4gb ram, only one slot

I have 2gb ram in my macbook and bought another 2 gb ram card and went to put it in and it looked like i could only fit one card in my mac. So, do i have to buy one card that is 4gb insead of 2 cards of 2gb to equal to 4 gb? 'cause i don't see how i can fit another card, it looks like i can only fit one card

If you have the Aluminum MacBook, the second slot is underneath the visible first slot. In other words, the slots are stacked instead of side by side as in the White/Black MacBooks. Please see [*this video*|http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macbook13_unibody_memm>.
You currently have 2 x 1GB modules installed. In order to upgrade to 4GB, you will need to purchase a 4GB kit (2 x 2GB). You could purchase 1 each 4GB module instead and install only one module but the 2 x 2GB would be more economical and give you better performance from using a matched pair. -GDF
I'm not sure if it's the case that 2x2GB as a matched pair would give better performance than 1x4GB. It's kind of complicated, but I'd think everything that's done when switching between 2 modules in matched pairs can be done with the internal "bank switching" that's done in the large memory module. If anything, I'd think 1x4GB might be faster.
Of course I'm basing my belief on my reading of Intel's description of their memory controller. NVIDIA could very well be doing it as true "matched pair" operation where the access is done in parallel with an effectively double-width data bus. I doubt it though. Most of the benchmarks I've seen seem to indicate that the most important factor for performance is having more total memory. If you could effectively double your data bus width with matched modules, I'd expect that there would be substantially faster performance from 2x2GB compared to 2GB+4GB.

  • Satellite Pro 4200 recognize RAM only in slot B

I have recently obtained a Satellite Pro 4200 and want to increase the memory to 320MB.
To start I purchased a 128MB module and have found that with a 64MB module in one slot and the 128 MB in the other the system only recognises the module in slot B.
Does the modules in the two slots have to be the same value for the system to recognise them? i.e. both 128MB or both 64MB.
If this is the case its OK but if it is not I dont want to purchase another 128MB module if the slot is unservicable.
    Thanks
    Billabilla.

    Hi
Wow Sat Pro 42000 is an oldie I didnt think that someone would use this notebook in the future I mean it was a great notebook but the performance it too low for present-days.
As far as I know the Satellite Pro 4200 was equipped with Mobile Intel Celeron 500Mhz or with an Intel Pentium III 450Mhz/500Mhz.
The units equipped with Pentium 450Mhz CPU can be upgraded up to 320MB. All other units can be upgraded up to 576MB.
I think the 64MB module should not be removed!!!
You have to use 64MB + 128MB or 256MB or 512MB (only for models with 500Mhz CPU).
    Hope this helps you

  • Installing RAM in one slot

I am about to purchase a Mac Mini but the company where I'm purchasing it from only has 1 x 8gb ram module in stock. Can I insert just that one for now and then add another 8gb module at a later stage? Or, do I have to have them in pairs?

Thanks for this. Thankfully Amazon had 2 in stock when I placed the order so managed to get 16GB for the new Mac Mini - now working much better and quicker than my 2010 MBP!
I went for Kingston 1600Mhz ram though as I've always used Kingston and found their Ram and customer service to be fantastic and reliable. Here's what I got x 2: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0089MTON0/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00

    Hi:
If your notebook is still under warranty you should contact HP to get the motherboard replaced because that is the only way it can be fixed.

  • NB100 - Can I install 4GB RAM?

I have read there are 4GB 200 pin memory modules availables. Does anybody know if toshiba netbook supports it?
I have an nb100 but don't mind to move into a nb305 if this supports instead the nb100

I will try to be more specific
    a) NB 100 has only one slot available for memory upgrade. Does it support 4gb? Processor atom N270.
    b) NB 300, I am not sure how much memory slots it has. Does it has 2? If it is one, again question about 4 gb. Processor N450.
I am not asking for games, it is only for mail and office app. I use vpn client and many windows. Time the system is very slow and maybe more memory improve performance.
I like this type (netbooks) of device. It is very greatfull if you move a lot of, as me. At my office I have a large lcd for more comfortably work.

What is in this 1.4 gb ?
I don't care much about ram, It's just that cpu usage spike like crazy by the end.

  • Ram upgrade only works in one slot at a time

Hey, has anybody experienced this same issue? I have a mid 2009 Macbook Pro 13" and I was trying to upgrade from the factory 2 Gbs of RAM to 8 Gbs. I have 2X4 Gbs of memory and it turns out that only one 4 Gbs stick works at a time. The laptop boots up fine with only one 4 Gig stick inserted, and it doesn't matter whether the second slot is empty or has one of the old 1 Gig sticks inserted, nor does it matter which slot has the 4 Gig stick, but when I have both 4 Gig sticks installed it won't boot up. It just stays on the grey screen after the startup sound. I've tried resetting the SCM and the PRAM with no effect. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I don't actually know the brand, I got the RAM off of ebay and it's not labeled. The parts and serial numbers for both sticks are all 0's so perhaps the RAM is a knockoff of some kind.
But, both sticks work, in either of the two slots, as long as only 1 stick at a time (of the 4 Gb) is installed. This leads me to think it has something to do with coordinating both sticks at once? It works fine whether the second slot has a 1 Gb stick in it or if it's empty.
And with both factory sticks everything works fine. It's only with both 4 Gb sticks that there's a problem.

  • My Mac have 2x4 (8GB) of ram but after installing Lion os x I can see 2x2 (4GB) or Ram only, I have tried every slot with swaping all the slots.

Friends I have upgraded my SL to Lion after installing I see only 4 GB of ram out of 8 gb (2gb x 4), I have tried all the options changing slots and swaping ram to different slots and card also.
    V' Sam.

    Hi,
Thanks for your reply... I just downloaded your recomended software, this software test the memory which is in the list of system, which system says these memory slots are availble. but the issue with my system is different. My all ram slot are working well on both memory slot cards, but in actuall I have 4 memory sticks of 2gb each (8gb) which was installed on one card and when I installed Lion OS X it is showing only 4 GB of memory 2 memory sticks are showing only other 2 memory sticks are not showing in machine when we start and see in system information. I replaced 2 memory sticks with other they were also working and I even tried placing all memory sticks on other memory slot card they were also working but only 2 slots are showing... only 2 memory sticks of 2 gb - 4 GB out of 8 GB.

  • HT1423 My imac G5 only recognizes one slot after installing 2x2 GB ram

My mac is a early 2009 model running 10.7 software. I realized it was running pretty slow so i decided to upgrade the ram from 2GB to 4GB. After installing it, i checked my memory and it recognizes one slot and not the other.

I swapped them and it showed that the other slot did not recognize it either.
Its the correct RAM for my computer, I contacted the seller and hopefully they would send me another. Thank you!

  • Upgrading RAM on MacBook Pro 13" to 1 Slot of 4Gb RAM

    Please help,
I want to upgrade my MacBook Pro's RAM. Currently I have 2Gb of RAM, one 1Gb on the top slot and another one 1Gb in the bottom slot. I want to upgrade to 4Gb of RAM so that I only use one 4Gb on the top slot.
    TechSpecs:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,5
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.26 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 3 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP55.00AC.B03

I thought if I was only going to use 1 module, I should put it in the bottom slot.
It doesn't matter which slot you put it in. If you put it in the bottom slot, you won't have to remove it first if you decide to add a second one later. But why on earth would you choose not to use both slots now, when you have modules to put in both? 5GB of RAM is better than 4GB.

  • I inserted my new 8gb 4x4 RAM but when i boot up the computer and choose this computer it only says that i have 4gb ram inserted and the computer isn't faster then with 2gb!? please help me! I have a MBP from 2009

I ordered my RAM 8GB from OWC (other world computing) and when i inserted the ram and booted up my computer it says that i only have inserted 4gb ram and the computer isn't faster than it was with 2gb!!! please help me... I've got a MacBook Pro (mid 2009)

Improperly seating memory is the curse of everyone, even experts.  No one wants to "break" the memory or the slot by pushing too hard.
So, try again.  Push maybe *just a twinge* harder to seat the memory (just a twinge).
As to speed ... memory mainly lets you keep more things active concurrently.  Unless you were severely overtaxing your old memory and causing huge "Page Out" counts, only faster HD makes huge speed increases.

  • Z77A-G45: XMP works with one and only one ram stick.

I am having a problem when using XMP with two ram sticks. One and only one ram stick works fine. Here is the story.
    I recently update my build with a set of G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 2133. It had one Kingston 4GB 1333 stick in the past.
The new rams work fine at 1600 if I don't use XMP profile. However, every time when I load XMP, it fails to post. The power goes on for one or two seconds then goes off; then it restarts after a few seconds and fail again. This cycle goes on and on until occasionally it loads the bios and says OC setting failed and click F1 to setup.
I thought maybe the rams were bad so I unpluged one stick, then it started and worked perfectly. I tried either sticks with all the slots. If only one stick plugs in any slot, it always works with XMP; if both two sticks plug in, whatever combination of slots I use, it failed to start.
Does anyone have a clue about this?
    Thanks.

    G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 2133
    Due to most likely non standard SPD profiles, they probably need to be manually set up. That or the CPU IMC is weak. Some of the Beta UEFI/BIOS revisions may be available that addresses problems with this RAM. The change logs might indicate such. There are several variations of G45, so make sure the one I linked is the right one;

  • Is 8gb of RAM in one memory slot possible for a mid-2009 2.53GHz MacBookPro5,4?

I have a mid-2009 2.53GHz MacBookPro5,4 and recently bank 1 stopped recognizing any ram installed in the slot (similar to this issue https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4263981).
I originally thought it was a bad module and tried different 2x4GB paired ram kits but same issue. Only one bank seems to work now. I really need at least 8gb or ram for work and I'm not quite ready to shell out for a new laptop. So I'm wondering if I can salvage this machine by putting a single 8gb module on the one bank that still works.
    Has anyone tried this?

An interesting question.  I found this which you may find of interest:

It seems to suggest that it may, but I see it a bit of a crap shoot.

  • I have a MacBook Pro 13inch 2.4GHz (Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gb RAM, 250Gb HDD, NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics, SD card slot, up to 10 hour battery life)bought in October 2010 in the UK. The charger has stopped working. Which model and voltage do I need please?

I have a MacBook Pro 13inch 2.4GHz (Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gb RAM, 250Gb HDD, NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics, SD card slot, up to 10 hour battery life) bought in October 2010. The charger has been playing up for a while now - the light going out but coming back on when I move the cable a bit - faulty connection it seems. It has now stopped working at all.
Apple UK charge a whopping £65 for a replacement - and the reviews are AWFUL for it!
I need to know which one I need - 45w, 60w and 80w are listed - can someone tell me please? If I'm going to pay this price I want to make sure I get the right one!
Also, is a genuine Apple one available on Amazon UK, does anyone know please?
Any help will be much appreciated.
Meanwhile my battery is going down.....

Thanks for that wjosten. Much appreciated.
I've read here on Apple's site that the 85W version will work, as you say, and that it would run cooler with a 13" Macbook - I have a 13" MBP of course but assume this would be the same with mine. I wonder if running cooler is a good thing (it sounds as if it is) and it would be better for me to get the 85W version than the 60W one?
Then I have to decide whether to pay the (extortionate as it seems to me, though I may be wrong) £65 from Apple (bearing in mind the rotten reviews here of the Apple product), or risk a cheaper alternative from Amazon UK, at around £20 (also with various rotten reviews)... Any suggestions? Please? :-)

  • I am proposing to upgrade the 4GB RAM in my Mac Mini 2.5 GHz core i5, by replacing it with 2 x 8GB Crucial 'slots'. Will the performance be significantly better than if I upgrade with 2 x 4GB slots? Is it cost effective, is the question.

My Mac Mini (2.5GHz Core i5) came with 4GB RAM, and I now wish to upgrade the RAM to either 8GB or 16GB in total (Crucial). Clearly, there is a price difference separating the two, but would this be justified by the extent of the improvement in performance, if I went for the more expensive option of 16GB RAM?
Secondly, if I am allowed to pose two questions: what seems to be the most compliant, reliable and cost effective external hard drive for this or Mac Mini's more generally? I was thinking of purchasing a 3TB HD for storing my rather large collection of photographs and Logic Pro 9 musical endeavours.
Your experience and advice would be appreciated, my having only recently made the switch from a Windows system to Mac.

I 150% agree with dwb and woodmeister50 about WD hard drives. They are NOWHERE near the quality they should be. When you can get a Seagate for just a few dollars more, and they last years longer, NO ONE should buy a WD. I lost $25,000 worth of music and audiobooks on a six-week-old WD in 2007 and that was the last I'd ever buy from them. They REFUSED to warranty it with the ORIGINAL sales receipt from Bestbuy.
I have 16Gb of Crucial RAM in my Mini and here's what I've discovered.
You WON'T see "lightning fast" performance increases, becasue the Mini is pretty darned fast to begin with. What you WILL see is that when you're running RAM intensive apps like Photoshop or Parallels, other apps won't "bog down".
Quite frequently I find myself with less than half a gig of free RAM out of that 16. When it was only 8 I was at 100% nearly ALL THE TIME. When I only had the 4 it came with, it was always maxed out.
