4506 Calalyst Console no longer works, switch functions ok

I came in this morning to work and it seems that the entire office was working at a snails pace (the 4506 that runs the office is in a Flat network config, only 40 devices all in the same domain). Everything runs at Gigabit or 100mbit speeds. It felt like everything had dropped to worse than 10mbit speeds! (Link speeds were still correct from the PCs, Gigabit PCs were still linked at Gigabit) I tried to access the switch from the console (the only way I have it setup to get console access) but I could not get a console (yes, the settings are correct, I even tried to recreate my hyperterminal config and tried using a different PC to connect just in case it was com-port issue). I can't get a console on the switch. I turned off the switch, and powered it back up, everything seems to work fine again. But I still can't get a console. I tried everything I could think of to get the console to work (set it to VT100 instead of Auto, tried Hardware FlowControl and No FlowControl). I didn't try a different cable, since I don't have one, but the cable has been in the same place for 3 years, and has never moved - it has always worked before as far as I know (it's been at least 6 months since I've logged in to it). Is the console port "dead"? Any help would be great.

Thanks for the suggestions folks.
I tried every baud rate I could (along with a whole bunch of other console settings just for the sake of trying - including trying a different PC). No luck.
I pulled the Supervisor out of the switch, dusted it off (not much dust) and check the RAM. It seemed very secure to me (I didn't actually pull it out, but I did release it from it's holder so it snaps up - It seemed very tight to me, so I left it alone and reset it back into the "snap holder").
Does the Management Port for Ethernet have any default settings? Is it possible it is setup (don't believe it was ever configured).
Can I do anything else at this point other than RMA? Will anything be covered under warranty or is it an out of pocket thing now? (the Switch is 4 years old now).
Can I reload the IOS in anyway? I do have the config on a flashcard (though, once again, that may be mute without console access).

    In the meantime, you could use Keyboard Viewer to type the characters which don't work.
    You can open Keyboard Viewer via the Input Menu - that's the menu that usually displays a flag, on the right end of the main menubar. If the Input Menu is not shown in the main menubar, go to System Preferences > Language & Text > Input Sources and checkmark the "Show Input menu in menu bar" item. On the same page, at the top of the list of input sources (languages ≈ keyboard layouts) checkmark the item "Keyboard & Character Viewer".
    With the Keyboard Viewer open, any letters you click on its representation of the keyboard will be entered in an open document.
    Note - this can't, of course, be used as a substitute for characters needed for startup commands.

    I also often have to do a forced quit as firefox freezes up. I did not have these problems until I tryed to upgrade to firefox4. for Mac.
    I tryed re-enstalling 3.5 but ended up with 5 which was worse. It appears that Firefox and Yahoo are no longer compatible.

    I know you can't help with my Yahoo problem, however, apparently at some time in the past I have went to the Sync and tried to figure it out on both my laptop and my desktop, because I have the long snyc key information. However, when I go to try to sync both computers I never get the box to enter that key on either one. That is my problem. So should I try and get a new sync key and see if that works.

  • [Solved] Alt-Tab window switching no longer working after update (JWM)

    The next issue I am trying to straighten out after a recent, long-overdue pacman -Syu, is the loss of window-switching functionality using the alt-tab key combination. This is under the JWM window manager, by the way. The alt key seems to work as expected when, for example, firefox has focus: if I hit alt left arrow, the browser goes back to the preceding page. But if I hit alt and tab together, say, in the browser or when a terminal has focus, it seems to be read as though I were pressing only the tab key. So, with two windows maximized on the desktop, the alt-tab combination does not toggle between them. If the terminal has focus I can see the cursor jumping over a tab space each time I press the key combination.
    Can anyone offers pointers on how I might resolve or begin diagnosing this issue? I should mention that another change I did in the wake of the update was to make the system log me in and start the GUI each time I boot the machine (as discussed at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/St … h_profile). I'm not sure why that would have any effect but I thought I should mention it. I think this is just a pretty standard pc105 keyboard by the way.

    Thank you for your input, anonymous_user. I decided, on reading it, to compare my .jwmrc with the /etc/system.jwmrc file. I noted that, in my .jwmrc, the keybindings section was empty, while that section in the /etc/system.jwmrc had several entries--and even one that seemed to refer to the alt-tab key combination. So I copied that section into my .jwmrc, restarted JWM, and the key combination now seems to be working as it should. Granted, it's a bit strange in that it doesn't open some kind of dialog box with the names of open windows, showing you in list form the windows you're scrolling through. But it does take you to other open windows when, after you've hit the tab key one or more times, you release the alt key. So the issue is resolved and was pretty simple.

  • ITunes 10.1 - Shuffle function no longer works correctly

    The shuffle function on playlists no longer works correctly since the most recent iTunes update.
    It will periodically stop playing without playing the entire playlist. It is a real hassle and kills the mood as you have to go back to the Mac and click play again. Please fix this issue as it is a very basic function.

  • Function keys no longer working with a new keyboard...

    I got a new keyboard and my function keys no longer work with it.  I am used to have them used in the standard format, i.e. F10-F12 control the voume, etc.  I have the "Use all f1,f2, etc." button clicked.  I have also tried restarting my computer.  Any thoughts?

    Try doing a SMC reset and PRAM reset.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
    Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
    Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
    Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Scan function no longer working on my Printer

    Recently moved locations and had to re set up my PC. Since then the scan function no longer works. I get the error message "Scanner reported an error", "Failed to open a session on the device". I have uninstalled and reinstalled the HP drivers, i have checked the internet connections and all are working. Actually have had a lot of troubles earlier with the rinter and the scanner re wireless connections but hoped to have finally overcome these.
    Not part of the problem but a real gripe as to what is the purpose of wireless devices when they never work as well as the ethernet connected devices, someone really needs to get this sorted <gripe over>.
    Can anyone help me please to get my system back up and running. I surgent now as currently on paternity leave and need to get some administrative issues doen from home in the next couple of days.

    Thank you for trying my recommendations, I believe this is a wireless issue. Let's go ahead and start troubleshooting the network:
    I would like you to shut down the Router, Printer and Mac in that order. Wait atleast 60 seconds, then power on the items in the way they were shut down. Re-attempt the scan. Was this successful or are you still getting the error message?
    If you are still getting the error message, let's try Pinging the Mac and testing the connection, click on the link below:

    If pings are successful the issue is not likely communication, instead it is probably a firewall blocking the scanning communication. Continue below:
    To turn on firewall protection:
    1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Security, and then click Firewall.
    2. 

Open the Firewall pane of Security preferences 


    3. Click the lock icon to unlock it, and then type an administrator name and password.


    4. Click Start to turn on Firewall.
    To allow only specified applications and services to connect:
    1. Click Advanced.


    2. Click the Add (+) button, and then select the application or service in the dialog that appears.

    Was that iTunes' safe mode as opposed to Windows' safe mode? iTunes safe mode is invoked by holding down CTRL+SHIFT immediately after clicking the icon to launch iTunes and continuing to hold until this message pops up:
    Click continue, then close iTunes and reopen. With luck iTunes now opens normally every time.

    All of a sudden, my "attach to email" function no longer works.  If I open a PDF in Acrobat 9.0, and I try to "attach to email," nothing happens.  This feature has always worked for me in the past.  When I check for updates, Acrobat reports that I'm up to date.  I recently updated Flash Player 16 and Reader XI (11.0.10).

    A few questions....I assume your network is connected to the Internet? Do you use a proxy? If so, is it set in the browser or in the Java Control Panel?

  • Places function no longer works on iPhoto.

    My Mac has OSX 10.6.8 and iPhoto 8.1.2.  The Places function no longer works.  I can select Places that I used on earlier photos, but it no longer locates new Places on the map.  I have read other people's discussions of this problem on the web, but I am not technical and do not understand much of what they say.  Any suggestions for a no-technical person would be welcome.

    I have this same problem on my new MacBook Pro. The biggest problem is that the embedded Google will NOT find most things that Google Maps finds. For example, the Oberoi Amarvillas in Agra India.
    I also can't move the pin for any of the places it already knows. I wonder if this might be related to trackpad settings? I can't find one that looks like it might help.
    I can find locations using their map coordinates (for example, 27.168647, 78.049150) and then go back and rename the place to something more helpful. But I can't fine tune the size of the location, which makes it hard to have highly localized places. And it gets the name of the state wrong, which makes it hard to find locations by general location.
    This puts a damper on processing photos right away, if I can't record them while I still remember their locations.

    You can try running the combo updater over your install but you might need to re-install Lion. Both options should not erase your data but if you do the re-install of Lion it's recommended that you backup first as a precaution.
