40% cpu spike when scrolling

When I start to scroll rapidly in Safari, Finder, and other apps, the cpu load bumps up by a massive 40% (WindowServer).
Isn't this load supposed to be handled by the GPU? What's wrong?
I'm on a Mid 2009 Macbook Pro, 8 GB RAM, SSD. Everything worked flawlessly in Mavericks.

...is that with every patch or just when you select a random patch after you opened the concert and then it's o.k.?...
i'm asking because i have a similar issue: when i open my concert the cpu spikes when i hit a pad (that's connected to my looper plugin)...after that the system/mainstage is 100% fine, meaning i don't have any peaks or crashes or whatever...my workaround is that right after i opened the concert i hit various pads on different controllers (different midi channels) and let the system/mainstage peak and after that it's o.k...it seems like mainstage needs a "wake up call" and then behaves "normal"...

  • MacBook Pro System CPU Spikes When Unplugged

Upgraded to Mavericks a few days ago and, whenever I unplug my MacBook Pro 13" (Early 2011 - 2.3GHz Intel Core i5 - 16GB RAM 1333MHz) and run just on the battery, my system CPU usage goes through the roof which results in my Mac running/responding very slowly and buggy.
However, looking at the iStat widget on my dashboard, it's reporting that my CPU isn't running hot nor does my MacBook Pro feel hot at all. It's also showing that I still have 10GB of RAM free.
As expected, once my magsafe is reattached to my laptop and plugged back in, the system CPU returns to a normal level. In Activity Monitor, it shows kernel_task as being the culprit.
I queried the log as suggested by Linc and TextEdit had something for me:
    Dec 10 15:51:31 My-MBP kernel[0] <Debug>: Process Setup Assistant [307] disabling system-wide I/O Throttling
Anyone have any idea what this could be? Seems like it should be a simple software config but I just don't know.
Additionally, I also ran EtreCheck. These are the results when it's running unplugged:

Does anyone have any ideas on why this is happening or are experiencing anything similar? I can't for the life of me figure out if it's a Mavericks issue or if it's a hardware issue.  Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks!

You're not going to believe this but I just now found a working solution!!!
Thanks to the talents of a man named, Rhys Oxenhams, and his flawless tutorial, eveything's running normally now!
BEFORE READING ON...make sure you backup all of you data!  I take no responsibility for anything bad that happens to your machine.  I'm providing this information because it worked for me. There's no guarantee it will work on your system.  TAKE ALL NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS BEFORE READING ON and BACKUP YOUR DATA IMMEDIATELY.
Here's what you need to do:
    1. In the Finder menu bar, click on Go and select Computer. 2. In the window that comes up, double-click your computer's HD. For me, it's Macintosh HD. 3. From there, click on System > Library > Extensions. 4. Now look for a file called IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext. 5. Right-click on IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext and choose Show Package Contents. 6. In that new window that comes up, click on Contents > Plugins and locate ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext. 7. Just like in step 5, right-click on ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext and choose Show Package Contents. 8. Just like in step 6, in that new window that comes up, click on Contents > Resources and locate your Model Identifer.
         • In case you don't know what your Model ID is, click on the  in the top left of the screen and choose About This Mac     • In the window that comes up, click on More Info...     • In the next window that comes up, click on System Report     • In the very first screen, towards the top, locate the entry Model Identifier          - Write this info down on a piece of paper. You will need it. In my case, I wrote down MacBookPro8,1 9. Back in the Resources folder, locate the .plist file that has your model identifier. In my case, it was MacBookPro8,1.plist 10. You're not going to delete that file but instead move it to a differnt folder inside your home folder--doesn't matter which folder, just put it somewhere inside your home folder. 11. Restart your machine and you are good to go!
Let me know how it turns out for you.  REMINDER: Backup your data before doing this!

                        Submit it hangs
    Thanks

    Salman,
There is an Apache timeout directive that you can increase, which should solve both problems. It looks like after the timeout the request is being retried, which may be the result of a different Apache directive. The access and error logs should show you some useful information about these cases. Some other reader might offer what those directives are, I'm not sure.
That you are seeing the page processes complete even though the HTTP request times out is not strange. Once the server-side code is invoked, the request timeout cannot stop it.

  • Logic Pro 9 - CPU SPIKE!

I don't know why, but I am constantly having cpu spikes when running Logic Pro 9.
I am using plugins like waves, blue cat audio and some midi drums with kontakt 5.
I did freeze ALL the tracks, put some plugins on bypass, but nothing worked.
Is there any solution on this?
    I am running on a Mac Mini Server (Mid 2011), witch has an 128GB SSD Corsair + 500GB HD 7200RPM, 8GB of RAM and a 2.0Ghz i7 Quad-Core.

You cán do something, because from your screenshot I can see that you are using the Source Only freeze mode (Blue freeze button) for your audio tracks - this in fact does not alter the load on the CPU at all, since all inserted plugins still have to process the exact same audio anyway in source only mode. Youcan readabout that in the part of the manual I linked to.
In short: you need to use Pre Fader freeze mode (Green freeze button) instead, so the plugins also get included in the frozen file, and are bypassed after freezing (even though they stay "lit", as if they're not bypassed, but they are).
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/logicpro/usermanual/index.html#chapter=9%26sec tion=16%26tasks=true
Also, in my opinion you are using too many similar plugins (GEQ, Channel EQ, Multipressor) on the same channel strip(s). Multipressor for instance is CPU intensive. Same goes for many of the Waves stuff, much of it is CPU heavy, especially plugins that emulate classic hardware.

  • Random cpu spikes in 10.6.3 ??

i have a Mainstage session which runs smoothly and comfortably on my 15" Penryn 2.66GHz 10.5.8 Macbook Pro.
It also runs smoothly and comfortably on a unibody 10.5.8 13" 2.2GHz Macbook Pro.
But my brand new 15" 2.66GHz 10.6.3 Macbook Pro shows random CPU spikes when i run Mainstage.. and my session experiences audio and midi glitching.
Logic Studio is the only software installed on this new machine, aside from the bundled OS stuff.
the sessions were created in Mainstage 2.1
the new machine runs Mainstage 2.1.1
anyone else experiencing anything like this?

Just putting in my voice... I am also getting the same CPU spikes. You are not alone.
I suspect any number of things are causing the spikes, even when everything is idle, from Mainstage itself, the TASCAM US-144 audio interface, Korg nano-series devices, 3rd party plugs (major companies or not).
I just started using Mainstage this week, but I've been using Logic for years.
I know how to set up an efficient channel strip. There is no reason for my CPU to spike. If I use the same series of instruments, fx plugs, sends, aux channels, etc in Logic 9, the CPU barely takes a hit. THe REAL drag here is that the purpose of using Mainstage instead of Logic is the Loopback feature, which is missing in Logic on its own.
At this point, besides Mainstage being the main culprit, I've narrowed it down to two other culprits: NI Guitar Rig 4, and (this one is odd) Audio Damage EOS. When I instantiate either one of these, the CPU dances or finally goes over the edge and "POP" is heard. Have to quit Mainstage to get sound again.
    Buffer overload? Bad memory management/leaks?
I really don't care WHAT the issue is, just as long as I know WHEN Apple will address the problem and issue a fix soon.

  • ITunes causes 90% CPU usage when the info window scrolls the song title

What's up with that little info window under the iTunes title? When the song title exceeds the width of the window iTunes does a little right to left banner scroll of the text. Whenever this happens the CPU jumps to 90% and stays there. This is especially bad for radio stations that have long text message strings in their titles. I have to keep iTunes minimized to avoid this GUI bug.
This just started happening with iTunes 7 and 7.0.1
      Windows XP

iTunes on MBP in miniplayer mode and streaming to airport express.  Wife changes songs through iPad remote and the CPU spikes to 90% and stays there.  If I then select regular window mode, the CPU drops back to 7-8% (where it was before song change).  It doesn't happen if I change songs through the MBP iTunes, only through the iPad remote.  It's like it starts a process and doesn't close it out.
There's a couple of different things that can be going on here. Let's check on the one that involves the Mini Player first.
It seems to happen when the main iTunes player is set to Cover Flow rather than List view.
If you set iTunes to List view prior to switching to the Mini Player, does that stop the excessive CPU use while in Mini Player?

  • BookmarkDav Client spikes my cpu usage when I start up my computer

Has anyone noticed that the BookmarkDav client spikes the CPU usage when it first starts up? Is this something that can be fixed or is there a problem? Thanks for the help.

It has to startup just like everything else in the system, so it's probably normal

  • High CPU usage when graphics card is put at work

I have a 13inch Air with 2GB RAM and 256GB  with Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. All possible updates have been installed.
I noticed some tearing when trying to move program windows across the screen so I started checking the CPU usage. I saw that it is spiking to 25-35% when moving a window across the screen. When you drag down a window you can see the different copies of the top bar across the screen. Not smooth at all like on a standard PC windows system. Same issue when scrolling through webpages which spikes the cpu
I also noticed a high cpu usage when playing mkv files 25-30% while on an Atom HTPC i get a lower load playing the same file. The Air should be faster than an atom with a nvidia 9400m when playing video files.
I already tried updating the nvidia files to the latest version on their site by hacking the driver inf but this did not resolve the issue.
Has anyone experienced the same or know what could be causing the beavior?
    Many thanks

Maybe my initial post was not clear so let me add some clarifications.
I have the problem with Aero disabled
I have the problem on the Apple site which does not have any flash content.
I have already hacked the lastest nvidia drivers to get them on my system which did not change anything. Can you provide a link to some other 'supported' beta drivers?
I am using the new 13 inch air so it has the newer graphics card so I would expect it to be faster than an old HTPC with a 9400m in it. I wasn't stating that my Air had a 9400m.
It would be great if someone you also do the test to check the cpu load:
    - when playing a 720 mkv
    - when dragging a window across the screen
Just open task manager and see if the CPU spikes.
    Many thanks!

  • CPU Spike

I'm having big issues with cpu spikes  (9.1.7/  OS 10.7.3) Seems to be most prominent when arrange page is scrolling. Is this a problem many are sharing. It is really affecting my work flow!!
    thanks

Similar issues here with scrolling and cpu spike (with accompanying extreme heat spikes) on early 2007 15 inch MBP and Lion.
Question 1: what cost and process are involved in upgrading my GPU? Currently using the factory-installed ATI Radeon X1600 128MB along with 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. What would fix this at an extreme price-point?
Question 2: not being very tech savvy myself, what could Apple do (in theory and practice) to address this? Seems to me this is a clumsy enough and common enough problem that Apple really ought to be smart about it and address it. But first discussion boards about it appear in early/mid 2011 from what I've seen, so what's up? I do not expect to be able to move my old 2007 MBP into Mountain Lion (some frustration, but fair enough - things move on, and five years is not unreasonable), but I do think it is in Apple's best interest to at least keep older models cooperating with Lion as this greatly increases workflow efficiency with newer Mountain Lion systems. I was seriously on the fence about going back to PC - a stupid problem like this will affect my decisions in future.
I'm not running any particularly demanding programs (at least not from my perspective) - just MS Office, Safari or Firefox, Mail, etc... I have intentionally cleaned out the HD and reduced the program load - hoping to keep the laptop going as a basic desktop workstation for word processing etc... and have an efficient workflow with Lion and my new, 13 inch MBP.
A fix with more customizable options for scrolling and such seems to me (no computer programing expertise) like it could be appropriate here - there is already the option to turn off smooth scroll or whatever, right? Why not add a few other options to make scrolling less demanding on the CPU for slightly older models?

  • I7 CPU Spikes - worse than Core2Duo!

I just got a spanking new 2.2 i7 MacBook Pro, and I'm having WORSE performance with Logic 9 than my old 3.06 Core2Duo MacBook. This is unacceptable. One thread of 8 shown in the CPU meter is pulsing high, spiking in the red while logic is just sitting idle. The other 7 show practically nothing.
Any insight into what's going on, or what I can do to fix it?

    Hi,
I found something really interesting today, something which was an issue in GarageBand years ago. Like so many others I've had issues with sudden CPU spikes and uneven CPU load in Logic 9 (I'm on a 27 inch Thunderbolt i5 iMac with an Apogee Duet 2 audio interface) and I've been experimenting with disabling inputs, ensuring an audio track is always selected when not recording, trying to optimize things using buses - all the normal stuff. The issues still persisted however and was driving me nuts.
Suddenly I recalled this old Garageband issue where the graphics were using a lot of CPU and the solution was to zoom out until the whole song fit on one screen, i.e. avoid the live scrolling. I tried this in Logic today (by de-selecting the "running man" catch icon in the arrange window) and to my surprise the CPU load was dramatically reduced. Also tried making the window smaller, bascially limiting the area Logic needs to redraw - same effect!
Now this seems like a real bug to me, can't understand why the GUI update thread should ever be able to interfere with the audio, but at least on this iMac if I exapnd the arrange window to fill all 27 inches of screen real estate and rec-enable an audio track I can easily reproduce the problem.
    Hope this helps someone.
    /alex

  • High CPU Usage when Idle

    Hello Crew!!!
I have been using a ThinkPad Z60t, running the OS WinXP Pro that came bundled with the Thinkvantage Software. I have had no problems with my computer for the two years I have been using it. I use it as much if not more then a traditional desktop, covering all aspects of my life, from business to gaming (although it is not a gaming comp, it does me fine). Recently, within the last week or so, I noticed a huge lag-like spike every minute or less, including when the system is idle and isn't playing anything. I ran McAfee as well as AdAware and found no issues out of the ordinary. After reading a few forumn posts, on other websites, I ran a processes check, with Microsoft based software "Sysinternals" and found that over 50-80% of my processor was being used by Deffered Procedure Calls (DPC's) and Hardware interrupts. I chose to reinitialize my entire system, back to factory settings, wiped it all. Guess what it is still doing it!!!!
I have completely updated my OS, and other forumns suggest that there is a hardware issue, or intermittent signal with the CPU or Motherboard, what can I do to test this theory or to find solutions, please help me!!!!!

It is not "normal" and cannot be "normal". Programmers like that must be fired immediately.
It's like iTunes - scroll cover flow fast enough, and you can get memory usage up to 1GB (!!?) which is even not fully returned after you stop scrolling.
And those people are making jokes about Windows? Yes, it is ugly but when they have blunders like this, at least they correct them. Just returned from the shop, wanted to buy 27" iMac. 3.06GHz model was running Parallels with Vista, processor usage continuously like 3-5%. iMac was cooking - if I put my face 0.5m from the screen, I could feel the heat!
I don't know about iTunes... some of the recent Mac apps (Safari, iTunes) are so slow/inefficient I stay away from them. However, Logic's CPU use when idle is completely normal for a "real time" application that starts approx 20 threads minimum. All DAW application do this to some extent, some more than Logic.
What's not normal is how much heat the new Macbook, MBP and iMacs are generating, the folks over on the Macbook forums are starting to see heat related failures.
As a side note, Windows 7 is much more efficient than Windows XP_Professional, that's saying something as XP is a good real time DAW OS. After Vista I didn't expect much but Win_7 is a nice OS.

  • CPU spikes - what's the latest?

I posted a question about this in another thread but haven't heard anything back yet - and am desperate for answers so figured I'd try again!
I've just started having a big problem with CPU spikes, seemingly out of the blue.
After having had no problems (that have affected my workflow at least) since updating to Logic 8 when it first came out, the last 2 songs I've worked on have both started having repeated CPU spikes. In both cases the songs (which have for the previous couple of weeks been running fine as I've worked on them) suddenly seem to reach some kind of critical mass and stop at least 4 or 5 times in the song (with a processor overload) making it impossible to mix. The spikes themselves appear to occur every 10 seconds or so.
Though the songs have previously been fine during sections with many tracks, plugins and instruments running, once this starts happening even the most sparse sections can suddenly no longer play without overloading.
In the past, bouncing any instruments to audio or freezing processor-intensive tracks would clearly lessen the load and allow the song to play without a hiccup, but it seems once this starts happening that any attempts I make to pare the song back barely help at all. Even if, in between spikes, the song is running with about 25% max on the CPU meter, when a spike comes both processors momentarily max out and stop the track.
Strangely, with the latest song, even reverting to previous versions (ie from a few days ago when I was having absolutely no problems of this kind) the computer can suddenly no longer cope with the spikes (which I assume have been happening all along but haven't affected playback before now). Weird but true.
I've tried disabling all audio unit plug ins in AU manager, setting all channel strip inputs to no input, running the song using Core Audio rather than the MOTU 828 and repairing permissions with DiskUtility.
Today I tried a clean install of 10.5.3 and 8.0.2 on a new drive (no 3rd party plugins or ANYTHING apart from Logic and OSX installed) - still with exactly the same result.
I've even tried copying all the audio from the arrange into a brand new song, adding the plugins and routing to busses track by track, all the while keeping an eye on the CPU meter. As soon as I've sent just a couple of tracks to aux channels and added only 3 or 4 instances of Channel EQ and Compressor I notice the spiking begin. It's clear that by the time I've finished the setting up of the song the spikes will be maxing out again.
I realise I'm running an old machine (ie Dual 1G G4) but it has, up until now, been working spot on under the current system (I've been using 10.4.11 and hadn't updated to Leopard until today cos I haven't wanted to upset the delicate equilibrium!)
Thankfully I've found a clunky workaround by copying the song on to my Macbook and running that in my studio - a lifesaver but not satisfactory. (I can see the spikes on the Macbook too but playback isn't affected).
I've been using Logic forever and know this behaviour (and unresponsiveness to all my troubleshooting attempts) isn't normal!
I've seen the threads from a few months back but am wondering is anybody else out there still having similar issues? Or has anyone had them and solved them?
    Please help!
    Cheers
    Duane

The latest? It's still spikes constantly here. IMHO, I think there is an issue with-in LP 8 itself with symetric multi-tasking to more than one core... evenly distributing the load between cores. It's hit or miss with me & completely un-predictable and random (the CPU spikes). I've tried all the same quick fixes or work-arounds, of which none seem to make any difference at all. Even setting core audio buffer to 1024 & disabling safety buffer.
Oddly I do find it interesting that on my system anyway, Ivory 1.7 & Atmosphere 1.2, once initially instantiated on an inst track, will consistently evenly distribute between both cores (I have a dual core machine)... and never spike the CPU, no matter how much polyphony I use on either one, with the core audio buffer set to 128. There has to be something the way these two virtual synth plugs are coded differently, to utilize an even symetric threading or distribution to multi cores. -> I am no computer wiz tech head by any means, but this is the best way I can explain it.
    Fresh clean install of OSX Leopard 10.5.4 / 2.5GB Ram / LP 8.0.2 / Digi Core Audio 7.4 / Digi 002R

  • MainStage 2 performance / CPU Spikes

    MainStage 1 was almost perfect.
Just to join the misery ... Same problems (i am reading about on Forums everywhere) here with MainStage 2. Huge cpu spikes and stuttering audio from Virtual Synths. Basically unplayable. CPU usage is at least 30% higher, even when NOTHING is happening. Also memory usage behaves strange, its way too high. Nr of Virtuals doenst really matter, lets say 3x a Native Instr B4II is enough to crack it.
Strangely enough .. as a Rewire App (receiving 20 channels from Ableton, and mixing them in MainStage) ... it behaves quite well.
They got to be working on a fix here. I Hope. Any Apple insider reading this who has word ?

    44100KhZ / 16Bit.
After re-creating my entire concert from scratch, my problems are 'sortof' over.
    No audio stutters anymore.
Conclusion : Importing MS1 concerts in MS2 is probably not without errors.

Still, CPU Usage Meter goes crazy (randomly in RED).
I know .. many people told me .. don't worry .. its fine.
Just don't like it, and if the MS2 CPU Usage Meter is mirroring the one in Activity Monitor, whats the bloody use anyway ?

Memory Usage behaves strange. Its rising and rising while i am changing patches. Seems to me Memory Management has a bug.
    Still hoping for a fix.

  • Java 1.4.2 version CPU spike to 100%, require tools to monitor CPU spike

    Hi,
When using our application CPU is spiked to 100% (Suspecting memory leak here). The Java version used is Java 1.4.2_04. This CPU spike is seen only when more users are logged in (may be around 25 users and more).
Any tools to monitor the CPU spike (other than perfmon) ? How to nail down the memory leak issue or CPU spike in code perspective.
Please suggest some tools to do monitoring as well..
    Thanks in Advance.

It's quite heard to create a memory leak with Java (except from creating objects in a loop or something like that). Perhaps it's only the garbage collector? If you have a memory leak you don't only get a CPU spike, but the VM will exit if the heap space is full.
I used JProfiler before and it's really good.

  • 30EA3: Monitor sessions grid freezes when scrolling lo last session

    Hi,
I've found an issue with the Monitor Sessions grid.
Steps to reproduce the problem (scenario I have tested an reproduced the issue)
    1. Open monitor sessions window
    2. Order the grid by "OS User" column (In this scenario, my "OS user" is the last one alphabetically)
    3. Scroll down in the grid, until reach the last record (as mentioned above, the last session is the same session that is monitoring since my user is the last one alphabetically)
Then SQL Developer freezes, processor time and memory start to increase; and also, seems that SQL Developer window is trying to get the focus, so it doesnt let me navigate freely to other applications, is even difficult to open task manager to kill the process since SQL developer window in the background keeps getting the focus of mouse and keyboard.
    Thanks and regards
    Ramiro Teran

    Hi Raghu,
    1. As I mentioned, the scenario I tested was the "Monitor Sessions" grid, at first I only tested scrolling down to the last record, in the master grid using the mouse wheel, but now I have also tried crtl+end, and it also happens
    2. 184 records in parent grid (Sessions)
    3. The child grid is the "Active SQL" tab (first tab) of the detail of the session.
    4. Yes, there was a cell in master selected, but when scrolling down and reaching the bottom (or doing ctrl+end), then the last cell is selected automatically, and SQLDeveloper freezes.
As mentioned in my first post, the SQLDeveloper not only freezes, but doesn't let you navigate to other windows (every couple of seconds SQLDeveloper gets focus on its window, even though is frozen)
I have took an screenshot showing the issue, even though, maybe you can't appreciate the issue on an image, since the image only shows the last record of the monitor sessions grid selected, (at that time SQL developer is hanged, and doens't respond to clics or keyboard comands). Also it shows the Task Manager showing increased memory and CPU ussage from the SQL Developer process. If you're interested in this screenshot, let me know where/how to upload it
    Thanks and Regards
    Ramiro
