480i out of my 6416 STB?

I'm trying to figure out my options for getting my Toshiba HDD DVDr with S-video input to record full screen HD (at SD resolutions I know).
My options are:
1. add a component to S-video converter (needs 480i input, about $139)
2. add a component to S-video converter (accepts anything, about $230)
3. abandon the Toshiba and buy a DVDr from eBay that has component inputs (maybe $50)
4. live with the black bars all around
Question:
    Can I even set the 6416 to give me 480i out of the component outs?  The more I think about that, the more I don't think I really want to.  My TV uses HDMI from the STB.  I'd want to keep that at 1081i.
Any help would be appreciated.

This actually isn't difficult. At least on my 6416, the S-Video output jack is active even in HD channels, in fact I have a JVC S-VHS VCR connected that way.
Just run an S-VHS cable from the back of the 6416 to the S-Video input on the DVR. S-video isn't 480i, and it isn't component, but S-Video is capable of about 400 line resolution. By contrast, SD over the air is limited to about 330 lines. So while S-Video isn't quite as good as 480i, it is very close, and a lot better than composite video.
At any rate, I can watch HD channels as SD full screen by routing the s-video signal through the VCR and into the S-Video input on my TV. I can also record them as SD on the S-VHS VCR, so there is no reason to think you cannot do the same thing with a DVD recorder.
So you should be able to record HD TV to your DVD recorder via the S-Video output on the 6416 while watching HD TV.

  • I need a HD DVR 6416 STB

    I'm not sure how many Verizon employees use these forums or if any consumers know of any solutions to my problem but I figured I'd give this a try.
    I recently purchased a Samsung theater consisting of the LED UN46B600, BluRay BD-P1600 and SoundBar HT-WS1R. All devices can use a technology called Anynet+. Follow this link for more information. In short, Anynet+ allows every Samsung device to be controlled by one remote and putting a DVD in the player will cause the input to switch and sound system to switch input (if applicable). This is especially important to me because the Fios remote does not have a compatible code with the BluRay player and the Fios remote cannot adjust the TV's menu options (which I frequently do for picture quality).
    The Anynet+ feature will not work with the Motorola HD DVR QIP7216 because the box interferes with the HDMI-CEC signal. The purpose of this post is to not only notify consumers and staff of this issue but to see if anyone knows where I can get a LEGAL HD DVR 6416 STB. This older STB is completely compatible with Anynet+ so therefore, I need it. I currently have a Verizon employee who is calling retail stores but I am sure there are far too many to contact them all. If any of you know where I can get the QIP6416 or have any ideas for a fix, please let me know.
    As a side note, I would just like the to say that the Verizon staff have been very helpful over these past few days. This is not
    a typical problem and they have really worked hard to find a solution. They have even provided me with a free 3 month trial of HBO/Cinemax. I have been very happy with the service since I switched from Comcast, I do not want to have to switch back because of this.
    P.S. A universal remote is not a solution

    All of Verizon cable boxes are part of a controlled inventory which means that you can not pick up their DVR's from outside third party retailers or off the internet from other customers.   Once you have the cable box, Verizon needs to activate the cable box for use, and if it's not part of the inventory or has been reported as unrecoverable or missing or stolen, then they won't activate it.
    The best way to get a 6416 is through a field technician.  They are the only ones that can sift around looking for a 6416 model.  A verizon rep calling on your behalf to the various VZ stores is the next best thing, but other than that, over the phone tech support and customer service simply check mark DVR and the system indiscriminately sends whatever DVR is in inventory.
    So if in inventory there are a bunch of 7216;s there is nothing that a vz employee can check mark that says to grab a 6416 instead, and so if you have a Field tech or a vz employee making calls to the stores for you (you can also get a list of stores online and make some calls yourself too) then that is the best options that you can excercise.
    stores can be found online here, https://www22.verizon.com/Residential/Templates/sas/sas_StoreLocator.aspx  but make sure you call.   A lot of stores don't do repair style exchanges for reasons like you're describing, so if they do it will have to be on an individual case basis, they normally will refer you to call the repair desk   888 553 1555

  • IR Repeater for QIP-6416?

    Hi,
    I'm looking for a compatible IR repeater for the QIP-6416 STB.  Every solution I come across online does not support this model STB.
    Alternatively, anyone know the possibility of Verizon updating my box to the newer models?

    Very interesting background info.
    Wonder if you are aware of all of this
    This site might eventually lead you to a solution.
    Good Luck with your project.

  • Disk 2 taking hours

    I finally got my video install completed - I swapped out a nicer AGP STB card for an older PCI Matrox card, and that was good.
    I started installing disk 2 about 2 hours ago. I opened a terminal window, and a few files systems seem to be getting used. The CD-ROM LED is lit constantly. I see space getting consumed in /var, /var/tmp, and /tmp, but very little.
    The install screen has the word "extracting" on it. But, the progress wheel is moving very slowly.
    The system in question does have an old CD-ROM drive.
    Does this sound familiar? Think it will ever finish? Will I need to replace this old CD-ROM drive?
    Thanks!

    Fixed - After replacing the CD-ROM hardware, I discovered that the CD-ROM media was bad. I re-burned disk 2, and all is moving along well.
    However, in the process I found an interesting piece of information. I re-downloaded disk 2 - but the CD I cut of that wouldn't work because the version was updated.
    U5 vs U6.
    I now wonder what was updated in U6. Is it documented someplace what changes between the builds?

  • Optical Audio setup?

    Does anyone know if you need to set up the optical audio on the 6416 stb in order for it to work?
    In addition to the HDMI handshake issue now I cannot use my Yamaha home theatre because when I converted to component I had to use the (2) sound outputs on the stb.
    I am also checking with Yamaha because when I connect the one end of the optical cennector to the Verizon stb the other connection lights up, but when connected to the receiver the other connection is not illuminated. I don't know if that has any bearing.......................
    All I do know is that these Motorola STB's (especially the DVR) are garbage and need to be replaced with something that works.
    I appreciate any imput.

    This may or may not work for you, but my old Sony receiver assigns the optical audio input as a DVD input source only.  So I have to switch to DVD on my receiver in order to get sound from my STB (have the optical going directly from the STB to the Sony receiver).  Is it possible your receiver may assign optical audio to a different source name.  May be worth a try switching to see what happens.  If that's not it, then unfortunately I have no idea with my limited technical skills.  Thought it might be worth a try.

  • What is Inside Wire Maintenance and is it really necessary

    I'm getting Charged 9.99 a month for Inside Wire Maintenance.  I just want to be clear on what it really is. I've been reading that without this "insurance" Verizon would charge me a ridiculous amount of money to fix any problems if it were a problem with the wires inside my apartment, say or faulty jack or whatever....but if it's anything else say outisde, i heard that verizon don't charge for this.
    BUT most of the time when the tech comes, it's never a problem with anything inside my house, it's always a problem with the small box that contains the copper wire connections (not the NID box but the other small box  which i don't know the name) outside the yard, in the backyard of the building.   If it's problem with the box in the backyard of the building, then technically it's not an inside wire problem correct? so Verizon should not charge me right?
    This means i don't really need inside wire maintenance correct?
    IF so How do i go about REmoving this service?

    Verizon charges if there is a problem inside ($90-$100) that isn't caused by their equipment. An example is if there's an issue and they have to replace your coax cable inside or change out a wall outlet. A charge would apply. If a problem is on their end such as they find out its the dvr/stb causing issues or the ONT a charge would not apply. In some cases if they show up and find no issues at all them a fee might apply.
    Is it worth the $9.99 a month? IMO no. The chances of an issue going on with something not on their end is rare.
    It would be cheaper to pay a one time fee to fix anything if ever needed then pay $9.99 a month which ends up costing more in the end.
    If you want to remove it just call them 1-800 Verizon.
    Also, considering their terms are always changing, you can also ask them about when a technician fee would apply.

  • Problem replacing characters

    Hi,
    I'm trying to replace a # with a in a unix environment using a String.replace, but unix won't recognise the . It just prints out a ? if I print to screen or a \243 if I print to a file. If I move this file back to windows, it contains . I'm very confused. Please help.
    Thanks.
    Oh, here's a copy of the test code of where I'm upto at the moment after alot of messing about. Feel free to disregard this code if I'm barking completely up the wrong tree.
        public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
            StringBuffer stb = new StringBuffer("#1234");
            int indx = -1;
            while ((indx = stb.toString().indexOf("#")) != -1) {
                ByteArrayOutputStream baos = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
                baos = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
                baos.write((new String("").getBytes("UTF-8")));
                String st = baos.toString("UTF-8");
                System.out.println("st = " + st);
                stb.replace(indx, indx+"#".length(), st);
            System.out.println("buffer: " + stb.toString());
            //this is just here to see what happens if I write
            //the  to a file
            FileOutputStream fos = new FileOutputStream("file.txt");
            fos.write((new String("").getBytes("UTF-8")));
            fos.flush();
            fos.close();
        }

    For character replacement, it's more efficient to use:
    str = str.replace('#', ''); // where str is a string
    You don't need UTF-8 encoding if the Unicode characters are in the ANSI range: U+0000 - U+00FF. Just use the default encoding. When you view the file, make sure select a font that has the glyph for that charater. On Windows, Tahoma, Courier New, or Times New Roman would suffice.
    For those beyond ANSI, then UTF-8 comes into play. Use OutputStreamWriter(fos, "UTF8") when write to file. Check http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/i18n/text/stream.html for usage. Win9x/Me Notepad can't read UTF-8 encoded files, but WinNT/2K/XP can.

  • "Timed Out" message trying to play .mpg files on my STB

    I recently downloaded the new version of Media Manager that plays videos.  I have a lot of .mpg files from home movies taken over the years.  They all play in the Media Manager on my PC, and the thumbnails show up on my TV with the Home Media Center STB.
    But when I hit "OK" to play an .mpg clip, it first says "wait for up to 15 seconds for file to load" and then says "timed out; try again".
    The Media Player menu that shows on my TV has a "FiOS Sample Video" (a 20 second clip that starts playing about 3 seconds) that plays without any problem.  The home movie .mpg clip I tried to play is a 12 second clip, but it always times out.
    My PC is six feet from the Verizon wireless router, but I don't know what the bandwidth is to the STB.  My Internet service is 20/5, but when I test it I get 10/2.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    i heard you have to rename certain files to play.  try renaming it to mpeg instead of mpg

  • Standard def STB repeatedly blacks out for a second or 2

    A site search on "black out" does not turn up a similar issue, of course it may be my search skills are lacking.
    New subsciber since Sep 2010.   I have 3 boxes, 2 standard QIP2500 phase 3 (basement/MBR) and 1 hi-def (LR). Hi def TV in MBR, standard in other 2.  Both standards would on occassion 'black out' for just a second or 2 ever since original install. No problem with the hi-def. One standard is wired with coax, one with s-video, the hi-def with HDMI.  When the black out occurs, the screen will freeze for an instant, then the screen goes black, then it comes back. The information on the box does not black out, the TVs don't power-off and restart. It's just the screen goes blank and then comes back. It happens without any seeming warning, and will happen at any time of day. Sometimes it will happen repeatedly, sometimes it won't happen for a long time.  Both boxes have been repeatedly reset and rebooted with no improvement.  During one tech call the tech had me relocate one of the standard boxes to the hi-def location to isolate that it wasn't a location (in-house cable) problem. I thought it curious since it was happening at 2 different locations but went through the drill anyway.  The relocated standard worked for a few minutes, then went black for a second as the problem does.  Plugging the high-def back in resolved the issue at that location. The tech said he would send 2 new standard boxes. The replacement boxes have not resolved the issue.  Any suggestions?

    if it's doing that on two different boxes using both coax and s-video then I think that leaves a possibility of the coax.  that would be a unusual symptom of a bad coax/splitter but try this.
    Wait for it to start acting up - when it starts acting up, stay tuned to that station, and hit your menu > customer support > in home agent > network diagnostics and click ok to start.
    check the video signal using that menu selection.  after it's done running it will give you a general message like "you're video signals are not in the optimal range"     after you see that, hit info and then look at the SNR DB   it should give you a number.
    32-36 is optimal, below that is questionable.
    If it is below that then it's probably going to be a problem with the splitter at your house, and you would either replace it yourself, or call verizon to replace it.  be sure to tell them the DB

  • 3 Out Of 4 STBs Do Not Work And I Cannot Get Any Help At All.

    Last night at 10:30 the 3 7100s stopped working, they are stuck at Starting Up One Moment Please.  My 7232 is working just fine, so is my Phone and Internet.  So I call in and I am prompted through the exact same steps I have already taken, unplug box, unplug coax, turn on, turn off.  Nothing, same result.  She then states there isn't a signal from the boxes I need to locate the splitters in the house and disconnect them.  I say it is after midnight and pouring, as they are all outside.  Repeated this sequence 3 times before I had to raise my voice, "They are all outside where it is pouring."  Her reply is there is nothing she can do until I disconnect them and reconnect, NOTHING, click.
    So after work today I come home, disconnect every coax lead there is, unplug the boxes, unplug their coaxes, hook everything up and still Stuck on the Starting Up Screen.  I tried 2 chats and each one is exactly the same, unplug, plug in.....  Then it is the whole house reset, that drops connection and the chat and rep are gone.  Now, mind you, they have my cell number because  they ask for it in case of a disconnect, but they never use it.  Nothing has changed, only the 7232 works and I am getting ready for another phone call, to go over the exact same script again and again.
    You wonder why a customer is already angry when we finally talk to someone, why do you think?  You want your payment for services not rendered, a service call is out of the question and your phone reps. don't have a clue.  All they can do is read the script and repeat the same steps that have been done already.  Isn't there a record of every call and chat and can't they see it and then use their common sense and try to deal with a problem?
    So we are stuck with 3 boxes that aren't working, apparently they are not getting a signal so sending another one won't fix this either.  Seems something is seriously wrong but no one can help.

    I was having the same problem.. TV went out on wednesday, called verizon and was on the phone until midnight doing the stupid little unplug **bleep**, but the TV just kept on that red fios screen. They said they would send out a new DVR box to replace the one I have (mind you I just started with verizon on the 18th of July). I get the new DVR on Friday and at last I plug it in, get all excited to watch the NFL preseason games and of course, the **bleep** doesn't work, just a black screen. I call verizon again and on hold for an hour before I had to leave. Come back, screen is still on black and call them and wait another thirty minutes before its answered, they did everything on their end for trying to manually activate the box, and still nothing..... he then gave me a reference number for the technician scheduled to come the next day (Saturday) from 8am to 9pm, of course i wasn't happy with the open schedule but I sucked it up and dealt with it, canceled my plans for Saturday so I can be home when the verizon tech shows up and find myself calling verizon at 930pm asking where the hell this tech was, they told me the office is closed and they open at 8am tomorrow. Well its tomorrow and I call them back, just to find out that its not open until MONDAY at 8am......................................................................................................................................................................................................... and so now I have to wait yet another day to try and get my **bleep** fixed that I'm paying for and havent even had a month.... yea good luck getting me to pay verizon

  • Output from QIP 6416-2

    Frustrating... We have always had to use an RF modulator between our QIP 6416-2 and our TV, but having just purchased a Philips 32PFL3504D HDTV, I wanted to try using component out; no luck.
    I have looked at the wiring diagrams online time and time again. It looks like I should just be able to go straight from component video/audio out to the TV; on the TV itself, I have tried software settings for both antenna and cable input, but the channel scan can detect nothing.
    I hate having to use the RF modulator and being stuck in standard def! Any suggestions? Maybe I need to drop some coin on a HDMI cable... but since we were never able to get signal any other way (for example, by S-Video) before, maybe we just have a bad STB?
    Will be happy to provide more details if necessary... TIA for your suggestions!

    Connecting the component cables to your TV should work just fine. Depending on your TV, some do not accept 480i and will give you a blank screen. Check what formats your TV accepts and with it working on the modulator you can switch the output to a format your TV supports. Also the channel scan will do nothing for finding the Component Video inputs of your new tv. Check the TV instructions on how to set up inputs and switch between them.
    I hope the helps.

  • DVR/STB Troubleshooting

    I have been having some issues with my service or DVR since the new guide/firmware update last year.
    The first issue is that an average of 50% of my DVR recordings will have a glitch in them:
    Jogging forward or fast forward causes the program to end and return to the recording menu.
    Not channel specific or time specific; could be any recording.
    Steps taken to resolve this issue:
    Auto fix STB issues under In Home Agent - no change.
    Auto fix DVR issues under In Home Agent - no change.
    Power cycling STB - no change.
    Called into support and they sent out a replacement DVR - issue seemed to be resolved for around a month but reoccurred.
    The above process was repeated with the new DVR/STB with no change.
    I have also tried turning Program Chaptering On/Off and the problem still occurs regardless of this setting. One thing that I have noticed is that during the affected recordings the information bar will often disappear completely or have the incorrect recording time (IE when playing a 30 minute recording and pressing Info button the program will show 10:00/1:30:00 or 10:00/0:00:00 as if the DVR does not know how long the recording is actually). The jog forward or fast forward causing the program to end usually occurs after 10 minutes of record time. This issue is very annoying as it defeats part of the purpose of the DVR and being able to skip through the program.
    The second issue that I am having is intermittent issues with what seems like signal quality and delays changing channels:
    Turning the DVR on and changing channels usually results in anywhere from a 30 sec to 2 minute delay (DVR stays on the selected channel or goes to a black screen until the DVR processes the channel change and goes to the selected channel).
    Seems to occur when changing from a local channel to a premium or HD channel or vice versa (3 to the HD 503 or any channel to 70 or 76).
    At times the signal seems to drop out and I get a lot of audio freezing and some artifacting in the picture.
    The channel change/audio skip or freeze usually occur once or twice an hour.
    Steps taken to resolve this issue:
    I did a search and found that some users had success changing or turning off the SD override feature, I have tried Off, 480i, 480p and Stretched - no impact on channel change delay or audio/video freezing.
    Auto fix STB/DVR with In Home Agent - no change.
    These issues are very frustrating and hard to pin down from a diagnostic standpoint. Each time I call into support when the issue is occurring the Menu Diagnostics or STB/DVR reset throws a red herring in that the problem seems solved until the next day when the problems start again or I have a DVR full of recordings that I cannot fast forward through. No offense but I am tried of going through Level 1 phone support and running through the book resolutions only to solve the problem temporarily. If anyone can shed some more advanced light on this issue, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Edit for formatting.

    What you are describing in both scenarios is a signal disruption. Please unscrew the coax cord from both ends (from the DVR and from the wall). Make sure the tips are good and straight. Screw both back on. If you are still having troubles, then try using a different coax cord all together. If you are still having troubles, it might be a problem with the wall jack or the main splitter. For further assistance with those, please send me a private message.

  • DVR/Stb Functionality

    I am new to this forum, so I don't if this has been discussed. I was with Comcast since Lord knows and have used their DVR for at least 4 years. One feature I got used to and loved was being able to pause live TV and "swap" to the other tuner to watch another show. I could then pause the other tuner (or not) and swap back to the first and continue watching from where it was paused. I have yet to figure out how to do this with the FIOS DVR. If i have something paused and change the channel and change it back it is live.
    Another question I have is it seems like i can't keep something paused for more than an hour before it unpauses itself and returns live. If anything, I would prefer it to remain paused a little longer than one hour or resume from where it is paused. you have very little room for error.
    One last question, how do I get to the settings of the STBs? I have an HDTV that use to switch from 4:3 to 16:9 accordingly with the channels with the STB. But when I got another one moved it to another TV, it now stretches 4:3 to widescreen and I can't stand it. My wife doesn't mind, but i have to change the display manually on the tv whenever we go from HD to SD.

    To swap paused tuners you need to use the LAST button on the remote. Pause the channel you are watching, select other channel you want to watch, pause the second channel, now hit LAST and you should return to the paused first channel.
    The 1 hour limitation is due to the buffer size on the DVR (which coincidentally is 1 hour).  It would make sense if the buffer is an hour it won't hold pause any longer than that.
    The last issues sounds like a setting in the TV.  If you have to go and "change the display manually on the TV" it is not the STB, but a setting in the TV.  The other possibility is that the 4:3 override in the STB has changed.  You can try playing with the different modes (OFF, 480i, 480p, or stretch).

  • Audio Drop Outs Last Night on "Goldmember" in HD

    Hello Techies,  All in all, seeing as I was the chump who had to shell out $600 to get the first gen DirecTV dishes, FiOS is absolutely awesome. I have 2 HD STBs and 1 HD DVR, all Motorola. I have been a devoted FiOS fan since. The HD STB is the QIP 6416-2, the other two STB's are vintage 2009 w/HDMI. Every piece of AV gear in my home is Sony (ES when available), the TV giving me the trouble is the one watched the most, so I can't be sure if these issues are plaguing the other two Sony XBR's or not. The TV that lost the sound intermittently last night while "Goldmember" was playing in HD is a pre-1080p Sony, a KV32HS510, which is a tube type set with the 1080i DVI HD input. During "Goldmember" the sound would drop out for approx 5-7 seconds, then come back on. This occurred for the 70 or so minutes I was watching it. Did anyone else have this same problem? Not to muddy the issue, but very infrequently the screen will turn to a white snowy granulated appearance, but the audio will be unaffected. I simply reboot the STB and everything returns to normal. I was also getting some image pixelation during the last HD showing of "Clash Of The Titans" as well. The TV/STB combo that is exhibiting these problems is the duo furthest from the FiOS router. None of these issues are all that important, but I have checked for loose connections, gone over my TV and STB settings to verify nothing had changed, and all seems well. Any ideas from the Tech Gurus would be most appreciated.  FiOS rating IMHO, out of a possible 100 = 99.  P.S. I've been at this high end audio and PC stuff for a long time, ( anyone remember MS-DOS, and the sanity testing WFW 3.11?), so please don't hesitate throwing some ideas around involving intricate fixes.  Thanks In Advance, Apologies For The Verbosity... Mac

    While it was playing did you test the channel on other TV's in your house? Also have you had other audio dropouts on that or other channels?

  • New Subscriber 72xx STB

    My installation was just completed yesterday and the first thing I noticed was the difference in picture quality compared to my DirecTV service.  For me, the DirecTV was far superior, especially in non-HD.  So, I started reading the forums to find a workaround and have seen that the 1.6.1 software update may improve?
    I really don' t want to wait around for a software update just to get me back to the picture quality I had last week.  I have also seen that the new 72xx STB can fix it without the software update.  IIn addition, the DirecTV had support for 1080p which evidently is only supportable on the 72xx.
    So, has anyone been able to replace the 6416/6200 with a 72xx?  If not, I am considering cancelling the Fios TV part until this is resolved. I'd rather spend the next few weeks watching a decent SD picture and reconnect when the updates are out.  In addition, since my TVs are both 1080p, I really don't like the fact that I won't be able to view 1080p simply because the installer happened to give me the older model receivers.

    I do know that the DirecTV now supports 1080p for movies.  I have yet to see one, but it is a new feature as of ~2 weeks ago.
    Not arguing, but I can't find anything indicating this on DirecTV's web site.  I know I have seen ads from Dish for 1080p on their download psedo-on-demand.
    Just wanted to point out that there are other issues with the 72xx series.  And you left out that it has more memory and a faster processor .  As for E-SATA and MPEG-4 capability I am well aware of those options with the key word being option.  Verizon does not currently support E-SATA and there is no proposed date for availability and nothing is carried in MPEG-4 (and not likely to be for a long time due to all the MPEG-2 only equipment already in the field).
