and the trak pointer would still be able to point, but clicking on things would give me no response. Powercycle was the only way back.
I dreaded a reload from scratch ordeal, and I was stumped, after searching online. What in the world was the issue?
I tried turning on and off peripherals, and suspected my intel video driver. No luck.
In the course of troubleshooting, I pulled the W520 off the dock, and placed it on my desk. It worked fine. I then picked up the laptop and placed it on my lap. Crash and burn. What the hell? Is there something loose in the unit?
Poke and hope, and then I saw the icon on the control panel for “Lenono – Airbag Protection”, I saw that it was enabled with the highest setting for Shock Detection Sensitivity….
I disabled it, and guess what?
I now have a laptop that can be used as a laptop, and I didn’t have to try a dreadful OS / system reload!
I hope this story may help somebody out there!

Yup, SSD's don't need the Airbag Protection app like the older HD's. That was the first thing I uninstalled when I upgraded my W520 to SSD.

Hello and welcome to the forum!
Yes it will fit and it will work.
Here is a great pictorial on changing the display on a T530, but it's nearly identical to the W510.
If you get the full LCD assembly, things are even simpler. Just be mindful of the cables.

  • W520 rendered useless by ancient drivers

I use cinema 4d and The foundy's NUKE on my w520 when I travel. My issues concern the ancient display drivers currently available from lenovo:
These are almost a year old:
    Link to image
    Incapacitating issues
    C4D R15/R16
I recently started using Cinema 4d R15 and much to my chagrin, the 3d viewports consistently crashed about 5 minutes into using the software. No matter I tought, R16 is right around the corner. After installing R16 the problems persisted.
    NUKE 8.0
The upgrade to NUKE 8.0 (from 6.3) causes the node icons and pipes to disappear after 2 or 3 minutes of use, only leaving the text visible in the script network.
    A half functioning unstable machine
The only way to  (sort of) fix these issues has been thus:
1.- Uninstall all display drivers using Driver Sweeper
2.- Restart machine in discreet graphics mode (disabling optimus power saving features)
3.- Install the latest Quadro drivers from NVIDIA.
The problem with this setup is the motherboard sometimes changes back to optimus mode when shut down and screws up the startup of the machine; not to mention the now dismal battery life and needless heat generation and fan noise.
Ultimately this is a solution that is not realy a solution at all; and it's bitterly disappointing to see that in the end I was a fool for not buying a macbook pro as everyone said I should.
The W520 hardware is great, and I know releasing certified OEM drivers is a process that takes time. But almost a year?
After dealing with this issue for the last four or five months I'm ready to give up and buy a new machine even though I have a perfectly functional one right now. I simply need my computer to run the software  I use to make a living.
    Questions
Are updated drivers even in the pipeline?
Is there a way to get good optimus functionality while using NVIDIA reference drivers?
    Any help would be appreciated

    Hello.
I´ve been using nVidia's drivers on my W520 for the last couple of years, Windows 7 / 8 / 8.1 and now currently on the Windows 10 Tech Preview. I've had zero issues with Optimus functionality using them apart from having to reset them completely once I upgraded to Windows 8, but they wouldn't stay on Auto-Select in Global Settings - Base Profile. A simple clean install of the nVidia drivers did the trick.
I have Optimus selected in BIOS and run it on Auto for everything, but I use a couple of helpers, available in the settings for the nVidia drivers to better keep track of GPU usage on the machine, but I tick "Add "Run with graphics processor" to context menu" and "Display GPU activity icon in Notification Area". That way I can right click a program shortcut and force it to run on the GPU of my choosing, and the GPU activity icon will show you which programs are currently running on your nVidia GPU.
    nVidia Quadro settings
Everything I run on it does so flawlessly, be it CAD, gaming, HW accelerated media playback, you name it.
I am now using the QNF (Quadro New Features) drivers, and so far they're very stable and perform amicably.

  • T60 KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

    Hello,
I've got an 8'ish year old T60 with all original components except the fan. I've been getting a KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR for about two years now. I understand it's typically due to a failure of the HDD or the hard drive connecting cables. In more rare cases it can also be a memory/processor/motherboard. It's annoying, but manageable. Sometimes it happens 3 times in two hours... actually it just restarted on me in the middle of typing this! Other days it doesn't restart for days. But it has gotten progressively worse.
I've run memtest to check the RAM - no problems. I've ran multiple HDD tests - no problems. I've run disk repair utilities - either no problems or it reports it fixed all issues. The CPU temperature never rises above 73 degrees, and it rarely goes above 65 degrees, so overheating is not an issue. My total available HDD memory has not decreased at all (still at the original 88.2GB), so it doesn't seem like an imminent HDD failure. I've had no noticeable data loss. Sometimes when it restarts it launches the disk repair utility, does the repair and then boots fine. Other times it gives odd messages, like there is no drive to boot from, or a fan error, but after a reboot there is no issue.
With the experience of the T60 users on the forum, I wanted to ask, am I looking at a HDD failure, or a HDD connector cable failure?
If the HDD fails, my plan is to purchase a HGST Travelstar 7200rpm SATA III 32MB Cache 1TB.
If the cable fails, I have no idea if it's possible to replace.
I routinely backup all my data, so that's not an issue. So far this is more of a nuisance, but it seems to be getting worse by the week. Any thoughts?

    Hello.
This definitely sounds like bad sector issues on your HD, and since it's been going on for a
long time, it's way past due to swap it out. In a T60, there is no cable, the SATA port is directly
attached to the motherboard, and if this was a failure in the soldering, you'd have much more
    serious issues at hand.
Have you checked your drive for bad sectors registered in the SMART data of the drive itself?
Running all kinds of tools to repair it, including chkdsk only blocks those sectors, which will
continue to multiply after repairs. This is only a certain grace period you get when they start
appearing and a drive swap is absolutely recommended at the first sign of such failure.
The fastest way to view the SMART data is to fire up a Linux LiveCD and view the HD status
in the Disk Utility there, or you can use f.e. this tool in Windows. There are many others.
    HDTune
Give it a whirl and see if your problem doesn't lie in a rapidly deteriorating drive.

  • PrtSC button on T430 is not working

I can't capture screen images with PrtSc button on Lenovo T430. I tried every combination like using Alt+PrtSc, Ctrl+PrtSc and Fn+PrtSc.
Somebody suggested to use windows Snipping Tool to capture images but I dont want it as its very slow and need lots of keystrokes +mouse clicks to capture screen image.
    Please help.

    Hello.
On my T430s, Alt+PrtSc captures the desktop just fine onto the clipboard to be pasted into which ever image program you use. Paint being the most common one to use for this. So it's pretty much the same number of actions that you have to use instead of just using the Snipping Tool.
But if you're running Windows 8, you can use Win+PrtSc to capture and save a screenshot with one keystroke. It gets saved as .png into YourUserFolder\Pictures\Screenshots.
    Hope this helps.

  • Wifi very slow on Helix after fresh install of 8.1, do I need the Intel Wireless LAN "drivers"?

I'm getting a few hundred kbps on downloads from MSFT's dev site, which typically are 1MB/sec for me on this Helix. Just did a fresh install, but am using stock Windows 8.1 wifi drivers. Do I need to install something specifically for Helix, like the Intel files?

If there is a dedicated driver from the manufacturer for your hardware for your current OS, you should always choose that over the stock Windows drivers.
Best thing for your Helix would be to run the Lenovo System Update to get your machine up to specs in the driver department.
I always stick to the Lenovo issued drivers for my ThinkPads and stay far, far away from any Windows Update drivers. They are absolutely a no-no for me.

  • Windows 8.1 Camera

I am writing a program that opens up a camera feed to display within an OpenGL window. Using DirectShow this works no problem.
However, I need to access the Built-In Front&Rear camera on a Microsoft Surface Tablet with this program. I can access these correctly IF the Windows Camera App is running else the feed doesn't connect (because i'm guessing the camera is off), but I
would like to be able to "Activate" the camera within my own code and simply pull the stream with DirectShow, skipping having to run a separate windows app to simply turn the camera on!
Is there a Win API call etc that simply turns the Camera On/Off?
I have looked EVERYWHERE! But cannot seem to find anything, just falling down an infinite rabbit hole of Windows App SDK and I don't feel this is necessary to achieve a simple on/off switch....
    Thanks!

    Hello.
There are some webcam enhancements and updates through the Lenovo Settings Dependency package that is required for the ModernUI Lenovo Settings app, which provides additional controls for the webcam, do you have that installed?
    Lenovo Settings @ Windows Store
    Lenovo Settings Dependency Package
If that doesn't work, you can try opening up Control Panel -> Device Manager -> Right click your Integrated Camera in the Imaging Devices category, select uninstall and check delete drivers in the next dialog window. Then reboot the machine, allowing Windows to install the default Windows drivers for the camera, but this method has worked for many different machines.

Hello, you can upgrade / create installation media by following the instructions on this page:
Upgrade to Windows 8.1 from Windows 7
The upgrade process should detect your key in BIOS, so you don't have to enter it, but should
you get the request to enter your key, you can use this little program to reveal your key.

    No, they are not compatible.
VGA has three component analog signals (R, G, and B) with NO sync at all on them, and separate 5 volt horizontal and vertical sync signals on two separate leads.
SVHS uses component analog Y, Pb, Pr signals.
Sometimes a display with a VGA input can accept a component analog Y, Pb, Pr signal because it's set up internally to decode those signals into RGB, but not vice-versa.
