4G should it really be 3.5G

Not trying to make verison look bad, do love them, however calming 4G networking when its not really 4G why don't they change it?
Now Sprints WiMax, T-Mobiles HSPA, and AT&Ts and Verizons LTE. all of them are claiming that these are 4G networks, they are faster the the current 3G networks but not exactly 4G.
To be considered 4G, a network technology has to meet a set of specs known as IMT-Advanced, and the word out is "There are no IMT-Advanced—or 4G—systems available or deployed at this stage."
At the end of the day what they call it really does not matter, but on the technical side of things no provider has a 4G network.  Confusing? Misleading? then again its all just "marketing". right? Why try to define it?  Well because there was a standard and defination for 3G why is/or should 4G not have a standard and defination.
I do think Verizon will beat Sprint, T-mobile, and AT&T to the but none of them are there yet.
I guess I just find it sad that the wireless generation will have their marketing catch phrases that are used to express their leadership in certain technologies whether they meet the pure definition of the base standard or not.
I have seen this twisted and argued in all different directions, just though I would see what everyone here thought.  Do everyone a favor if you don't care don't reply, just looking for others opinons on this.

You are correct that as it stands right now, what is being called 4G truly isn't by global standards.  That being said, here in the U.S. the monikers of 3G, 4G etc have been used to stand for generation.  For those that actually follow the global standard it can seem like a big fat lie to call LTE 4G when in reality it isn't yet.  The truth is that while LTE does not meet the 4G standard as of yet, the technology is capable of meeting the requirements.  This gives Verizon a little bit of wiggle room in calling it 4G.  As far as WiMax, I am of the understanding that it can't meet global 4G standards no matter how much they try.  As for HSPA+, T-Mobile might actually have it running faster than LTE right out of the gate, but quickly will lose the speed race.

    Oh.
When I pushed the "Ask your question of the community" I got this empty box. But I've already asked my question. Should I copy and paste it into this box?

There. Now I have asked the same question, which is of questionable value, for sure, twice. So, if someone answers it, they will get twice the points. Right? Or is there another box for that? Should I paste the question into another box? Twice?
I've been around here for a l-o-n-g time, longer than ol' BenB by several years, so you'd think I'd know better.
    Maybe I do.

  • Making my animation stop looping (it should be really simple, right?)

I am trying to achieve a simple thing really; I have made an animation and want it to stop looping at the end.
A quick search of the internet reassured me that this is simply a matter of putting in a stop(); command in the script. Great!
    Errr.. no.
    Here is what I did:
I created a new layer for my script and called it 'Actions'
selected the final frame of the Actions layer and added a keyframe
selected said keyframe and opened windows->Actions
typed in stop(); and closed the window.
Ok, so that apparently is all there is to it. Only, when I test the animation it doesn't move at all. it seems that the stop command executes right at the beginning and is constant throughout the whole timeline.
Also, I noticed that the Actions layer has a small white circle/dot on frame 1 and on the final frame also. There is no small letter 'a' that should be there on the final frame, but I don't know why.
So, what am I doing wrong?
I realise that if I am struggling to do such a simple task it doesn't bode well for any further learning of actionscript. Which is a shame.
Any help would be great, thanks.
    Andrew

What you describe should have worked, but you might have mis-stepped as well.  Try having the Actions window opened before you select the frame and type stop(); and leave it open afterwards as well for when you test.  As soon as you enter some code in a frame it should display the lowercase "a", so your best bet is to keep trying it different ways until you see that.  As I said, the way you describe it is legit, but what you might have done in following what you say might be off.

  • How to remove Kernel extensions, Slow Restart 10.7.5, Should I really upgrade to 10.9?

Hello everyone, after spending a few days reading various posts about similar topics, here is a breakdown of my question:
(I made a Time Machine backup on an external HD, even though EtreCheck says "Not Configured")
1:  I used EtreCheck to diagnose my laptop, and I do not know how to locate the Kernel Extensions in the computer to eliminate them, or "solve" them.  Can I find them with Finder?  If so, do I just delete the files?  How else can I pinpoint the issues EtreCheck shows me?
2:  I am experiencing the "15 second waiting period" with the gray spining wheel when I restart, which only started happening about three weeks ago.
3:  After multiple attempts, it seems that Mavericks 10.9 is finally downloading from the App Store, but I would rather not upgrade if I don't need to, since 10.7.5 has been working well until now.
MAINLY, this is important to me since I am using Abelton Live 9 with a new 64-bit Saffire Pro-14 firewire audio interface, and it has started clicking during playback, which cannot be solved with buffering/latency fixes.  This is the main reason I got this laptop (for audio production) and I want to make sure it continues to function at the highest level for that purpose.
To be clear, I have not experienced a "kernel panic" that requires me to shut down...  I am simply trying to maintain my system for optimal performance by deleting problem files.
Thanks to anyone who can give me some basic daemon/kernel hunting instructions.

OS X upgrades don't cause problems, they reveal them. Every OS X upgrade since at least Jaguar has elicited complaints ranging from crashes, slowdowns, reduced battery life, everything short of an outbreak of hives. Most problems reported on this site are directly attributable to incompatible system modifications and poorly written or otherwise ill-conceived utilities. They exist in roughly the same proportion that have existed with every OS X upgrade since Jaguar, at least. Apple has no way to fix problems caused by software they did not develop and cannot control.
In your case, one definitely problematic system modification is the PACE anti-piracy app that does not appear to have been updated since Snow Leopard. I do not know what software you have that may require it, but it should either be updated or uninstalled before upgrading to Mavericks.
There are others that could be a concern including a launch daemon curiously named "com.hidden.deamon.plist". Well-written software should not be attempting to hide anything, but perhaps that was just an unfortunately chosen name. (Edit to add: read http://hiddenapp.com/support/installation/how-uninstall/ - it doesn't appear to have been updated for Mavericks either.)
If your boot time is excessive then an impending hard disk failure may be the cause. You must have a backup strategy, and rule out hardware failure as the possible cause of that symptom. If you have a backup strategy, then upgrading to Mavericks carries no risk whatsoever. If you don't like Mavericks, you can always restore your system from its backup. Merely having a backup often seems to preclude the need for it.
I upgraded many portable and desktop Macs of various ages and configurations. In every case not only was the upgrade completely uneventful, every Mac enjoyed quantifiable performance improvements. None of them have the notoriously problematic software or incompatible hardware modifications that seem to have caused others misery though. In broad terms those can be categorized as third party "anti-virus" or "security" junk, "cleaning" or "optimizing" utilities, any number of invasive Google services including Chrome, and similarly ill-conceived system hacks.
In your case the only potential concern with which I am familiar is PACE. Since I have no way of knowing what software you use I can only speculate what may require it, but I seem to recall PACE is or was used by Avid Pro Tools. Does that help?

  • Using AE - should i really buy a mac?

I'm a graphic designer needing to buy a new computer. My main concerns are the life span of the computer, right now I've been using a Toshiba Satellite that I've had for 3 1/2 years that has reached its end. I'd like to go a longer time, at least four years or so.
My second main concern is stability. As I'm sure many of you can feel my pain I'm very tired of "Illegal operations" and "Not Responding" notices in the middle of projects. I understand these types of things are unavoidable but I'd to minimize them as much as possible. OSX, XP, Vista??
Third concern is performance. I'm looking to get Adobe Master Collection and run a least a few of these programs at a time. Specifically I'd like to be able to run Affect Effects and Photoshop without having to wait forever to for a ram preview in AE. I would really like something that moves fast and does what I want it to, when I want it to.
I've looked a lot into the MacBook Pro, its seems like a suped up version of that (2.53GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB memory, 320GB HD) could definitely do the job, but that runs upwards of $3000. Is that really the best way to go? I hear that it is but it's hard for me to believe that when I see a PC with3GB ram and 350GB HD for $500. Even if I had to buy a new PC every two years that would still be a better way to go.
Is there a PC brand (Sony, Toshiba, etc) that's better than another? Mac the way to go?? Mac Pro refirb??
Thoughts? Advise? Let me have it!
    Thanks!

I used PC's exclusively until recently. I would shop for good deals and
the machine would typically last about three years and then stuff would
start to go wrong. I cannot say for sure, but I suspect it was a case of
you get that you pay for. Buying low cost goods got me lower quality.
Since video work often runs the components at a high output, its likely
I just burned them out. After the last time, I spec'd a Mac Pro Octo
against some of the built for video and or server and workstation class
PC's and found that the price was not that much higher. So I tried the
Mac. I like it. Not a quantum leap over Windows like it, but its a
really nice machine. But then for three grand, it better be eh?

I was usually free of these in Windows, only having them crop up when
the machine was telling me it was getting ready to go south.

eight core machine with 6 gig beats the hell out of any prior Winbox. AE
PS, Bridge all together with no noticeable lapse. But then again, no
Winbox I had even lived in the same zip code hardware wise.

Having looked ahead at other responses, I will agree very much with Mr.
Patterson. Choosing strictly for price will not necessarily provide
quality you can rely on. And at the end of the day, in the real world,
both PC's and Mac's are providing real production for lots of people,
and since dollars vote better than internet posts, its clear both
platforms are worth their salt. The main difference must be the quality
of the components used to run the software.

  • Should we really go for bean data controls for a new project?

    Hi,
I am still new data controls and trying to figure out the advantages of using bean data controls for our new project. Our UI is going to have customized UI components and our back end is going to be a tcp/ip server.
Is it a good idea to develop java beans and then create data controls to bind to UI layer? I think it makes sense to use data controls if we want to use existing java beans. Maybe we would be separating the model layer by using data controls, but only thing it would be doing for us would be the simple object calls to my java beans. Would it be better to use data controls or use I choose to make object calls?
    Thanks,
    Manoj

    Hi,
the POJO data control will always give you a benefit and develope productivity, unless what you have to build fits on a single page - in which case you may not mind the burdon of manual UI component binding

  • Should Color really be doing this to my footage?

    http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1275/12593931451411a16f89b.jpg
Today I've come to use Color after not needing to use it for a while and found that the whole program has wasted most of my day.
As you can see from the image link, Color has decided, for seemingly no reason to start doing that to my footage. I applied an effect in the Colour Fx room and suddenly all the footage turned into that in the preview monitor. Earlier when i tried to render the preview window did the same thing, and rendered all of the footage as that green mess.
I also realised today Colour can't handle stills, or footage that has been speeded up and just crashes when you want to send back to FCP
What is the point of this program if it is mostly incompatible with FCP!
Has anyone seen this issue before? When I first got Color it seemed to work fine, nothing like this ever happened.
I'm going back to grading in FCP, this is just stupid.

    mrjam wrote:
I thought it might be my display card as well at first (I run color with a dual display external monitor) but when I exit Color or run FCP with the second monitor everything is fine. I think I also ran Color on just the laptops main screen and the error continued.
Well, then I'd look at the ColorFX nodes you're using. You said the problem started with an effect you created... have you been able to determine if that's the culprit?

  • Text is so small and hard to read...should it really be like this?

I have the 27 in screen- and must be the only person alive who is hating it.
WHY is all the text so small now? One would think on a large screen it would be BIGGER not smaller?
I came from a 14 in Dell monitor and everything was SO MUCH easier to read on there compared to teh 27 in screen.
I realize I can zoom in on pages in safari, but I have to do that for each page. (pain in the butt).
The text/words/buttons in photoshop are small as well, as in all my software I'm using.
Please someone tell me there is a remedy to this so that I can operate my programs without having to use a binocular at the computer desk. I can't figure out why everything is so freaking small on a Ginormous screen.

I think the short answer as to "why?" would be the monitor has a higher pixel density. You're probably running the monitor at its maximum native resolution (2560 x 1440). You could try one of its other resolutions (1920 x 1080 or 1280 x 720) but I don't think you'll be any happier with those either.
Didn't you take a look at the monitor (or the 27" imac) in a local apple store before deciding to buy it?

  • Should it Really take 24+ hours to transcode???

I have approximately 2 hrs worth of timeline (one hd video  and one audio 5.1). I have a few edits and transitions from Premiere Pro CS4. Encore CS4 and Premiere Pro are both updated. So far transcoding is about halfway done at about 12 hours. Therefore I project finish at maybe 24+ hrs. I am outputting for dvd disc not blu-ray. Using iMac 2.93Ghz intel core duo, 600 GB HD, 4 GB 1067  MHz ddr3, OSX10.5.8. Is this reasonable or do I have a problem somewhere? Thank you in advance!

I know exactly what you mean. I haven't gotten any help on this forum either. I used to use Encore 1.5, upgraded to CS3 this year. Used to transcode in 2-4 hours in 1.5, and in CS3 it's like you say, 24 hours! I don't know if they dumbed the transcoding down for DVD because of Blu-Ray, but it's very disappointing! I've since given up on transcoding in Encore and now do it in Premiere's media encoder. I still use Premiere Pro 1.5 however. And for some reason, I have to rename the resulting mpeg 2 extensions. It's either to or from ".mp2" and ".mv2" I think before they import into Encore CS3. I just drag and drop the resulting mpeg 2 clips and .wav audio files onto their timelines in Encore.
Before I transcode in Adobe Premiere, I put markers on the Premiere timeline where I later want to put chapter marks in Encore so they'll go exactly on the frame where I want them in Encore. (GOP is set where I put the markers, or something like that!)

  • My itunes is running really slow and will not recognise any of the 2 iphones 1 "3g" and 1 "4" or my ipod touch ?

my itunes is running very very slow the rest of my pc is fine.
i tunes will not recognise either of my iphones "3gs,4, nor my ipod touch4".
i have uninstalled all apple software and re installed itunes .
i have checked my iphone at a retail store and it was found.
i have the latest version of ie "ie9" and itunes "10.2.2.12".
any ideas what to do ?

Hi Grant, Thanks for the response, much appreciated.
I agree that it should not really run slow however I would really like to upgrade to Lion anyway and thought that doing it via the SSD route would be  good way to do it as the SSD should help speed things up once I sort out the underlying issue at present. I also wanted to try and load lion but still have Snow Leopard available on the original drive for the time being till I knew that eveything was working well using Lion but I'm not sure if this is possible and how to do to this.
I have just clicked on 'Verify disk' on HD1 in the utility menu and there is a problem there. It is asking for me to start using another disk such as the mac installation disc but I am not sure where I have put this. Seeing as I have upgraded to SL would this now be the new installation disc and if so, do I just put the disc in the machine and restart?
    Thanks for your help

  • Migrate Assistant really sluggish

(X post - mistaken put this in the Logic Pro thread)
Sorry - newbie to the forum here. I've search the forum, but can't find an answer so far.
After a few months of having my new MBP, I've decided to migrate my iMac (Intel) across to the new MBP. Set it all up OK - no problems with the wireless setup and it's started fine. (Both machines are running Leopard 10.5). However, after a promising start, both machines now report that there are over 19 hours remaining! They've been reporting this for the last hour or so.
    My questions are:
    1) Should it really be taking this long? (I've put the machines close to each other and it hasn't affected the timing.)
    2) Can I abort the migration and start again using the firewire connection?
    Any help/suggestions much appreciated.
    Thanks.

According to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/9032.html you can't do it wirelessly. Hook them up with FireWire.

    Any help/suggestions much appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Should I modify the camera file to change the greyscale resolution of my Photonfocus camera from 8 to 12 bits?

I have some difficulties to use my Photonfocus camera with 12 bits greyscale resolution.
    I have a Photonfocus camera MV-D1024E-160-CL-12, a NI PCIe-1429 frame grabber, PFRemote 2.0 and Measurement & Automation Explorer 4.2.1.3001.
If I work with 8 bits greyscale resolution (PFRemote -> Data Output: Resolution : 8 bit) and look at the image with MAX (Système -> Périphériques et interfaces -> NI-IMAQ Devices -> img0: NI PCIe-1429 -> Channel 0: PhotonFocus MV-D1024-160 (file in attachment), everything is working.
Now I'd like to work with 12 bits and I don't know exactly what I have to change? I've tried to change only the resolution in PFRemote (PFRemote -> Data Output: Resolution : 12 bit) but then the image in MAX remains a 8 bit resolution. Then I've tried also to modify the camera file (file in attachment). I've put the "BitDepth" and the "BitsPerComponent" at 12 instead of 8 and the "BinaryThreshold" to (0,4095). But when trying to grab an image in MAX, an error occured: "Error 0xBFF600FE Le nombre de bits par pixel requis est invalide".
Should I really modify the camera file in order to grab 12 bits images? Or what should I do?
    Thank you
    Mélanie

    PhotonFocus MV-D1024-160.txt ‏5 KB

    Hi toto26,
Thank you very much for the information. I did exactly the same thing as you suggested for 8-bit, and I were able to change the resolution (number of pixels), exposure time, frame rate without any problem. I understand that I need to coordinate the MAX icd file and the settings of PFRemote.
When I tried to switch to 12-bit, I found that I need the camera file (.icd) for 12-bit. I tried the attached icd in the previous discussion (Photonfocus MV-D1024E-160-CL-12 12-bit 1429 X4 only.zip 2 KB). There was an IMAX Error: Error 0xBFF6002C, FIFO overflow caused acquisition to halt. Then I think maybe this camera file is not good for me because I have a PCIe-1427, instead of a PCIe-1429.
So, I downloaded the camera file generator (from the same link you suggested) to create my own camera file. When I run the generator, the first window popped out was for camera setting, and there was no Photonfocus in the choice for the Manufacturer. Is it true that I cannot create camera files for Photonfocus camera, or I simply don't know how to use the generator?
Thanks again for the help and I look forward to more advices.
    Regards,
    Hasi

  • Should it take 7+ hours to export my 2 minute video?

I converted footage from my flip cam to apple ProRes 422 in Quicktime 7. I did some quick edits, threw a few fllters on there & made a minute & a half video. Iopted for the simple share feature to export the movie for youtube. It’s been transcoding for 7+ hours.  Should it really take this long? Or should I try exporting it some other way?

No, it shoudln't take that long.
    Yes, try something else.
Exactly what you're doing wrong is difficult to tell from the post but the most liekly cause is FCP is going back tot eh original media, doing a frame-by-frame conversion, and then rendering and then attempting to transcode to the YT target.
Export a self-contained movie, use Compressor to arrive at the YT specs or bring your movie back into an empty sequence, share to YT from that.

  • Really need help with CS5 constantly crashing.

I last posted here about 5 months ago with problems with CS5 hanging or crashing. And then the advice was to remove all third-party plugins which I did, I also deleted a whole slew of fonts that had been installed by other applications without my really noticing. Something worked, because CS5 became relatively stable. I was able to work on big multi-layered files. I even reintroduced some of my plugins without causing any problems. But a few weeks ago it started crashing again. It is much worse than before, I can't use it for more than a few minutes, usually, before getting the dreaded "stopped working" error message. Sometimes I don't even get past Camera Raw, because Camera Raw hangs. The crashes seem to be random, they don't occur in relation to a particular task, it can happen when I am opening a file, or saving one, or at almost any time in between.
It is CS5 32 bit on Vista Home Premium (32 bit). I have 4gb of RAM, the graphics card is an ATI Radeon 3800 series with 512GB. (Not the greatest, I know, but it is on Adobe's list as a supported card. I don't mind upgrading the card but I'd like to know that it will solve the problem.) It has the latest drivers installed. I've tried running Photoshop with with Open GL Enabled and with it not enabled. It doesn't make any difference. I have reset the preferences. I have, of course, uninstalled all the third party plugins. I've checked for duplicate and corrupt fonts. I uninstalled and reinstalled CS5 and all the updates. Nothing has helped and i have no idea what else to try.
(The really infuriating thing is that CS runs and is stable on my old laptop, which is running XP and has integrated graphics and 1GB of RAM. It's very, very slow, and I can't imagine what it would be like if I was trying to work with loads of layers, but it never crashes.)
The Event Viewer log description is not enlightening, unless I am missing something:  Faulting application Photoshop.exe, version 12.0.4.0, time stamp 0x4d9d8cbc, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x00000000, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x5b780000, process id 0x%9, application start time 0x%10.
Any suggestions would be most welcome. I have work piling up and I'm getting desperate.

    Thank you, Noel and Chris.
Chris, that is exactly what is in the log:
process id 0x%9, application start time 0x%10.
I guess I should start really worrying now, then!
Malware, well, I do regular complete scans. The last one was just a couple of days ago. I'll do another.
A few days ago I also ran sfc/scannow, which reported some corrupt files, which were supposedly repaired. And some files that could not be repaired, which the cbs log revealed to be some truetype fonts (not system fonts). I reinstalled the fonts anyway. Running the scan doesn't reveal anything now, but I don't know how how reliable it is.
Re the .NET error, I wonder if this relates to the shutdown process. I have noticed that after getting the message that Windows is closing Photoshop it then sometimes hangs and I have to close it manually from Task Manager.
Noel, I have checked the RAM, though only using Windows Memory Diagnostic. It didn't find anything amiss. I also ran CHKDSK, which didn't find any hard drive errors.
But bottom line, it looks like my problem is a system problem and not a Photoshop one, I guess, so I really shouldn't even be posting all this rubbish here! I'm still not sure why the only application so far affected is Photoshop, except that perhaps it is the most resource hungry application that I run.
I think I need to make the time to buy that new system.
    Thanks again!
