4K Footage Clamped at 1364x767 in AE 5.5

I am performing some compositing tests using 4K footage (3840x2160, Apple ProRes 422 HQ, from BM Prod. Camera 4K) in AE 5.5. However, when I import the footage, the resolution is listed as being 1364x767. Closer inspection reveals that the footage is truly being treated and displayed at that lower resolution; thousands of pixels are essentially being ignored. When the footage is dropped into a 4K composition, it occupies only a small area at the center of the screen.
Mac OS X 10.9 (my operating system) incorrectly reports the footage resolution in the file properties (in Finder, listed as 1364x766), However, upon opening the file with Quicktime, the footage is displayed correctly and the "inspector" window reports the correct resolution dimensions (3840x2160). So the file is ok; all of the 4K data is there and Quicktime can read/interpret it. Why then can AfterEffects not do the same?

Thank you Rick! That makes sense, the only problem is that Quicktime 10 doesn't allow me to view "Actual Size", that option is grayed out in the menu. It seems to be clamped to whatever the resolution of my monitor is. I do have an Apple Display that's a bit larger than the one I'm currently using but it's still not 4K, so I presume that the resolution will still be limited.
I tried viewing Actual Size in Quicktime 7 Pro, saved the file, and that updated whatever metadata Finder uses, because that shows the correct info now. After Effects still imports it as 1364x767 though, .
I created a dual boot system to maintain 10.6.8 on my computer. Some of my projects require applications that run in 10.9 so I use Mavericks quite a bit. Restarting the computer to boot into Snow Leopard for CS programs was somewhat annoying, so I began running CS in Mavericks and was pleasantly surprised to find that it works fine. I'm currently back in Snow Leopard, but the problem persists both with Quicktime 10 graying out the "View Actual Size" option and AE importing at the wrong resolution.
UPDATE SOLVED: Using QT 7, setting actual size, saving, then importing to AE CS5.5 worked in Snow Leopard. I did the process over and it worked.

Gopro mp4 to prores gets clamped to broadcast safe :-(

I am trying to find the best way to convert footage from my gopro camera to prores. I seem to have stumbled across nastiness.

Using Prores 1080p 25fps (not proxy, LT etc)
I have tried converting my in compressor. I have also tried rendering the mp4 in fcp 7 and exporting a self contained version prores version for fcp 7. I have tried using compressor 4 (also installed) and moeg streamclip. When I look at the resulting prores video using scopes in either fcp or color it looks like the footage has been clamped to the broadcast safe values. Where pointy peaks should be, there are flat dense lines at the broadcast safe values. Pulling back the highs in a three way color correction revels a reduction in detail, particularly notable in the highlight areas
Through much trial and error, I have discovered that if I convert to prores using the ancient QuickTime 7 app there is no "clamping" and there is significant detail retained in the highlight areas (and darks too). This allows me room to color correct to better result.
It seems qt7 is only thing that will do the conversion accurately.
I have double checked as much as I can. In color for example I do not have "broadcast safe" switched on. It has made me doubt my process and I feel I have gone through fcp and compressor (and mpeg stream clip) as much as I can looking for some sort of similar "broadcast safe" switch.
I obviously don't want to loose highlight info at such an early stage of the workflow.
As far as I can tell, it does not happen when converting to gopro's CineForm codec and highlight detail beyond the legal broadcast level is retained.
I would love to hear that I am missing something about this or doing something wrong!

Something is not right.
Using FCP X to view gopro mp4 at either 720p and 1080p at 25fps shows there is no clamping. FCP X seems to be the boss at handling these files. Ive tested this with the new Go Pro Protune codec (which makes a huge quality difference by the way) as well.
Mpeg Streamclip does indeed seem to do a decent job with 720p. I see no difference between the pro res file from this app and the raw mp4 in FCP X - or a prores converted in FCP X.
Its not quite the case for 1080p though. The version from MPeg stream clip is not exactly clamped but the range seems reduced compared to the efforts made by FCP X.
I don't know what is at the root of all this. I don't think the gopro is clamping anything as it all seems as expected in FCP X. I guess it might be writing dodgy files that confuse other software.
What I feel confident about is that FCP X handles the raw camera footage very well indeed. Even if I end up sticking to FCP 7 for some time I shall be converting Gopro in FCP X.

Unable to Capture PAL DV footage

I'm working on a project that requires I edit with both PAL and NTSC footage shot on mini-DV. I was about to purchase a plug-in to convert the PAL footage to NTSC, but find that I can't even capture the PAL footage to begin with.
I tried using both a deck and a camera as the source device to capture from and they both play the tape just fine and on the camera's LCD (not a PAL camera by the way), I can view the footage perfectly, but still FCP does not acknowledge any video on the tapes.
I've even tried capturing on iMovie-it tells me that the footage can't be captured because it is 'half-frames' and mentions LP and SP modes. Would this really matter and why does my camera play it just fine?
Also, when I play the tape on the camera and plug-in to a television, the picture keeps rolling, but again, plays perfectly on my non-pal camera.
I've tried switching all pre-sets to PAL, but it doesn't help.
I'm about to make a dub tape with a PAL camera (Sony Z1U) and see what happens, but if anyone has any other suggestions, I'd really appreciate any help.

Unable to Capture Footage, File Error: Unknown file

Alright, I've been at it for hours trying to figure out what the heck is going on. I have been able to capture footage before but not with this version.
-I have already repaired disk permissions twice, ran disk warrior also.
-I have it on the basic DV NTSC Setting, which worked perfectly on the laptop, but I need to edit this project on the tower.
-Have been through numerous settings and no go.
-I can control the deck/camera but it will not control the camera when trying to capture
Running Final Cut Pro HD 5 completely updated with the most recent software.
Need some help, this project cant be delayed this long.

Unable to capture Canon HDV footage with Sony v1u camera

I'm trying to capture hdv footage filmed with a canon video camera with my sony v1u. My sony footage captures as it should, but the canon footage, although playing fine on the sony camera, will not capture to cs4. Any suggestions?

Check all camera settings and make sure they match the original filming mode on the other camera... and veryify your PPro settings match

Unable to capture HDV footage with FCP 5.1

I've captured HD footage onto my old computer (10.4.11) without any problem but now I'm trying on my new one and it doesn't want to know.
First off there was a problem with the Firewire port ejecting my hard drives randomly so I took it to be repaired and they replaced the logic board and the port works fine.
I've looked at all the posts I could find, I've trashed my preferences, reinstalled Final Cut Studio ( after uninstalling then updating the software). I've made sure the camera is set to HDV playback rather than auto and that the iLink HDV/DV conversion is off. I've tried all the easy setups and all the custom ones I could think of but still FCP (5.1.4) won't allow me to capture. On some settings I have had device control but no image, on others it said the camera isn't connected. The only way I've captured footage is by using the HDV Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50 which works fine.
The camera is a Sony HDR-HC7 connected directly to the iMac with a Firewire 800 / iLink cable or daisy chained through my external hard drive with a 400 / iLink cable (neither of which makes any difference) I can also capture SD footage from both the HDV and a Panasonic SD camera when in DV-PAL setup. The HDV camera also shows up as connected in the system profiler.
This is driving me nuts so any help would be appreciated and if there's any other info I can help with to make this clearer let me know.

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who was having the same problem as you. Although you say the camera playback is set properly, please recheck this. go into your camera's playback menu>menu>standard set>VCR HDV/DV. Unplug your firewire from the camera. Make sure camera is set to HDV NOT auto. replace firewire cable. Now open FCP. Go in Audio/video settings>A/V devices (farthest tab on right). In box for playback edit to tape different from video output (make sure it's checked) mirrored (checked) Video playback 1080i50, Audio HDV. I hope that works now.

Unable to capture DV footage from HDV camera

I am trying to capture from a dv tape using the Sony HVR-Z1E, but I keep getting the following message:
Unable to initialize capture device and device control........ This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device.
I have tried changing the settings on the camera but to no avail.

This is a good workaround for curing your camera recognition problem:
First, check that your Easy Setup / Timeline / Camera or Deck Settings are all exactly the same, then making sure your camera or deck is in VTR mode, try to capture again.
Still not working?
Check whether iMovie recognises your camera.
FCP uses a different form of QT than iMovie for capturing, so if the camera works in iMovie (or if it's listed in System Profiler) but not FCP, it obviously means your Mac can see the VTR but FCP can't, so you need to do this QuickTime fix.

Follow Apple's instructions carefully and you should have things running in no time - it's quite harmless!
But if the Camera / Deck isn't recognised by iMovie or System Profiler, try resetting the Firewire Bus . . . Turn off the Mac and disconnect the power and all Firewire cables. Leave it for 30 mins then connect back up.
Still not working? Try a different Firewire cable.
Failing all this, try resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit). The method varies from machine to machine, so visit the Apple site and search for it in support.
Don't use iMovie for capturing - it doesn't give you a timecode and that's very important.

DVD Footage for FCP Edit - how to tell if NTSC or PAL?!

Hi all, apologies if this seems like a stupid request but I have a job at the moment calling for me to extract footage from a DVD, edit in FCP, add a few bits from Motion etc., but I can't work out if the DVD is NTSC or PAL!
I intend to extract the video (no issues with copyright) via DVDxDVPro but am unsure if the DVD has been encoded in NTSC or PAL. The footage it contains is from both the States (NTSC) and South Africa (PAL) so how do I tell? I don't want to go through a standards conversion if I can help it.
I am keen to try to retain as much quality as possible (client can't provide tape) so also any thougts on the best output from DVDxDVPRo for FCP editing?

Thanks for this - it clearly shows the TV standard and the resolution plus 4:3 etc., so everything I needed for confirmation.
Glad I cheked because it was in Pal - thought the conversion in DVDxDVPro looked a bit ropey.
This realy baffled me - seemed so simple but couldn't find a way to tell the standard. Learn something everyday...
I am using DVCPro for export from DVDxDVPro - anyone thoughts on a better option?

Can anyone help. I need to reuse my SDHC cards and transfer footage from an ongoing profect to a hard drive. Can i edit from the Hard drive or am I better transferring info striaight from camera to time line

Hi I am using a JVC GY-HM100 camera which is meant to work well with final cut pro. I have an ongoing project but need to save money and resuse the SDHC cards that are currently full of footage.
Would I be better off transferring the footage straight to the time line (as rumour has it you can do this with this camera) or store the footage on a hard drive and edit it later without risk of losing the footage.

Here's some more info for you:
This is my pet checklist for questions regarding FCP X performance - you may have already addressed some of the items but it's worth checking.
Check the spec of your Mac against the system requirements:

Make sure you're using the latest version of the application - FCP X 10.0.3 runs very well on my 2009 MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB. I run it with Lion 10.7.3.
Check that you have at least 20% free space on your system drive.
If you have not already done so, move your Projects and Events to a fast (Firewire 800 or faster) external HD. Make sure the drive's formatted OS Extended (journalling's not required for video). You should always keep at least 20% free space on the Hard Drives that your Media, Projects and Events are on.
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system. Do NOT import any of the settings etc from the old account - simply use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended - but remember, if you reinstall the system, and then use Migration Assistant (or anything else) to import all your old settings etc etc, you may well be importing the cause of the conflict in the first place.
Keep projects to 20 mins or less (about half that for Multicam). If you have a long project, work on short sections, make them into Compound Clips and then paste these into a final project for export.
If you ever experience dropped frames, I strongly recommend you use ProRes 422 Proxy - it edits and plays back like silk because the files are small but lightly compressed (not much packing and unpacking to do) - but remember to select 'Original or Optimised Media' (FCP X Preferences > Playback) just before you export your movie, otherwise it will be exported at low resolution.
If you have plenty of processor power, for the ultimate editing experience, create Optimised Media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
Hide Audio Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power. (Use the switch icon at the bottom-right of your timeline to select a format without waveforms if you don't need them at the moment, then switch back when you do).
Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot. There's a great application for this, called Event Manager X - for the tiny cost it's an invaluable application.

Unless you cannot edit and playback without it, turn off Background Rendering in Preferences (under Playback) - this will help general performance and you can always render when you need to by selecting the clip (or clips) and pressing Ctrl+R.
The biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.

Mini-DV footage does not import into IMOVIE/ Camera not recognized

Sony Mini DV tapes do not import footage using firewire. Camera is not recognized. I have done all the troubleshooting suggested. unplug, plug in, turn on, off, etc. I have bought new firewires and tried to import with many different mini-dv camcorders, sony, panasonic. It worked before, but not now.
I teach in a multiple mac computer lab and have 20 computers, non of them import, although they did earlier. Student-use film lab. HELP!

Yes, that's exactly what I do with my EX3 footage too - ignore the XML error messages. That's a bit buggy in it's own right, well, not buggy but it should really recognise the EX folder/file structure and ignore the XML files - maybe one for a feature request!
The 350 is a great camera - very much more sensitive and lower noise than the EX3.
I still like the EX3 though, as it's small and light (relatively!) - the 350 is very light though in comparisson to other shoulder mount cameras. Nice low power consumption too
Some things I miss from the EX3 - like the joystick menu button and the direct edit of parameters on the VF that the EX3 has. I also like the EX3 picure profile system over the 350 way of storing profiles (more similar to the 700 I believe).

FCP 5.0.1 ingest of 24f footage from Canon Xh-A1

Hi: I am working with a Power Mac G5 running FCP 5.0.1 and Tiger 10.4.1
I have been given a mini dv tape by a client and they don't know any of the specifications about how the footage was shot. All they know is that is was shot using a Canon Xh-A1 in HDV. I am trying to import this footage into FCP 5.0.1 using my Sony Z1 and I'm having some problems.
1. Will the Sony Z1 play back a tape that was shot with this canon camera? When I try to play back the tape using my Z1 I get no image, and the client swears the tape is not blank because he has seen it. I am thinking the shooter was shooting in 24f mode and my Z1 will not play that.
2. Is there any way I can even edit 24f footage in FCP 5.0.1? And if so, what should the preset be?
3. For the ingest of the footage I guess I could rent a Xh-A1, but was wondering if a HV20 could do the job?

Nope...If it was shot 24f then only a Canon camera with that option will play it back. It is a format SPECIFIC to Canon. Sony won't play it back. Sony will play back Canon tapes, if you shoot 1080i60...that format they share. But their 24f/24p formats...non-interchangable. You'll have to borrow the clients camera to capture.

Trouble importing HDV mini DV footage from my Sony HVR Z7U into FCP 6.0.6

Cannot import HDV mini DV footage from my HVR Z7U camcorder into Final Cut Pro
I can Import the footage as an NTSC 720x480 signal.
One consistent answer is to make sure that in camcorders menu settings that the IN/OUT REC - iLINK SET is set to off.
No Luck, no communication with FCP in that mode.
That being said when cameras ilink is on I can import 740/480 NTSC video, not HDV.
Here’s where I’m at now
The video was shot in 1080i 30p onmini DV. With my Sony HVR Z7U Ican only import the video into FCP as a NTSC 720x480 signal. It looks great butnot in HDV?
I believe I have tried most every setting in my FCP audio video settings to import the HD footage into FCP. FCPseems to only recognize the camcorder in the NTSC mode.
Example - In FCP Audio /Video Settings
Sequence Preset - HDV 108030p
Capture Preset    - HDV
Device Control     - HDV FireWire Basic
Video Playback   - Only gives none or NTSC choices(I chose Apple FireWire)
With the setting above and Sony’s ilink off- window alert reads…
“Device is not connected or the capture preset is not set up correctly. You may still log offline clips. This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device.” The camcorder viewer reads the digital footage as 1080i 30p. So it’s not shot in DV footage.
With the iLink on - I get the same window alert. Unless I capture in NTSC
For me FCP will only log and capture the footage when the Capture and Device Control Presets are set to a NTSC format and the camcorder ilink is on. Hence an NTSC 720x480 signal is imported. Not HDV?

Someone mentioned using log and transfer. I use this with all my Compact Flash HD videos. I have found no info for importing HDV from mini DV in log and transfer with a (my) camcorder.

Gary, this is the Final Cut Pro X forum. You might try the other forum for FCP. Still, I have the Z5U Sony which is nearly identical to your camera except for the zoom as I recall. I think we have the same menu system. I see to recall there is a menu option that sets the output file format. Also you can set it to record in SD as well as I recall. I read my files in from tape to FCP X easily ... in high def. Best wishes.

Tomorrow we'll have to capture a lot of footage from a Sony FX1 HDV.
I have no experience with this camcorder.
What are the best capture settings in FCP ?

The best capture settings are those that match how you shot the footage.
If it is HDV1080i/60, then obviously you elect the capture preset.

Why HDV capture in FCP 6.0,3 is not as clear as original footage?

I have tried several capture's settings for HDV footage captured in Sony HDR-HC7. Once it is in my computer's hard disk and ready to strt editing it seems that the video is not very clear mainly the edges of moving objetcs look if they were a liitle bit "dreagged". I ve been told in the Final Cut Training course that the defect is only possible to be corrected in Color program . It fact it is reduced a little when the filter "Film Look" is applied but it does not look as good as the original footage. Is there something I should need to do?. Thanks

ONLY JUDGE THE QUALITY OF YOUR MATERIAL ON AN EXTERNAL BROADCAST MONITOR, OR AT LEAST A TV.
The Canvas shows you what happens after the codec you are working with has been applied. The Viewer shows you the material in its native format. Once you drop the footage from the Viewer into the timeline, it inherits the attributes of the sequence. If it is a DV sequence, the footage will render out as DV.
1. Disable overlays on the Canvas.
2. Make sure you've rendered everything (no green bars at the top of the timeline).
Video playback requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or broadcast monitor routed thru your camera or deck.
NOW...seeing that you are working with HDV, the only way you are going to be able to see the actual quality of what you have, you will need an HD capture card and HD monitor. Matrox MXO plus Apple Cinema Display is a cheap way to go, works with laptops. Or if you have a MacPro, then the Decklink Intensity and HDTV would be a good inexpensive choice. other than that...www.aja.com www.decklink.com

Capturing footage to FCP 6.0.1 from Sony HVRZ1U HD Camera

I'm doing an HD project using a Sony HVRZ1U camera. I'm capturing footage from a Sony HDV GV-HD700 deck. I get nothing in the viewer when I go to log and capture and I cannot capture anything when I press capture because there is no video signal. I can see video on the viewer for the deck. When I change the settings on the deck from AV-DV out, I can see a stretched version in DV quality when I change the settings. I just cannot see a HDV signal to my computer. What are the correct settings for capturing this format? I've tried all the various possibilities and haven't been successful. The deck is connected to the computer via firewire to the HDV/DV iLink cable. Is this deck compatible with FCP? Is the video too much info for the computer?

When setting any Sony HDV device to output HDV you should disconnect the ilink/wirefire cable first, in the menu find Rec In/Out and set the ilink Conv to OFF for HDV. Then connect to the computer when both computer and deck are turned off.
If you have 6.0.1 then why not updated to the latest version, if you do update you will also need to update Quicktime.
