4890 Cyclone OC problem?

M4A79Deluxe Asus mobo
750W PC&C Red Crossfire Silencer PSU
Phenom X4 955BE cpu(140w rated)
memory(either 4x1GB Kingston Hyperx or 2x2GB OCZ reaper PC2-8500)
1- sata 2 hdd
1- dvd
water cooling  cpu only
4x 120mm case fans
2x 80mm case fans
USB wireless keyboard and mouse
sometimes a usb steering wheel, or usb joystick
5.1 surround sound speaker set up
2-R4890 Cyclone OC
1-Acer monitor
I finally added the second 4890 card, but the fan stays at 100%. Checked with CCC overdrive, and the card is reporting 127c, 0 fan speed. I also can not change the fan speed manually in CCC overdrive, always 100% and it is loud. The heatpipes are not hot though.
Things I have tried, well I tried a lot thinking it was a crossfire/driver issue but I think these are the most relevant.
1- Tried the 100% fan card solo. Same thing and I do get video to monitor.
2- Tried the 100% fan card in the PCIE slot where the non issue card was working along with changing the PCI power connectors from working card. Same thing.
3- Checked the MSI utility to see if a bios update was needed, I did this when both cards where installed. Showed that I have the most current vga bios and drivers.
I am guessing I have a faulty card, but decided to check here if anyone has any other ideas. Thanks to all, and if you need more info I will post back.

OK, I will let you know. First update:
Vendor has already given me a RMA number(less than 2 hours). The VGA card should hopefully be in the snail mail process tomorrow.
One weird thing, my RMA was degraded from replace to repair. Not quite sure about that one? Not sure if that means that it will be replaced or sent to MSI from vendor for repair/or vendor will attempt repair? Only time will tell, I guess. The only great thing is that just one of these 4890 Cyclone OC cards beats out a single 3870x2 vga card hands down. And thanks to this forum, I was taking some time to read up on this forum. I must say I am impressed, keep up the good work moderators and MSI. Thanks and will keep you updated. Special thanks to Svet.

  • Can no longer overclock CPU after installing 4890 Cyclone OC

I recently purchased a MSI 4890 Cyclone OC to replace my XFX 8800 GT.  With the 8800 GT, I was able to overclock my E8400 to 3.6 GHz from 3 GHz stock.  After I installed the 4890, my PC will no longer accept any CPU overclock.  When I power on my system with any OC, the PC will start to come up, power cycle itself before POST and reset the BIOS back to default clock speeds, and finish booting into Windows XP Home.  Even with no OC, the PC seems to take longer to POST than with the 8800 GT.
I uninstalled the Nvidia driver before installing the 4890 and installed the latest ATI driver v. 9.8.  I flashed my motherboard's BIOS to the latest version, set it to the defaults, and then put my OC settings back in.  However, that didn't help.
I read in the NCIX forum that someone else had this exact same problem with his 4890 Cyclone, and he had a different model Gigabyte board.  I'm wondering if there is some sort of incompatibility.  Thanks for any help.

I put my 8800 GT back into my PC and I can overclock my CPU just fine again.
Yes, I understood you the first time.

I have not talked to Gigabyte yet since my problems only occur with the 4890 installed.
That it precisely why I suggested to contact Gigabyte.  Maybe they can reproduce it and come up with a BIOS Fix or something.  I had a 4890 Cyclone here for testing last week which I used to build a system for a friend.  I had no such issues when I tested the card in my P45 Platinum (E6600 overclocked to 400 x 9) and he also has no problems on his P45 Asus Board (OCed Q9650).

  • MSI 4890 Cyclone - Computer Reboots With Crossfire Upon Game Startup

    Hello,
I built a new computer back last December of 2009 and have been using an MSI 4890 Cyclone graphics card. I am using Windows 7 and have been able to play all video games pretty much with maxed out settings without any issues. A buddy of mine has pretty much the same exact setup I have, but wanted to get a new video card. I decided I wanted to try out the crossfire capabilities and ended up putting his MSI 4890 Cyclone in my box to crossfire with my 4890 the other day.
Everything seems to be setup correctly and the crossfire shows as enabled in my CCC. The issue I am having is that any game I load up with crossfire enabled running with both 4890s causes my computer to instantly reboot. I've disabled crossfire and the games run fine. I also tested both 4890 cards by themselves just to verfiy that there isn't an issue with either card and they both tested just fine.
I don't think there is a heat issue because my computer always reboots at the same exact spot when I load up the game. I also tested other games and the same exact thing happens right upon startup. Any ideas? If you need any additional info from me, please let me know. Any help is much appreciated and thank you in advance!

Please test with one memory modules only and manually set the DRAM Speed to DDR2-800 and the DRAM Voltage to 1.9V.  Then retest.
In case that does not change anything, please try a different PSU.
Also, please contact ASUS Support and ask for information about ANY kind of problems regarding Crossfire combinations on this mainboard.
I highly doubt, that this issue has anything to do with the two video cards in particular.  To properly "engage" these two video cards in crossfire is first and foremost the job of the mainboard/chipset and the respective BIOS Support for this operation mode. As long as both cards are identical* have no internal malfunction and the crossfire bridge is 100% functional, this looks like a mainboard/chipset, BIOS, PSU, OS or driver issue.
*Please compare the VBIOS Versions of the two cards.  This is the only thing I can think of that could interfere with proper CF operation.  In all other cases, you should look elsewhere first.

  • 4890 cyclone release date?

Hi, anyone know when the 4890 cyclone will be available to buy.
    Thanks.

    Cyclone Thermal Design
The cooling system of MSI R4890 Cyclone series equips 10 cm PWM fan which is the biggest on HD 4890 in the industry. Because of the bigger fan, large amount of air flow takes away the heat with lower fan rotation rate. Cooling efficiency can be increased and operation noise can be reduced. Moreover, MSI R4890 Cyclone carries 4 heat pipes to quickly take away the heat. With an extra large 10 cm PWM fan, MSI R4890 Cyclone series provides the coolest operating environment for system to achieve the best performance.
    SuperPipe Technology
Heat pipe is one of the most important components in graphics card which transfers the heat from chip to fins of the cooler. The thicker the heat pipe, the faster the cooling speed. MSI unique SuperPipe technology uses 8mm heat pipe which is 60% thicker than traditional ones and increase 90% of cooling efficiency. Therefore, MSI R4890 Cyclone series is equipped with the best cooling solution.
Military Class Components – Hi-c CAP
In order to provide consumers longer life and better quality products, MSI R4890 Cyclone series uses high quality Hi-c CAP to supply better GPU electricity. Hi-c CAP is comprised by rear Tantalum which is an extremely expensive but steady metal. Under 65℃ operating environment, Hi-c CAP can last over 200 years life long  which overtakes all the solid capacitors and is the best capacitor in the industry. Furthermore, Tantalum’s high stability greatly reduces electricity less package and provides high quality power supply. Under the condition of overclocking and high temperature, MSI R4890 Cyclone series can still provide stable performance.
Military Class Components – SSC (Solid State Chock)
MSI R4890 Cyclone series carries brand new all-in-one solid state chock which effectively reduces high frequency noise under heavy system loading. Meanwhile, SSC can increase the maximum current value and provides three times current value than traditional state chock. Therefore, SSC can provide stable current when under extreme overclocking.
Military Class Components – Solid CAP
Capacitor is one of the most important power supply components. Good capacitor plays a critical role in system stability. Liquid and solid capacitors are the two main capacitors in the market. Solid capacitor has longer life span than Liquid. Under the high frequency and high temperature operating environment, solid capacitor provides even more stable power supply. Moreover, solid capacitor contains no liquid, leaking accident will not occur. To ensure best product quality, MSI R4890 Cyclone series adopts Solid CAP.

  • 4890 cyclone Fan bearing going out.

Hey I have a 4890 cyclone non oc, and I noticed from the day I got it off of ebay that it had a bad bearing in the fan. I used some silicone oil and it helped for a bit, but the fan has gotten really noisy lately. I have also noticed that the fan can be removed and replaced. If some one could help me find a new, or used fan with good bearings it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Perhaps contact MSI and ask them where you can get a replacement fan from. They should be able to answer that for you. You can ask here: http://support.msi.com/

  • 4890 Cyclone OC no boot & no post on K8N Neo4 Platinium REV 3A

    Hi,
Just bought a 4890 Cyclone OC, and I'm unable to get the PC to post and boot.
The leds report Video initializing issue.
I've the latest bios (7.1) and event tried to reset it, no success.
    I've a 850W Zalman ZM-850HP PSU.
    Help appreciated.

The card is damn noisy, far far away from the supposed 17dB, really far.
Fan always operate at 100% I think and the noise doesn't change at all whatever it's idle or in game playing.
The card is amazingly hot, so hot it's hard to touch with fingers for more than a few sec.
The PC case itself is "melting", even with the 3 big fans I use.
I would vote for non working sensor (any issue with old nforce4 chipset or W7 ???) but T° at idle is just too much for normal use (240Mhz)
I'll try to get this card replaced, cross fingers.

  • HD6850 Cyclone microstuttering problem with crossfire

Hi there dear MSI forum members, I'm new here and hoping to solve my newest problem with my setup.
At first, my dearest RiG's parts:
-Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z MoBo (Installed the latest BIOS and drivers)
-Intel i5 2500k CPU (With Corsair H100, it's 35-40C degrees at idle, and 58-60C degrees with Aida Extreme's benchmark)
-Corsair Vengeance 2x4 1600MHz CL9 RAM (Working at 1600MHz, without voltage tweak)
-Two of MSI HD6850 Cyclone Power Edition (Installed the latest BIOS through MSI Live Updater)
    -High Power Absoulte 750W PSU
-OCZ Agility3 60 GB SSD + Seagate Barracuda 1500GB HDD
-Cooler Master RC-690 II Advanced Case
    -Corsair H100, yet i5 2500K isn't overclocked.
-And having Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit as an OS. Nearly all of Windows performance scores are 7,8, except CPU by 7,5.
And my problem is this general issue called microstuttering with Battlefield 3 and Skyrim (with V-sync) games. Most of the suggestions are pointed at using 3-way crossfire, but I began to research anyway and found someone who solved their problem by using some old drivers like 11.10. Essentially, it didn't help me at all. Could you please share your experiences with this problem. Otherwise, I'm going to sell these cards and buy one high-end vga like GTX670.

Did you have afterburner loaded before these issues happened? I've read that people have noticed odd things like this with MSI's software loaded in the background.
Recently I've been loading it up first, but the issues started before I had afterburner really.  I'm just using it now to keep an eye on things, but I'll try not touching AB after booting just in case.
I thought I'd fixed it after reinstalling a load of drivers, but it has come back again 24 hours or so later: I'm getting 65-75% GPU use just typing on FireFox.  Damn frustrating.
I may be able to test it in someone else's machine if I can convince them to let me take over it for the coming weekend.  I've no idea what to do if it isn't the card though, I've already done everything right down to a complete format and reinstall.
Update:  Nope, the problems begin even without afterburner.

  • MSI 4890 OC Cyclone - Black Screen , Flickers , Polygon , Streaks , BSOD Issues

I purchased the MSI 4890 Cyclone OC and whenever I launch a video or video game it goes black like the monitor was in standby mode. Audio is still playing, but I can't do anything unless I restart the computer. Sometimes it will flicker first then go all black. All video clips show artifacts or some kind and black and white line streaks horizontally across the display. A couple times it would give me the BSOD.
I did everything I was suppose such as wipe out old drivers, install latest drivers (9.8 catalyst), temps are good, etc. Both DVI and RGB connectors do the same thing.
What's going on here? This card has given me nothing, but headaches. Any help would be appreciated!

Test VGA in another machine then, as i doubt in Ultra's quality.
I did and it is doing the same thing. I have been reading around and other 4890 owners had encountered this problem.
I click on a video file and it would freeze up to a black screen, and throw me VPU recover errors. Temperature 52c.
This thread describes exactly what is going on with my card:

  • Graphics Quality - 4890

    Hi all,
I recently changed some hardware (mobo, ram, cpu) and switched from a Win7 32bit setup to 64bit. Anyways, I was playing Bad Company 2 not to long after making the changes for some basic testing and I noticed the game looked insanely clear and crisp. Now I ran the game prior to the changes on max settings and it looks awesome, however when I played it after the change it was like playing with the clarity of a blu-ray movie for example. The two don't even compare even though the settings are the same. The game was so crisp I had to just wander around checking things out lol. It felt like a completely different game.
Any rate, I was playing it at the time just for testing as I was having some problems still with the new setup which later was resolved with a new PSU, but I did end up installing new video drivers, flashing bios, etc. The video card is the same, which is an MSI Radeon 4890 Cyclone. After doing the resets, restarting pc, doing drivers, flashing bios, etc, I noticed the game looks like it was prior and not what I had seen after making the change.
I wanted to see if anyone had any idea what might have been enabled, which was causing the game to look so amazing? I kinda wonder if it was related to HDMI or DirectX. I was using the same drivers while testing as I am now, the 10.6 for 64bit. I know that's what the game should look like - it ran basically smooth as butter with the insane quality. I'm not sure if it's my monitor not running on 1080p which it supports or what. I checked the dxdiag and it says DirectX11 is installed/used, however I have to wonder if it is.
Basically during that short period (played it only a couple of hours like that before having to take it down for some fixes), I did notice other graphical differences such as light going through the trees etc. Because of this, I wonder if it was in fact DirectX related.
If anyone has some insight, would be perfect.
    Setup Details:
    AMD Phenom X4 3.4ghz
    MSI 790X-G70 Motherboard
    Cruical Ballistix 8GB DDr3 1600
    MSI Radeon HD 4890 Cyclone
    Corsair 750W PSU
    Samsung 24" Monitor 1920 * 1600, 1080p/hdmi
    Thanks all.

HDMI and DVI are the same quality, and both are better quality than VGA.

  • Second monitor stopped working with MSI Cyclone OC 460GTX 1Gb

    Hi everyone!
I recently bought this card and it worked well for about a month. I woke up one morning to see my second monitor having turned black. There appears to be a signal of some sort since I don't get the "no signal/input" message, but there's no response no matter what I try. I went back to the shop and they confirmed the same error which was then believed to be a broken secondary DVI port. They tested a new card and found it to be working, but I got the same black screen when I came home and plugged it in.
I'm using a 24'' BenQ G2400WD and a Samsung SyncMaster 173T. As they worked well together for about a month and did so on my old 9800GT as well I have no reason to expect the actual monitors to be the cause. They both work fine on DVI 1, but none of them do on DVI 2.
I'm currently sitting with my second card and have tried the following things:
    - clean install of new drivers
    - uninstalling the last windows updates before the second DVI port stopped working (and then doing a clean install of drivers)
    - confirmed that both monitors work on the other port
I've talked to the shop again and they told me they got the card I handed in to work by making sure it was properly connected. I've made sure of this myself as well of course, but without any luck. The guys at this place are known for being good at what they do so I have no reason to suspect that they overlooked anything obvious. The fact that they've gotten both cards to work at their place puzzles me a bit.
My current theory is either a bad batch of cards or some sort of windows update breaking dual screen support. I would expect to have heard about it if it was a windows issue, but both cases might be underreported given that most people only use one monitor. I filled in relevant information in my signature to the best of my knowledge. Please let me know if I've missed something and I'll try to figure it out.
    Any help appreciated

it's making high pitch sound whever I start gaming
did have this before RMA, when it was working
I remember this sound from back in the nvidia 7xxx/8xxx series, remember reading somewhere it was normal for cap to make this kind of sound?
    not sure....

That sound can happen on video cards and is usually generated by some coil on the card when the card si heavy loaded .I have it on my 4850 and in 3D Mark 03 on my 5770.Never had it on my previous Nvidia cards though. You can have that with your PSU too.If your card is performing ok don t worry about it.Try and use V-Sync ON in driver control panel ,it may fix the anoying sound ,at least in some games.

  • R6850 Cyclone OC Edition is causing Crash Problem !!

Using R6850 Cyclone OC Edition for my PC with configuration as below, got all the drivers up to date, and BIOS updated too. But each time I am using my PC normally for video watching or you tube, my PC crashes !!!! with a Black screen and nothing more. !
In-order to validate my doubt, I swapped the VGA input port of monitor to my default Intel VGA out port, and removed the power connector cables connected to the Gcard. It didnt crash at all. Hence after that I did some research and found out many people had there share of similar problems and were solved by changing their PSU. Please suggest me the solution, weather its a PSU or Gcard Problem. I have already RMAed my Gcard for the problem for the third time !!
Also, while surfing a webpage, I got a pixelated screen, and then my PC restarted. But the the surprising thing is it never crashes when I am playing games !!! Although it flickers randomly most of the times.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Here is my PC info:
    Intel Desktop Board DG41RQ
    MSI R6850 Cyclone OC edition
    cooler master RS-460-pcar-D3
    4gb DDR2 Memory
    Windows 7 Ultimate SP1
    AMD catalyst 13.1
PS: I did run those tests with funmark and Prime95, with no crashes.

can you test the card in another PC to isolate the problem?
have you tried msi vga drivers for your card?

  • Is anyone having problems using an HP ScanJet 4890 with Mavericks?

When using my MacBook Air with Mavericks OS X, I can scan documents using HP Scan v2.4.4, but am unable to save them properly. I get a plaid pattern in my saved PDF documents. HP hasn't yet posted new software for Mavericks on their web site. Is anyone else having similar problems, and if so, how did you resolve them?

I have an HP Scanjet 8390 with the same problem ($1600 new when I bought it). Using the "HP Scan.app", I am able to scan but not save - something about a read only file.
The HP Scanjet 8390 is a business class **DUPLEX document scanner built like a tank, critical to my business (and personal). ie. I scan 100's of duplex pages a day for the last 6 years with no problems. It has a 14" glass for legal documents, 48-bit, +programmable hard buttons to scan and copy, or scan and print, OCR...
I called 1-800-633-3600.. HP told me they do not support legacy products, have no intention of updating the drivers for legacy products and suggested I buy a new scanner (even though my old scanner works perfectly and is faster and not ).
What is considered a legacy product? 1 year? 2 years? Am I to buy a new ($1000) scanner every 1-2 years?  What benefit do I get from a new equivalent scanner?

  • MSI Cyclone R6850 Power Edition - Freezing and Driver recovery problem

I've just built a new Gaming PC and am having stability issues along with lower than average benchmarking results.
Randomly, the screen will freeze, sometimes go black then re-appear and an error message from the system tray will appear “display driver stopped responding & has recovered”. The system will then operate as normal until the next freeze.
    I have tried all versions of the 64 bit drivers available from the MSI website, with no change in the issue. 3DMark11 benchmarking results are several hundred points below average, the same with Furmark, as the below results show;
    My system is running at stock, out the box speeds, with no overclocking on my part. The components are listed below;
    Cooler Master Elite 430 Case
Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 600W Modular Power Supply
    GigaByte GA-P67A-UD4 (Version B3) Mobo
    Intel Core i5 2500K unlocked
    4GB 2x2GB Corsair CMX4GX3M2B1600C9 Memory
    Coolermaster HYPER 212 PLUS COOLER
MS Win 7 Home Prem 64bit OEM
I'm happy to run any diagnostic/benchmarking software to help identify the issue.

    Thanks for the quick reply,
Unfortunately, I dont have access to another system that would be able to power the card.
I've already booked an RMA with the vendor, but am worried that they will reply with "sorry, the issue is with configuration/software" and be landed with the shipping expenses. The vendor is www.scan.co.uk
