4GB vs 8GB iPhone for old geezer

I'm thinking of getting a 4GB iPhone (I've never had a cell phone) and I would be interested in any opinions vs the 8GB phone.
My thinking is that I have all my music on my 15GB 3rd generation iPod and wouldn't be moving much of it to the iPhone. Also, I wouldn't ever be watching movies, etc.
So for $100 savings I'm looking at the 4GB model. I've been told there would be no difference in speed of operation; is that correct?
Thanks for any information.

The only difference between the two is storage capacity but your interests might change down the road and with storage capacity, it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it - especially with "only" $100 more for double the capacity.
Regarding your music, the iPhone can take the place of your iPod so you don't need to carry two devices and once you use that gorgeous screen, you may end up placing a movie or two or TV show on your iPhone. When I demonstrate the iPhone's video feature for a friend, the comment is always wow. The iPhone is also great for storing and viewing photos.
If your are confident about never using the iPhone for video nor for most or all of your music, the 4GB should be fine.

  • Switching SIM from 4GB to 8GB iPhone?

    Can I switch from my 4GB iPhone to a 8GB iPhone without having to pay for a new contract (even if it leaves the 4GB unusable)? Can I just put the SIM card into the 8GB? Anyone have any success doing this?

    Yes you can, you just have to activate the new phone by inserting the sim and then sync it with iTunes
    And your old phone is not going to be unusable, the only thing that will not work is the phone features

  • Went from 4gb to 8gb iPhone - how can someone else reactivate 4gb one?

    Hello,
    I own a 4gb iPhone and I recently bought a 8gb iPhone model. I activated the 8gb one and transfered my phone number to it. The question: what do I do to re-activate old 4gb one with a new number? My wife decided that she'd love to have to one.
    As a bonus, it'd be nice if I could go back to 4gb model and give her the 8gb one since her iTunes library is much larger, but I'm not sure if that's possible at this point being that I've already activated 8gb one.
    Thank you very much for any tips on this one. I've read all docs, but couldn't find much.

    archivist08,
    Get a new SIM card from AT&T, as long as the iPhone hasn't been blocked by AT&T from being reported as stolen. Restore the iPhone without the SIM card in, and then insert the new SIM card and activate.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • Upgrading 4GB to 8GB iPhone 1.0

    Need Guidance.. I have 4GB iPhone 1.0 and I want to change it to 8GB (1.0). what step i need to do?
    1. I switch it do i need to move the My SIM card first to the new one, and sync it on iTunes.
    2. Use the new SIM card when I Sync to iTunes and type my number when prompted..

    sorry, I thought you meant you would take your sim card from your old iphone & move it to the new iphone, sync on itunes, enter ph# if necessary etc. You shouldn't need to use a brand new sim card

  • Which is better 4Gb or 8Gb iPhone?

    I bought the 4Gb iPhone and I am having second thoughts about it. I am thinking about exchanging it for the 8Gb. Any suggestions?
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    If you can afford it buy the larger one. However, this really depends on what you want to carry on the phone. Certainly if you have more space, you can carry more things with you.
    With iPods etc, I have always bought the lower capacity ones because my music collection exceeds even the largest capacity iPod. However, in the case of the iPhone, I'm carry more movies and pictures, and music. As a result of more integrated stuff, I'm using more space - only 200mb free.

  • Solution to still use Find My iPhone for "old" iPods?

    Hey everyone,
    I manage a few K12 classroom sets of iPods (generation 4) and I foolishly updated all relevant apps in the iTunes library specific to our iOS project...I should have read, yes, but am more than frustrated that Find My iPhone no longer functions with iOS 6 as this "old" generation of iPods is not allowed to update to iOS 7. This was a piece of our security on these devices which no longer functions. And unfortunately the file version for Find My iPhone no longer exists in my iTunes library after I updated it and updating the file in Apple Configurator seems to have sealed my fate...
    Just hoping that I have missed something obvious or that someone has a nice work around (like a copy of the "old" Find My iPhone file)...
    Thanks.

    I don't know what you mean by the "file version for Find My iPhone". Are you referring to the Find My iPhone app? If that's what you mean, that app is not necessary for your iPods to be trackable. That app only goes on iOS devices you wish to do tracking from. All you need to do to be able to track your iPods (to the extent they can be tracked, which being WiFi-only devices is limited to locating the WiFi router the iPod is connected to) is set up Find My iPhone in the iCloud settings, and that works back to iOS 5. You can then track the devices via icloud.com on any system with a modern web browser.
    Regards.

  • 4gb to 8gb ram:  Big help for LR?

    I am running LR 4.1 RC2 on my Win7 64-bit 17.3" laptop.  Here are the basic specs:
    i3-330M 2.26ghz, 4gb, 500gb hd, 17.3" 1600x900 screen, Intel graphics (with latest driver)
    Fortunately, I have not had the terrible performance problems that some people report, but it is still somewhat sluggish.  Occasionally, even when I am not doing anything the ram usage will go from 450-550mb up to about 2gb for no apparent reason.  Also, the cpu usage will go up.  It only does this from time to time, but something is going on in the background.  Maybe some of the times it is building previews in the background, but that is just a guess.  Also, I discovered that any use of luminance NR really slows things down,.  Now I wait until the last step before exporting an image to do that so that it doesn't interfere while working on that image in the develop module.
    My laptop works well and except for LR is fast enough.  I am wondering if going to 8gb would be the biggest bang for the buck change I could make for LR?  Often that is the case, but looking at the task manager I usually have quite a bit of memory available, although when LR is really busy like exporting an image to a resized jpeg file the memory of the PC can be up to 95% usage.  That drops down though when LR is done.  The raw files I am working with are from 16mp and 18mp cameras and I don't do batch processing, just one photo at a time.
    This laptop is 2 years old, but still running fine so I would only get a newer one with a faster cpu and more ram if I really thought it would help quite a bit -- or this one develops problems.  Changing from 4gb to 8gb though is relatively inexpensive.  What are your thoughts?  Thank you.

    I agree with your statement that 20 GB is probably ample for caching up to 40,000 raw files in LR4 and LR3.6 (see why below). Even using large 21Mp raw files that will hold up to 33,333 images before over-flow (20,000/0.6).
    I know this is going off topic, but I'm sure it's of interest. I also thought that LR4.1 PV2012 stores different ACR cache information than LR3.6 PV2010. What is interesting is that the "file size" of LR3.6 PV2010 created ACR cache files are identical in size to LR4.1 P2012 created files. Below is a screen shot showing a purged cache snapshot for three (3) Canon 5D2 MKII 21Mp CR2 raw files processed first in LR3.6, and then in LR4.1 in the same order.
    Cache0000000001.dat = Picture 1 in LR3.6 (530KB)
    Cache0000000002.dat = Picture 2 in LR3.6 (608KB
    Cache0000000003.dat = Picture 3 in LR3.6 (590KB)
    Cache0000000004.dat = Picture 1 in LR4.1 (530KB)
    Cache0000000005.dat = Picture 2 in LR4.1 (608KB)
    Cache0000000006.dat = Picture 3 in LR4.1 (590KB)
    What is more interesting is that the ACR cache .dat files are not being updated after making multiple changes to the images in LR3.6 and/or LR4.1 Develop module, only the 1 KB 'Index.dat' file is updated. I had always thought that changes made in the Develop module were updated in the ACR cache, but apparently that's not the case. I went back and hit 'Auto Tone' on each of the pictures, with no change even after zooming in to 100% on each picture. I also tried switching to the Library module and back to the Develop module, hitting 'Reset' on image, and repeating the same 100% viewing. You can see below that the 'Date Created' for the .dat image files is same as the 'Date Modified' (i.e. NOT modified), only the tiny 1KB 'Index.dat' is updated.

  • 8GB iPhone thinks it is a 4GB iPhone

    I was having issues with my 8GB iPhone and took it to a Genis Bar and after much trouble and making two trips, they finally replaced my iPhone. That was great however now that I have had the phone for two weeks I am noticing that the phone is showing that the capacity is only 3.5GB and not the 8GB that is shown on the back of the iPhone and what they were suppose to be giving me. Has anyone else had a issue like this? When I talked to tech support the had never heard of this happen and told me to take phone back to Apple Store because they did not have any phone to swap me out.

    Sounds like you were given a 4GB iPhone as an exchange for your 8GB iPhone.
    Was the capacity on this iPhone ever shown as 7.3GB (Settings > General > About), which is the actual capacity of an 8GB iPhone?
    Since your exchange was likely a refurb, it is possible a new case showing 8GB was installed on a 4GB.
    I would take it back to the Apple Store.

  • 4GB or 8GB (for my situation...)

    First of all, before anyone says "double the memory for only $100!" I'd like to say this: I work about 15 hours a week for minimum wage (6.20), it'll be an epic battle to try to convince my parents to LET me buy the $500 4gb model.. let alone $600, and, most importantly, will i ever USE those extra 4gb?? I have a rough idea, but i'm still in the dark on this one.
    I looked up 1GB of music, about 240 songs. I'd guess that I'd use that much maximum, maybe one day I'll reach 300 songs, but not in the near future. (about 1 GB used up)
    I saw photos were about 15,000 photos to 1GB. I would guess that the most photos I'd have on iPhone at one time would be around 300 photos at the most. (1/50GB?? Correct me if I'm wrong on this one)
    Movies- A side question. I have DVD's lying around. Could I put them in my laptop and somehow sync them to my iPhone via iTunes or another method??? If I CAN, I'd probably have up to 7 or 8 movies, about an hour and a half each. I have NO IDEA how much memory videos/movies take up. I don't plan on having TV episodes on my iPhone, unless I went out and bought a season of one show at most.
    I plan on using my iPhone for all of my e-mail purposes (who wouldn't?)
    I plan on having bookmarks for the internet browser (duh..)
    My contacts list will only be about 50 people at most
    I will add a couple of apps like an AIM-compatible app and some games
    If I had to GUESS at how much memory I'd use, I'd say between 2 and 3 GB, but music is the only thing I have a solid grasp for memory-wise. Like I said, it'd probably take a miracle to convince my parents to let me buy one of these at 500... I really don't want to push it.

    I have '301 songs' on my iPhone and it has 1.5Gb free - so starting with 3.5Gb (the available memory in a 4Gb model), that means that 300 tunes/podcasts plus my data, synced from the Mac, takes up 2Gb.
    For my use, both intended and expected, the 4Gb model is fine, but if I had any wish to use it for video, I think it would prove inadequate without continually shuffling of content. A feature-length movie on my iPod is, for example, about 350Mb so planning on having those at your disposal would mean picking which ones you want at any time and removing some and replacing them with others perhaps.
    It's all down to your intended use, but Allan is right - since you can't add to the memory, it's better to buy more than you think you need rather than less. Even more so in your situation perhaps where there's 'just' a $100 difference than for some others for whom selling a 4Gb model and buying an 8Gb one would perhaps not be a problem.
    By the way, you could always 'save' that $100 by buying a refurbished 8Gb one for the same price as a new 4Gb. Just look for the special deals tab on the right of the Apple store on-line page.

  • I just purchased 2 new iPhones for my wife and I and set them up. We want to give the old phones to our kids, with the ability to share all the songs in my iTunes account. How do I want to give new names so our old phones sync with our kids names?

    Sorry for the long intro question.  I just bought a new iPhone 5S for me and a new 5C for my wife.
    We want to give our kids my old 4S and my wife's old 4.  We backed up our old phones and restored
    our info to our new ones, but when we connect our old phones, they still show all our songs and iTunes
    settings on them (along with the same names as our new ones).
    We want to set up our old iPhones for our kids to be able to have their own names on theirs so that
    when we connect to my iTunes computer, it sees each phone accordingly, and has only the songs
    that they select (whereas I want to keep ALL my songs in my iTunes account on mine, not just some).
    How do I do this?

    You are most welcome

    I want to update iCloud account with new apple id but don't know password for old apple id.  Plus can no longer receive email at old apple id.  How can I delete the current iCloud account on my iPhone if the previously stated conditions exist?

    If the old ID is yours, and if it is an earlier version of your current ID, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • After I updated my iPhone with IOS 6.1 my old Apple ID keeps popping up on my iPhone for me to type in the password that I no longer know. On the Apple site the Manage my Apple ID says my old Apple ID could not be found. How do I get this to stop?

    I just updated my iPhone with the newest update IOS 6.1. My old Apple ID keeps popping up on my iPhone for me to type in the password that I no longer know. All the passwords I type in do not work. I no longer have access to this email which is my old Apple ID. After installing the newest software update my old Apple ID came up to finish configuring. Since I no longer have access to this Apple ID and email account and after trying some passwords I skipped the step. It then said FaceTime, iCloud (which I do not use), and more may not work. I clicked that it was OK since I could not remember the password to my old Apple ID. I then went to my settings to be sure my newer email was my Apple ID by typing in my current Apple ID and password.  Also, I went to Manage my Apple ID online and my old Apple ID could not be found. Is it OK I skipped that step in the IOS 6.1 configuration? How do I get my old Apple ID to stop popping up?

    Blue
    It sounds like you restored from an old back-up.  Did you back-up just before your software update?  It will use your last one and if your last back-up was a ywear old then it will use that one.
    In general, if you are getting these messages on your iPhones select logout (when you get that Apple Id request) and then log back in with your newer ID.
    Sorry for your losses.
    Cheers

    I'm really frustrated with the apple id!!!
    Frustrated!!!

    In one of the help pages for managing your Apple ID (http://support.apple.com/kb/HE40), it shows two separate sections, one for Apple ID and one for Primary Email address. When I go to manage my Apple ID, I see only a single section for both. Can the two be 'separated', especially when you face the situation of having to discontinue your email address for some reason?
    I also noticed that when navigating to Apple ID Support Communities, it shows my nickname 'dishdy'. How and when did I insert this? In the current sequence for creating an Apple ID I don't see this. In my current profile I don't see this.
    In any case, I have freed myself from my previous Apple ID (@artemis.it) on my iPhone.
    Thanks for your help.

Deleting my AppleID would work to solve this issue, but I cannot ever delete the ID? What can Apple do for this?

    If you did not erase your apps and data before getting rid of your old phone, try using Find My Phone and erasing everything remotely. See if this works.
