Good detective work. This is why, for quite some time now, I DON'T have iTunes check (or install) updates. However, that only works if you don't have the NEW Nano (and I prefer the 3rg gen version, so that's why I haven't had to upgrade).

You should have an iOS4 firmware available in your computer. If you want to upgrade, simply hold the Shift button + click the upgrade button so you can choose what firmware you want your iPod to be upgraded. Choose the iOS4 firmware and that's it.

An iPod can pn;y sync wiht one iTunes kibrary and the new computer is a new iTunes library:
    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party probgram like one of those dicussed here:
Copy music from Ipod to new computer...: Apple Support Communities
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup

  • Is it possible to charge a 3rd generation i-pod using a PC?

I've tried doing this but can't seem to work it out, is there something you have to do like connect it through fire wire, or is it simply not possible with 3rd gen i-pods?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Yes, but you must install a firewire port (cost about 20-25 bucks). You can transfer music back & forth using USB, but USB won't charge your pod, it doesn't carry the precious juice.

  • I pod classic wont play in stereo

Cds transferred to itunes then onto ipod classic wont play in stereo via headphones

Do songs play in stereo in your iTunes? If not, are you importing the songs in mono? (Check Edit/Preferences/General/Import Settings - there are two settings boxes, Import Using and Setting. If the Setting is "custom" look in there and make sure Channels is set to "Auto" or "Stereo".)
Have you tried the headphones in another player? What happens if you do?
Is there a stereo/mono switch on your headphones?
Are the songs in mono on the CD?
Is the headphone plug pushed fully into the jack?
When you say mono, do you mean sound from only one speaker or do you mean "exactly the same sound from each speaker" so that there is no left/right sound?

  • 3rd Generation I pod malfunctioned after restoring & updating with iTunes 7

After Updating to iTunes 7, itunes asked me to update my 3rd generation ipod's software. in order to do this i had 2 restore my ipod and so deleting everything on it. after having to re-install and re-configure my ipod in order to access it through iTunes it is now impossible to transer my songs back onto it. auto-syncing causes iTunes to freeze and then wipe my ipod. i attempted adding files slowly, just a few at a time but even this causes iTunes to crash eventually and so wipe my ipod again. im not sure whether the updating or my ipod is to blame for this problem. Any one else having similar difficulties or any advice?

    Hello everyone -
Please read the info in this post, which is extremely helpful if you (like me) need to revert back to iTunes 6.0.5. Your problem sounds quite similar to mine - I went back to what worked before. This will put you back to where you before this disaster called iTunes 7 happened:

  • My iPod nano (3rd generation) shut off and wont turn back on?

I was putting new music on my Ipod, and one day after working perfectly fine, i got to a song my friend got for me. After lintening to it for about thirty seconds, my ipod shut off. I tried holding down the home button, but nothing hapened.  I also tried charging it. The computer will not recognize it either. Is there something i can do to make it work, or do i have to bringit in to an apple store?

What have you tried so far in terms of troubleshooting?  If nothing else, work through each of the 5 R's of troubleshooting for your iPod to rule out the possibility of any sort of software error/glitch or data corruption.

Otherwise, you have a hardware issue, meaning you'll need to either take or send your iPod in for service/replacement either via Apple or a third party service.

  • I pod classic not being read by itunes

just bought it, have windows xp service pack 2 2002 if that helps, looked through all the trouble shooting, not working. basically when i get to the register page in itunes and when i go though all the formalities ipod ejects the sync, will not sync songs in itunes

Yes everyone is having the same problem as you.
All your other USB ports will work, except your iPod will eject straight away, or in some cases, eject during the syncing of files.
    Apple's solution? There is none.
    Good luck.
I somehow managed to sync it once, but have tried to update my library and it won't work. It can't just be my USB because other people are having the same problem - It's Apples ****** software on its iPod. My USB's work fine with everything else.
Good luck trying to fix this.

  • Battery from 4th generation ipod to 3rd generation

Hello all, i have a 4th generation 20gb ipod that is bust. I also have a 40gb 3rd generation ipod that has a rubbish battery. Can i take the battery from my 4th generation 20gb and put it in my 3rd generation 40gb? not sure if there are interchangeable or not. Any answers, pointers to websites etc very much appreciated!
    Thank you

    Thanks, Zevoneer.
If I correctly understand your response, I can safely use the Apple power adapter that came with my 4th Gen. click-wheel iPod to connect to and charge my new 5th Gen. iPod.
I tried connecting the new iPod to my computer with the Firewire cable tht came with the 4th Gen. iPod, but got an alert advising that the 5th Gen. would connect to the Mac ONLY with a USB cable.

  • 3rd generation not syncing

I just got a 3rd generation iPod, and it's not syncing with my computer. The usb I'm using is from my old 4th generation iPod. The iPod is fully charged, and makes a whirring sound when I plug it in, but it's not showing up on the computer as plugged in.
    dell inspiron 6400   Windows XP

That's the problem. 3rd generation iPods used a different type of connection developed by Apple called Firewire. Data transfer speeds between USB2 and Firewire were similiar but Firewire is a more reliable connection than USB2 and it was easier to diagnose than USB2. Come 5th generation iPods, Apple dropped Firewire in favor of USB2. 4th generation iPods can use Firewire, too. To answer your question, you need to get a PCI firewire card for your computer in order to use the 3rd gen iPod. The Adaptec 4300 is the recommended card for the iPod.
