400 RAM instead of 333 ina 1,25 iMac

I tried to buy new DDR 2700 333 RAM to upgrade my 1,25 iMac, but I can only find SO-DIMM modules, no stock of the desktop ones.
In every shop i ask for I've been told I can use 400 DDR RAM instead of 333 with no problem, but some sellers tell me I can't use 333 and 400 modules at the same time and others tell me I can use them together.
I would like to replace only the factory accessible module and keep the 512 SO-DIMM I have in the user one.
I'll apreciate your help.
Thank you in advance, and excuse my poor english.

Hello,
It would probably be okay but 333MHz shouldn't be too hard to find:

Crucial PC2700 333MHz 184pin DIMM.

I have a K7N2G 6570. I am running an AGP graphics card. I have 400 FSB ram. Can I run the XP 3000 + with the 400 FSB?
I read similar posts but none really answer if this is a runnable scenario. They only reference that the official spec is 333 with the built in graphics.
    Help is appreciated!

I am planning to buy the new MacPro. I mainly do after effects and cinema 4d. I am confsued wheather to buy a 6 core or an 8 core CPU. Is it worth spending additional $1500 for 8 core?
On the other note, in regrards to the future upgrades currently i am planning to put 2x16 GB rams instead of 4x8 GB rams. So that i can put another 2 more 16 GBs in future. Will this affect the performance of the mac rpo? Can anyone help me on this please.

  • Mixing ram SIZES in Late 2013 i7 27" iMac

Just assume all ram sticks are the same specs.......
    Can I mix ram SIZES in Late 2013 i7 27" iMac? I.E. : two - 4 GB and two - 8 GB?

You should try to balance RAM out as equally as possible between available slots.
    For example, 2 4 4 4,  2 2 4 4,  2 2 2 4,  but not 2,4,8,0.   And where you only have two slots, 2 2,  2 4,  4 4,  and so on.

As the others have said, this is a really chancey thing to do...there have been several users on here during the past few weeks with questions about using out-of-spec ram...most had trouble with it.  Macs will sometimes accept higher spec memory, sometimes they will not.  Corsair has been getting some very good comments lately but that is from those using in-spec memory.
Best solution is the correct memory.  And as noonday recommended, Crucial and OWC are very good and stock the correct ram.

  • Is RAM & Hard Drive expandable in the 2013 iMac?

Just curious if the RAM and hard drives in the 2013 iMac's are expandable?

Ad den.thed pointed out RAM can be added by the User in 2013 iMacs.  Two trusted sources of RAM modules are crucial.com and otherworldcomputing.com.  Both will be considerable less expensive than Apple modules and easy to install.
As for storage space one can always get an external HD to use.  otherworldcomputing.com is an excellent source for them also.

  • DDR Ram 400 runs only on 333

    Hi,
i saw some guys reporting that problem but couldn't find any solution.
I have 2 Corsair 400 mhz moduls running in dual mode but if i check frequenzy settings i'm able to see that my mainboard says dram clock:333 mhz.
    Nothing what i try helps.
If i only put in a single ram the dram clock shows 400 mhz :/
    Some suggestions?
    Config:
    Piv 2,8 c (800mhz)

    Same here....
I must say that I'm really dissapointed in the 875P mainboard by MSI....
Producers like Corsair and Kingston develope memory modules that should work within the stated specs @2.5V.
And I do believe that it works.... but thanks to the MSI 875P mobo (and the 865 mobo's) you must raise the voltage to 2.7V or even 2.8V, even if you don't wish to OC. I paid €170,- per module and I've lost my warrenty by now.
The sentence it the mainboard manual did really made me roll over the floor...
"It is not recommended to run your memory at a higher voltage than 2.5V for a long period, because it could damage your memory". First of all, a 875P chipset has got PAT for standard, except on the MSI board, because you need to activate it by a Performance Mode. Then if you set a performance mode higher then slow, you must raise the DDR-Voltage in order to let it work. So basiclly you need to OC your system, loose your warrenty in order to let it work at the standard speeds.....
In the meanwhile MSI is producing bad and buggy bios versions (v1.8 anyone ). But they are the fastest one in TomsHardware Reviews so why bother.....
Sorry for going off-topic, but I'm sick and tired of this kind of marketing and additude......

According to http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB82022E0000R01.htm I could expect WinXP (32-bit) to present at least 3.0G up to 3.3G. But I only see 2.89. Is that configurable? How could I enable memory remapping - I do not see anything in BIOS?

The article you posted is talking about the maximum amount of RAM your would see available in Windows.  However, your graphics card uses 'dynamically allocated' RAM. This means that your graphics card has no RAM of its own, but instead uses your system's RAM dynamically as needed. So, this is using up some further RAM.
You could check this thread and the suggestions there:

  • KT4AV and 1Go DDR 400 RAM...

Hi all ! Sorry for my bad english, i'm french.
I have a problemwith RAM. I've just bought 1 Go RAM DDR 400.
On my KT4AV user's guide, it is said that this motherboard can support up to 3 Go RAM, but just one DDR 400.
This morning, i try to add this 1 Go RAm to my 3rd slot (the 2 others have each 256 Mo RAM). Everything seemed to work good: windows boot up fine, my system only show 1.256 GO RAM...I tried to launch a game anyway: my system rebooted!
I tried to just let the 1 Go RAM: my system boot, but when i try to launch a game (Red Orchestra or Max Payne 2 or Silent Hunter 3 or European Air War), my system freeze, i can't even use ctrl+alt+suppr...all i can do is reset!
    Do you have any advices?
    My system is:
    AMD Athlon 2600 + 1.92 Ghz
    GeForce 7600 GS AGP 8x 512 RAM
    Windows XP Pro
Fortron Epsilon 600 watts for my power supply.
512 DDR 400 (for now....one thing is funny: the user's guide tells that only one DDR 400 can be supported, but i've 256 DDR 400 on my slots and everything is good!!!)

Freezing mostly is from an overheating processor. Could you say temps, please.
Processor and memory runs best at equal speeds.
... What if you made your left leg move faster than the right one, how would your "system" move along.

  • PC3200 - DDR 400 RAM in a G4

Effectively I'm just looking for confirmation here.
I've been having trouble with my computer at work which seems to be from the RAM in my best guess. Whenever I run any program to test RAM (Apple Hardware Test and memtest) it doesn't find all the RAM installed (1 Gig) and is always missing around 256 MB or more. Hence why I believe it's the RAM.
So I looked into the hardware specs in the AHT and found I have one 256 PC2700 stick of RAM. The other two sticks are both PC3200. I did not upgrade the computer but came to it with this configuration. From what I've found on the Apple site and in the manual the G4 Mirror Drive Door isn't compatible with PC3200 RAM. Instead it just mentions PC2700 RAM.
So, is this the problem or am I being mislead and the computer can actually use PC3200 RAM? I know some MoBo's out there can run both PC2700 and PC3200, but I'm not sure if this is the case with the G4 I'm working on.
    Any feedback would be appreciated.

I was under the impression you bought this used, and for personal use.
There are a number of ways to see who or where memory is being eaten up. top in Terminal; Activity Monitor makes it easy.
    Wired: 95MB
    Active: 132MB
    Inactive: 486MB
    Used: 720MB
    Free: 1GB
    VM Size: 5GB
    using the most:
    Graphicconverter
    snort
    kernel_task
    Firefox
    WindowServer
    VueScan
And usually OmniWeb 5.x which can use 200-500MB.
OS X uses memory to cache windows, programs, disk I/O, anything and everything it can. more so in Tiger than Panther, and a good use - why let memory sit around drinking tea and doing nothing?
Which is also why some people began to have "issues" with RAM in Tiger that they didn't in 10.3.9.
And I think 10.4.7 looks to be 'better behaved' in how much RAM is used by kernel etc. but could be imagination.
Some programs (like snort in my case) can really eat up a bit (byte?) of memory surprisingly. Norton should not be installed in most systems, and not if using Adobe or graphics. Spotlight use to also eat up cpu and memory when it was updating its indexes.
It does sound like a memory slot or chip or something is 'amiss' but what?
These MDD systems don't have any 'order' to where RAM goes, and the slots, from video slot out, are J21-J22-J23-J20. And you don't need to fill in order or have something in J20 at all, so you can try chaning order. But see if there is a 'mystery process' first which seems more logical.
Open Firmware can be used to physically disable RAM. Someone could do that for testing and developing, or when Classic or some program didn't work if there was 1GB or more. It is always possible that someone put a "bad" ram chip in (the 256MB?) or something and disabled the phyical memory in Open Firmware, but in that case, I would expect (but not sure) that Apple System Profiler would only "see" 768MB.
memtest - usually 80MB for kernel or system, you got 762.
    762 + 80 = 842MB.
    1024 - 842 = 182MB
At first, I thought it was going to be "1GB ≠ 1000 but 1024. People format a 400GB drive and it comes out to 392GB. Then ask them to avoid filling the drive beyond 85% or less, leaving 15-20% full to deal with a limitation in HFS+ directory handling highly fragmented file segments to fit in the directory, and you have just about 305-320GB of "user space" on that huge drive.
The only way I know (need to look for how to "undo" setting the physical memory in Open Firmware) would be to boot into OF and use
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
Or maybe physically remove a stick, boot, then shutdown, add back in and reboot. something.
Odd. I'll look back and see if you get this figured out.

  • 667 Ram Still Runnning @ 333 in N100 - 0768 49G

I just bought a 2GB 667 ram module but my ram is still running at 333mhz. i have removed the previous default ram 512MB 333 mhz...
In bios i cannot find ne overclocking option and even ram option where i can change or set freq myself..... i have checked intel site it said i945GM ie my mobo supports 667 ram and it also runs @ 667mhz...
Do i need to do bios update????
    or does n100 0768 49G model runs only @ 333MHZ and cannot run ram @ 667mhz
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Sir,
IMHO, the FSB depends upon the processor on the machine.
It seems that the RAM you have is capable of 667 MHz operation, that the Mobo is capable of 667 MHz operation but the processor only asks for 333 MHz operation.
If you replace with a proc asking for 667 MHz your system will run at this frequency.
You can check this by looking at Intel's site for specification of your exact processor.
Bear also in mind that the frequency of the processor may be slowed down by power saving measures when running on batery to conserve batery life.
    Hope this helps

  • Is it possible to persuade software to use RAM instead of hard drive?

I have 16GB in my iMac and also in my MacBook Pro, the only times I see it really being used is when I run virtual machines that forcibly grab 2GB or whatever, that I have told them to grab.  Most programs tend to run with just their own code in memory, the video files or image files seems to be streamed from the hard drive, even when I have easily enough RAM for it all to fit uncompressed.
I appreciate this may be down to the way those programs have been coded, I have checked preferences in one of them and found nothing about how to handle the data or memory.  Perhaps a good old-fashioned RAM Disk could be used?  Is there such a feature in Lion or Mountain Lion, or a 3rd party application to do this?  I just would like to speed up video editing and photo editing tasks, which appear to always make use of the hard drive.  Surely these tasks would run faster in RAM.

Video and photo editing apps tend to swap around and build up files between the applications and the hard drive.
And, yes, this the way it is supposed to work! There is nooo way to circumvent this.
Photo editing aps, like Photoshop for example, created a working file that is three to four times larger than the original image and can get appreciably larger than this as you do complex work on an image.
The same is true with video content. With video, you are working with large files and clips and using complex editing and effects on video. The size of these types of files can grow appreciably, also.
These sort of apps are very CPU, GPU, RAM and hard drive intensive applications.
It maybe that you do not have suffucient internal hard drive space left for working on these type of files in these applications.
How much internal hd space do you have remaining on your iMac's internal drive?
You may have to looking into using a much larger external FireWire 809 drive for doing your video and photo editing work.
Also,,if your video work is that intense, if you have a 2010 or newer iMac, you can install up to 32 GBs of RAM.
The 16 GBs of RAM you have now may not be enough to handle the complexity of the video projects you are working on.
It's probably fine for photo editing, though.
Another option, if your iMac is out of warranty, is to bit the bullet and have installed by Apple certified center, the largest Solid State Drive (SSD) you can afford to add an additonal faster boot drive to your iMac.
These SSD's don't come in really large storage sizes, yet, (you would still need to supplement storage with an external larger drive), but since SSDs contain no moving parts, the system and applications would run much snappier.

  • Windows 7 only booting with 2GB of ram instead of 8.

I used Bootcamp (newest version) to install Windows 7 Ultimate on my partitioned hard drive on my Mac Mini. The computer has 8GB of RAM, but when I open the Task Manager in Windows, I can only see that 2BG of RAM is being used. How can I get it so that I can use all 8GB of RAM on Windows 7? Is there any possibility that I could do it without having to reinstall Windows?
I can see that the task manager sees that 8GB are installed, but it also says that there is 2GB total. The OS is only being run with the 2GB and not the 8 that are being detected.
All I would like to know is how I can get Windows 7 to use all 8GB of RAM. I did install the x86 version.
    Thannk you.

I just checked an I am only running the 32 bit. This is clearly the issue. Alright. This will probably solve it. Thanks.
