40rv52u won't start, loud static, solid green light, no backlight

Hey everyone,
So, it appears that we had a brownout yesterday, and it also appears that the brownout has jacked up my trusty Toshiba 40rv52u (2008, 40 inch LCD).
Upon plugging in the device to power, it immediately attempts to turn on, at which point the green power light comes on, but no backlight, no fan sound, no humming, no picture, no nothing. Just a cheeky little green light that claims everything is fine.
When left alone, after about 5-10 seconds of being "on," the television begins emitting this horrible, intermittent, 90's modem-style-SCREECHING static at near maximum volume through the internal speakers.
The TV will respond to both the Power Switch on the unit itself, as well as via the Toshiba Remote Control. The same effects are present regardless of which power on method chosen.
Toshiba Phone Support had me power off the television for a short while (I've already left it unplugged overnight, pressing POWER periodically to drain the capacitors), and attempt to clear any remaining power by holding the POWER BUTTON for 20s. To no avail. He also had me try doing a few things with the Remote, which also didn't work.
I'm wondering if this is a common side-effect of serious damage. My TV has actually done this little gig once before, at which point I unplugged everything, left it off for 30m, and attempted to restart and it came back just fine like normal.
I don't have any other issues with the television, and when it isn't doing this it actually appears to work just fine, have no problems switching resolutions (used as computer monitor via HDMI), changing settings, switching channels, navigating the menus. Even the onboard speakers work fine, although they don't get used.
Is there a secret factory reset function somewhere? Has my Television really just been destroyed, even through a surge protector? Does the loud static interference sound point to anything specific? I saw some others on a different forum referring to loud static sounds potentially indicating a bad "SMPS" (Switching Mode Power Supply).
The Toshiba rep pointed me in the direction of a local servicer, but the problem is that it's hardly worth it to spend $150USD-$250USD on repairing a Television that I purchased for near $300ish in the first place. . .3 years ago. . .or more. . .
Anyway, thanks for help, hopefully somebody else has encountered this before, maybe with some better results than I have so far. Thanks!

Honestly, leaving it unplugged from power is the closest to thing a secret factory reset. As far as I'm aware, it soudns like it requires servicing. Maybe someone else in the community will have a different idea.

  • IMac Summer 2000 G3 won't start up. No green light!

Our beloved old iMac (listed below) has simply died on us. The green power light won't light up and we get no sound when it's pressed, nothing. At first it blinked then shut down and now won't blink anymore. All I get is a blank screen as if no power was booting up. A power cable check and replacement didn't help.
Recent history: We frequently got problems with the date and time. I had always isolated that issue as a weak PRAM battery. We got an error message that the date was wrong i.e., Jan 1 1971. An attempt to correct it didn't help. The error message said that the PMU needed to be updated. We downloaded some Apple software but it turned out it was for 0S 9. Yesterday we had some issues such as the iMac wouldn't shut down and woud suddenly go to sleep instead. Then today it just wouldn't start up, period.
My suspicion is it's either the power supply or the PRAM battery. But the battery is only 2 years old and normally their life span is longer than that. I have an old Mac IIVX with a PRAM battery I can dig out of it. This is my first workaround.
I know others here have recently posted similar problems and this may sound redundant, but I'm doing the workaround and will post the results. If anyone can conjecture on this battery issue or if that fails and you think it's the power supply then please let know where I can get a new one. Otherwise I'm going to try to find one on Ebay.
    Thanks

    James,
Thanks for the update. Was the quote from an apple authorized dealer? <--
I was quoting in euroes which is higher than dollars. I'm not sure what the euro to dollar rate is now but the dollar is pretty weak. I live in Europe, shoulda mentioned that. The weak dollar keeps all Apple products relatively low and has for the past decade or so. And yes it was a local authorized Apple dealer, not a box store. I've looked at them and their prices are a bit higher and you don't get the reliable warranty service. They've got the Apple trademark selling area but walk a few yards and you can get a Dell. I think Apple rents them the space, but most people I know buy at authorized Apple dealers where you can customize your order and have good service on warranty. I don't have an official Apple Store here, I wish I did but sofar there aren't any in continental Europe I know of. Maybe one in London.
For the iMac G5 17in 1.83 MHz with 512MB RAM 160GB HD and no Superdrive the asking retail price is around 979 euroes. The 2MHz Core Duo with 1GB RAM, Superdrive and two FireWire 800 ports goes for around 1,117 euroes. The 20in starts around 1,300 euroes.
Also have you thought of replacing the board yourself? <--
My wife just shrugged and decided to break down and shop for a new one. It's too much bother to do a DIY repair that big. We figured we could salvage some of it for its parts and resell them on eBay. I stole some RAM and the fresh PRAM battery out of it for my G4. The HD will be removed and wiped. Maybe resold. I've seen a G3 motherboard on eBay but you don't know what you're getting. I stop at buying used RAM and power supply units.
Post a new post for instructions and parts locators if interested. <--
eBay USA has a full range of Mac parts. I saw a G3/G4 power supply unit that was going unsold for $12 today. Could use that to fix up the Blue and White but the shipping to Europe is $35 and I can buy one here on eBay for 45 euroes plus shipping.
    Thanks,
    Rob

  • Solid Green light at start up. Airport utility can't find base station.

    Help!
I've got a problem with my Airport Extreme base station. It's not so extreme. When I hook it up, I get a solid green light and it can not be found by the airport utility in order to set up. I've tried resetting it, power on and off. Nothing. Any suggestions on how to start over or get this thing working?
    Thanks,

David_957, Welcome to the discussion area!
Try temporarily connecting your Mac to the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) via Ethernet. After you get it configured you can disconnect the Mac's Ethernet connection to the AEBS.

  • Have connection to base station, solid green light but no internet ??

    Hello,
At my wits end. I have a a brand new Airport Express, a brand new Dell laptop running Vista Home Premium and an older model Westell Wirespeed DSL modem. Although I have a solid green light on the Airport base station, and have no problem communicating and printing wirelessly, I cannot connect to the internet. All indications from the Airport Utility show a normal connection with a signal strength of 'very good' to 'excellent'. I configured Airport to DHCP, which is what my ISP (Verizon) provides. Sometimes upon startup, my computer first tries to connect to an 'unknown network' and I have to manually switch to the Airport network I created. I've been through this at least half a dozen times, resetting the modem, the base station and re-setting up the network but no luck getting on the internet so far. What am I missing here? Thank you!

If anyone happens to stumble on this, I solved the issue on my own. The TC/IPv4 protocol on the PC's wireless network properties was set to a static IP address. Once I reset it to dynamic, it worked fine.

  • Solid green light with blink every 5 seconds

I use this shuffle on my windows xp pc. When it was time to charge the (first gen) shuffle, I connected it to powered USB, as usual. After plugging it in I got a solid green light with a blink every 5 seconds. I then tried plugging it into the wall adapter charger with the same outcome. I left it overnight to charge and upon checking the battery, it's still red/orange.
Does anyone have an idea what could be the problem?
    Thanks

Does this mean I have to buy a new one, or is the
battery replacable? I haven't even owned it for a
    full year.
Take it to an Apple Store... they'll replace it.

  • My .5tb Time Capsule's orange light is flashing. The internet and everything utelse is working fine, and I'm all backed up, so howcome it doesn't show the solid green light? What should I do?

The orange light has been flashing for a couple days, and even if I unplug everything (Time Capsule & modem) and plug it all in again, still the flashing orange light. I'm sure it should be solid green. The internet connection seems to be working fine, so I'm wondering what's happening. What should I do?

I don't think Apple will want it.. you can sell it on ebay etc.. but it is not worth a lot.
Your TC needs a new power supply but it is now uneconomic to fix them. Apple do not supply any parts for their repair network.
If you want to repair it yourself you can ..

  • Won't boot - no display, solid white light.  Fans spin up and gets loud.

    Hi Everyone,
I have a Core Duo 20" that won't boot. The display won't light up, and the white light stays on the whole time. No chime. Fans start slow, but then gradually gets very loud after over the course of a few seconds.
I've began taking it apart. One suspect area is the DC/DC Inverter board. The POWER_GOOD line is only showing 0.16V. Most power supplies uses signaling between 3V and 5V so I'm suspecious of this 0.16V POWER_GOOD signal.
Can someone help chime in (no pun intended), or verify the POWER_GOOD signal voltage of an early 2006 iMac Core Duo (2105)?
    THANK YOU!
    Yue

By the way, I've done AppleOption+PR (from my LCII days!), and have removed the logic board battery, waited, reinserted and retired without success. Thanks!

  • T42 will not see 160gbSamsung hard drive in bios - solid green light no apparent activity

I bought a 160 gb Samsung HM160HC for my T42 to upgrade and do a clean install. When I power on the laptop the green hard drive light stays solid. No activity at all and I do not hear any activity from the drive. The bios is 3.23 which is last one for the t42 in 2007. It is also not recognized in the bios setup screen in the startup menu, but the original 40gb shows up fine when I put it back in with the windows XP pro on it and boots up.
I also get a media test failure code: pxe-e61 to check cable on boot agent base code (ba1217bc) screen during boot up and of course "operating system not found" since it can't see a hard drive. Even when I load windows for the install it cannot find a source drive to install to.
Any ideas what is wrong. thinking I got a bad drive I ordered another one and it does the same thing. I have tried them in both of my t42 laptops with the same problem. Hard to believe I got 2 lemons but it does happen. Any known problems trying to use this drive in the T42 that you might be aware of, it was recommended by some other users when I was researching for a drive to buy for the upgrade.
    Thanks,
    Al

It never hurts to go over the basics:
    a) Make sure that all the pins are straight and no jumpers present.
    b) Secure the drive face down in the caddy with all four screws.
    c) Gently but firmly push it in all the way, applying the pressure to the HD cover, and then secure the cover with the screw as well.
    Any progress?
Well, do I feel like a dummy. The original HD was secured with only 2 screws so I only put the 2 of them back in since it worked fine for it before, It slid in and seemed to make the connection, no bent pins or anything, no jumpers, etc. just no action either ..LOL, WRONG!!!!! I build computers as a hobby so I went to my assortment of screws and put 2 more to secure it at all corners. HELLO.. works like a charm. I was so frustrated I just couldn't see it or didn't think that 2 scews could be the problem since it work fine like that before. Lesson learned and I know better than to cut corners in computer assembly.
So thanks for pointing out the obvious that I couldn't see. BUT... another issue that you might be able to help with.
I upgraded the HD sine the other one was only 12 gb and I was maxed out and I had been having windows XP Pro freeze up for no apparent reason, sometimes while I was using it other times I would come back and it was just unresponsive and I would have to hard restart it by powering it off. Thjought it was the sleep mode or hibernate mode glitching at first, then thought the hard drive might be getting to full and glitching or had a bad sector or sectors causing the problem.
Well I decided to go with Win 7 since most of the other computers on our home network are win 7 just to be compatible. I don't need the Aero features so that is not an issue for me. Well it is still freezing up, happened while I was updating Win 7 for IE 9. JUST FROZE. no response. Had to power it off to get it to work, just like before. Any Ideas, could it be in the BIOS? It is the last update from IBM 3.23. I also could never get the pointer mouse to work before which would be noce, kept telling me it was turned off in the bios...mouse pad works fine just can't activate the pointer control from the control box but I could never find or figure out in the bios what was wrong. Not sure if the two problems  are related or not.
So you thinkd reflashing the bios would help? I went in and checked the connections tothe motherboard when I upgraded the ram, just o be sure they were not loose or not counnected securely. Everything seemed to be fine but no pointer activity either and still frezzing up.
Direction to go and what to start looking for. start with the basics again i guess. I have 2 t42's and the other one works fine no glitches and  the pointer works on it with no problem.

  • MacBook Pro won't turn on even with green light on charger

i have a 2010 MacBook Pro. The battery has been permanently dead for years but it still turned on as long as I had the charger connected. Eventually the charger stopped working so I bought a new one. The light is green on the charger but the MacBook won't turn on now. I tried that reset thing as well as opening up the bottom and disconnecting and reconnecting the battery and that didn't worn either. I pressed the button on the side and there's green flashing lights so its definitely getting power it just won't turn on. I don't know what else to do at this point.

I haven't started up my laptop for 2 days and this morning I went to tunr it on and it would not start up. • Desktop won't start and has no blue lights

My pavilion elite desktop has had a high pitch noise since I bought it. I read that the video card could cause that so I got a new video card but it made the same sound. I tracked the sound down to the psu. I returned the video card and got a new psu. The noise is got but the machine doesn't boot up now. All fans come on but no front panel lights no keyboard lights no monitor output. Tried putting the old psu back in. The noise was back but still no boot. I tried removing each piece of hardware till all I had was memory and hd left and still no lights. I swapped memory locations, sata cables, tried the card reader trick. Nothing seems to work. Could a blown led for the front panel cause it to not boot? That's the only connector I have left since I need it to power on.<br><br>Thanks for any ideas.
