480x270 still squeezed

I'm experimenting with Compressor right now, but am wondering about a setting. I need to upload my movie to IMDb and their parameters are Quicktime 480x360 at 30fps. Of course 480x360 results in a squeezed image so I'm trying to output my original 16x9 file (980x720) to a Quicktime movie file to the suggested 480x270 size. Even after padding the top and bottom 45, I'm still getting an image that is slightly squeezed. Am I missing something? Thanks!

i was told back in 6.02 that i needed to do this in photoshop anyway. it's been my workflow. perhaps something that can be submitted to fcp suggestions.

  • Widescreen video being squeezed!

Working with the trial version, I'm importing a 16x9 .mov from After Effects and Elements 9 is squeezing the video 4x3.  Is there a way to correctly import/display 16x9?  Or is this a trial version limitation?  I've started a widescreen project and it still squeezes my clip.

    Welcome to the forum.
What are the full details on the AE Comp Export?
What is the Project Preset, chosen at New Project? They should match 100%.
If they do match, but PrE is still missing the PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio) flag, then Intrepret Footage should force PrE to do this.
The limitation on the trial is with some modules, that cannot be activated, regarding the formats, like AVCHD, and then the watermark that the trial adds to the Export/Share.
    Good luck,

  • Mountain Lion and external monitor

Hi, Im running my MBP with a external EIZO monitor with 1600 x 1200. Before I upgraded to ML this worked just fine. But when i upgraded to ML my external monitor wont show the resulution properly. "1600x1200" is selected but the screen is still squeezed with black bars over and under it.

May also want to upgrade to 10.8.2 as well. One of the focus areas on that upgrade was graphics.

  • Full widescreen on 16:9, letterboxed on 4:3

Just finished my first DVDSP project (a daunting task after making the leap from iDVD) and worked my way through producing an anamorphic project that plays 16:9 on a widescreen. Problem is it's squeezed on 4:3. I thought setting the display mode to "16:9 letterbox" would set it to play widescreen on a 16:9 player, and letterboxed on a 4:3 player.
A response in a recent post I came across suggested "setting the track to letterbox." Two questions: First, does this reduce the quality of playback in 16:9; And second, how do you do this - set the track to letterbox.
Thanks in advance for your help. - Mark

    Hello Mark,
I am experiencing your problem with 16:9 aspect being squeezed on a 4:3 TV Have tried setting 16:9 letterbox for both track and menus but the problem is not solved, as my movie is still squeezed on an old 4:3 television.
Wondered if your solution worked and if you had any other solutions
    Would appreciate any help.

  • 16:9 workflow

I am not able to maintain the aspect ratio of a 16:9 clip al the way though exporting. At the end I get a 16:9 still squeezed clip that has been croped from top an d bottom to maintain such aspect ratio. I've tryed it all. I've cahnged the project from 16:9 to 4:3. Tryed exporting with custon ratios and still... I can't get iMovie either to unsqueeze to a proper 16:9 or to stop squeezing the footage when i edit it.
its my first time using imovie'08 and also my first time dealing with a 16:9 clips. previous experiences had been with letterboxed 4:3.
    Thanks

The source material is a perfect 16:9 (853x48)0 clip, not anamorphic. It only gets squeezed when imported to imovie.
If by this you mean it displays "perfectly" in the QT Player, GarageBand, iMovie HD, iTunes, etc., remember that these applications display the content using the "current size" display setting and not the "anamorphic flag" as iMovie '08 does. Also, I might point out that 853.33x480 is an NTSC anamorphic display as opposed to a letterboxed 640x360 embedded within a 640x480 display. DV and DVD VOBs store data in a 720x480 data matrix whether it is anamorphic, 4:3, or or letterboxed. Applications that read the anamorphic flag use it to display content with the proper aspect ratio. Those applications that do not use the flag, use the "current size" display settings to display the proper aspect ratio. If your file is actually encoded as anamorphic but has no valid anamorphic flag, then iMovie '08 will treat it as a 4:3 encoded file as far as preview and export is concerned.

  • Preview Application Resizing Problem

    Preview Application Resizing Problem
Microsoft platforms have two significant advantages. The first is the concept of an operating system that can function with hardware that ranges from cellular phones to desktop computers. The second is that Microsoft has excellent software development tools
for creating and testing computer programs.
Software compatibility across hardware platforms requires not only meeting CPU and memory requirements. Application programs must be able to automatically adjust Window and control sizes to meet the needs of available window sizes, video display unit sizes
and screen resolutions, switching between vertical and horizontal viewing, vertical and horizontal scrolling, changes in font sizes , and variations in the available screen space due to usage of vertical and horizontal toolbars.
Software developers must be careful that resizing doesn’t squeeze controls too close together or make them so small that they cannot be finger or stylus selected when used with touch screens.
Some of the required automatic resizing options are provided by the Microsoft software compilers and the Windows operating system.  Softgroup Component’s “.NET  Forms Resize” is an example of one of the third party applications that provide advanced
    resizing functionality.
Many of the resizing functions are programmer options and, if not properly enabled, an application may not have the required resizing functionality. At the current state of the art, application programs are highly variable in their capability to do the “intelligent
resizing” that is required to handle different display environments.
A case in point is the Microsoft Preview Application for Windows 10. When entering lengthy comments, the send button becomes positioned off the end of the program window. It is possible to scroll to the button, but the display automatically resets when scroll
is released. The result is that the text cannot be sent. You can try a "blind" TAB to the SEND button. This appeared to work after several tries, but the comment was apparently not received,

  • Converting 16X9 .dv to .avi, gets letterboxed at left and right

    Hey Guys,
Anyone know how to retain 16X9 from .dv to .avi using MPEG Streamclip?
I'm using V1.9.2... tried different settings 5 times now... can't get it to stop squeezing the picture on the left and right.
Also, when I play new file back in RealPlayer (for Mac) the sound is missing. In MPEG Streamclip, it's there. (?)
    Thanks!

    Hey Guys,
Thanks Nick and Studio X for your help. Definitely using it to navigate through this.
Results so far: The aspect ratio issue is still not solved. To refresh... this is a 16X9 .dv file and I'm trying to retain that aspect ratio as I convert it to a PC playable file.
    Following Nick's suggestion... I
    1) Opened the original file (.dv file) in Quicktime and saved it with "Clean" as the chosen Presentation conform choice. Quicktime made a new file with the .mov extension (I noticed picture degradation at this point). Knowing I still have to get to an .avi file (per Nick's suggestion) I then
    2) Encoded this .mov file as an .avi file with MPEG Streamclip, then to test I played the resulting .avi in RealPlayer for Mac (I'm slowly thinking using RealPlayer for Mac is not really a test, based on Studio X's comments, and FYI, even though I have WMP for Mac it won't open these files... not sure if that's expected or not).
Anyway, in RealPlayer the aspect ratio was still squeezed left and right (faces look tall). Playing the resulting file in MPEG Streamclip also has the same results... video is squeezed on the sides.
Another FYI... I did find a backdoor, quick and dirty solution in case anyone wants to know:
In the FILE menu of MPEG Streamclip, you choose a file type to export to. In the resulting window there are settings to adjust. To the right of the ZOOM setting is the X/Y setting, where you can type in any number. I tried a couple numbers to narrow it down... and 1.23 seems to be just right. This forces the aspect ratio of the new file (at least when tested in RealPlayer for Mac) to have the "shape" of 16X9. Don't know what the inadvertent consequences of doing this are, though. I'm sure this messes something up somewhere!
I will pay for Flipformac and let everyone know the results.
Gotta say, in 2010 it blows my mind there isn't a file type everyone in the world can just play, without these kind of issues. I feel like it's still 1995. This is like different CD player manufacturers allowing only certain types of CDs or DVDs to play in their CD or DVD players. We didn't choose to pain the consumers with that... we made CDs playable in all CD players. It makes sense!

  • Am I missing out with 98SE?

So am I missing out on XP, or does 98SE still squeeze all of the speed and functionality that XP gets? I just dont like XP much - its too non-involved for the user. I'm someone who likes the backup of the command prompt, and who has some old games and programs that he'd like to use still, but I've heard of so many problems with old software I thought I wouldnt bother. Now I am having so many problems with this new delta lsr I'm wondering if it was never designed to work with 98. That said, surely it should work with both? Didnt think mobos were 'platform aimed'
    JB

I have both Win98SE (on IDE1) and WinXP Professional SP1 (on RAID-0 array) on my dual-boot machine at home, and Win2000 Professional at work.  I can't say anything at all about WinXP Home Edition, other than it's a stripped-down version of the Professional version.  Maybe XP Home is not as good as the Pro version as a result...?
I can't say I've encountered any major operational differences between Win2000 Pro and WinXP Pro, other than the fancy default interface on WinXP Pro (I've since changed it to the older Win2000 style interface, which I like better).  Both have been more than stable for over a year.  No real big differences here, other than increased PnP ability of WinXP Pro.  Both have been extremely stable.
My work PC and notebook both have Win2000 Professional, and have been absolutely stable 8 hours a day.  However, since they're not my PC's, no hardware tweaking has been done.
At home, I have been running WinXP Pro SP1 for 13 months now with absolutely no hint of an OS-related problem.  In fact, when I installed WinXP Pro SP1, my MB was a K7T266Pro2-RU with a Palomino 1800+.  I did the C37 mod to allow running a 2400+ Tbred on this MB, and that didn't faze WinXP Pro one bit.
After a while, the X7T266Pro2-RU wouldn't run my 2400+ at 133fsb anymore, no matter what I tried.  I looked for a MB replacement, and settled on the K3T-Ultra2-R, because it was the last MSI board I could find that featured a Promise RAID controller that still had TWO additional IDE ports.  I swapped in the new MB, hooked up my existing RAID-0 array, inserted the WinXP Pro CD, and "repaired" the existing WinXP installation on the array to account for the changed MB.  WinXP Pro handled it like a champ!  After it was done, all my old settings and applications were still intact.  However, all Windows Updates/Patches had to be reapplied, since the OS repair wipes those out.  Regardless, it went quite smooth, and it's still operating stable as ever.
IMHO, you can't go bad with either Win2000 Pro or WinXP Pro.

  • Problems using the letterbox filter

    Hello,
I am having a problem compressing from Final Cut via Compressor into an Mpeg-1 file. I shot (and edited) in 16:9 but the Mpeg-1 files turn out squeezed up in 4:3.
I was advised that the letterbox filter would be a way round it but when I go into the Inspector window and eventually find a way to stop all the settings being greyed out, when I change them and save them, including selecting letterbox filter, then submit the job, nothing is any different. The finished mpeg is still squeezed into 4:3 with no letterbox.
Any advice that would help me solve this problem? Unfortunately I don’t know Compressor very well (as is probably obvious) and don’t find it at all easy to work out.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Sasha

If you're looking at a setting in the Inspector, you're looking at one of two things; the original setting from the "Settings" window-- this one is not modifiable-- or the modifiable copy of that setting that you're using on your asset (the video you're compressing, in the batch window). Click on the setting over your video in the batch window to work with the modifiable version.
A good "basics of Compressor" tutorial might benefit you. Apple has a few on their website.

  • Exporting 16:9 clip

how can I export a 16:9 clip? I know this sounds like a dumb question but I have a 16:9 project and everything was shot taken a panasonic hvx200 camera and edited in a NTSC anamorphic sequence. When I export it the mov looks 4:3, everything is soo think and skinny. How can I export to regular size 16:9?

I was not able to solve the problem even by changing the properties of Quicktime to producction. I imported footage on a .mov 16:9 (853x 480) into iMovie '08, edited and i have not been able to export an unsqueezed 16:9 clip. Its either a 4:3 sqeezed or a 16:9 squeezed and croped in wich the top an bottom are croped to maintain 16:9 but the figures are still squeezed. Does anybody have an idea what i'm doing wrong?
    Thanks

  • Hard Drive recovery software

A few days ago my iBook started up to the blank apple logo screen and wouldn't go any further. The hard drive was also making very loud noises and sounded like it was spinning extra fast. I called Apple and because of the extended Logic Board warranty program I will be able to send it in for repairs even though it's no longer under warranty. What they told me though was to back up my files since they may have to erase the hard drive.
That's where the problem comes in...
I know it was a stupid thing to do but I never backed up my files. I have some stuff on this computer that I would really like to recover. I found that if I let it rest for long enough and unplugged the power source (leaving running only on the battery) it would start up very slowly every once in a while but every time I tried to copy the files it would freeze again and I would have to try again.
I decided to bring my laptop over to a friend's house who also has an apple computer (a macbook) to try and put it into target disk mode and transfer the files that way. When I plugged it into the macbook it said there was a problem reading the disk. I started disc utilities on the macbook and tried to use disk first aid to repair it. It took hours and finally, when it got to the end, it said it was unable to repair it (one of the things that came up was "Invalid Directory Item Count. It should be..." and then different numbers like "0 instead of 14" and "17 instead of 54") I thought that I would just have to do it the slow way and hope that one time it stays working long enough to copy them all. When I turned it on again, however, the blinking question mark folder icon came up meaning now it could no longer locate the hard drive. The thing is when I use target disc mode to plug it into the macbook it still recognizes that an external drive has been plugged in (in the disc first aid it shows up right next to the macbook internal drive and under info it knows how large the drive is, etc.) it just says that it can't read it (under SMART status it says "not supported").
So here's where my two questions come in:
    1) I am unable to boot a disc using the "c" button while starting up. Does that mean that if I buy some sort of recovery software like DiscWarrior it won't even be able to start? I'd like to know because I don't want to spend $100 on software if it won't even be able to try to fix the problem.
    2) If I send it in to Apple to get fixed, what are the chances that they'll clear the hard drive? Is it standard procedure to begin the repair or is it only a last resort? Also, does anyone think that the Logic Board is the problem or is it something else?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
What version of the OS are you running (or trying to run) on it?
It sounds like it is quite possible that your hard drive is the problem, although it could be both the hard drive AND the logic board.
Some of the new logic boards are only Panther compatible, so if you are running 10.3 there is a better chance that they won't have to blank the drive (at least, that's what I was told). I was running Panther, and mine came back three times with the hard drive data intact. But you definitely can't count on it.
Try starting up this way, first in Safe Mode.
If the iBook is on, turn it off. Let it rest overnight (or at least several hours).
Pick it up in your left hand and squeeze the case to the left of the trackpad between your palm and left thumb.
Still squeezing, push the power button. Do not let up the pressure on the case.
As the startup chime is ending, hold down the Shift key. Keep holding it down until you see the Apple logo and the progress indicator that looks like a spinning gear. Then you can let up the Shift key, but DO NOT LET UP THE PRESSURE ON THE CASE.
If this works, you will see your normal desktop. When you do, shut down normally, still keeping pressure on the case. Once it is shut down, you can quit squeezing the case.
Allow the iBook to rest several hours before trying to start up in FireWire Target Disk Mode with your friend's MacBook as the Host computer and your iBook as the Target. Again, keep pressure on the case to the left of the trackpad as you attempt the FireWire transfer. Do not let up, or it will freeze again (if it has the logic board problem).
If it will not start up using this procedure, it is likely the hard drive at fault.

  • HP scanjet 4600 Driver for snow?

    Hi all,
Does anyone know if the HP scanjet 4600 has a driver or an application that will work with snow?
    TNX
    Yael

Not sure if you're still looking for an answer, but I got my ScanJet 4600 to do some scanning. I just switched from Windows to a Mac, so I didn't want to buy a new scanner just to scan...
After searching, I found a topic that talked about a work-around to have the drivers to work with Leopard, I hoped that it would work with Snow Leopard as well. By accident, I found that it did.
Simply, download the I downloaded the drivers from the HP site for Tiger. Open the file, and once "SJ4600" is on your desktop as an attached drive, open it. Right Click/Control Click on the ScanJet installer, and select "Show Package Contents" Expand "Contents --> MacOS --> Sub Installers". I double clicked "HP Scan Jet 4600" and "HP Scan Pro". From there, I was able to press the scan button on the scanner itself, and it was able to scan into my Mac. It won't be recognized by Image Capture, and I'm not too sure about other programs, but at least there is some functionality.
Hopefully, you can still squeeze some life out of your HP Scanner...

  • Does new iMac i7 handle Logic well??

Hi all. Time for me to upgrade computers. Currently doing all my producing/recording/editing on my 2.2GHz MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2GB RAM. The new 27" iMac i7 seems like a perfect fit...can't afford a Mac Pro but can still squeeze 16BG of RAM in there and hopefully utilize the four cores. I know that a couple years back people were complaining that while using iMacs for work with Logic they often made tons of fan noise. Is this still a problem?? Do they also still tend to overheat as well? Any feedback before I make a big purchase is much appreciated. Thank you!!

I don't know about heat or noise but Logic performance on the i7 is very good.

  • 3 year old MacBook with extremely swollen/bloated battery

As the title states, my 2007 MacBook has an extremely swollen/bloated battery. It's so big now that the trackpad no longer "clicks" when pressed and the cover on the battery no longer stays flush with the bottom. I took my computer to the Apple Store a couple of months ago but the Genius that helped me merely told me to buy a new battery. Now, it's larger than it was before and I'm getting suspicious that I have a defective battery. As far as performance and stats of the battery, I can still squeeze out 2-3 hours from it. It has 590 charge cycles and the condition is still Normal. Should I bother taking it in to the Apple Store again (It's quite a drive for me) or should I just pay up and buy a new battery?

    Hey Brian.
It happened to me and at apple they told me it was because of the age of the battery, over 4 years now, although only 270 cycles. It's just a question of built up gases in the battery pouches, no joking! I did my research and I have found a video tutorial that explains out to fix it.  Check out the video tutorial:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoOIb6pZ6vo
It has worked for me for over 1 month now with no issues what so ever!
Apple has just patented a new pouch with a valve to let the gases out.  They hope this will prevent any further bloating of batteries and therefore any further free replacement.
Let us know if it works for you!
