4GB Micro SD - No Available Free Space, But Card is Empty..?

4GB Micro SD - No Available Free Space, But Card is Empty..? do l need to reformat sd card and if so how
Many thanks

Then there's likely a way to format the card on your GPS. I know that I format my phone and camera cards in my camera and phone - they mount on my Desktop as "NO NAME" and I just manually drag file where they need to be on my Mac. There should be some sort of command on your GPS to format the card - check your owners manual if you're not sure where to find the format option.
Good luck,

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
If you're using Time Machine to back up a portable Mac, some of the available space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of files you've recently deleted. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as "Backups." The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight as described here. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can also use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • My time capsule says it has only 75gb free space but when i go through finder to it there is nothing there. trash is empty by the way.

my time capsule says it has only 75gb free space but when i go through finder to it there is nothing there. trash is empty by the way. i had to delete some things of it as it didnt have enough room and i was backing up too much irrelevant stuff. now it wants to do a complete back up - about 300gb but there is only 75 free. WT

Ok first what u have to do is remove the Time Capsule from the time machine software and make sure the computer does not back up to the time machine. Next go into disk Utility and find the time capsule. Once found, reformat the drive. Then start using it. If you cannot find the drive in Disk Utility, then open a finder window and find the drive in the sidebar. Right click it and find a button within the drop down menu that will allow you to reformat the drive. If you are forced to go to finder and you right-click the drive, you may have to explore all the options within the drop down menu to find the reformat option.

  • I have 4gb of free space but cannot sync

This happened yesterday, but I have not downloaded loads of songs or anything since the last sync.
The only thing it could be is Tuneup.  Does anyone else use this?
Perhaps it is storing album artwork and other information on my iPhone in a most inefficient way...?
    Cheers.

The app is compressed and needs 2 to 3 times its size in free space in order to unpack and install its files.

  • I have virtually no space left in my startup disk and it keeps declining in available free space?

Ok fellow Mac people - why would my 500GB start up hard drive suddenly go from 489BG of space free to about 2BG free, and it declines in free space until I reboot the computer. Even after rebooting though it shows I barely have 3GB of space free. It has declined all the way down to 19MB free on my computer at one point!
My time machine backup goes back until Oct 26th and I did not have the problem at that time. The startup disk on that date is at it's normal capacity. Since the 26th of October I have upgraded to OS 10.7 and installed a trial of GoToMeeting - no changes other than that and my normal use. I have emptied the trash and got rid of a bunch of excess files I didn't need anymore as well, but that hasn't helped really.
Any suggestions on what is happening? And, if I go back to the 10/26 startup disk image on the time machine will that affect any other partitions or drives on my computer? I don't want to lose any work that has been done and saved to other drives since then.
    Thanks
    Liz

I am not familiar at all with that software; however, since your problems appear to have started after you installed it, I would very seriously consider uninstalling it using their uninstaller (if there is one) and/or do a thorough search of the entire hard disk for files containing that name. I'd also consider getting Omnisweeper to check my disk:
    http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omnidisksweeper/
If you find that you have all your hard drive space back, then there is obviously something going on with that software.

  • IPod not synching as "there is not enough free space" (but there is)

I have a 64Gb iPod touch which I have been having problems with since I bought it.  The problem I am going to decribe has happened three times.
To the best of my memory, this is what has happened.
Starting with a newly purchased  iPod I synched it with my existing library.  This worked and I was able to play songs on the iPod with no problems.  The iPod still had around 8Gb left unused. A few days later I imported a few (maybe 3 or 4)  new CDs into my iTunes library and hit Sync.  The Sync process got as far as step 5 of 5 and hung, I left it for a good hour and it got no further.  I think I may have switched everything off and on again and then retried, this time I got a dialog box saying that the iPod cannot be synched because there is not enough free space to hold all the items in the iTunes library (additional 40Gb required).
Looking on the iPod I could see the full track listing for all my albums, but everything now had a red circle with a dot inside, and was un-playable.  It's as if the songs were all still on the iPod (taking up disk space) but the index had somehow lost track of them (or something).
The only thing I could think of was to reset and restore the device, I also deleted and re-created the iTues library and started again, re-importing everything. Again, this worked fine until I later on inported a new CD to the library and tried to re-sync, whereupon exactly the same thing happened.
I have not been able to find any support questions with quite the same problem I am having - has anyone encountered anything similar and have a solution?

It does have a red circle inside, but I am on Windows 7 and have not upgraded anything.
My problem looks similar to this one Re: iTunes library disappeared, re-added all my songs now iPod doesn't have enough free space to sync.
I can solve it by a compete restore and resync but when I try to add something and sync again I get the same problem and it seems like the only think to be done is to restore everything again, which clearly I can't do every time I add a new CD!

  • Problem reading available free space on HD

Second time this has happened this week. Computer begins to lag, so I run Disk Utility and repair prmissions. Then I verify the disc. See attached screenshot for the result. I've ran disk utility from startup and everything began to work normally until this morning. I attemped to verify disk and got the same result that the drive was corrupt. It seems the issue has something to do with determining the correct free space on the drive... any ideas? Thanks.

First, repairing permissions, althout hugely popular, is a waste of time unless you have a specific indication of a permission error involving system files, which you don't and probably never will.
Live verification of the startup volume in Disk Utility sometimes produces false errors. Boot from your recovery partition (command-R at startup), launch Disk Utility from the Recovery desktop, and run "Repair Disk" (not "Repair Permissions.") If you get the same error and it's repaired, repeat. Also select the icon of the internal drive above the volume icon and check the SMART status in the bottom of the window. If it's not "Verified," the drive has to be replaced immediately. If you get real directory errors more than once in quick succession, you have a hardware fault in the mass-storage subsystem, regardless of the SMART status.

  • Vault has 50 gigs free space but Aperture will not backup?

My external HD that stores my Vault has 50 gigs of free space. Aperture is telling me that there is not enough space to backup to the Vault.
    What gives?
Thanks in advance for any help with this!

How much GB is your library?
I had an issue with Aperture 1.5 not backing up because it needed about twice the space of the library to be backed up. So now I use big drives with room to spare and backing up vaults works fine.

  • Not Enough Free Space - SD Card

I am trying to copy 500MB of pictures onto an SD card.  Each time I try, it says there is not enough free space.  Are there any options?  This has ocurred on more than one SD card and more than one USB Drive.
This seems to be a bug in the OS.
I have read through the forums and have already done the following:
    1.  Emptied the trash (While the SD card was mounted)
    2.  Reformatted the disk multiple times (Erase in Disk Utility)
    3.  Tried adding a second partition to ensure that was not the issue.
    4.  Formatted it into all three other formats that are available (extFAT, Mac Extended Journaled, & Mac Extended Case Sensitive).
They all work fine except FAT 16.  The largest file I have is under 1MB.  The other formats do not work in my Picture Frame.  I can copy them over from a windows computer without any issues.  This is incredibly frustrating.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Having the same problem on multiple 2GB SD cards, running 10.8.3 on a 2010 MacBook Pro. Trying to copy anything to the card results in a "there isn't enough space" message, always at the same file in the collection. (If I remove that file from the list, another one will then cause the error.) The card was freshly formatted (FAT32) each time.
As a control, I tried writing to the disk on a more recent Air running 10.7.5, successfully; and by firing up a VirtualBox image running Ubuntu and mounting the SD card through the host system, copying successfully.
So it's not a card fault, and it isn't hardware failure as such.
This is a new bug since some version of 10.8.x; prior to Mountain Lion, I've had no problems. (There is another SD problem - cards often get mounted read-only, whatever position the card lock switch is in.)
Also frustrated and unhappy; help likewise appreciated.

  • I can no longer sync podcasts through iTunes on my iPod touch.  Getting a message that says I'm out of space - tells me to go to settings to manage my free space - but the storage meter does not say how much space is available

my ipod icon appears then disappears in itunes - I can no longer sync....

See my responses to your other posts. Just starting new posts all the time just causes confusion.

  • I am trying to sync 11 new songs onto my iPod, and I have over 2 GB of free space, but my computer keeps telling me I can't sync because I need more space. How can that be?

My iPod touch is not syncing correctly. I'm trying to add 11 new songs, and a message pops up telling me I need 24 more mb of space. In the bar below, it says I have over 2 gb of space free. Additionally, a playlist I was trying to add songs to is not adding the correct songs. In my iTunes, it has all the music, but when I synced, only 2 of the songs were transfered onto my actual iPod. I don't know what's going on or why. Help is much appreciated!!

Make sure that yo have the boxed chanced to only sync the checked music. It appears that it is trying to sync ore than those.
You can try unsycing all music and resyncing.

  • TempDB - 70GB (70GB free space) but cant shrink DB, restarted SQL - Service - still 70GB ... what can i do ?

Hello Guys i've got a little problem here... because of some year end jobs the tempdb has grown up to 70GB. But from the 70GB only 4MB are used... i tried to shrink it down to 5gb (was in the beginning 5gb) didn't work... loging in in single user mode and
then tried to shrink it, didn't work... i restarted the sql service... tempDB still 70GB...
What else could i do ?
Has someone experienced this problem already ? Thanks for your help
    Regards, Dominic

CAn you try the below steps?
    1)DBCC SHRINKFILE ('tempdev', 1024)
The query executed successfully but the size of the database did not change.
    2)SELECT * FROM sys.dm_exec_requests WHERE database_id = 2
No open transactions! Alright, any process holding locks on tempdb?
    3)select * from sys.dm_tran_locks where resource_database_id= 2
No locks! There was a mention of sys.dm_db_session_space_usage DMV which helps to track the number of page allocation and deallocation by each session on the instance. Hence tried my luck with this query.
    4)select * from sys.dm_db_session_space_usage where user_objects_alloc_page_count<> 0
Any session would use tempdb for creating some temporary objects. Since the database was not shrinking, obviously some user defined tables would be there
    5)SELECT * FROM tempdb..sys.all_objectswhere is_ms_shipped = 0
Check for user tables on tempdb
After performing all the above steps, Space is big constraint than execute the below command to freeup the cache.
    6)DBCC FREEPROCCACHE
    This should free up tempdb
    7)DBCC SHRINKFILE ('tempdev', 1024)
If this doesn't help then restart the sql server.

  • HT4137 No Free Space available to restore back up

My iphone 5 's power button stopped working and the battery was shot. I went to the apple store and they replaced it no questions asked. They told me to come home and restore from back up. Well, 2 hours later I'm still not restored. I keep getting an error saying iphone can't be restored from back up because no available free space. Can someone assist me in freeing up space?

Restore as new and sync back the desired content.
Just curious, did you confirm it was replaced with the same capacity device?
