  • The dreaded 4280 error

I have been receiving the 4280 error. My computer is up-to-date (it was reformatted less than a month ago), so there should be no issues there. I have tried to decrease my speed (tried burning speeds from 1-8) and nothing has been fixed. Does anyone have anything I can do to fix this problem? I have also tried different brands of cds, and that is not it either. Thanks!

  • Itunes for windows - burning issues - 4280 error

I have been able to burn cd's until I updated I-tunes with the 7.0 version. I can import but cannot burn at all. I have updated all my drivers and firmware, uninstalled and installed I-tunes, updated xp pro and windows, changed burn speeds, etc. etc. Sometimes it gives me a 4280 error before beginning the burn, other times it will go through the motions of burning but will only give me a blank cd at the end, and sometimes it will burn something (you can look at the disc and see that something is burned) but it doesn't work in any cd player or cd drive on the computer. Also I am running my computer as an administrator so that is not the problem. I have gone through searches on google and have gone through the forum discussions in I-tunes but have not found a solution. Here is the diagnostics that was run through I-tunes:

Well...after spending countless hours trying to update drivers and such...and basically finding out that everything was up to date....whoollaaa! I-tunes comes out with version 7.0.2 yesterday. So...I installed this and now I'm able to burn cd's.

I think I have an answer for all who have been previously able to burn CD's but are now getting an Error 4280 (or other error numbers)when the disc fails to i8nitialize during the burn process....I was able to burn CD's without problem for 2+ years using various version of I-Tunes, then just as others described, it just stopped working for no apparent reason (and nobody at Apple seemed overly helpful in getting it resolved beyond sending cut-'n-paste manual pages that didn't fix the problem.
Anyhow when running my Virus/Spyware software, it detected a Trojan called "Trojan.Lager" on my PC. As soon as I deleted it, my I-tunes went back to working nromally.

  • Error 4280 when trying to burn a CD...but not all the time

    Hi,
I hope someone can help me.
I have never had issues before but in the last few days it has been HORRIBLE.
I have brand new CDs to burn to and sometimes I get an error to insert a blank disc(how can it not be it is brand new)
Other times I try to burn a disc and get:
"the attempt to burn a disc failed an unknown error occured(4280)
I have deauthorized and reauthorized my PC. Some of the songs I am burning are ones I loaded from a CD that I had burned one before with NO problems.
I have wasted at least 10 CDs in the last few days trying to get this to work.
I have checked EVERYWHERE for a list of Error Code numbers but I can find it anywhere.
It will check playlist then start to "write" a song and it stops.
ANY help would be appreciated I am seriously losing my mind!!
I made sure I had the latest version of ITunes and upgraded last night to be sure and I am the admin on my PC and I am the only one that uses it.
I was able to burn one this AM and then the next one the errors happened again.
I have seen a lot of fixes that ask if my drive is
    Sony CD-RW/DVD CRX830E model drive
It is not when I did the diagnostic to figure out my drive I get this(and I have tried burning as low as 4X
The last failed audio CD burn had error code 4280(0x000010b8). It happened on drive F: PHILIPS CDD4851 CD-R/RW on CDR media at speed 8X.
Is there ANYONE that can help or at least point me in the correct direction
    Thank you

I've done a little bit of searching on google and had no idea that this problem has been happening for YEARS... The ONLY solution I saw was for this Sony Driver, which i'm sure everyone here already seen... I haven't had any problem burning until iTunes 8.0...
Anyway, I tried that (Sony Drive), even tried the RegCure (whatever) but it wasn't exactly "Free", so that was a dead end... I even tried lower burning speeds...still nothing... As you know, I have two discs left to burn for a friend...
I just gave up on iTunes and burned it with my Windows Media Player... Just lucky for me, I burn all my purchases from iTunes to an Audio CD in case something happens to my CPU (also so I can import to my Xbox 360)... And once I do that, I re-import them so I can listen to the albums on my WMP...
But as I was saying, I just used my WMP to burn the album that wouldn't burn in iTunes... After everything burned fine, I went back to iTunes for the other disc and suprise, suprise...it burned without any problem... WTH, right?¿?
It may have something to do with the discs i'm using... Because I inserted a Maxell Pro discs to "test" the burn out in iTunes... It burned without a hitch (before I used the above method) but because of this, I only let it burn for 5 seconds; because it usually cancels out in 3 from the error... I was only trying to test the burn, and was surprised that it started burning... It was a better quality discs and I didn't want to burn the album that I was testing on it... I tried to cancel but 5 seconds was too long...ruined the disc.. lol
So for clarity the disc i'm getting the error with is a Memorex disc... And its possible that they are to cheap...which was pointed out during my research online... But the problem with that theory is, I already burned 12 discs using those Memorex discs; so why NOW do I constantly get the error?¿? I couldn't be, totally the fault of disc quality...but then again who knows...
All I know is, as of now...I was able to burn another CD on iTunes after burning 1 from WMP first... Since I don't have anything else to burn (or that I want to) at the moment; as far as I know, i'm just waiting to get the error again... Which from my history could be 4-6 more disc down the line...
Another possibility could be that I actually burned the CD when I had WMP open... Maybe iTunes burning needs a "crutch" to be free from the error and after you burn one; you can burn a few CD's without worry of the error...
Sorry to be throwing so many "theories" out there, but having something to work on, is better than nothing... Once I have other CD's to burn, i'll come back with an update and tell you how many burns I got with iTunes before I got the error again...
    Disclaimer:
This is just my experience... I realize that many people have tried all sorts of CD-R discs and different burning software/hardware/whatever and they still get an 4280 error... I'm not trying to create false hope, as i've seen being pointed out from frustrated users...
So to summarize, individual results may vary... :P

  • I can't burn a disc from Itunes without getting error 4280 repeatedly.

I can't burn a disc from Itunes without getting error 4280 repeatedly. I was just able to burn a CD and now can't burn another. Any thoughts? I know my CD burner works as I just made a disc. I have tried changing file type from Audio to MP3 with no luck. Thanks for trying to help me.

    Hello Sonni,
It sounds like you are unable to burn a disc with iTunes due to this error code. I would first use the following article to check issues with the type of disc drive:
Burning disc in iTunes for Windows using a Sony CD-RW/DVD CRX830E model drive fails with 4280 error
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ta38101
If this is not the case, use the following article to help troubleshoot the issue:

  • Burning error 4280 and 4450

    Hello!
So I've read all the helpful answers about this, and have tried every fix, but nothing works. Every discussion thread is super old and I wonder if there is anything more up-to-date?
This registry fix... in this thread...last post.... MIGHT be my problem, (and I suspect that it is) but the directions are confusing and don't match my computer's registery or driver details.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/2904875#2904875
If someone can interpret these a little clearer or to match my particular computer it might be helpful. I can provide more info on this if needed.
    Some information:
I have a Toshiba laptop with a MATSHITA DVD RAM UJ 850S driver.
(I DO NOT have a Sony driver)
I have the 4280 error. I ALSO have the 4450 error.
It happens every time I burn no matter what brand of disc Im using or speed Im burning at.
Either it will burn a few songs and then cancel, or it will cancel before it starts to burn.
I can burn DVDs with my DVD copying software.
I CANNOT burn CDs with Windows Media Player or Real Player or anything else.
There are no needed updates to my driver. The computer tells me that everything is up-to-date.
I have had this problem for over a year and a half and have not found a fix yet.
Here is the diagnostic and thank you very much for taking the time to help me!

  • Attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred (4280).

I put a blank CD in. I open iTunes. I click on a play list and attempt to burn. It checks the play list like everything is fine and seems like it begins to burn the first track. Then after a few seconds it says *_canceling disc_*. It ejects the CD and an error message comes up: "_*The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred (4280).*_" I thought that the new update (7.6.2) might include a fix for this. No such luck of course! Have had this problem for awhile and have researched it on the internet. I am not the only one with this problem and people have been posting about this error since 2005! CDs burn fine and Media player. What's the deal? I thought Mac was supposed to be superior to Windows? I have a Slimtype DVDRW SSM-8515S drive. I have tried HP's solutions, lower burn speed, clicking this and that, ect. Please help. This problem makes me wish I didn't have an iPod. The only reason I started using iTunes was because of the iPod. +Not happy with this or Mac at all+. I don't care how cool their commercials are!
P.S. Have tried all of the suggestions from the following site:

These suggestions have worked for some people, but not me. Maybe they will help others who are experiencing the same unfortunate problems.

  • Error 4450 and error 4280

Ok this is bad, I am new to ITunes I purchased a bunch of songs and transfered them to my Ipod fine, then I burned them to 3 cd's no problem. Saturday I wen to record an audio cd with 100 dollars worth of new songs and I got error 4450 out of my I/O Magic dvd drive. I put another cd in my old TEAC cd drive and I got an 4280 error. I was using TDK CD-R MEDIA.So I went and got Verbatim media because it supposes to be excellent, same crap!!Same identical errors, I shuffled the songs and I created a new playlist out of the purchased playlist,I inserted the cd before opening Itunes, same errors and a dozen coasters!! I have the latest version of Itunes and I have no problem burning cd's with Nero out of my personal cd's. Now Itunes is giving me an " Access to the specified device, path is denied" when I do the diagnostics. IS THERE A WAY TO CONVERT THE M4P OF ITUNES INTO MP3 SO ICAN USE ANOTHER SOFTWARE TO BURN THE SONGS I PURCHASED? IS THERE A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM?? • ITunes Errors 4280 &4450

Hello Apple, is there a solution out there for those of us who can't burn a disc for our playlists without getting the 4280 and/or 4450 error message? I've read all the discussion threads out there and one Apple "document" regarding resolving the 4280 error IF you have a Sony DVD burner - I don't. I have a NEC drive on a Dell Dimension 4700. Is OK if is a recognized problem, by tell me and countless others with the same issue - is there a fix coming??? Thanks.

This is a user-to-user support site, so expecting an Apple employee to answer is futile.
Go to the support site for your PC and update the drivers is the best advice I can give.
