480i codec still in existance?
We are using the freeware app. Multiscreener to sync two projectors through mini macs and have been informed by the artists that in case the files are too much for the macs to handle to convert it to a 480i or 480p SD DV-NTSC.
However when viewing the available codecs in FCP, QT, and Compressor I don't see this codec in the menu.
Is this an out of use codec, or is there something that is comparable to this one for us to use?
I'm exporting it in DV_PAL as I type, and will try it out when it is done, but to streamline any foreseeable problems I am asking the gurus out there on their thoughts right now.
(I decided to export it in PAL because that was the original file format, and when I used NTSC as suggested it seemed to stutter quite a bit, FYI)
Nate
480i and 480p aren't codecs, they are frame sizes. Typically standing for 720x480. DV/PAL, DV50, ProRes....these are codecs.
And PAL and NTSC are region types...not codecs. PAL is European, NTSC is North/South American and Japan. 25fps vs 30fps...completely different frame rates...so yeah, converting PAL to NTSC just by exporting will cause problems.

MXF Done Right! (but codec still done wrong)
"Uniting video, audio and metadata into a single file, the Canon XF305 and XF300 use an MXF (Material eXchange Format) File Wrapper..."
I've been saying all along it was entirely possible. Much as I like Panny, they really muffed their first attempt at tapeless with the whole "folder structure" idea. (Sony, too)
Unfortunately, Canon muffed the one thing Panny did right (I-frame only) by making the new models Long GOP.
I don't get it. It seems pretty simple to me. When will camera makers do this HD thing right? We need affordable (under $5,000) cameras with 3 full raster CCDs, recording at full resolution in I-frame 4:2:2 to a single file on affordable media - preferably something which is not hamstrung by a 4GB file size limit. (Damn Mac users and their 'compatibility' issues.)Panasonic Debuts First Micro Four Thirds Pro Camcorder
"Equally new to the camera format is...dual SDXC slots that, combined, can handle at least 128 GB of total storage and more as larger memory cards ship."
Unfortunately, the recording format is AVCHD. But it is encouraging to see SDXC coming to market, as it does not suffer the dreaded 4 GB file size limit. The only clip breaks will be between cards, as it should be.
We're getting closer. -
I would like to clear my address row history completely, but I never get it totallly emptied. The remaining addresses are not bookmarked, i.e no stars on the row, but still exist after I have emptied all history both via the History link and via the Tools link. How come adresses still can exist after I have done this?
== This happened ==
Not sure how oftenI clear all history but i still get hints (what i've typed before) when i wanna type something in a site i've visited before!! whats the solution?

Avid Users-QuickTime and (Older) AVID QuickTime Codec
Hello everyone. The reason I am posting here regarding this instead of in Avid's own forum (I believe they do have one) is simply because I do not have an account/ID there, and most Avid users are also Mac users.
Anyway, the remaining of our graphic macs in the office will be upgrading to G5s and OS X Tiger soon (finally) and one "old" Avid Symphony (on a Windows NT) is still 'working with us' and the new OS X Avid QuickTime Codecs are unable to read any QuickTime movie exported from the Symphony to the macs.
Right now because we are still using OS 9, an older Avid QuickTime Codec (that only exist in OS 9 platform) enable us to read the movie clip and allow us to render properly in After Effects.
To allow that clip from Symphony to be able to use on a Mac OS X platform, we have to use QuickTime Player (OS 9) to re-export it using the newer Codec into a new movie clip.
After we finished rendering we will use the same method to re-export that clip to "downgrade" the clip to the older codec.
If we all use new G5s, one way is to install OS 9 as Classic in G5, launch it and launch QuickTime Player to do the same - unless in Classic environment this method will not work??
I am just wondering if anyone in this profession has the same "dilemma" the same working situation as us? And how do you solve it?? We can't simply just get rid of the Symphony (we love to... ha ha ha)
Thanks and cheersI had the same issue and I located the registry key HKEYCURRENTUSER\Software\Apple Computer, Inc.\Quicktime\LocalUserPreferences
I then substituted the %USERPROFILE% variable for the entire key and copied the preferences file, which I created with an account the had admin privileges, to the root of the mandatory user profile. Now I can run the software as a user using this mandatory profile and the software runs without prompting me to Update the software. -
New Gl 0Fi_GL_14 and impact on existing _4 AP and AR datasources
We will be moving to new GL and I'm investiagting the 0FI_GL_14 Datasource for this purpose.I have couple of questions on this datasource.
I couldn't find any related AP and AR datasources for new GL. Does this mean we can continue to use 0FI_AP_4 and 0FI_AR_4 for AP and AR reporting ??
Our current dataflow for GL is 0FI_GL_4 -> GL_O02 ODS-> Custom cube
Since we have lot of reports out of the GL custom cube can we set our new path as follows so that we do not have to re create all the queries. This way we will still be existing cube with ne wGL datasource and ODS.
0FI_GL_14-> 0FIGL_O14->Existing customcube.
Points will definetley be awarded. ThnaksHi,
I had also done 0FI_GL_10 in the past with a similar concept as yours and it did work. Plus, during that time I had researched on AP and AR datasources and I don't think there are any new ones like we have for GL. I believe the new datasources for GL are because of the 2 new tables in ECC (FAGLFLEXA/FAGLFLEXT).
I think the solution that you are trying to build should work, will need some testing though, but there is a lot more to offer in the GL_14 datasource than the old GL_4, so you might want to build a new cube to accommodate that. Or you can update 2 cubes from the GL_14 ODS, 1 would be your existing one and other would a new cube, so when the users are ready you can migrate them from the existing to other.

Why can I no longer close down Firefox while saving existing tabs?
For some freason, I don't know what, but 2 things are going wrong.
1. I cannot log in to an already registerd account with the same name an my [email protected] email address
2. Why can I no longer close down Firefox while still saving existing tabs.
If this reaches a person rather than a machine, I would really appreciate a reply to the aol address as I don't tend to use hotmail that muchIn Firefox 3.5 and later you can no longer click the Tab bar to set focus to it.<br />
You can press Ctrl+K (Mac: Cmd+K) to set focus to the search bar and press the Tab key until the tab bar gets focus.

Hi,
I have a 2008 iMac using mini-DVI to HDMI adaptor, feeding that to HDMI A/V receiver, and then HDMI to S-Video converter to old TV. Is there a way to output 480i and still have the iMac screen look right? I have to mirror to get video to TV, otherwise all I see is the galaxy desktop. The TV only has the correct proportions when I set the iMac to 480i, but then the iMac looks, well, like 640 x 480, just like the old days.
Thanks - BrianWhat I'm attempting to do now is to stream a live feed from my MacBook to the TV. So, for example, if I'm viewing instructional content or a CNN news feed on the MacBook I would like to view it on the TV.
Have you tried the Twonky MediaServer's "Media Feeds" feature yet?
FWIW. I do not have a DLNA-capable TV. Instead I have a 1st Gen 2001 HD Sony XBR set. For a DLNA receiver, I use an XBox 360 connected by component cables (pre-HDMI era). I use a MacMini dedicated as the Media Server which gets its video files from an external hard drive (NewerTech miniStack) connected to an 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station. The connections are primarily Giga-bit Ethernet except for the XBox 360 which is using a 802.11n connection to the Extreme.
In addition to streaming 720p HD video from the external drive, I also stream YouTube feeds via the Twonky Server. -

You can check if the 'files' file has the files that are causing errors, e.g.
[karol@black ~]$ grep "usr/lib/httpd/modules/mod_dontdothat.so" $(find /var/lib/pacman/local -name "subversion-*")/files
usr/lib/httpd/modules/mod_dontdothat.so
but I think there's something else going on.
I've noticed all of the errors concern files from /usr. Do you have some special setup, like a separate /usr partition?

QT can see Codecs which are there?
This is weird.... but here I go
My laptop : MacBook Pro, OS10.4.8, FCP 5.1.2, QT 7.1.3, no software updates available... it worked fine with all DVC Pro HD footage from a Panasonic HVX200 camera. In fact I have a demo sequence I use regularly for demonstration... so it's a known quantity.
OK, a student gives me a QT movie made by "exporting an image sequence directly from QT 7.1.3 as a DVCPro HD 720p 60 fps movie". The original image sequence was made in Maya, and comprised of Iff stills which were opened in QT as an image sequence. I'm not familiar with IFF .. but they open in in QT individually and as a still sequence.
The exported QT movie played fine on the machine that rendered it (I saw it) but wouldn't play (in QTpro) on a playback machine attached to a projector. It just showed a white screen. That was odd, since that playback machine had DVCPro Codecs just for this type of playback. However, I figured it was a Codec issue.... probably in the export process.
So took the movie to my laptop (specced as above) and tried to play it in QT. Just a white screen. Huh? I know I have the right codecs. I inspected the movie's properties. Sure enough it's a DVCPro HD movie.
So then I opened my DVCPro demo sequence in FCP....remember I've played with this in FCP dozens of times on this machine.... and I get the message
"codec not found you may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card"
I checked in the ~Library/Quicktime folder and saw the following CODECS
DVCPROHDMuxer.component
DVCPROHDVideoDigitizer.component
DVCPROHDVideoOutputCodec.component
DVCPROHDVideoOutputClock.component
DVCPROHDVideoOutput.component
But no still DVCProHD playback in FCP or QT.
So I deleted all the ~Library/Quicktime codecs and reinstalled QT 7.1.3. No difference.
Then I uninstalled the complete FCP Studio using App Zapper and reinstalled FCP Studio 5.1 from the DVD's. Tried to play the demo DVCPro HD movie...No Difference.
Then I updated FCP 5.1 to 5.1.2. Still no difference. I can't play any DVCProHD material at all!
Then I ran FCP rescue to remove all FCP settings, just in case, and the codecs still seemed to be missing.
Predictably, the DVCPro HD codecs are back in the ~Library/Quicktime folder, but no playback.
It's like the movie made from the Maya stills has destroyed my QT functionality!
Anyone got a clue? I'm at a loss right now! I must be missing something...
Thanks
LeeDVCPROHDMuxer.component
DVCPROHDVideoDigitizer.component
DVCPROHDVideoOutputCodec.component
DVCPROHDVideoOutputClock.component
DVCPROHDVideoOutput.componentI have 6 components in mine. The sixth being "DVCPROCodec.Component" which I don't see in your list. However, my setup is older than yours (v4.5) and I don't know if this has anything to do with this difference. -
So i cannot get any existing outlook appointments to sync to my iPad 2 or my I4. I installed to icould control panel for windows and have everything enabled in it. When i create a even on my ipad it will show up in outlook on my pc. However, none of the existing pc based appointments show up on my i4 or ip2. It's weird because in outlook it shows icalander and has them all. I have tried rebooting my idevices and it did not help. I closed and re opened outlook and that pushed a test event created on ipad to my pc but did not push anything else. I did another test and New appointments created on pc sync to ipad, but still no existing appointments sync. Does anyone know how i can get them to show up?
Hi tz, Thnaks for the input. The settings are the same as my PC, SSL is off and there is no Authentication required; I've check this requirement with Apple and Orange guidelines and this is also what they recommend; however, I'll try with the Authentication on and see what happens....I'll post again later, running out of time now so it could be after the weekend before I get back with an update. Thanks again.

Greetings,
I had some 16mm film transferred to Quick time. The codec is: 1920 x 1080; 23.98 fps; Apple pro res 422. This codec doesn't exist on the import codec list in Final Cut Express. I would appreciate any suggestions as to the proper codec to use. I'm running FCE 4.01. My Mac is 10.7.5
Many thanks,Apple Intermediate Codec is what you want for a codec.
I'm pretty sure that if you download the pro apps Quick Time codecs 1.0.1, they will load into your QT library and MPEG Streamclip can access them. (There is no way for me to test this right now that's practical.)
FCE not only doesn't support Pro Res, it also doesn't support 1080p or 24fps. You may get it to play in a 1080 60i sequence…or not.
I would bring your 1080p24 movie into MPEG Streamclip and reformat it to one that FCE is happy with – say 720p30. It should do a pretty decent job, If you're not happy with the result, consider Compressor 4 @ $49.
Good luck.

!!! DV CODECS decoded !!!
Hi,
I'd like to know what other CODEC formats can be used in a Premiere DV settings (720x480, 1.2) without having to be rendered whenever dropped into the timeline ?
I've tested all that AE 7.0 has to offer in CODEC and found only Microsoft DV an Quicktime DV (in either 720x480 or 720x540) that work.
I'm trying to transcode for offline a huge amount of CINEFORM avi files into something that my assistant editor who don't own CINEFORM can edit with.
The problem is the file size this gives me, is there a smaller CODEC still useable realtime ?
Thank you.
FrédéricHDV is actually smaller if I openned a project and transcoded my files in HDV would the editing be good and fluid or the fact that there's more Group of Frames (GOF) to decode in HDV would slow my machine when trying to edit realtime ?

Determine if Instance of Class exists?
Hello out there :)
could anyone tell me if there is a way to determine if an instance of a specific class exists.
btw my class design does not allow me to use static variables for instance counter or somehting - i am trying to prevent this.
here is my situation:
I have a class in which's constructor i would like to check if an instance of an inherited class exists - of THE inheritet class, that this constructor was called from (i could pass this information via constructor)
and now i only want the constructor to proceed, if there is no instance of this class yet.
thx to everyone who can help me :)mlk wrote:

Let's see, your root class would be:
public class ClassXY
private static boolean instanceExists = false;
public ClassXY() { instanceExists = true; }
final public static boolean instanceExists() { return instanceExists; }
When a object gets GC'ed, should that still return exists? :)Ah! You're right! So the code would be:
public class ClassXY
private static boolean instanceCount = 0;
public ClassXY() { instanceCount++; }
final public static boolean instanceExists() { return instanceCount > 0; }
protected void finalize() { instanceCount--; }
}There might be a threading issue with that, too; it's been a while since I dealt with finalization.
One question for the original poster: do you want the constructor to fail if an instance already exists? If that's the case, the code above can be simplified further.
