4Gb of RAM, new Macbook, still slow as my old g4?

Just bought a new Macbook - 4Gb of RAM - have a few apps running and everything is sooooo sloooowwwww. Clicking on an app in the dock, bounces for at least 15 seconds, then opens. Clicking on a Firefox tab, beachballs, then finally loads to webpage.
Is there something wrong with my computer? I have ~20Gb of free HD space, only 4-5 apps running, and it's as slow as my old MDD g4 - if not slower. Bridge CS4 is a total dog, almost unusable. Also takes 8-9 minutes to start from a fresh boot, loads the finder, I can see my desktop then just hangs.
I repaired perms/disk from the Leopard disc that came with it - anything else I can do? PRAM? Anything? Thinking about reformatting, wanted to try somet other things first.
Thanks

500Gb is not uncommon especially when working with large prints, and/or scans in 16Bit mode (16 bits per channel in RGB versus 8 bits). Also with hi-res panoramas that have been stitched together in Photoshop.
I work in a commercial photography studio - often we have files that we have shot in multiple frames with a 4x5 film back - in camera raw - meaning we have for example 9 RAW files all shot in wide gamut 16Bit - that we then have Photoshop stitich together and blend - but we like to leave the layers and masks intact for future editing. We produce these for clients that might be going up to full poster size from one photoshop file - and sometimes even push the 1Gb range on some files.
It's the combination of hi-res and the 16Bit color depth that usually pushes the limits of these files. Also once you start adding text and adjustment layers, smart objects, etc they can really get up there.

Those choices are controlled via System Preferences, Trackpad.

  • 4GB memory on new MacBook Pro Retina 13 with 2.4GHz dual core i5 processor &128GB flash storage

    Hello,
I'm completely new to the mac world but I'm fed up with pc's and all the insanity with processor problems, viruses, etc. I'm seriously looking at replacing my HP laptop with the new MacBook Pro Retina 13 with 2.4GHz dual core i5 processor, 4GB memory (RAM) & 128GB flash storage, OS X Mavericks (not sure which version). My concern is whether this will be reliably & consistantly fast & smooth both in desktop apps & internet use. I don't need it to do somersaults or anything too advanced. I would mostly be using Pages & spreadsheet apps & internet. It would double as my daughter's computer for cyber school so it's crucial that it runs quickly & efficiently. If she can't complete everything on time or log in to her online sessions because of a computer issue we'll be up a creek without a paddle since this particular cyber school's tech department is still working off of pc's running Windows XP. My father, thus far a pc user, thought I should consider moving up to 8GB memory but I was hoping that with flash storage being faster, I would be able to avoid the extra $100 for the upgrade to 8GB. My biggest fear is finding myself as frustrated & angry as I am now with all of my pc's, ready to take a sledge hammer to them because they take forever to boot, launch apps, internet or do just about anything (that is if they're even fuctioning at all- not joking). Does anyone have any advice or input?   Thanks!!
P.s. On Apple's site I found a refurbished late 2013 model of the MacBook Pro Retina 13 with all of the same specs as listed above (4GB, not 8GB), running OS X (doesn't say which one) but for a bit less than a brand new one. Is this the same model as what they're currently selling new in their store or did they just upgrade everything to match what is being offered in the current "new" model? I realize this may be a dumb question but I can't seem to find anything online indicated that Apple has released a model newer than what was released late last year (October 2013, I believe), except that the model released then came with SSD storage instead of flash.

No computer is fault free but Apple MBPs have a good track record.  In those cases where problems do arise, Apple has the best support in the industry.
A MBP with 4 GB RAM with the SSD storage should be adequate for your needs.

The latest MBP models came out in October 2013, so it will be the same, with the same warranty and telephone support.  The difference will be that the price will be less and it will be delivered in a plain white box.
I have purchased three MBPs from the refurbished section.  I have never been able to detect any cosmetic differences and will go that route again.
    Ciao.

  • Brand new macbook pro slows down after I transfer files on from old computer

Hey, I just purchased a brand new Macbook Pro 3.5 GhZ Haswell processor, 500 gb of flash memory, 16 gb of RAM, OS X Mavericks, 17" retina display and while it's been great upon first booting up after I transferred over my music and books and docs from my old mac (about 150 gb worth (so I still have over 300 gb free on the new one)) I've seen a massive slow down and it's started giving me the beach ball of death which was the main reason I got a new macbook as my old one was beach balling so much it was nearly unusable. Very upset that this brand new stupidly expensive computer is already doing this. Any advice is apppreciated.

Either your RAM is no good, of poor quality, the wrong specs or it's not installed correctly or it got subjected to static electricity when you put it in.
Best Buy isn't as Mac centric, thus the quality of RAM that Mac's require may not be there.
You should have purchased from Crucial.com or Other World Computing or similar that tests the RAM to make sure it works the first time you put it in, as it costs everyone money to ship bad RAM back and forth.
I put in 16GB a couple of days ago, took five minutes and it works perfectly.
Nothing like top tier RAM for a top of the line machine, especially with all those tiny, easy to lose screws Apple uses.

  • Brand new Macbook Pro slower than my 2006 Macbook

I bought a new Macbook Pro last month and upgraded the RAM to 4 GB and the hard drive to 500 GB. My previous Mac was a mid-2006 Macbook with 2 GB RAM.
I was expecting it to be noticeably faster than my 2006 Macbook (which is still running Tiger/10.4), but it isn't. Two things are particularly noticeable.
    1) Startup time. The 2006 Macbook is 5 or 10 seconds faster starting up.
    2) Safari. Safari is a couple of seconds faster loading identical websites on the 2006 Macbook. I tried updating Safari on the Macbook Pro to the new Safari 4 beta, and that is slightly faster, but still noticeably slower than on my Macbook.
I've tried running the set of Applescripts called "Maintenance" (available on the web) to do all regular maintenance tasks.
I've run software update. Everything is up to date.
Any suggestions of other things I should be checking to try to improve the speed of my Macbook Pro are much appreciated.
I find it really mystifying that performance is so noticeably worse on a brand new, much more powerful machine.
    Thanks

    Thanks for the replies.
In re the OS, I personally don't see many significant improvements in OS 10.5. Sure, little things here and there, but major power improvements over 10.4 that should cause startup time to be slower? I don't see it. I'm surprised in the design phase Apple's software engineers would allow longer startup time (always one of their biggest selling point over the Windows world) in return for such things as being able to hit the space bar in the finder to open a document quickly. I'm not using Time Machine, for instance, so that shouldn't be slowing down startup... or at least actually loading it in functioning mode shouldn't be slowing things down.
In re Safari, I'm doing as scientific a test as I possibly can here at home. Both computers sitting right next to each other, connected to the same network wirelessly, clicking on the same web link at exactly the same time. My 2006 Macbook is consistently faster at loading the page. Even more, it is significantly faster at loading the page to a "usable" point. For instance, if I click on the main page of the New York Times, the 2006 Macbook will load faster and will let me scroll down much earlier in the load process. On the 2009 MBP, the page shows up a few seconds slower, and it takes another few seconds more before the spinning beach ball stops and I can scroll down on the page. This is true both with Safari 3 and 4 on the MBP.
I just find it weird that a much more powerful computer, with a "new, improved" operating system and twice the amount of RAM, is noticeably more sluggish on these really basic tasks.
My next step is to go to the Apple store and try to compare mine to some other MBPs...
I have issues with some developments at Apple recently. For instance, the gen 2 iPod shuffle strikes me as a perfect design. Does it need to be smaller? Moving the controls to the headset seems really weird to me, much less convenient than the old one. I know that comment is OT, I just am starting to wonder about some decisions at Apple.
Not enough to make me complain seriously... I still vastly prefer Apple to the other options. But that sense I had for years that somebody really smart is paying attention to all these details and getting them right... that's starting to fade away for me. On the other hand, I do not have an iPhone and I think it's clear a lot of Apple's resources are going into the iPhone these days.

  • New MacBook Pro slower than a snail

I have just upgraded to a new MacBook, and am having speed issues, first with Mountain Lion and now with Mavericks. It seems as though almost all operations, even selecting a file in the Finder, bring up the beach ball of death, and opening applications like Keynote or Pages can take 30 or more seconds. I am not here to knock Apple, although as a 20+ year user I am disappointed since this is the first time I have ever encountered anything lke this, but I am lost as to where to begin to correct this. Below is the latest EtreCheck output -any suggestions will be gratefully received.

First, back up all data immediately unless you already have a current backup. If you can't back up, stop here. Do not take any of the steps below.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • New Macbook Pro slower than old one.

I recently got a new Macbook Pro, unibody, with 2.8 Ghz core 2 duo and 4 GB Ram. I am upgrading from a Macbook Pro with the previous body design, that is 2.5 Ghz core 2 duo and came with 2GB RAM but I upgraded to 4GB myself.
I got the new MBP, migrated some applications and my settings. Now when I start Firefox I sometimes get the spinning beach ball for a few moments before my homepage loads. Also for example, if I have 2 tabs open, with one playing a youtube video in the background and I'm browsing in the other, the video will stutter and I'll get the beach ball for a few moments when I try to go to another page. This happens no matter what browser I try (Firefox, Safari, Camino). And it never happens on my older MBP, it's a little annoying that a system that is 2 years older seems to perform better.
    Any ideas or tips?

You might want to check that you have selected a startup disk as "Macintosh HD" so the OS x knows where to boot from. If there is no selection under startup items in System Preferences then boot up is delayed by a few seconds as OS X would look for a functional startup disk.
Check and see if this works for you in bringing down boot times.
PS> Also check what login items you have in the lisr under Account.

  • New macbook running slow

I just purchased a new Macbook this month. I transferred everything from my old computer (a powerbook) to my new one and it seems like everything on the new computer is running more slowly than it should. For example, it takes a few minutes for the computer to open programs, like adobe acrobat reader or word. I get the spinning rainbow pinwheel a lot when the computer encounters new documents or applications to open. The other day, I downloaded a 2 page PDF document and it took the computer more than 3 full minutes or spinning pinwheel to open acrobat and the document. It doens't just happen with acrobat, it happens with most programs. Once the programs are open, they seem to run okay. I am planning to upgrade the ram (I have 512 right now), but even without the upgrade, this computer is running very slowly. I had the same problem with my old powerbook towards the end, but I assumed it was the aging computer. Is there anything I can check, as far as the software or setup in my new computer that could fix this problem? I think maybe whatever was slowing down my old computer was transferred to my new computer and is causing the same issue. I'm not sure where to start, as far as troubleshooting it and figuring out what's wrong. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The apps you mention -- Adobe Reader and MS Word -- are not Intel-native. So they run in the emulation layer called Rosetta. That makes them slow.
Try using Preview to open PDFs.
Adding more RAM will help some, because Rosetta itself needs RAM in addition to the application it's running. But the ultimate solution is for Adobe and Microsoft to release Intel versions of their apps. This should happen sometime in 2007.

  • Why is my new macbook running slow?

I've had this computer since August 2012 and now it's suddently starting to run slow. The spinning wheel keeps appearing evertime I use the computer. I tired shuting down and restarting the thing but it still acts the same. It pops up every few seconds and it's frustrating. I also tried deleting history and other things to make the computer work faster but nothing seems to work.
This all started happening on Saturday. It was working fine since then. I don't know what's the problem. Simply just clicking on anything now is a hassel.

I am also so dsappointed of buying macbook pro for the first time, and to think it was just almost a month ago....I am worried about the over heating issue, battery span that never lasprot that long as what the advertisement says...I really take extra care of this gadget because it is my first time having this so expenssive lappy...Ooohhh before I forget,my gadget is Macbook Pro 13 with memory of 8gb 1600 MHz DDR3..processor 2.9GHz Intel core I7...the only heave application tha I downloaded was the Mountain Lion I think ,and it was updated now from 10.8.1 - 10.8.2 ..maybe the next heavy app is the google chrome...and the rest is those apps that I bought from the Apple store that didnt cost me $10...before buying this unit ,I am using a lappy from Gateway with windows OS that runs slowly  because of maybe being so old...lol I am using it for almost 3yrs  because I only bought it from a junk shop alternately with Dell desktop thats so cheap,I only bought it almost $200 from a junkshop still.now after learning to fix and upgrade computers,I upgraded the DELL desktop from 1GB to 2GB,but I upraded my hardrive from 80gb to 1000gb...now I did test booting the 2,the desktop and this new Macbook Pro.my dell really boot so fast half more than this macbook pro...when I am downloading videos, really the Dell desktop have the fastest loading and downloading...I am not kidding and telling lies...I am so shock to know the real truth....I am sorry, but i is really true...But I promise my self to take care of this gadget because its my first time to have a genuinely brand new gadget and so expenssive...if no one believe this, i will upload a video on my youtube accnt just to prove that I am not telling a lie...oooh before I forget...just to prove that this gadget is geguine and new, here is the Serial Number of my Macbook Pro 13 which I posses almost a month now.. • New MacBook Pro slower wifi than iBookG4

My new MacBook Pro tests at a slower download speed than my iBook G4 1.42 GHz.
I am running a wireless network using a Belkin router (b&g enabled) on a cable network connection (20Mb/2Mb).
When connected via ethernet, the MacBook Pro gets 20,000 kbps download. When connected via wifi, it gets 7-10,000 kbps. (DNS servers are identified and listed in the network control panel.)
The iBook gets 15,000-20,000 kbps via wifi. The iBook is running 10.4.11.
Is this a function of the MacBook Pro or Leopard?
(speeds measured with repeated tests at speakeasy.net).

You can definitely thank Leopard for that.

  • Should I get a 2008 MacBook Pro 2.4ghz with 4gb of ram or macbook aluminum 2008 2.4ghz 4gb of ram? And which is thinner?

Hello everyone I would like to know if I should get the 2008 MacBook Pro non unibody 2.4ghz 4gb of ram or should I get a macbook aluminum unibody with the same specs? And does anyone know which is thinner?

Go with the aluminum, which is also thinner. The Late-2008 aluminum model is the oldest model MacBook capable of running the latest version of OS X (Mountain Lion).

  • Mail on my new macbook is slow.

I receive my mail right away through my iphone but it doesnt pop up right away on my new macbook pro with retina display.  it shows up when i click on my mail tab. for example. Say i received an email on phone at 8:30 but it doesnt pop up on my macbook.  So I click on my mail on my computer at 8:50 and thats when it pops up, it still shows that i recieved it at 8:30.  Its showed nothing in my notification center at 8:30.  Why is my computer mail lagging behind?????

no its a live.com account.  Its been acting up today ive notice because I've emailed myself from a few different emails that i have and im not receiving them at all, not through my phone, computer or even the hotmail website.

  • I upgraded to a new macbook pro and gave my old macbook to my daughter, we have deauthorized all other computers it will not let us download itunes library with her id it say it already authorized to another apple id... help how do we fix this

i upgraded  to a macbook pro and gave my old macbook to my daughter, we tried to get her itunes library downloaded on it and it said that there was already an apple id assigned to that computer.
we went on the new one an de authorized all computers and then tried to re load her itune library on and it still isnt working. what are we doing wrong?
i called tech support and they are useless until you are willing to pay them 269 dollars to give you the information. ive spent a smal fortune buying apple products over the last 2 years, the least they could do is answer a simple question. Please help

It sounds to me like there are two separate processes being intertwined above:
    1.  Setting up your daughter's MacBook with identifying info; e.g., Apple ID for the user account on that machine.
    2.  Transferring the iTunes library (a very different operation).
Have you used Apple's Migration Assistant to move your daughter's information from her old machine to the MacBook?  That would have avoided this whole issue.
If not, either start the process over and use Migration Assistant, or try to more carefully and precisely define exactly what you did to accomplish this transition.  You said, for example, "there was already an Apple ID assigned to this computer."  That statement almost certainly did not originate with iTunes.

  • Just bought a new MacBook pro to replace my old PC.  I have LR 4 on disk and LR 5 upgrade on disk and need to know how to load LR on my new Macbook Pro.  Also how do I transfer photos?

I'm not very good with computers and need help.  My LR 4 and LR 5 upgrade are on disk but my new MacBook Pro doesn't use disk.  How do I load LR on my new computer?  Also, how do I get the photos from LR on my old computer to the new computer?

You can download Lightroom thru the link(s) below.  If you only want to install the version 5 upgrade you do not need to install 4 first - you likely just need to provide the serial number for it when you activate 5.

    Mac

As far as transferring photos goes, that is something you might get help for in the Photoshop Lightroom forum.  But you could wait here and see if anyone knows, or you could search Google and probably find out how.
