4507 10 Gig E supervisor

Hi,
If I have two supervisor WS-X4516-10GE/2 in one cat 4500 can i use all 4 10 gig ports at the same time? I know that i wont get the bandwidth but just wanting to know if all 4 ports are active even if one supervisor is in standby mode.

Hi Friend,
With supV-10GE, only 2 10GE ports are active and you can use only 1/1 and 2/1 ports. All the 4 10GE ports are not active at the same time.
HTH, Please rate if it does.

  • C4500 and supervisor engine 8+

    Hi all,
I wonder if anyone can offer any suggestions/hints regarding my dilemma...
We are about to have 2x point-to-point fiber links installed between our sites.  My colleague is looking at a MUX solution so that Ethernet, E1 and RS232 can be directly connected to the MUX and mapped accordingly at either end - Personally I don't want to use this solution and would rather look at cisco 4500 series.
    So, what would be better?
2x 4506 with supervisor 8-e at each site.  Have 1 fiber link per 4506 and a link between the 2 switches at the local site
1x 4506 with supervisor 8-3 at each site and aggregate the link (potential single point of failure if a supervisor engine fails)
1x 4507 with 2 supervisor 8-e at each site.  Have 1 fiber link per supervisor
1x 4507 with 2 supervisor 8-e at each site and aggregate the link - spare supervisor engine available should one fail
Also, are the line cards available to take E1 and RS232 connections?  Or, would I need to recycle my current 2911's to perform these tasks?
I'm looking at the 4500 series to future proof ourselves mainly.  We'll also be acting as a 'Service Provider' to other internal customers, so will be using vrf's quite a lot too, so will need the processing power and memory...
If more information is needed, let me know and I'll post it up.  At the moment we are in concept and design.

    Dan
Can't really comment on MUX solution as not my strength but in terms of the 4500s.
If you are going to be a sort of SP to internal customers then two switches per site not one would be my choice. That would provide you wit not only supervisor and module redundancy but also the chassis as well.
There isn't really enough information in terms of what lies behind each pair of 4500s eg. user vlans, do you need to extend vlans between sites, other L3 devices so the rest are just things to think about.
4500s run VSS so that could be an option. VSS has quite a few benefits and few downsides. Upgrading would be the thing I would be slightly concerned with in that we do see posts on these forums about hitless upgrades not working properly.
That said it may just be we only see the ones that don't work and most do and i haven't used VSS on 4500s so it may be a non issue.
VSS would allow you to put both links into the same etherchannel and spread the links across both chassis at each site.
If you are thinking of connecting with L3 links then you need the right IOS for L3 MEC support on VSS. With two separate switches obviously this isn't an issue.
Again it comes down to what is behind the 4500s. For example if you had other L3 devices that were dual connected to each switch then either VSS or separate switches connected to the other site with L3 links would work well as each L3 device would see equal cost paths to remote networks
If you had singly connected L3 devices though then VSS would be the better choice because with separate switches only one of the links would be used.
I'm not really arguing for either as i thin both could work well depending on the other requirements.
In terms of throughput, I'm sure you are aware but obviously the modules you buy are as important as the actual supervisor in terms of the performance you will gain.

  • 4507R Supervisor module question

    Hi everyone,
I am getting the following message when I try to configure the gig1/2 interface which is on Sup mod 1 of my 4507 switch.
    router(config)#int gig1/2
    % WARNING: Interface GigabitEthernet1/2 is usable/operational
% only when this is the only supervisor present.
    Show mod is as follows:
    Sing85-2Sw1#sh mod
    Chassis Type : WS-C4507R
Power consumed by backplane : 40 Watts
Mod Ports Card Type Model Serial No.
    ---+-----+--------------------------------------+------------------+-----------
    1 2 1000BaseX (GBIC) Supervisor(active) WS-X4515
    2 2 1000BaseX (GBIC) Supervisor(standby) WS-X4515
I am novice to the way the Sup mods are set up and work. Does the warning mean 'if the active sup mod fails over to the standby I will have a problem'? In that case do I have to configure an interface in mod 2 same as mod 1 so that the setup works during failover? If the warning message means something else please explain.
    Thanks in advance.
    RB

    Hi RB,
The two Gigabit Ethernet interfaces available with redundancy mode are the first Gigabit Ethernet ports on each supervisor. That is, only Gig 1/1 and Gig 2/1 are available. The other two ports, Gig 1/2 and Gig 2/2, are not available.
Unlike Cat6500 platform where all ports are active, the Cat4507R has redundancy on ports themselves,
meaning if you have two Supervisor IVs, it will only make ports 1/1 and 2/1 active and rest will be the failover ports in case active ones need to failover.
So, for an example, you have 1/1 and 2/1 active. If 1/1 would fail, then you will have 1/2 and 2/1
active. Below is the documentation on this.

  • I have invested over 6 hours on the phone and with my Verizon Authorized Rep. trying to get the Bonus 1 Gig of Data for myself on the More Plus Plan.  Cut and dry situation but today was told I have to wait about 7 days until they can get me "an answer" o

Basic question is why are any of the minimun 8 Verizon reps that I or my Authorized Verizon Rep (at Costco) spoke with unable to resolve a very simple, straightforward issue that should have been resolved in 15 minutes max.  Instead I (a 14 year verizon customer) have been given the runaround and have invested over 6 1/2 hours in trying to get someone to acknowledge that I an owed 1 GB of Bonus Data on my new phone on our new plan.  My wife got hers.  I am just venting now as I intend on returning the phone tomorrow (I got it Thursday) and turning around and getting an identical new phone.  This was suggested to me as an option by both the Rep who sold my wife her phone and the rep who sold me mine as that way I would not have to contiinue dealing with this ridiculous state of affairs (they indicated that my Free gig request was being sent to another department and that it would be about 7 days befor they get an answer).   Just Venting  .  Thanks

No I was considerate, etc.  The root of the problem stems from the fact that when I went to get my new phone I asked the salesperson if I should sign up for the new plan or if my wife should do it the following day when she buys her new phone (also at a Costco but in a different state).  The salesperson said it made absolutely no difference so I elected to have my wife do it.  When she did the next day she got her free Gig and her salesperson told her that I need to call in to make sure I get the gig that I am entitled to as well.  That's when the runaround started with the first call  consisting of me basically advising Verizon of what the promotion consists of, etc.since they insisted that it was one gig per Plan, that there were no exceptions to this, etc.  As mentioned they wanted to know where I got the information that it was one gig per qualifying phone. (Both the rep and her supervisor obviously were not aware of how Verizons heavily touted More Everything plan works). They told me finally that I needed to go back to the Costco where I got the phone.  I did.  The salesperson apologized numerous times to me for advising me that it made no difference who signs up for the plan or when.  She then spent over two hours on the phone (with me next to her) attempting to explain to Verizon what happened, how it was her fault, and how I was clearly entitled to the Bonus Gig since I also had a qualifying phone.  Finally she was transferred to someone who authorized the Bonus Gig (since I was clearly entitled to it) and who indicated that it might take 24 hours to show up on my new Plan.  72 hours later, no change, and the runaround continues some more.  The only reason I even came to this forum was to let off some steam since no one could give me an answer..  It's clear that I am entitled to the Bonus Gig yet the last supervisor I spoke with told me that he could only pass the request on to another department via e-mail (no direct contact, etc. even though I gave him the name and employee # of the Verizon rep who indicated the Bonus was approved) and that an answer should be forthcoming in about 7 days.  I was very cordial with everyone I spoke with as I understand that they take their direction from the top.  The countless hours I have spent dealing with this situation is something that no-one should have to go through, particularily someone who has been a Verizon Plan customer since about year 2000.  Everyone seems to agree that I am entitled to the free gig but no one seems to be in a position to help this customer.  Its a horrible way to treat someone.  I talked with the original saleslady today and told her I would be in tomorrow to turn in the phone and get a new one along with the gig I was entitled to.  She said that would be fine and wouldn't be a problem but that she would be happy to try calling Verizon once again to try to resolve the issue.  I indicated that I'm done with wasting time taliking with well-meaning and courteous (and I assume underpaid) employees who I assume are pretty much directed from above that any concessions they make, even if the customer is entitled to them, will reflect badly on their employee evaluations .  Good thing I am retired or I would really be worked up.  They only way I would consider even talking to Verizon anymore on this is if they were to waive  the $60 in upgrade fees my wife and I paid for the new phones.  I hope this explains the situation to your satisfaction.  Thanks.

  • How to delete the VSL config on 4507 switch pair

I have a 4507 switch pair I've been using in the lab and now need to return them to factory defaults.
I can't seem to get rid of the VSL portion of the config though.  The pair is no longer connected and I'm working from the serial console.
I have 'erase startup-config' on both and deleted all but the IOS image and license file from bootflash.
    bootvar looks like this:
    Switch#sho bootvar
    BOOT variable = bootflash:cat4500e-universalk9.SPA.03.04.03.SG.151-2.SG3.bin,12;
    CONFIG_FILE variable does not exist
    BOOTLDR variable does not exist
    Configuration register is 0x2102
Standby not ready to show bootvar

And I see this message during boot on both switches.

  • 802.1X Authentication on 4507 switch using AD

    Hi,
I want to implement 802.1X authentication on Cisco 4507 switch. Authentication should be done thru Microsoft Active directory. Can someone guide me in this regard? Thanks

Before you proceed with 802.1x based configuration make sure that your switch/Supervisor supports dot1x. Depending on the type of Radius server you are using the compatibility might change but here is the compatibility guide for Cisco's ISE:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/security/ise/1-3/compatibility/ise_sdt.html
With regards to configurations. Have a look at the following link (Again assuming you are using ISE):

  • Default Config Register for 4507 ?

what the Defult Config Register for 4507 ? this was Question and the answer was as below
When supervisor cards are shipped out from the factory, the config-register is set to 0x2101.   The value of 0x2101 means "ignore the boot variable string and boot the first valid IOS image from flash".
The correct config register value should be 0x2102 but this means you need to have the correct boot variable string or else the switch will either boot the wrong IOS file or the switch will go into ROMmon.
i want to know what is the correct variable string , and how to know it , and what is the correct value ???

  • 6500 with 2 SUP's/do the GIG ports on the backup SUP work, when in backup?

Hey I'm bout to install a 6500 series with 2 SUP engines, one for primary and one for backup in the same chassis.
My question is: Do the fiber/GIG ports on the backup SUP engine work, when it is in backup mode, or ONLY when the SUP engine is in primary mode???

    Hi Chris,
The gig ports on the standby supervisor are absolutely functional, and the converse is true in the event of a switchover.
    Documented here:

  • Question on 4507 uplink ports

    Hi,
The supervisor for the 4507/4510, the 8E, has 8 10Gb uplinks. Are those uplinks suitable as access ports for Servers or VMware hosts, or are they only for inter-switch links?
    Thanks,
    Waqas

    Hi,
You can use them for whatever you like.  They can connect to VMs, standalone server, workstation, inter-switch etc... They can also be access port or trunk ports.

  • 10G link 4507/6-E to 3750 ?

I have an existing (almost full) 4507R-E with a 6-E supervisor running 12.2(44)SG.  I need to bring up 20-30 1G ports in a nearby (~15m) lab that will have a great deal of bandwidth between them (~800Mbps per port), and 2-6 Gbps traffic back to our 4507.  I was thinking about building this by starting a 3750 stack in the lab (one for now) to give me room to grow, and keep the traffic on that stack off our mostly full 4507.  I'm having difficulty determining if it is possible to install a 10G link between a 3750E/X and my 6-E, is it?  Alternatively, could I upgrade my supervisor to a 7-E and use a SFP+ uplink port for this link?  Are there other good ways to set this up?  Any suggestions greatly appreciated...

I understand the limitations of the 4507R-E, my challenge is in validating interconnection to a 3750 stack.
    Would this work?
X2-10GB-SR module installed in Supervisor ( SC connector, IEEE 802.3ae)
      C3KX-NM-10G module installed in 3750
SFP-10G-SR module installed in C3KX-NM-10G (LC connector, IEEE 802.3ae)
FDDI grade MMF fiber, 62.5 micron core, SC to LC connectors, 850nm
I've been bit by attempting to connect modules that are not identical, and I haven't tried this specific pairing before...

  • 4500E Supervisor Engine 8-E Uplinks

    Hi,
Please I want to find out if it is possible to use all uplinks ports on the 8 port Sup8-E modules configured as a redundant pair on a single 4510R+E chassis?
I noticed that only 4 ports are active on each sup8-E modules (making it a total of 8 ports) but I will like to use all 16 uplink ports on both modules.
The chassis is licensed for entservices and the current ios is Cisco IOS XE Release 3.3.0XO(15.1(1)XO).
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Regards,
    Josh.

    Hello,
you can 4x 1/10Giga ports per SUP when you have 2 SUPs in a 4510R+E...but it seems that if you have a 4507R+E you can have only 2x 1/10 Giga ports per SUP
See Table High-Availability, Uplink and Wireless Options for Supervisor Engine 8-E in http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-4500-series-switches/data_sheet_c78-728191.html
It will be possible in future to not have this limitation?!?

  • Suggest 4507 or 3850 for location

     Hi...
I am in the process of redesigning a location with about 150 users using  PoE IP Phones, printers, etc. We currently don't have any storage or servers at this location but we are looking at adding a few in the next years as well as wireless. I need suggestions regarding the type of chassis I need for this location. On the table, we have the following switches:
     4507
    Dual supervisor
    Dual power supply
    PoE cards
Based on the head-count we have an open slot for growth; however, we can always us 4510E
    3850 Stack
    Dual power stack
Understanding that switches can have 10Gbps modules
    Support wireless by default
Stack can have up to 9 switches providing growth room
Based on this and your experience, I would like to hear your suggestions and/or questions on what to use for this location.
Thank you for you help in advanced.

    Hey,
This subject is I would say too much open for discussion, still I believe as per your listed requirements 3850 would be an obvious choice. However I recommend accessing your needs in detail and then decide what device to deploy.
    HTH.

As you can see on the Catalyst 4507R the following stats are 0
Number of Service Group Clients:     0
Number of Service Group Routers:     0
for the services 61 and 62.
In the Router that start reflect a diferent value.
I can appreciate a technical information about how can I configure WCCP for the comunication between the Catalyst 4507 with Sup II+ with the WAE 474.
I probed with other router instead the catalyst 4507 and the configuration and communication were succesfully; that was for verify posible error of configuration on WAEs; but the final objetive is to use the catalyst 4507R.
    Thank for your assistance.
