4GB file Limit

I have an iPod classic with 30GB. My music takes up about 6GB. I want to use the rest of the drive as a backup for the important files on my PC, The backup is about 15GB in size. When I try to backup to a directory on my iPod the backup always fails at a few bytes short of 4GB. I have see various references to a 4GB file limit but didn't see any conformation that such a limit exists.
I'd like to know
1)Is there a limit to the size of individual files on an iPod?
2)Is there a way to remove this seemingly arbitrary limit?
Thanks,
Ron MacRae

Is there a limit to the size of individual files on an iPod?
Yes, 4GB. See:http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61131 (bottom of page)
Is there a way to remove this seemingly arbitrary limit?
It's a FAT32 file system limitation and cannot be removed.

  • 4GB File Size Limit in Finder for Windows/Samba Shares?

I am unable to copy a 4.75GB video file from my Mac Pro to a network drive with XFS file system using the Finder. Files under 4GB can be dragged and dropped without problems. The drag and drop method produces an "unexepcted error" (code 0) message.
I went into Terminal and used the cp command to successfully copy the 4.75GB file to the NAS drive, so obviously there's a 4GB file size limit that Finder is opposing?
I was also able to use Quicktime and save a copy of the file to the network drive, so applications have no problem, either.
XFS file system supports terabyte size files, so this shouldn't be a problem on the receiving end, and it's not, as the terminal copy worked.
Why would they do that? Is there a setting I can use to override this? Google searching found some flags to use with the mount command in Linux terminal to work around this, but I'd rather just be able to use the GUI in OS X (10.5.1) - I mean, that's why we like Macs, right?

I have frequently worked with 8 to 10 gigabyte capture files in both OS9 and OS X so any limit does not seem to be in QT or in the Player. 2 GIg limits would perhaps be something left over from pre-OS 9 versions of your software, as there was a general 2 gig limit in those earlier versions of the operating system. I have also seen people refer to 2 gig limits in QT for Windows but never in OS 9 or later MacOS.

  • 4GB video file limit removed?

One of my big gripes with the AppleTV was the 4GB video file limit. Can anyone confirm whether this limit has been officially removed?
The reason I ask is that I recently had a 4.02GB movie file in my library which is shared to the AppleTV and I was surprised to see it listed on the AppleTV shared movies. It played fine. I have since tried a movie file over 6GB and this too plays fine.
I hope this is a feature and not something that Apple will remove in future updates.

    jtw13 wrote:
Previously, any movie file over 4GB was never synced to the AppleTV or shown as available for streaming. My understanding at the time was that the AppleTV software did not support over 4GB, as iTunes itself would load them and play them fine.
    So it seemed.
If you look at the maths, a 32-bit number can store file poisition data (to the nearest byte) up to a maximum of 4GB. In order to reference files over 4GB, you needed to use 64-bit addressing.
    Absolutely.
I haven't seen anything official, which is why I am asking.
This is a user to user forum so you won't get an official reply (usually).
My answer is based on several anecdotal reports here that >4GB files have been usable of late.
As far as I can remember there was never an 'official' 4GB limit in the first place, just again anecdotally in user experience it appeared to be so.

  • 4 GB File Limit Question

I've digitised three clips into FCP. Clips are 1GB, 6GB and 13GB in size.
A freelance editor wants to transfer these files to his external drive so he can edit on his PC Avid. His drive is formatted as Fat 32. Am I out of options in transferring the two larger files because of the 4GB file size limit?
    From the following link:
    http://tinyurl.com/6q49vn
I understand that the editor will need to convert to a codec that his machine will be able to play. But short of having to divide the clips up manually or redigitize the clips in shorter durations, are there other options? He doesn't have a deck to redigitize the footage.
    Thanks for the help.
    John Lanza

Issue with that workflow...DVCPRO 50 Quicktime files captured via FCP will not work on a PC. Those codecs are only available to machines with FCP. So even if you can capture the files and get them to him in the native DVCPRO 50 format, he will not be able to see them. You'd need to transcode them into a format he could use.
What system does the editor use? YOU have the deck, why not loan it to him so that he can capture it on his system? Capturing footage in one NLE for use in another is unwise, and should always be avoided. because NLEs all have different ways to capture footage. QT, MXF, AVI, OMFI...

  • Itunes, Time machine and 4Gb  files. Getting a FAT32 error.

Using Itunes to purchase a movie in 1080.
Something I have done many times before...
I have a remote itunes disk, it is a Apple 3Tb Time Capsule.
Now I get a can't download the file to a FAT32 file system error that stops me dead... the error I get is generated by itunes... I have many >4Gb files on the Time Capsule and they are no problem.
    Any insight? Thanks
    John

    Hi Damballa,
Time Machine's backup folder can coexist together with other files, however it would most likely be better practice to partition the drive into 2 parts in disk utility. 1 part for time machine, the other for your audio files. That way, it keeps them separate from each other, which is always better imo, especially for time machine.
OR, since you have a Mac Pro, put those 4 HD slots to good use! Buy 2 HDs!
They are so affordable right now. I'm not sure your main drive size, but Western Digital 640GB drives are simply awesome: speed, price, size. $75 for what you get..is sick.

If I were you, use the WD 640s as your main drive, great boot times.

  • EA4500 router and media server file limit

I purchased an EA4500 router yesterday and it arrived today. Set it up, copiued my media library over to a new Seagate Expansion drive (2 TB) and it currently is filled with 320GB of files. Music folder, Pictures folder and Video folder. Thing is only some of the files are showing up. Looks very much like some stupid limitation on file numbers. I specifically purchased this router because of the media server and now it is useless.
Is there a fix for this sillyness? I can't seem to find a way to turn the file limit off. I truly hope I haven't purchased another rubbish router. The TP Link router I replaced had no such file size limit and was 2/3 of the price, easily.
    Yours, not amused

Yes, I checked that before I bought myself a Seagate Expansion drive 2TB. The router list shows 1.5 and 3TB drives in that range and I would say that the 2TB is veyr likely to be supported also.
The files are bog standard file types! Some files show up but not all of them.
FLAC (you missed that filetype off the supported audio types btw) and MP3 show up but not all of them.
MPEG2 files show and play..but not all are visible.
None of my images in my photo library show up and they are all JPEG. No esoteric file formats.
It seems though that the media server just doesn't show anything after it reaches a file limit. It really isn't up to anything much if that is the case and for the money that router should be better. Furthermore, the folders with audio albums in doesn't display the contects in the correct alphanumeric order. I was playing an album by Cassandra Wilson and immediately noticed that the songs were in the wrong order. Something totall wrong there...the server has to be displaying them like that.
I have Marantz CR603 all-in-one hif fis in 3 different rooms in the house (living room and two bedrooms). Sometimes 2 can connect simultatenously but 3 won't as the server falls over. Even with two units connected it will suddenly disconnect for no reason. My connection isn't slow It is fast anbd yet accessing the media server is very very slow and especially simultatenous access.
It seems to me that the media server element is a stripped down token effort but all the sales garb for the router doesn't mention aything about its silly limitations.
I think the best thing for me to do now is return this to Amazon for a full refund and find another brand of router.  It was bad enough 'adjusting' to the cloud managment - a firmware download initiated on install and installed that. Some of the config pages don't work properly (that needs an urgent fix as well...IP address fields with only 3 fields that won't allow you to enter last 3 octets of address and you can't apply setting) and the dumbned down way of presentating the options makes it a pain to setup if you are used to the usual way of setting up a router. If I setup a router manually it takes a fraction of the time that the hand holding setup nonsense takes. I get the idea, and it looks pretty and all big buttony how everyhting is going these days but there should be a seriously 'normal' advanced mode for people that don't require their hands held through the setup and configuration.
Very dissappointed. It's a fast router as well.

  • Open file limit in limits.conf not being enforced

So I am running a Arch installation without a graphical UI and Im running elasticsearch on it as its own user (elasticsearch). Since elasticsearch needs to be able to handle more than the 4066 files that seems to the be the default, I edit /etc/security/limits.conf
    #* soft core 0
    #* hard rss 10000
    #@student hard nproc 20
    #@faculty soft nproc 20
    #@faculty hard nproc 50
    #ftp hard nproc 0
    #@student - maxlogins 4
    elasticsearch soft nofile 65000
    elasticsearch hard nofile 65000
    * - rtprio 0
    * - nice 0
    @audio - rtprio 65
    @audio - nice -10
    @audio - memlock 40000
I restart the system, but the limit is seemingly still 4066. What gives? I read on the wiki that in order to enforce the values you need a pam enabled login. I dont have a graphical login manager and
    grep pam_limits.so /etc/pam.d/*
    Gives me this..
    /etc/pam.d/crond:session required pam_limits.so
    /etc/pam.d/polkit-1:session required pam_limits.so
    /etc/pam.d/su:session required pam_limits.so
    /etc/pam.d/system-auth:session required pam_limits.so
    /etc/pam.d/system-services:session required pam_limits.so
Any ideas on what I have to do to raise the open file limit here?
    Thanks

Seems like adding the LimitNOFILE parameter to the systemd service file did the trick, but still doesnt explain why limits.conf isnt being enforced.

  • System Check error : Actual open files limit:7000, needed 8000 nodes:

    Hi,
System check showing up error 'Actual open files limit:7000, needed 8000 nodes:' in our BIA system.
SAP BIA Admin guide suggested open files limit should not be less than 8000. I verified at OS level
ulimit for open files (-n) is displayed as '8000' which is good.
Please suggest me how to fix this error. What if we increase ulimit value for open files at OS level?
    Thanks in advance

    From the fine Reference Manual:
DB_FILES specifies the maximum number of database files that can be opened for this database. (emphasis mine)
What does DBA_DATA_FILES say about the STATUS and ONLINE_STATUS of the files in question?
What does V$DATAFILE have to say?
Will you be able to create database objects in these database files?   What does it cost to try it and see for yourself?  With the proviso that you cannot directly specify what file an object goes in.  You can only specify a tablespace.  If that tablespace has only one data file the test is simple.  If the tablespace contains more than one data file, it gets more complex because oracle will use data files within a TS as it sees fit.

  • Lightroom 3 export with file limit

    Hi,

It's a bug. The file size limit seems to be fixed in 3.2RC but if you choose both file size limit and watermark, the watermark won't show up.

  • Virtual PC 4gb file size limit workaround?

I have VPC7 installed on a G4 eMac - slow, but hey it works! The thing is, i want to be able to deal with files that are about 4.3gb in size, and VPC wont let me do anything with them, it says that files over 4gb cannot be imported into VPC. I have the files on a Mac drive, which the 'pc' can see, but it only shows them as being 300meg or so in size, and programs that use the files will also only see that 300meg and ignore the rest of the file. i have tried changing the Windows Temp directory so it is on the Mac drive but that hasnt helped. I have also installed Macdrive on the PC, but that didnt do any good either...
Is there a way to get the PC to see the whole file - i thought by formatting the virtual drive as NTFS that would work, but have hit a brick wall with it all so any help would be appreciated!

Since VPC is not an Apple product, you'll should repost your question on Microsoft's own forums for their Mac Office products, rather than on an Apple forum, as they're obviously geared more toward the issue at hand.

  • Sqlloader and plsql file limit

there is a 2G limit for size of file to be open in sqlloader or plsql. is there any work around.
    Thanks

    Hi John,
The below mentioned are SAP provided details:
For Import file size all MDM applications have a limit of 2GB for file size(Automatic import). Beyond 2GB, various failures may occur. So it is advisable to limit your source files to a little less than 2GB (subtract a MB or so).
As a general recommendation, importing a file of up to 200MB is preferable and performs better.
For syndication fileThe limit of the total size of the syndication is 3.4GB in MDM 7.1 and 2GB in MDM 5.5
The entire result data is read in the memory as one giant BLOB. This BLOB cannot exceed the limit mentioned above.
Using different smaller maps helps syndication under such a case.
Please note a lot depends on sizing, concurrent users, design and network,so these parameters vary a bit.
    Thanks,
    Ravi

  • How to Open the FailedFilesLog.txt File (statement), and How to Increase the 100 File Limit (question)

It took us a while to figure this out, so I'm posting this in case it's helpful for someone out there. Plus, I have a question...
DPM gave the following error for one of our file servers:
Description: The replica of Volume D:\ on <servername> is inconsistent with the protected data source. Number of files skipped for synchronization due to errors has exceeded the maximum allowed limit of 100 files on this data
source (ID 32538 Details: Internal error code: 0x809909FE)
Recommended action: Review the failure errors for individual files from the log file
\\?\Volume{8492c150-f195-11de-a186-001cc4ef89a0}\B1E9D373-2C03-464E-A472-99BC93DB1E2A\FailedFilesLog.txt and take appropriate action. If some files fail consistently, you can exclude the folders containing these files by modifying the protection group or
moving the files to another location.
So, how do you actually open the FailedFilesLog.txt file shown in this DPM alert? What is this path referring to? Well, this is the mount point for the protected server's replica volume on the DPM server, which is mounted under \Program
Files\Microsoft DPM\DPM\Volumes\Replica\servername\File System. Here you'll see the mount points for all of the server's protected volumes. However, if you try to open one of these mounted volumes
in Windows Explorer, you'll get Access Denied, even if you have administrator rights. (If someone knows of a way around this, please let me know). As a workaround, you can access this mounted volume in an elevated
    command prompt. Steps:
    Open an Administrator Command Prompt
    Type mountvol <AnyAvailableDriveLetter>: \\?\Volume{VolumeGUID}
Example:  mountvol m: \\?\Volume{8492c150-f195-11de-a186-001cc4ef89a0}   Note that we're only using the first part of the path to the FailedFilesLog.txt
file given in the DPM alert, starting from \\? and ending after the
    } character.
Next, type m: to change to the newly mounted m: drive.
Then type cd B1E9D373-2C03-464E-A472-99BC93DB1E2A   This is actually a folder name so we're just going into this folder.
Finally type dir and you should see the FailedFilesLog.txt file. This file can be copied to another location where it's easier to use (i.e. in Windows Explorer).
Be sure to unmount this volume when you're done by typing mountvol m: /d in the command prompt. (Mountvol reference:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc772586(WS.10).aspx.)
What a pain, eh? But at least by reviewing the FailedFilesLog.txt file you can determine which files or folders caused the sync to fail and thus take action accordingly.
Now, here's my question: Where is that registry key that lets me adjust the limit of 100 files that DPM allows to be skipped before it fails the replica? Hopefully someone out there will tell me. I know this can be done because Kapil Malhotra
    said so in this post:
    http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.dataprotectionmanager/browse_thread/thread/a179fa30fb50c9b0/e9a348f2a9386063?lnk=raot.
Also, does anyone know what the internal error code 0x809909FE means in this alert? Knowing this my help us determine what caused these files to fail. Interestingly, in the FailedFilesLog.txt file, it gave a different error code next to each failed file:
    0x80070002.
    -Taylorbox

Thanks for responding, Fahd. So, just to be sure...
Do I add this registry key to the DPM server or to the protected servers (or both)?
In either case, the ContinueOnFailure key does not currently exist. So, I must create this key and the MaxFailedFiles DWORD value
    manually, right?
Does the server in which I create this regkey have to be restarted for it to take affect?
Can the DPM alert for the 0x809909FE error event (for exceeding the limit of 100 failures) please be adjusted to provide a path to the FailedFilesLog.txt file
that actually works if you click on it?
Any ideas on why the 0x80070002 "File not found" error happened? The files on the server were simply created and then deleted. Why would such file activity lead to this error?
    Thanks,
    -Taylorbox
