[4k raw (dng), up to 300fps, 12bits] open hardware camera, crowdfunding campaign now!!!

hey guys,
i just wanted to ask if someone of you already knows about this project and what you think of its potential:
AXIOM Beta: The first open digital cinema camera | Indiegogo
The guys from apertus.org had their alpha prototype up and running
in not even six month and now they are crowdfunding for the
development of the beta version.
what do you think about it?
i think it is great and will definitely enrich the market and
add gives unpredictable room for development!
(who knows with what crazy features the community will come up,
once they get an unleashed 4k open hard and open software camera!)
the guys from magic lantern are already involved in development,
so expect real great and feature rich firmware here,
as now they can realize what they (and many of us!) have dreamed of for a looooong time!
will you support this campaign by telling as much people about it,
or by donating some money for the development?
(i already bought one !!!)

  • RAW images in Lightroom aren't opening in camera raw in Photoshop.  Instead, I have to open the image in Finder before it will open in Camera Raw in Photoshop.  How can I correct that?

RAW images in Lightroom aren't opening in camera raw in Photoshop.  Instead, I have to open the image in Finder before it will open in Camera Raw in Photoshop.  How can I correct that?

Your question is a little unclear. In a "normal" Lightroom/Photoshop workflow the raw images do not open from Lightroom into Camera Raw. Lightroom has all of the Camera Raw functionality in the develop module. When you choose to open an image in Photoshop, and Lightroom and Photoshop are synchronized (i.e. referencing the same version of Camera Raw) then Camera Raw is simply used to interpret the Lightroom adjustments as the image is transferred to Photoshop. If Camera Raw is an older version then Lightroom offers you the choice to open the image or create a PSD or TIF file that includes all of the Lightroom adjustments. But in either case, opening in Camera Raw is not part of the workflow. It is possible to open the image as a smart object or convert the image to the smart object in Photoshop and then open it in Camera Raw. That is done from within Photoshop or is one of the open options in Lightroom. If you choose to go the smart object route the image first has to be opened in Photoshop and then from there you can open it in Camera Raw.

  • When opening a 6x4 landscape orientation raw (.dng) file in Photoshop CS5, it will automatically crop to a 4x6 orientation.  How can I change this?  I did not have this problem before now.

I need to know how to correct this so it doesn't automatically change the orientation.

That's new to me. I usually use the standalone dng converter to convert any raws to dng. Then I can open in Photoshop. Since I have never had this problem, the best I can do is to get you close to a fix if I don't have an exact answer. There is also a Camera Raw forum that can better advise you.
Adobe Camera Raw  Also since you mention Lightroom, see if they know anything. Photoshop Lightroom
Since I'm most experienced in Photoshop, I can only hand out stock troubleshooting that would just miss the problem. Photoshop CS5 does host ACR. Is this happening when you open the dng in ACR from Lightroom, and not after you open the dng from ACR into Photoshop?
Finally when a dialog box isn't working correctly. It's the Alt key on your keyboard that would change the Cancel button into Reset in ACR. It might not work if you are using a Bluetooth keyboard. (My screen capture keys won't let me show the Reset button)
So try that and if it fails, check out the other forums. If no one else joins this thread, I should tell you I"m out of ideas, can't seem to locate an answer, and I don't want to hold you up.

  • Dng. files from LR to PS CC ok Can't open in Camera Raw?

I have LR 5.7 and can edit my dng. files in PS CC but I can only get Camera Filter not full camera raw w/ all the tools. I am a PC user, BTW.
How do I open full Camera raw for a dng. file?
    Thanks, very frustrated.
    Chris

Because it was edited in lightroom first, photoshop knows enough to bypass camera raw since the controls are identical. If you open the dng file using the normal way like any other format, then it would open in camera raw first.
Keep in mind if you already did any editing in lightroom, those edits needs to be saved to that dng file before you can do the above otherwise camera raw and photoshop will not see the edits you did.
To save a file in lightroom select the file in the library and use ctrl-s to save.
If you do the above, lightroom will not automatically see the changes done in camera raw or photoshop. In library view there will be an icon in the thumbnails corner. This appears when changes to the metadata do not match that of lightroom's database. Clicking the icon should provide a dialog box asking if you want to update lightroom or leave it unchanged.
If you do a folder full, you can sync that folder to update all of them. Keep in mind syncing overwrites your changes in lightroom so make sure that is what you want to do.
I personally try to make it a habit to save all the images from lightroom, just so I don't get any surprises when syncing. There is an icon in the corner of those that need saving.

  • LR3 DNG Edit in Photoshop Does Not Open in Camera Raw

I have LR 3.2 64 bit and CS5 v12.0.1 64 bit and Camera Raw 6.2 under Windows 7. I do 95% of my editing in Lightroom. I do occasionally choose "Edit in Photshop" and in the past a DNG or CR2 image opened in Camera Raw (at least I think that is the case). Recently however, I noticed that if I have a DNG or a CR2 file, right click, and select "Open in Photoshop..." it opens the file directly in Photoshop, not in Camera Raw. I have tried deleting my LR3 preference, deleting my CS5 preferences, and deleting both, but the behavior does not change. Does anyone have an idea to explain this?
    Thanks,
    Alan.

Thanks for the quick response. For some reason I was thinking that it had happened that way in the past, but now that I think about it, I guess there would really be no reason for it to open in Camera Raw. Sorry for the unnecessary question.
    Alan.

  • Why are my RAW dng files opening in photoshop as 8 bit?

I am shootng on the canon 5 D Mark II.
On other Mark II camera bodies that I used in the past, the dng files are 16 bit. Why are mine 8 bit, and how can I change it IN CAMERA to 16 bit (I know how to convert it in photoshop,)
    thanks

DNG is an Adobe standard which stands for "Digital NeGative".  Adobe supports the format and have also contributed it as an open standard (free to use, they provide free DNG converters, they also state that it's "royalty free" if you were a developer and wanted to include the standard in a product, etc.)
You can find more information on it (and download Adobe's own free DNG converter software) here:  http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/extend.displayTab2.edu.html
And while it's supported by several companies even outside Adobe, it isn't adopted by Canon or Nikon -- they continue to create files in their own formats (.cr2 for Canon and .nef for Nikon).
Are you using Adobe's DNG Converter or something else?
JPEG is an 8-bit format (there is no option for anything other than 8-bit if you shoot JPEG).
CR2 (Canon RAW) is a 14-bit format on your specific camera.
If you shoot RAW and copy the CR2 files to your computer, you've got 14-bit data (there is no option on your camera to change the bit-depth.)    There are options to shoot in alternate RAW formats such as S-RAW1 & S-RAW2 (don't use those if what you _really_ want is "RAW").
Canon "Digital Photo Professional" (aka "DPP") came on the media CD bundled with your camera and can open all formats that your camera can create... but 3rd party software wont necessarily support all the formats.  Everyone, of course, supports JPEG.  RAW is supported via RAW updates from the some vendors (e.g. Adobe provides RAW updates but usually only for their latest versions of software).   The S-RAW formats are often not supported by 3rd parties.
It looks like RAW support for the 5D II was added in Adobe Camera RAW (ACR) v5.2.  That was back in the days of Photoshot CS4.  If you have CS4 or later (or any version of Lightroom) and you keep up with the "Adobe Camera RAW" updates then Photoshop would be able to open the Canon .CR2 files from your camera in their native format and would not need to have them converted to ".DNG" format.
Canon DPP will allow you to convert your RAW files into TIFF (which is also a non-lossy format).

  • I am unable to open raw files from my Canon T1i in Adobe Camera Raw of my version CS3 of Photoshop.  I have tried to update my ACR by downloading version 4.6 from the Adobe website but I am still unable to open raw files, just JPEG.  Is there a way to use

I am unable to open raw files taken on my Canon Rebel T1i in my version of Photoshop CS3.  When I import raw files into Bridge they come up as patches with CR2 on them and when clicked on, a notice comes up stating that Photoshop does not recognize these files.  I tried to update my Adobe Camera Raw by downloading version 4.6 from the Adobe Website, but when I clicked on the plus-in, I got another message that Photoshop does not recognize this file.  I spoke with a representative from Canon who said that I could not update CS3 and that I should subscribe to the Cloud.  I would prefer to use my CS3, if possible.  Can anyone advise me what to do?

The T1i was first supported by Camera Raw 5.4 which is only compatible with CS4 and later

  • I upgraded my camera and opening a camera raw file no longer works

I went from a Nikon D3000 to a Nikon D5200.  I have an old version of Elements (version 8) and I no longer can open a camera raw file.  I tried finding an answer in the support area but am not sure I found what I needed to know.  Since my camera is new and didn't exist at the time I purchased Elements does that mean that my old version doesn't support my camera?

You need to buy PSE12 or Lightroom 5.
Alternatively, download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.2
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.2
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

  • Can't open in camera raw in Bridge

When in Bridge, if I try to use File/open in Camera Raw, I get the follwing error message "Bridges' parent application is not active. Bridge requires that a qualifying product has been launched at least once to enable this feature."
It worked before: I disabled CS5 Sevice Manager earlier: would this cause my problem ? I used Adobe's own "fix" with the .dat file...

I reinstated CS5 SM and rebooted. It is running but the error message still comes up. If the file is a .dng and you use "open", it will open the file in PS camera raw but I want to open in Bridge camera raw... Any ideas anyone ? What does it mean about the qualifying product anyway ???

  • Why Won't my Raw files from my Nikon D5300 open in CS4?

I recently got a new Nikon D5300 and shot in raw for the first time today.  When I tried to view the images with photoshop CS4, a pop up window appeared stating that photoshop does not recognize that type of file, and therefore cannot be opened. Is this a compatibility issue of photoshop vs. camera files or something else?  As a portrait photographer I shoot in RAW 90% of the time so I'm very desperate to get this resolved.

Yes, it's the never-ending struggle of software keeping up with hardware (cameras) and the eternal compatibility issues between them. Forces users into a never ending upgrade cycle to keep up.
Camera manufacturers use proprietary Raw files which are specific to each and every camera they make. Every camera is different. So Adobe has to retrospectively add support to the Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) plugin for each Raw file format on a camera by camera basis after the camera has been released to market.
The D5300 was first supported in Camera Raw 8.3

ACR8.3 is compatible with CS6 and newer. It is not compatible with CS4 and never will be.

  • I use a Nikon d610 and my Photoshop Elements 10 won't open in camera raw. How can I fix it? The camera version is 6.7.0339

i'm using a Nikon D610 now and Photoshop Elements 10 won't open files in camera raw. How can I fix the issue? The version of camera raw is 6.7.0339

    Hi,
The D610 requires camera raw 8.3 which is not compatible with your PSE 10.
You need to upgrade to PSE 12 (or later) or use the free Adobe DNG converter. The converter will take a flder containg your NEF files and converte them to DNG files. The DNG files can then be used by PSE 10.

raw plugin 8.2 doesn't open nikon d800 nef files in photoshop cc and bridge

How did you install the plugin?  You may want to try reinstalling it or installing the dng converter, as that is what has the camera formats.  ACR 8.2 is just the plugin for the mechanics of Camera raw.  Normally they should both install, but sometime the converter doesn't.
