4GB iPod Nano Corrupt

I updated recently to itunes 7.1 and it worked fine on my ipod (60gb video) and I figured I would connect my Mum's 4gb nano to update that too.
Connected the nano and it updated the actual ipod and told me to leave it to restart, so I did. It finished updating and then itunes came up with a message that the ipod is corrupt and needs restoring/disconnect and then reconnect. It also decided it would be fun to completely wipe my Mum's ipod.
Firstly there is no restore button on itunes, and I have tried right clicking on it and everything. Nothing works. So I disconnected the nano and reconnected it, same message appeared.
Then I decided to reset the actual ipod, did that. Had no affect and I have noticed that every time I connect it to the computer, the actual ipod resets itself which is weird...
I decided maybe itunes 7.1 was lame and updated to 7.2, still nothing. Then I decided to put itunes 6 on the laptop and see if that worked. Itunes still doesn't read the ipod but windows does-so I tried renaming the drive, putting ipod in disk mode etc. etc. I have done EVERYTHING that it this site has told me to do and still it isn't working.
I am getting really fustrated now and I don't have an Apple store anywhere near me. What on earth am I meant to do? And don't tell me the five R's because I have done that a gazillion times!!!

Ok I did a diagnostic test thing on the actual ipod (ok, so I didn't try everything!!) The ipod is now recognised in itunes, and doesn't say it is corrupt any more which is good. BUT it says it is in 'disk mode' and that I need to restore it. One tiny problem, there is no restore button that I can find in itunes-what do I do???

  • 4GB iPod nano will NOT update or restore

I have iTunes 7.0.1 and a 4GB iPod nano (2nd Gen) on Windows XP SP2.
When I plug it into my computer, it appears as a removable disk (even though "Enable Disk use" is unchecked). When I load iTunes, it does not recognise it.
If I then quit iTunes, eject the disk through Windows Explorer and stop the iPod service (via My Computer > Manage > Services & Applications > Services or via Task Manager), then reload iTunes, the iPod service starts again and my iPod appears in iTunes. Great.
However, if I then go to update the iPod with the new 1.0.2 software, once it starts to update, something ejects the iPod and the progress bar in iTunes just sits there. The iPod has been ejected and will never update. I cannot restore it as it does exactly the same thing.
I've just paid good, hard cash for this iPod nano and I can't use it?! Why oh why did Apple put the iPod updater software INSIDE iTunes??? That's a recipe for disaster, as can be seen by the multitude of posts on this topic in these forums and elsewhere on the net.
Before you ask, yes I have tried all the USB ports, yes I have tried other computers, yes I have stopped all anti-virus software, yes blah blah blah. I keep getting error 1415.
I'm really narked off with Apple about this. If they cannot provide a working solution, then it's going back to the store and I'll get a Zune... (that's a joke by the way...)

    SOLUTION
    SOLUTION
I had the exact same problems before, iTunes doesn’t recognize iPod after connecting it, I had to use the restart iPod Service method to get it working.
I tried this on my second computer and it worked perfectly, iTunes recognizes iPod every time I plug it in.
I compared the process/services opened in both computers, and I turned on some services which were previously on disable(excluding iPod Service). Unfortunately I forgot which services it was, so I took some screenshots and compare these with your services.
After modifying the services, I tried plug and unplug the iPod several times without closing iTunes, iPod was instantly recognized by iTunes every time!
I attached the links to screenshots of my automatic services and manual services, ignore the service if its not on your list!
For those don’t know how to open Services, Start -> Run -> “services.msc”

-If anyone know the specific services required to be turned on, please reply in this thread.
-I am using the 2nd Gen Nano 2GB version with latest iTunes.

  • IPod nano corrupted iPhoto thumbnails?

After syncing my photos for the first time with my iPod nano, I have a number of thumbnails in iPhoto that show up as blank, and iPhoto seems to have a hard time scaling pictures in general. Rebuilding the library has not helped. Has anyone else had this problem?
    Thanks!

    Hi bob,
I don't think any update to the iPod software will put your iPhoto library back together again. (By the way, there is an update to the iPod software)
I suggest you navigate through the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder and see if the images are still there. If they are and you can open them with Preview, the images are fine.
I also suggest for you to create a new library and import/add to the library the images from the corrupt library. I will tell you ahead of time that this will import all your images in dated rolls, but you will have to redo albums, keywords, slideshows, books, etc.
    Instructions:
Drag old iPhoto Library to the desktop
    Launch iPhoto
Create new library and name it at the prompt
    Go to File/add to library
Navigate to the library on the desktop and choose it
    Let iPhoto import your images.
More details on what will happen on Page 2, #2
    iPhoto Help
    iPhoto Help 2
good luck if you should decide to do this.
You might also want to export just the images you want on the iPod nano to another folder in your Users folder and use this folder as the sync folder. You would do that within iTunes when you mount the iPod, click on the iPod icon on the bottom right and go to the correct place to change the location of images to sync

  • 2/3 Of my 4GB Ipod Nanos (2nd gen), wont sync movies.

So yeah I have three 4GB 2nd gen Ipod nanos, and two of them refuse to sync movies, and have trouble syncing music most of the time as well.
When I try to sync a movie it says syncing Ipod for about 5 seconds then says sync complete, which isnt true...Ive looked through all the support FAQ and whatnot, and find it extremely difficult to find anything helpful.
And now I found these discussions! YAY for hope!
    Help?

Check your settings for syncing movies with those iPods and make sure you are allowing already watched movies to by synced.

  • IPod nano "corrupted."

So I just got the new iPod nano for my birthday last week. And today while it was charging, I turned my computer off and unplugged the charging cable thing, and the iPod froze or something and the screen stayed to "Connected Eject Before Disconnecting" and its still like that and wont turn off. When I plugged it back in, a pop up from iTunes says it "appears to be corrupted", so I clicked "Restore" but it doesn't work. I have no idea what to do..
    Please help!

Same thing happened to me today, less than 1 week old, try moving the little switch on the bottom to the right then to the left, then you have to press the centre button and the menu button at the same time and hold them down until the ipod switches off, then let go. When it switches back on try connecting it to your pc and it should be working fine. It worked for me but I rang the store and told them of the problem and they offered a replacement, i'm going to see what its like over the next couple of days.
    Hope this helps.

Another example of the symptoms, from Feb 2010 - though in this case the devices work on XP but not on Vista (the reverse of my problem). Perhaps something to do with FAT formatting? Any ideas?
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-hardware/plug-in- ipod-and-vista-says-must-format-itunes/74fd7195-b017-4816-a593-19b613c6d1b5
The Ipods all work great on XP on multiple different computers.  When Iplug any into the new Inspiron powerhouse with Vista Ultimate 64, I geta microsoft box that says I have to format the drive to use it. Secondly Itunes pops up and says the device is corrupt and needsrepair.  When I repair it, it shows a successful repair in Itunes butonce the computer gets to detecting the now repaired Ipod, the cyclestarts over and windows says it must be formatted and itunes says it'scorrupt again.
My flash drives also required formatting going from XP to Vista andI found they were FAT32 which Vista doesn't like.  NTFS seems to workon all my computers, XP, Mac, and Vista.  I've formatted a couple flashdrives to NTFS so they work on Vista.  I tried formatting the Ipod toNTFS and it was successful.  Vista allowed it as a flash drive, butItunes detected it as in the process of repair.  So I repaired itagain, and again it finished successfully.  But after it was done, andwindows re-detected it, Bam, start at square one with Vista requiringformatting and then Itunes saying corrupt."
The 'itunes thinks my ipod is corrupted (and can't restore it), but it's clearly not' problem seems to be one encountered by lots of people over several [Windows] OSs, different versions of itunes and different devices. Has anybody encountered a fix?

  • 4gb iPod nano white screen

My ipod is now just a white screen

    Hello Lpool1,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
iPod nano (6th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3474
    Display shows a white screen
Try putting the iPod into disk mode:
Reset the device (press the Sleep and Volume Down buttons simultaneously until the display turns black—about eight seconds).
When the display turns black, hold down the Volume Down and Volume Up buttons simultaneously until the device enters Disk mode.
While the device is in disk mode, sync it to iTunes and try to restore.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • I have an old 4GB Ipod nano and an I-Phone 4S. I only want music to sync to my I-Pod without all the apps from the phone. Can someone tell me how to do this please?

I'm updating the music in my I-Tunes. I have an old 4GB Nano but I also have an I-Phone 4S. I only want music and nothin else on my I-Pod, how can I get it to sync without all the apps as, obviously the I-pod doesn't have enough memory?

"Other" is data that the iPod doesn't know how to deal with (but on your nano, it isn't Apps). All iPods have some quantity of "Other" on them. Sometimes Other is corrupt files that cannot be read.
The usual remedy when the quantity of Other becomes too big, is to Restore the iPod. However, 0.26GB of Other doesn't appear to be very much and I suspect you won't see much change, if any, if you Restore.

  • IPod Nano corrupted by updating the OS and all my music has been lost!!!!!!

I downloaded iTunes 7 today and connected my nano. It said I should update the OS so I downloaded and installed the Operating System update. After doing so the nano restarted itself and when it reconnected itself I received the following message. "itunes has detected an ipod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this ipod before it can be used with itunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the ipod."
I tried reconnecting the iPod and I received the same error message.
I disconnected my iPod to see if any of my music was still on my iPod and it was all gone. This would not be so aggrevating if I had not just spent about $90 on music that is no longer on my computer because my computer had a nervous breakdown.
So I lost $90 worth of music because of this update! There is no phone number, email address, or anyway of getting touch with an Apple Support person that I can find. Anyone know?
I hope something is done to remedy this problem!

Still not resolved, even worse now. The nano was all messed up last time I tried to use it, now it won't turn on, nor will it connect to my computer. I'll be calling that number today.

  • ITunes & Music Files on iPod Nano Corrupted after Update to iTunes 7.0.1

I updated to latest version of iTunes. Now I can't load my music onto it, since iTunes won't recognize it. I have tried all recommended fixes by Support website. So, I looked at the files on my iPod. I can't access either the iTunes file or the Music file. Windows tells me they are corrupted. It also tells me to run "chkdsk".
    Three questions:
    Should I run chkdsk?
    How do I run chkdsk?
If chkdsk fails, can I go into DOS and erase these two files on my iPod? (I think that I can remember how to do that!)

    Hi,
Hahahah, You are using the right word "seem" and in fact I am not a particularly bright guy on the discussions, there are plenty are smarter than me.
Make the long story short, let deal with your issue.
Firstly, make sure you login as administrator (not a guest) in XP, go and download the iTunes from here
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
How to login as administrator, start>control panel>user accounts>click you account to change>change my account type>tick computer administartor

  • 4GB Ipod Nano showing as 1.82GB

My Ipod froze and when I reset it it showed up as 1.82GB all of a sudden.I have tried CHKDSK and reformat through my computer as well as restore and updates to it. NOTHING WORKS. 2GB poof no more. Anyone else run into this problem?

This Apple knowledge-base article may help address that issue.
    Strange iPod behaviour.

  • Can I watch a Podcast on my 4GB iPod nano?

I got a subscription to a podcast. When I went to update my nano, I went to the main menu and I turned my podcast on. It was on my menu, and i clicked on it, but the podcasts aren't there.
Is it possble to watch a podcast on my Pink Nano? If not, then why is there an option to have podcasts?
    thanks

If you mean Video podcast, then no, nanos don't support video. However, you can listen to audio podcasts on the nano, hence the menu item.

  • IPod nano 4GB won't turn on

I bought a 4GB ipod nano for my girlfriend three weeks ago. The 060628 update was applied directly.
After working fine for two weeks, now suddenly the only way to get it to wake from sleep is to perform a reset.
Apart from this it seems to work normally: after "turning it on" (hold on/hold off, menu+select) all buttons work ok, it plays music, synchs with itunes etc. But after turning it off it becomes unresponsive to anything but the reset sequence.
Tried the five Rs, restoring using the 2006-06, 03 and 01 updaters, and draining the battery completely.
The guy at apple support said he'd not heard of anything like this before. It's going in for warranty service, but has anyone else encountered this problem?

I am having the same issue with my Ipod Nano. I downloaded some new music last Thurs. Every time I tried to turn it on the following day, I had to reset it. The last time I used it was Friday night with an ITrip. I had to reset it for the Ipod to turn on, but once on it worked fine.
I didn't drain the entire battery out of it that night and haven't been able to turn it on since. I have tried everything but restoring the Ipod. When I try to reset it, nothing. When I try updating the software, nothing. When I plug it in to my computer, nothing. I took my USB cord to work thinking it was my computer and plugged it in, nothing. I have had it sitting in a Bose docking station, still nothing. What the **** is wrong with this thing? I can't restore it if I can't get it to turn on. PLEASE HELP!!
PS- I have read through the forum and have tried the things people have suggested thus far. No luck with anything.

  • Can't update ipod nano: errors 1417 and 1428

I bought my 4gb iPOD nano a month or so ago and initially it worked perfectly. For the last week when I plug it in to my PC iTunes detects it and lists what's on it but won't update it or write to it in any way: it variously gives me error numbers 1417 and 1428. Bizzarely I can copy files onto it absolutely fine through Windows. I can't even restore it to factory settings since I can't write anything to it! Help!
    Thanks very much
    Ian

some people have been having some success with the 1417 using eboncairn's technique:
