40GB IPod Click Wheel Freezes iTunes When Connected - Please Help?!

I have only had my ipod 3 months and it was given to me as a present so the ipod thing is quite new to me.
Recently my ipod froze and after reseting as per instructions it showed a folder icon and apple support.com.
I turned the ipod back on after that to find all my music files gone, i tried connecting my ipod back to my lap top to download the music again but iTunes just freezes.
I have also placed my ipod in disk mode to completley restore it but i cannot do this if iTunes wont recoginze its there.
I am completely lost and gutted that after only 3 months i have lost faith in the ipod already and just listen to my music through my lap top at home now.
I left all my cd's back in england before i came to oz and have nothing to listen to in the car now.
Can anyone please help?
Thanks in advance

I guess nobody else has had this problem?
Does anybody know if you can e-mail apple direct to express how useless their services are or even to try to get an explanation from them of how to correct the problem before i throw their ipod in the bin?

  • How do I transfer the music content on my old IPOD (click wheel) to Itunes in my new computer for subsequent transfer to a new IPOD

How do I transfer music on my old IPOD( click wheel) to Itunes on my new computer(Windows 8) for further transfer to a new IPOD nano

If you purchased all of the songs through itunes store, please follow these steps:
    1. Open up Itunes and Click on Itunes Store
    2. Once you're in the Itunes Store look to right side of the screen and you should see the word "purchased". Click purchased and you'll be sent to a purchase screen.
    3. Click on "All Songs" and then it will show all the songs you've downloaded. From there you just hit the button that looks like a cloud with an arrow on it, and it will download all the songs all over again.
If you didn't purchase them through Itunes, then you'll have to download software that will strip the songs from your iPod onto your computer. And here is a guide about how to transfer iPod music. Hope it helps. Feel free to email me if you need further help.

    Help ASAP needed

Try restoring the iPod via iTunes. First from backup and if problem persists, restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. If your iPod is with in the one-year warrranty, not abused and defective Apple will replace it.

  • IPod freezes iTunes when connected to computer

Whenever I connect my iPod to my Dell laptop iTunes freezes. When this happens, iTunes does not crash, it only freezes. During this time, iTunes will finish the song that it is playing (if doing so), but after the song finishes no further media will play. Also, the iPod does not show up on the sidebar of iTunes at this time (iTunes appears exactly as it was before connecting the iPod).
I am unable to eject the iPod safely at this point as the computer tells me that the system is using the iPod. If I remove the iPod from the computer, the error message: "Unable to sync iPod" comes up in iTunes. At the same time the iPod shows up on the sidebar of the iTunes, but it disappears as soon as I click "Ok" on the error message. At this point, iTunes returns to normal and is no longer frozen, even without restarting.
I have tried using a different computer and the same thing happens. I have also tried a different cable and the same exact thing happens.
Most recently, I have tried putting the iPod into disk mode, but still the same thing happens when I connect it to the computer.
If I go into My Computer (the same thing occurs in or out of disk mode) and click on the iPod, it will take me to the iPod folder, but My Computer will begin to Not Respond and then the only way to close it is to force close the window (ctrl, alt, del). If I right click the iPod, the drop down menu to access properties or to format the iPod comes up, but once again My Computer begins to not respond and I must force close it.
My iPod is an iPod Classic, 120 GB.
My computer is a Dell Laptop, Studio 1558
I have also tried on a Dell Desktop

OK, lets check out the iPod's hard drive...
*Check your iPod with Diagnostics Mode*
It's possible that your iPod's hard drive has started to fail. Take your iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots. Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds. Your iPod should now switch into Diagnostic Boot mode. Press MENU for *Manual Test*, then select *IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* to reveal your stats. For comparison here are mine for my 2 year old 6th Generation Classic:
    Retracts: 889
    Reallocs: 12
    Pending Sectors: 0
    PowerOn Hours: 2202
    Start/Stops: 894
    Temp: Current 24c
    Temp: Min 10c
    Temp: Max 50c
Take a note of your results. When finished press *SELECT & MENU* for 6 seconds to reset the iPod again.
With modern disc drives sectors are no longer marked bad by a disc scan, if the SMART firmware detects a sector it has trouble accessing it will attempt to invisibly reallocate it to a spare area of the disc.
Note that I've only 12 remapped sectors and none pending. To help explain what the numbers mean here is an extract from the Wikipedia S.M.A.R.T. article:
    *Reallocated Sectors Count*
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.
    *Pending sector count*
Number of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors). If an unstable sector is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later); instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
Large numbers of Reallocs or Pending Sectors would suggest your drive is failing and that you may need to repair or replace your iPod. Check your stats after another attempt to update your iPod. If the numbers increase that again points to hard drive failure. While it won't be good news at least you'll know it isn't some random software problem and you can decide what to do next.

  • IPod seems to freeze iTunes when I connect it! D:

I decided to restore my iPod using iTunes, so I did. When I went to go and then put the saved backup back onto my iPod iTunes froze. It then came up with a Windows message saying that 'iTunes has stopped working' and that Windows was 'checking for a solution to the problem'. The Windows message then changed to saying again that ' iTunes had stopped working' and the only options on that window was to press the x button which closed the message and iTunes or 'close the program' buttom which did the same thing. I tried this again and again and each time it did the same thing. When I would plug the iPod into iTunes, the icon of an iPod would appear in the top left hand corner like normal but it was a faded icon, after a short delay, that was when iTunes froze and the messages came up etc. I then decide to try and connect my brothers iPod but doing that didn't seem to cause iTunes to freeze etc. and I could use the facilities for that iPod as normal. I can't honestly think of what has caused this and Apple support, either in store, online and by telephone has been absolutely useless, so I thought I'd ask on here. Please help and give me some advice on what to do to resolve this issue as I currently can't use the ipod. Even if I was to set it up as a new iPod I won't be able to sync it to my iTunes as it will freeze and force quit as soon as I connect it.
    Thank you!

    Have you tried:

  • Click-wheel acting weird when connected to speakers.

    Hi, folks.
Yesterday I connected my iPod mini to PC speakers and the click-wheel got crazy. When I tried to select anything on screen, the cursor would go up and down dispite of my finger direction.
Is that a problem with my iPod or is there any kind of restriction regarding iPod and PC speakers?
I don't think it's anything on the click-wheel once it works perfectly when not connected to the speakers.
    Cheers.
    JP

The same thing happens when an active mobile phone (cellphone) is placed near the clickwheel. Because the clickwheel relies on reading elecric charge at a given point, it can be disrupted by electromagnetic fields. Try moving it away from your speakers and see if that helps.

  • Ipod shuffle randomly freezes....please help!!!!

My Ipod shuffle seems to randomly freeze after certain songs, or spots on the shuffle. I dont recall exactly when this first started, but it seems like ive tried everything. I have tried scandisk, defrag, resetting the ipod, updating it to latest firmware, and still nothing. The problem occurs whether or not I am in shuffle mode, or straight play. I would appreciate any help what so ever. I am at my wits end. I dont understand it at all. Scandisk detected no errors. Should I attempt to format it? Please help!!!!

    Hello, Chris.
If the problem is corrupt files, there are a couple of things you can try.
Remove the songs from the shuffle's playlist, then refill the shuffle - but don't let the offending song(s) reload; we're trying to overwrite the memory. Then you can let these songs back on. If the problem continues:
If the songs weren't purchased from iTMS, try re-reripping/re-encoding them. Then reload them.
(These steps have worked with all but one song for me. I've never figured out why, probably just coincidence, but I have one song that would only play a couple of times before this started happening again. It's off the shuffle's playlist for good.)
If the songs were purchased from iTMS (and in another post I think you'd indicated they were) you can try to get them replaced or you can go the route of making an audio CD from them and reimporting the songs.
(I've never tried this, and one poster in this forum has indicated it will cause an unacceptable loss of quality.)
    Good luck

  • 3rd Gen 40GB iPod click-wheel is seen by windows, but not Mac

I just dusted off my old iPod after nearly a year of no use and coulfn't get it to be seen on my MacBook Air with iTunes 7.7. I tried it on my homebuilt PC running Win XP with iTunes 7.7 and it mounted just fine. I did a software update on it, plugged it in overnight to give it a full charge, then tried it on the Mac again. Still no dice. No crash or hang, just as if it didn't exist. But it (the Mac & iTunes)see my wife's and my iPhone just fine. I double-checked and it still shows up and works normally on the PC. I don't want to do a reset if I can avoid, as I have some music on the iPod that isn't on the Mac. It is on the PC, but, it's a hassle to get it across.

I have a similar problem. I have not used my iPod in a few years. I recently bought a mac. The iPod syncs fine on the windows, but is completely unrecognized by my MacBook Air. I had to buy a USB connector because my iPod had only a firewire cable. Perhaps that's the issue? Disk Utility doe not recognize it. ITunes does not recognize it. In disk mode the screen still reads "OK to disconnect" after I plug it in. Any ideas? (I followed the Rs on the Windows where it's working fine...)
I am abandoning my PC altogether and I am becoming addicted to podcasts. Getting this to work with my MacBook Air would satisfy my new addiction.
    Thanks,
    T

  • Can't connect iPod nano since latest iTunes update. Please help :(

Ever since I downloaded the latest versions of iTunes, my 5th gen iPod nano won't connect. I get a pop-up that says, "Could not install hardware" or something to that affect. I switched cables and usb ports, and no change. What should I do?
I was thinking I want to go back to a previous iTunes version, but I have no idea if you can uninstall a version. I've only ever seen tips on uninstalling the whole thing and reinstalling the same one.
The best "solution" I've gotten was to buy a new iPod, that I was out of luck and the new iTunes versions obviously don't support older iPods, but I don't think that's right. If it is, Apple has lost a customer forever.
If anyone has any tips, I would really appreciate your help.

About one out of every 5 times now my Iphone will sync, the other times it will give one of several errors(see thread above) or it will just stay on the syncing deal forever.
I have not put ANY third party apps on or done anything. Hey Apple, instead of continually putting out updates to turn peoples unlocked phones into bricks, how about addresses some of these syncing issues??
    thanks!!

  • When I click on "App Store", the loader gets stuck on "Contacting iTunes Store..." I can click on the "iPod Click Wheel Games" and it works, but NOTHING else.

I can click on the "iPod Click Wheel Games" and it works, but NOTHING else. Any suggestions?

I was having this problem. The settings on my wireless router was set to hide my IP address so it wouldn't connect. When I changed that, I connected no problem. While this is annoying since I don't want my IP address to be out there, I just switch my router when I need to connect to the App/iTunes Store. Hope this helps. It worked for me.
