48-Port 1Gb PoE ESW Switch?

I was looking at the ESW switches and noticed there is no 48-Port, Gig, PoE model.
The closests I found was 48-Port, Gig model (ESW-540-48-K9), no PoE.
I was wondering if there are any plans to make such a model.
It would probaly be: ESW-540-48P-K9

It depends on what you're looking for. ESW is designed and optimized for a solution deployment, where a mixture of UC500, SA500, AP541, etc products are being deployed. In this context they all work better together allowing for discovery, management, and simplified deployment of these products as a unit. The switch supports CDP and Smartports and integrates into the CCA network management tools. One other piece - ESW comes with next business day replacement (in select markets) as part of the warranty. Some customers value this as a "step up".
The SFE/SGE switches by contrast do not have this solution "glue", but instead has support for other advanced capabilities not present in ESW. For example, it delivers support for Stacking, IPv6, MVR, Static L3, etc. It is also lower in price. Some customers may value this as a "step up".
Cisco has the broadest portfolio to address the needs of very diverse customer base.
We will take your suggestion of adding 48 Gig POE into the ESW product line as a potential product enhancement and discuss internally, so I appreciate your feedback.

  • 4 port switch to 8 port 1GB, iMac loses ethernet cable

We are getting prepped for an upgrade from our 10MB internet service to 1GB fiber.  We were trying to do the easy things first, but have run into an unexpected problem.
We use a 4 port switch to distribute our current DSL signal to several locations in the house (never with any problem.)  To handle the additional speed and add extra spots, we bought and installed an 8 port 1GB switch in exactly the same location.  Everything works as previously except my iMac.
For whatever reason (and I would LOVE to hear opinions on why) the Mac now says it does not see an ethernet cable (the same cable, of course) and I lose the internet.  The only change is the switch itself.
Am I missing a requirement for changing settings on the Mac to deal with this switch?  We have not changed the input speed, we are still on a 10MB DSL.  We're stumped.
BTW, if I plug the 8 port switch in, and use a 1GB USB dongle with my current ethernet cable, the iMac works fine.  And it still works with the 4 port switch.  Definitely not a cable problem.  Stumped.  Many thanks for any and all ideas.

Thanks for both your replies.  I read them earlier in the day, and been trying a few things out...
1st, I tried plugging the hub3 into lan4 on the peak switch, and the other 2 (sky and roku), along with my laptop for testing purposes into 1, 2 and 3, and all worked great!
Well... all wasnt so great, the connection was sporadic and intermittent, ping was low, and throughput was fast, but it was on and off.  A speedtest.net would stall, web links sometimes took 2 or 3 clicks, and so on.
So what have I learnt?  Well, the fact that it has an internet port (which I was wrongly trying to use before), means that it isnt a basic switch.
So today, I went and bought http://www.tp-link.dk/products/details/?model=TL-SF1005D.  Plugged that in the same way, and everything works perfect!
So now, I have the router (downstairs), plugged into the hub3 (upstairs via existing ethernet run throuth the stairs), 3 ports plugged into 2 pc's and 1 youview box, the 4th into a powerline socket upstairs,, with the other powerline socket plugged in downstairs behind the TV, connecting to the tp-link switch socket 5, with the sky+HD and Roku XL plugged into 1 and 2 on the switch respectively, and after testing I now everything running lightening fast with HD on demand, and the world is good
So thanks for both your advice, i learnt a bit today.

  • SG500-52P 52-Port Gigabit PoE Stackable Managed Switch Stack

Have created a stack with a SG500-52P 52-Port Gigabit PoE Stackable Managed Switch and a SG500-28P 28-Port Gigabit PoE Stackable Managed Switch.
All seems fine, but my query is the SG500-52P 52-Port Gigabit PoE Stackable Managed Switch is showing has Master and the SG500-28P 28-Port Gigabit PoE Stackable Managed Switch is showing as a Backup, should this be a Slave?  Have a got the link cable wrong?

    Nope. You're all good.
In an SG500 stack, there are three roles: master, backup and slave. The master currently holds the management role of the stack. The backup is the switch that will take over the management role if the master fails. Slaves are remaining stack members. As long as the master is active, the backup will essentially function as a slave.
If you only have two switches, there will be a master and a backup with no slaves at all.

  • ESW Switches and Smartports

    Hi All,
Just going through the ESW switches, and it looks like their is no option for 'Server' on these switches (I have noted this on the 2960G's as well).
Is this a shortcoming of CCA, or has this been excluded on purpose.  I know that for the 520 and 500 switches it was there.
    Thanks!
    Chris

    John,
I do understand that you can use a server in a non server port... but based on the macro below:
    Macro name : cisco-desktop
    Macro type : default interface
    # macro keywords $access_vlan
    # desktop port role
    switchport mode access
    switchport port-security maximum 1
    no macro description
    macro description cisco-desktop
    queue-set 2
    service-policy input general-map
    srr-queue bandwidth share  5  5 40 50
    switchport access vlan $access_vlan
    switchport port-security
    switchport port-security violation restrict
    switchport port-security aging time 2
    switchport port-security aging type inactivity
    spanning-tree portfast
    storm-control broadcast level 10.0
    cdp enable
    spanning-tree bpduguard enable
    And then this macro:
    Macro name : cisco-server-critical
    Macro type : default interface
    # macro keywords $access_vlan
    # server port role critical
    switchport mode access
    switchport port-security maximum 1
    no macro description
    macro description cisco-server-critical
    queue-set 1
    service-policy input critical-server-map
    srr-queue bandwidth share  5  5 70 20
    switchport access vlan $access_vlan
    switchport port-security
    switchport port-security violation restrict
    switchport port-security aging time 2
    switchport port-security aging type inactivity
    spanning-tree portfast
    storm-control broadcast level 10.0
    cdp enable
    spanning-tree bpduguard enable
It doesn't set the qos the same ways.  I assume we would have a noticable difference in speed to the server, and since the esw's are not ios, I dont' see there is anyway to set these manually.
Now I do realize that these switches are base switches, but in my opinion we are penalizing SMB with substandard options.  I got these macro definitions from my CE520-24PC.
    Thanks!

  • POE ESWs and Older 79XX phones

Want to confirm if the ESW PoE switches can power pre-standard phones such as the 7940G.
    Thanks

There's actually more to it than that.  The circuitry used to detect a pre-standard PoE device is different from IEEE, though I've long since forgotten the details.  What this means though is that a switch needs to be specially designed to support both pre-standard PoE and IEEE PoE.  As far as I know, all of the Catalyst series switches do support both forms, while the the majority of PoE switches from the different vendors do not.    In the case of the ESW switches, it looks like you're in luck - I just doublechecked by plugging in an old 7960 to an ESW I have here and it powered up OK.
    Cheers,
    Dave.

  • ESW Switches

    Cisco Guys,
Here are a few things things / suggestions on these switches...
    1) ESW 540 8P - it would be great if you could make the form factor bigger to have an internal power supply.
    2) CCA 2.2.1 - Doesn't have all the port roles in for the ESW switches
    3) VLAN's are less desirable to setup through the web interface (see point 2)
    4) Port numbering... Can we look at setup of the port numbers to be the same as the non ESW switches.  For example have the ports not 1,2,3,4 but 1,3,5,7.  Consistency is king.
I think these will be a nice step past the linksys heritage.
    Thanks Guys!

    Hi Chris
I will forward the feedback to the product manager (PM).
i really like the idea of internal power supply for the ESW540-8P, especially if it is going to be rack mounted.
Good luck on the port re-numbering
but I'll pass it onto the PM.
I believe the next version of CCA is due out this month, will have the expanded smartport roles, but i guess you got around that today via the ESW GUI.
    regards Dave

  • LINKSYS SFE 2010 48-Port 10/100 Ethernet Switch

    Dear All,
The 48 port ethernet linksys switch is not saving the configuration after reboot.Soft and hard reboot tried but still problem exist.Any suggestions are welcomed.

Hi, My name is Eric Moyers. I am a Network Support Engineer in the Cisco Small Business Support Center.
The settings for connection using Hyperterminal through the Console port should be:
    Bits per second: 38400
    Databits: 8
    Pairity: None
    Stop bits: 1
    Flow Control: None
When you finish configuring the HyperTerminal, the Login screen appears. The first time you open the Console Interface, use the default username admin and leave the password blank and press the Enter key. You can set a password later from the User and Password Settings screen. The Main Menu screen displays six menu choices: System Configuration Menu, Port Status, Port Configuration, PoE Configuration, Help, and Log Out.
User and Password Settings, IP Configuration, File Management, Restore System Default Settings, Reboot System and Back to Main Menu.
To restore the Switch back to the factory default settings, select Restore System Default Setting and press Enter. A confirmation message appears asking Are you sure? [Y/N]. Press the Y key to continue or the N key to cancel the action.
System Configuration Menu options: (Which is where you will need to go) consist of: System Configuration, Management Settings
After pressing Y, at this point reboot your system and it will be back to Factory Fresh.
If you have any questions or this doesn't work, please let me know. I am attachng the Admin Guide for you as well.

  • Can I create a port channel to two switches that are not stacked?

Two switches, not stacked, but connected together via 802.1q trunk.
Server with four NICs, capable of trunking and LACP.
Can the switches be setup to have an etherchannel between the two switches and the server?

    Hi,
    In short NO
You would need to connect your server to only ONE switch if you want all 4 nics in the same TEAM.
You could use 2 TEAMS and put 2 nics in each forming a 2 port etherchannel to each switch

  • What can be the max difference in cable lengths that we can have between the ISLs in a port-channel between MDS switches?

    Hello All
What can be the max difference in cable lengths that we can have between the ISLs in a port-channel between MDS switches? Do we have any documentation?
    Thanks
    Chetan

competitive solution instead recommends a distance variance of 30 meters or less among ISLs within a trunk. If the distance variance is greater than 30 meters, undesired and degraded performance will occur. For example, if a trunk has a distance of 100 kilometers, the competitive trunking solution allows a cable length variance of only 0.03 percent!

  • 2-Port Dual View KVM Switch

I'm about to purchase a 2012 (late fall) Mac Mini.  I currently use a G5 Tower w/Tiger, with two monitors VGA monitors.  As technology changes faster than I can keep up, is there a chance that "2-Port Dual View KVM Switch" means I could connect two monitors at the same time?  I want to be able to switch between the G5 and the Mac Mini.
Part of the discription reads: This new KVM Switch lets you control two dual-head, VGA-enabled USB computers from one USB console that includes two VGA monitors.
    Please advise.
    Patt

    Thanks Eric,
I know that Kvm is used to swap between two computers, what I don't know is if there a way to swap dual monitors.  If I continue to use my G5, as this has all the software I use, and soon the internet will become less and less usualble on the G5, will the KVM work swaping back and forth if I use two monitor on my G5 and one monitor on my Mac Mini?  Of course, my goal is to continue using both my VGA monitors for both Macs.
I'm understanding that since the 2012 Mac Mini only has room for one VGA monitor which is connected to the thunderbold port via an adapter which comes with the Mac Mini  (true or false)?
I'm understanding that I could connect the Mac Mini to two VGA monitors if I purchase an adapter that would connect to the HDMI port and using the DVI port/adapter VGA - I can connect two monitors.
But will the KVM have the means for swapping the mouse, keyboard and two monitors back and forth? This is my big hurtle.
This is what I saw on the discription that was different from other KVM discriptions.
"This new KVM Switch lets you control two dual-head, VGA-enabled USB computers from one USB console that includes two VGA monitors."
You were very kind to help, I hope my clarification helps.

  • Port Groups on Multiple switches

Is it possible to create a port group that contains ports from multiple physical switches. We are using Catalyst 3500 series switches that are connected to a Catalyst 6509 running layer 3.

The Etherchannel do not HAVE to be on the same switch.
You may configure an etherchannel between 3 physical switches :

  • Port aggregation on different switches?

    Hello all :)
I got a server PC with two fast ethernet NICs (NICS do support port aggregation)
I know you can connect two 100 Mbps ports of server to two fast ethernet ports of a switch, this way you get one 200 Mbps link. If one of the ports or one of the links fail, other link keeps working.
this is a vey nice redundancy.
    My question is;
is it possible to bundle two fast ethernet ports of server to two different switches? (first ethernet port of PC to switch 1 and second ethernet port of PC to switch 2. switch 1 and switch 2 are connected each other with an uplink)
if possible, what is the CLI command for that?
thank you very much for helping.

    Hello,
AFAIK, and unless something has changed very recently, the only way to link two (or more) switches together in a single Etherchannel is in a stack configuration.
Nortel appears to have a feature called Split MultiLink Trunking, which does multichassis trunking, you might want to have a look at the document below:

  • ESW Switch Management - KPIs

I am looking for list of SNMP traps, Syslog messages (OIDs) recommended for Fault and performance monitoring of ESW switches.
It will great if you can help me on this.

Two approaches are two different kind of design. One is L2 VLAN separated the segment and one is L2 w/ individual NM segment.
What I suggest is to combine both designs that use separated VLAN w/ loopback address that dedicated for the NM traffic. The reason is at L2, it can separated the NM traffic from the production traffic, and for L3, you easily to observe the NM host by different subnet of the loopback address.
However, if there is WAN link that cannot carry VLAN traffic, then you have to use second approach in the WAN link.
And, if it is a L2 switch only, then you have to create a NM VLAN and assoicate the loopback address to this VLAN for NM.
Pease feel free to comment and discuss.
    Hope this help.
