  • Ipod no longer authorized (unknown error -42408)

posted this at itunes site as well.
out of blue, having problem i've never had syncing my 60G ipod.
for years have been syncing this ipod with my itunes on my macbook (only). for the past few times (?month or so), i'm getting an error message when i try to sync that first says, the ipod/macbook is not authorized for this ipod (which it always has been).
then it asks me if i want to authorize it. when i hit "authorize", it brings up an old itunes account i had and asks me for the old password, which i enter. then i get an error message that says:
"unknown error -42408. error in itunes store. please try again later."
how do i fix this so that i don't get this error message and can continue syncing with my most recent account, which has NEVER been a problem in the past?
    thanks.

I have exactly the same problem. My iPod is a 30GB one from 2005 or 2006 (I don't know how to identify its category). When it was new, I had a PC; then a year and a half ago I switched to a Mac and got everything transferred ok, and have been synching the iPod to the Mac with no trouble since then. (Well, slight trouble, because the iPod is now very full, and I haven't figured out the best way to synch "almost everything", but so far I'm managing somehow.) But just before leaving Moscow March 10, I wanted to synch and recharge the iPod, and got the same problem, with the same sequence of messages described at the start of this thread. So I only recharged it. Now I'm in Amherst, tried again, exact same problem. So now only recharging again.
Same computer, same iPod, why does it suddenly not recognize that this computer is authorized to synch this iPod, and why does it make this error when I tell it to authorize it? And how can I fix it?
    Grateful for any help.

  • How to fix "Error -42408" when I open up my library?

About a month ago I updated my iTunes to the newest update and ever since then everytime I click into the program the error message "-42408" appears. It hasn't bothered me because I have access to all of my music so I never paid much attention to it. I've tried googling it but I can't seem to find anything that could help me.
I just recently purchased a 4th gen iTouch for my boyfriend for Christmas and that's where my problem started. I bought it new off of Amazon and was planning on putting the music onto the device before I gave it to him that way he could use it immediately. Itunes lets me put some music onto the itouch which I can see on the computer, the music displayed on the screen is written in a faded color and the program will not let me click on it. Another issue is that when my laptop shows me that the music is all synced up onto the itouch I go to see if it is actually on the device which promptly tells me that there is no music currently stored on it. Now, I'm not sure if the two correlate or not but I was thinking that maybe this error message has something to do with the itouch not loading music.
I've had multiple ipods and itouch over the years on various computers and haven't really had any issues from what I can remember. I am extremely bad with technology and I'm hoping that I've missed something obvious that is easily fixable. (Don't we all?) I'm starting to become extremely frustrated and confused with the whole situation and have no idea what I should do or how I would go about fixing this.....please help!?! Thank you!

What is the exact wording of the erorr message and are you getting it when downloading the music from the iTunes Store or when you try to sync it over to the Nano?

  • I recently updated to latest iTunes and now my pc freezes.  I have a Tosiba 32bit running Windows Vista. Itunes will no longer connect to the store and I get error 42408 when opening ITunes. Please help!!

When I open iTunes I get the error message 42408.
I have googled and tried various solutions including
    - uninstalling, downloading and reinstalling. I have done that about 5 times.
    - sending the desktop icon to the rubbish bin and recreating a shortcut.
    - de-authorising the audible account. My computer goes thru the de- authorisation process and says that the account is deauthorised then when I go to re-authorise under Advanced all that is showing is to de-authorise the account. Weird.
    - contacted a tech guy locally and he has no clue. He's thinking it's probably a conflicting software problem. Obviously.
I have to uninstall the iTunes program just so I can use the internet as the new version slows/freezes everything and makes doing anything on my computer ridiculous.
Everything on my computer runs fine when Itunes is uninstalled. Great. not.
I would appreciate some further guidance as unfortunately iTunes seems to have complete control over my life. LOL! Basically if iTunes fails the rest follows... It's a dominoe effect...

    Update:
I contacted Apple Support and they agreed to waive the $40.00 tech support charge this one time which was very nice condsidering their update caused major problems with my computer. I realise I don't have to accept the updates but when they are released world wide to the public I do expect them to work relatively smoothly.
To cut a long story short after following the tech support advice and uninstalling and reinstalling itunes 10.5 for the seventh time and more than a week of going in circles and days spent away from my business trying to fix the problem - I gave up.  Because, as a non computer geek,  (no offense - I think cg's are amazing)  what I need is a functioning computer and phone to run my business that can be both relied on - all the time. That is what I paid for and expected when I bought Apples' very smart iPhone - I did not expect to be plagued by an update to a program that causes chaos for over 7 days. (And to be frank I've had problems with iTunes for the whole time I have been using it. From importing cd's to purchasing problems. gah!)
I may be one tiny person in a very large universe but I believe a certain standard can and should be expected when handing over hard earned cash to a company with a good reputation.
    I'm very disappointed with Apple.
Unfortunatley they have lost a customer...
This is how I fixed the problem:
Yesterday I bought a new smartphone - the Samsung Galaxy phone uses the Android Market and the Kies program. The phone is as good as if not better than the iPhone. The Kies program runs very smoothly on my computer. Downloading Apps is a breeze. My new phone is about the same size as the iPhone and a tad lighter.
    Problem solved!
As a side note - I will now save about $250.00 per year on my new prepaid phone plan with Boost compared to staying with my previous post-paid plan. I also get unlimited standard national calls in Australia plus unlimited texting too! Not bad for $40.00 a month.
While this solution worked for me it may not suit everybody.

  • TS3258 I get error message -42408 when trying to download itunes update 11.0.2 and thus can not upgrade to latest version.  What should I do?

I get error message -42408 when trying to download itunes update 11.0.2 and I therefore can not update to that latest version.  What can I do?

    Hey there davidgor2!
I have found an article that should help you resolve this issue with updating your iTunes. The article can be found here:
    iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3297
and the specific part of the article you will want to look at first is right here:
    "Error 42023" through "Error 42408"
These alerts might occur when trying to authorize iTunes or during launch when iTunes checks for authorization information.
Install the latest iTunes from apple.com/itunes/download/
    Remove the SC Info folder.
If that does not resolve the issue, see iTunes: "Error 42408" or "Error 42404" after upgrading to iTunes 9.0.3.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!
    Regards,

    Hello, Julie.
Thank you for the question.  As the device is registered to the Apple ID, you would simply need to make sure the name is correct on https://appleid.apple.com/.  If the name of the device itself is incorrect and you wish to change it, see the article below.

  • Itunes 10.6 - will not sync purchased apps - error -42408

I upgraded the IPAD to the new OS and upgraded Itunes on my windows business vista PC to 10.6 - the restore and sync of the IPAD fails telling me that my computer is not authorized to use the apps - I am unable to authorize it (recieve the -42408 error)  - i've seen references to an itunes 9 issue but the fixes listed there dont seem to work - any ideas?

Try taking a look at this Apple article -> iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting

I can no longer play my protected iTunes content, music or videos. When I try to authorise ( or de-authorise) I get the "Unknown error occurred -42408"
This would appear to be since upgrading to iTunes 9.0.3 this week.

  • When updating iTunes on my MAC, I get the error code (-42408)

When I try to open iTunes on my MAC it states I need to update. After updating, it closes and when I open again, I get the same updates. When I choose to not update, I get the error code (-42408). What can I do now?

What is your iTunes version? The error message indicates missing ressources or software conflicts.
Did you try to downgrade from iTunes version '11 to '10?

  • Authorized computer Error 42408

I have an Ipod Nano 2nd Gen everything has been working find until recently. iTunes said this computer was no longer authorized to play purchased items...It also has a very old email address listed that I no longer use. I login just fine and authorized the computer. I read on that if you de-authorize the computer restart and authorize again it should solve the problem but I should not have to to this everytime. I also went to the apple website and checked to make sure that my information was correct.
Today I received the same authorization and when I try to sign into itunes I receive this error: we could not complete your itunes store request -42408.
Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for your help.

I had a similar problem, so I emailed iTunes Store and asked them what they were going to do about me not being able to play the music they sold me on their software.
The following fix worked for me, sent by email from iTunes Store Support:
I'm sorry to hear that you have been experiencing difficulties with the iTunes application and are receiving error 42404. My name is Gerri, from your iTunes Store Customer Support Team. I know that you are looking forward to having this addressed as soon as possible and I'll be happy to assist you today.
To resolve this, I recommend uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes. Before beginning, please back up your iTunes library as explained here:
How to back up your media in iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1382
To uninstall iTunes, please follow the steps in this article:
Removing iTunes for Mac OS X
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224
After you've uninstalled iTunes and removed the related files, you will need to reinstall it. You can download the latest version free of charge from the iTunes website:
    http://www.itunes.com/download
After you've reinstalled iTunes, please ensure you have the latest version of QuickTime installed. You can find the latest version here:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download
Please reply to this email to let me know how you make out and if you require any further assistance with this, as I would be more than happy to help you resolve it. My hours are listed below for your convenience.
Thank you very much for being part of the iTunes Store family.
Even though I followed step 1 (backing up to disc), I don't think it was necessary, as all my music library and playlists etc remained intact. Eight hours burning DVDs for no real reason... Still, at least it's a fix.

Then , on step 7 and 8, I found out that my SC Info does not have "SC Info.sidb" and "SC Info.sidd" (It is an empty folder)
That's interesting. That might indicate damage to the SC Info folder itself (making it impossible for the configuration files to be created inside it).
By way of experiment, let's see if we can force iTunes to create a new set of folder and files.
Restart the PC. Now, rename the SC Info folder SC InfoOLD.
Try to launch itunes again. This will probably force iTunes to attempt to do a repair install of itself.
Does the repair install go through okay? If so, does ITunes eventually launch without the 42408?

  • When I try to access iTunes I get 'The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.' But when I try to download iTunes I get error (-42408)...help please.

When I try to access iTunes I get 'The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Would you like to download iTunes now?'' But when I try to down load I get "unknown error occurred (-42408)". Don't know what to do next and I can't get into my iTunes library. (I have an iMac, OS10.6.8.)

Did you uninstall iTunes 11 and replace it with iTunes 10.7? If so, you'll need to go through a few steps to put things right:
    Rename "iTunes Library.itl" to some other name;
    Copy newst ITL file from the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder into your main iTunes folder and rename it to "iTunes Library.itl";
    Download iTunes 10.7: http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes10/041-7195.20120912.d3uzQ/iTunes10.7.dmg
    Download/install shareware app called Pacifist;
    Open Pacifist and, separately, mount iTunes DMG file -- drag iTunes PKG file into Pacifist and install iTunes via the Pacifist application -- be sure to answer yes to replacing everything Pacifist asks about;
    Enjoy iTunes 10.7.
