400 minutes onto a DVD

Here's where I stand. The client has a 400 question trivia game that they want on a DVD. Each question will have 3 versions: one with a 30-second countdown, one with a 20-second countdown and one with a 10-second countdown. So the questions will actually be video tracks unless there is another way to apply a countdown. There will also be an introduction animation, so there will actually be more than 400 minutes.
Any suggestions on how to handle this?

400 Minutes would require a rate of about 2.6 http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm
If these are the same questions you could just drop markers in at the 20 and 10 second sections and send the person to the marker, so that would make the 400 questions really 200 minutes. (There is a limit on the markers in each track, but you should be okay) Something you may want to consider is buttons over video. The background for the track would be the countdown, while the overlays would be the questions themselves...could save work on the prep side and it make be worth trying and see how it looks.
A variation on the bingo http://dvdstepbystep.com/bingo.php may work for the questions, that one handled 75 questions in one group.
It is a interesting project but there is going to be some scripting and alot of leg/prep work. There is not going to be one way to do this though. (If the client was interested in Flash/Director or Program of some sort it would be alot easier )

Urgent help need to compress 4 hrs of footage onto 1 dvd

hi people any one know the settings i will need to compress 4 hours of footage onto a single layer dvd? the footage is of a seminar so not much action but will still need best quality possible have been using compressor 2 and got a complete head ache as lowest settings state i can only fit 174 minutes on a dvd that coupled with the compression times of over 185 hours at times. so im gonna re install compressor 1.2.1 and try again with that
but any help would be greatfully appreciated

If it was me, I'd be looking at using BitVice to create a half D1 file... pretty much half the file size, and by most people's accounts a better quality than MPEG1. It works by reducing the horizontal resolution - the DVD player re-sizes the footage and there is pretty good reproduction.
Any encoder that can create the encode at 352x576 will be OK, but I know Bitvice will and have used it to do so. Since the file sizes are smaller for the same bitrate, you can fit twice as much footage on. You can easily get 4 hours of Half D1 onto a DVD-R.
Have a look at this graph to get more of a feel for how the different resolutions can work. I don't necessarily agree with all of the info there- the notion of 'fair' quality and 'good' quality being subjective terms and not always applicable to all source types or motion types, etc... but it's a good starting point nonetheless.

What's the maximum size and length that go onto a DVD

I'm trying to put a whole load of home videos onto DVDs. What is the maximum size that can be burnt onto a DVD. There are a lot of hours on here, about 15 and I was hoping to try and get about 3 hours per DVD is this possible?

If you're referring to a video DVD which will plan on a TV set via a DVD player then a single layer DVD disk can hold 120 minutes of playing time which includes the basic material and any animated menus in the project.
A double layer disk can hold 240 minutes.
If you are creating a data disk with the files copied to it then its a matter of grouping the files into batches of either slightly less than 4.7 GB for single layer and 9.4 GB for double layer.
if you're referring to video DVD discs follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

Fitting four hours onto a DVD?

Hello all.
Is there any way using Compressor to fit four hours of video onto a DVD?
When i try to compress, it gives me a maximum amount of something lie 174 minutes at a CBR of 2.
Any advice?

I created a custom compression setting that allowed me to get 4 hours onto a single DVD5 (the 4.7gig single layer DVDs). However, the footage looked absolutely terrible.
It is much better to go with the 150 Min compression and put it on a Dual Layer DVD (DVD9: 8.5gigs of space).

I am having a hard time converting all of the videos I've taken of my kids from my iphone onto a dvd. I would like the videos to play consecutively as if we were watching home movies from our regular video recorder. How can I convert my videos to one dvd?

If the total playing time for all of the videos is less than 120 minutes create a slideshow in iDVD and add the movies to it in the order you want them to play. Select any slide duration time except manual. Do not add any music to the slideshow as it will override the audio in the video files and do not add any transition as it won't be a smooth transition.

Burning a movie onto a dvd

I made a 4 minute movie on imovie. I want to burn it onto a dvd so it can be viewed on a dvd player or on another computer. How do I do it?

You need to use an authoring program to burn a DVD disk that can be played on both computers and DVD players. That is what the iLife application iDVD is designed to do. Use it. The basic process is that you open iDVD and create a new project. You will need to select standard or widescreen. Once iDVD opens, go to its Preferences and select PAL or NTSC depending on where you live. In the US, you need to use NTSC. Next choose a theme. Then use the Movies tab to locate your iMovie and drag/drop your iMovie into the main menu of iDVD. You can customize the font type, size and color in your iDVD project. When you have finished editing the project, you can either create a disk image file of it and burn disks from that using Disk Utility, or you can just insert a blank DVD disk and burn it directly.
Be sure to use a good brand of DVD disk such as Verbatim, Maxell, Sony or Taiyo Yuden; not store brands, TDK or Memorex.
Also, select a burn speed of 4x or less.

CS5 - Burning HD footage onto a DVD

I don't have a Blu-Ray burner but would like to burn some footage from my HDV camera onto a DVD-R while maintaining the HD resolution. I also have yet to upgrade to CS5. I've heard said that you can convert to AVCHD and burn to a standard DVD that will work in some Blu-Ray players such as the PS3 using a combination of programs including Nero.
So, is there a way to do this using Premiere & Encore CS5? I don't want to downconvert it but just burn as much playable HD footage with menus to a standard DVD. If it is possible, what is the process? If it isn't possible with just Premiere/Encore, is there a better way? Thanks.

Procedure is very easy: make a BluRay iso (img) in Encore and burn it with Nero or ImgBurn to a dvd. All you need is a BR-player either pc or standalone. No need for a BR-burner.
A regular dvd holds about 20 minutes of HDV/HD.

I have 4.7 gig, 120 minute DVDs, and need to compress 1 hour and 40 minutes of footage (I want to put the footage on my DVD as a QT file). Is MPEG4 the best way? If so, what settings do you recommend?

I am off-loading some editing work to another editor. I have about 10 hours of documentary footage and want to give the editor QT files on DVD, rather than the original tapes. He is using Premier and doesn't, I don't think, have QT7. One suggestion was to create data DVDs, i.e. just drop the QT files right onto a DVD. Is the best thing to make sure the sequences I export are under 120 minutes and 4.7 gigs? Thanks.

Fit 2 1/2 hour program onto a DVD

I have a 2 1/2 hour program I cut in FCP7 with chapter markers for DVD Studio Pro. I tried to burn a DVD in DVDStudioPro and was told program was too long. What can I do now to fit it onto 1 DVD and still have chapter markers? I'm not much of an editor and was forced to do this project when my "real" editor had to bale.

This is an SD project.

The setting will tell you how many minutes you can expect to fit on a standard DVD-5 when you adjust the average data rate. Maximum bit rate will not effect how many minutes will fit on the disc. You may want to do a one minute test of a complex part of the video (lots of motion, pans, etc) to see what it will look like. You could be disappointed with the quality.
The alternative would be to make a dual-layer disc but unless you are having them manufactured vs. duplicated playback compatibility could be less than desirable with DL+/- media. Studios almost always make dual-layer discs (manufactured from a glass master at a replication facility) to ensure that the highest quality encoding can be used and will fit on the DL disc.

I need to get them onto a DVD that will play in my dvd player because they are all the videos I have of my kids when they were babies(bad I know!) First you need to get them onto your Mac. Use image capture and download them to a folder on the Desktop. Next, you need a video DVD authoring program. IMO iDVD is the best.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Softwareor eBay.com. Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides themes from iDVD 5-7. The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:

You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

Some themes will only allow 6 items per menu, including sub menus, others up to 10 I believe. Sub menus can always be added to add more movies to the project. How can I get an iMovie on my iPad onto a DVD?

Hi! I wish to move an iMovie from my iPad onto a DVD. I do not have a mac but I have an asus computer and blank DVDs. I've been trying to get it to work by accessing my videos then copying the video to the desktop, then moving the video to the desktop and then burning it to the disk, but it's not working. It always says error. Is it in the wrong format? What do I do? I really have to get this done tonight so all answers appreciated! Thanks so much!!

My turning it into a standard video DVD in mpeg2 format - which is what iDVD does.
Alternatively export it as a Quicktime file.

What kind of DVD disk do you want to create? A data disk that just contains the image files or a video DVD disc that can be played on a DVD player on a TV set. They are two entirely different types of disks and require different workflows.
If you're running Yosemite then you have iPhoto 9.6 or 9.6.1.
For a data disk:
1 - select the photos to be burned to disk and export to a folder on the Desktop File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu. Set the Kind = what you want, the original file or the current, edited version.
2 - insert a blank DVD in the optical drive.
3 - drag the folder of photos onto the DVD disk's icon.
3 - drag the DVD disk icon to the Trash Bin in the Dock which turns into the Burn function:
For a video DVD disk:
Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar. For iPhoto 9.5 and later selct 480p.
