4s muting itself

This headache is my iPhone 4s 32GB running latest IOS 7.1.2  mutes itself spontaneously!
For the temporary fix to unmute I have to go to settings/general/accessibility/assistive touch/device/unmute; all is then fine until anytime from 1 minute to random later I hear a short vibration and a silent mode banner and it's on silent again! Then have to go through the unmute process again or use assistive touch shortcut from screen which I've had to activate to save time.
Before you ask Do not disturb is not active, hardware is in perfect condition, Bluetooth is not connected and I've not attached any headphones.
I have reset and restored the phone and deleted most unused and recent apps, but the problem persists so I have a phone that, in general, will not ring! Defeats the main point of having a phone!
Any new ideas? I've scoured the online forums to no avail.

  • Why is my computer muting itself?

my computer isn't letting me hear music its muting itself

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Some may not apply to your model. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. Other third-party software that has been reported to interfere with sound output includes "Boom" and "Samsung Kies." If applicable, uninstall according to the developer's instructions (not by dragging something to the Trash.)
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select Built-in Output from the list on the left. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them.
    7. If a red light is visible in the audio-out port when sound should be playing, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by the warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Recreate your settings in the Sound preference pane.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    14. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    15. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • Random Muting after upgrade to v3.0.1

Ever since I updated to v3.0.1 my phone is having trouble both calling and receiving calls. The phone keeps muting both the ear speaker and mic. I can click it into external speaker mode, but the phone keeps muting itself... even after a couple of seconds and I have to keep hitting the speaker button. It makes using the phone nearly impossible. Does anybody else have this problem?

I have the same problem, only the kicker here is that I have had it on two phones now. I noticed the problem on my original iPhone after the update to 3.0.1 and called apple to try and get a solution. They worked me through the whole process of turning radios on and off and then finally restoring the phone to factory settings, all to no avail. They shipped me out a new phone on Saturday and it arrived Monday. Switched out the SIM and went about my business. 2nd call in after the switch, the same thing. The person I'm calling can hear me, but I can't hear them. So, this says to me that this is not a "debris in the headphone jack" problem. Also, several others that I have spoken with have this exact same problem and it all started after 3.0.1. So, here's to hoping that Apple will get a fix out soon. Sounds like they have a problem on their hands.

  • Iphone 6 is muting speakerphone automatically.

This problem is getting pretty exhausting. If I am on a phone call, using soeakerphone, the mute will sometimes engage for no reason. Anywhere from  2-10 minutes into a call when I am not touching the phone even. On a couple occasions, I have been looking at the phone and watched it suddenly turn on mute for no reason.
Additionally, today I was on an extended call (45 minutes) on speakerphone. I watched as the mute engaged automatically on three occasions during the call AND the contacts were displayed. All while the phone sat on a flat table and I watched from a distance.
What would cause this?? I've been conscious of what words I'm using and it doesn't seem like anything would be listening to activate them. It's very annoying when you're not paying attention and talk for a few minutes before realizing the other party heard nothing. Any ideas!??

I am having this same problem, only I'm using my earphones and the built in mic on them instead of speaker phone.  But randomly muting itself while I'm watching with nothing near my phone to be causing it.  And I also noticed the randomly pulls up my contact list "feature" too.
    I'm on Verizon, iPhone 6 IOS 8.2
I've googled and so far found nothing but this post to indicate anybody else having this issue.  Quite frustrating.

  • Sound is muted and locked on my Mackbook Air

My Macbook Air is four months old and the sound is now muted and locked.
After reading all the forums, I've reset the PRAM (although I have since learned this won't affect it) and also the SMC power management with no success. I have reset, turned the power on and off and have also plugged an unplugged headphones into the jack.
I believe it muted itself after I started watching a VEVO video on a film makers website.
I'm currently travelling and don't have time to leave it at a Mac Store for it to be repaired.
Does anyone have any potential solutions?
    Much appreciated,
    James

    Remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.

  • Imovie Audio random muting somebody please help

I was making a video using an Imac in Imovie and I put some of the clips in slow motion and some in fast and when it's switching between those different speeds it mutes itself I figured it was a computer problem so I finished editing and posted it on youtube but it mutes on youtube also. Also when I add sound effects it would show a little yellow sign with an "!" in the middle. That could be just from downloading free sounds on untrusted sites though. But back to the main problem the audio is muting itself when I play it by itself but if I pause it and replay it at the beginning of the muted clip the audio plays until it hits another random mute somebody please help

Here goes jay2007, cheese cake Dig-002 on a M.P. and Welcome to the forum.
Sorry to says but you have to do a down-grade lets say to 10.4.6. then hop to 10.4.9.
So from your installation Disk on the M.P. use Disk one, even though it will say Disk two will be needed.
Press Skip when it goes to check the Disk in saving time.
Then make sure the first two Tabs is check after selecting Option as if you were to do a new install of OSX,
however it will only erase the OSX your using right now, then after, it will leave your desk-top same as you had it in 10.4.11. except you'll be on 10.4.6.
Then from there you need 10.4.9.
Not Delta 10.4.9. but the Combo 10.4.9 as its been Digi-Design officially tested version of OSX that is very much supported.
    Let the Games begin!

  • Why does my 4s phone mute itself? I've reset the setting like other posts have suggested.

Why does my 4s phone mute itself? I also have a hard time hanging up after a call. The screen goes blank like it's in a sleep mode. I have to use 2 hands to make it hang up--one to hold the home button and the other to hit the end bar. I've "Reset All Settings" in General Settings like other posts have suggested. This worked for a short period of time but now the phone is back to muting itself. Why does this happen?

Basic troubleshooting steps clearly outlined in the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as NEW.
If you've been through ALL these steps and you still have problems, then you'll need to bring your phone into Apple.

  • Microphone does not work after restarting computer

I just received the Creative Xmod soundcard yesterday after using an Icemat siberia usb headset sound card for a couple months. The sound is a lot better with the creative soundcard however, if I restart my computer and go back into ventrilo, my microphone does not work. It doesnt make any sound when I talk into it (almost as if it muted itself) but it hasnt. I check my sound settings and everything is the way it should be.....but the mic isnt producing any sound. It is not my headphones that is causing the problem because I have never had this problem with my old icemat soundcard. I am currently using :
    Sennheiser PC350 headset
    Windows XP Home Edition
    The newest version of Ventrilo

That is how I have ventrilo setup. A friend of mine said I should Mux set to Record Control, but it only gives me the option for Wave In =/

  • I-TRIGUE L3500 Problem

Hi all I've had my L3500's for about 8-12 months and just recently the volume has been muting itself or turning itself down to a very low volume. It does it with and without headphones plugged in and also if I plug my speakers into another device. When it happens I have turn the speakers off and then back on again and about 8/10 it will fix it, but then at another random interval it will do it again. I don't know why its started happening because i've had the same setup for ages and it just happened over the weekend. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a solution to it's Any help is appreciated Ian

  • Help no sounds at all on my iPad

For the second time in a week now my sound is completely off.  The mute/lock rotation switch is set correct, the mute on the task bar is not on and my volume rocker is all the way up. I have no system sounds, no music, no app sounds, no YouTube sounds nothing at all unless I plug in my headphones. I have restored, reset and restarted it and nothing seems to help. The sound worked about 2 hours ago and its like it just muted itself.
This happened a few days ago and it just came back on its own and was good for a few days.
I have been reading through the forums about similar problems and tried everything I could but nothing seems to help.
Please no posts about the stupid notifications mute switch, Or the task bar mute I have checked them both repeatedly and they are correct. If anyone has something else to try I am more then willing otherwise I guess it time to go and get a replacement iPad.
    Thanks

Try a hard reset (Hold the home and power button together untill the iPad turns off) or sync it with iTunes, if those don't work I'd take it to the Apple Store and have them look at it.

  • Unable to un-mute PCM in alsa

Hi, recently audio stopped working. It maybe after the upgrade of alsa [2010-07-23 07:19] installed alsa-utils (1.0.23-2), but not sure. It is a SiS SI7012 Chip: C-Media Electronics CMI9739 and has been working for a while without problems.
I checked in xfce4-mixer and found PCM muted. Tried to unmute, but it just muted itself again. Tried the same in alsamixer and could not unmute. Also tried as root. I am member of audio
I have tried restarting alsa as root /etc/rc.d/alsa restart and got this
    /usr/sbin/alsactl: set_control:1388: Cannot write control '2:0:0:PCM Playback Volume:0' : Operation not permitted
Also as root amixer sset PCM 90% unmute -d
    amixer: Invalid command!
Tried on the IRC with a few suggestions, tried setting card options again, but still dead. Hoping someone here may have some clues.

I tried running alsaconf (root) and that does not change things, but I have made some progress. It seems that stopping X and running alsamixer from a tty and  un-muting PCM fixes the problem. It is still fixed going back into a desktop. After rebooting and then going into XFCE once again PCM is muted an cannot un-mute. Weird!

  • I'm getting errors - no drive, no sound - what's going on?

I've been using Tiger for months now with no problems at all, updating the software as necessary but with no other software additions. Yesterday I couldn't burn a CD, I kept getting the error message "error 0X80020025, disk drive not supported" This is the same drive that was factory fitted and has lasted four years so far... it took three attempts before it would recognise a blank CD or burn one, but after that I got the error message again.
today I had no sound on any application, and found that the audio had muted itself.
What's going on? How can I check the operating software, and more importantly repair it without losing everything? The most reliable OS I've ever had... don't want it to foul up now!
    Heather

    Hi, Heather.
    1. I'd not panic yet that something is going amiss system-wide. The Mute issue may have simply been due to you accidentally pressing the Mute key on the keyboard.
    2. The Error Code 0X80020025 was a known bug in 10.4.1 and earlier, corrected in 10.4.2. However, since you're running 10.4.5, there are some additional issues that can cause this problem. Assuming the burner in question is the factory-installed optical drive that came with your Mac:2.1. Corrupted Finder preferences: See my "Finder Issues? How to delete its preferences" FAQ.
2.2. PRAM or NVRAM issues: see "Macintosh: How to Reset PRAM and NVRAM."
Note that given the age of your Mac, PRAM/NVRAM issues may arise again if the internal battery needs replacement: the internal battery provides an infinitesimal amount of power to retain settings in PRAM:• The replacement battery for your Mac can be found in See "Macintosh Family: Batteries and Part Numbers, Part 2" for replacement battery part numbers.
    • The batteries can usually be found in-stock at Radio Shack stores in the US.
    • See "Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002): How to Replace The Battery for instructions on replacing the battery."3. As a general checkup for your Mac, consider:3.1. Run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
3.2. Run the Apple Hardware test that came with your Mac. See my "Apple Hardware Test" FAQ for comprehensive advice on using the Apple Hardware Test in troubleshooting, including running the test in Loop Mode.Again, I suspect these are two separate problems, though if the internal battery is due for replacement, it can cause other issues, e.g. clock loses time if not set to a Network Time Server, issues with peripherals such as your optical drive, startup issues, etc.
Note that some of the information above is from the "Burning CDs and DVDs" chapter of my book, Troubleshooting Mac® OS X, Tiger Edition.

  • I cant get sound from my external speakers.

Ive checked the system preferences and cant find them in the sound output list. Also tried restarting several times and put the speaker cable to the jack speaker input without any success. Help appreciated!
Got it working. For some reason the output had muted itself. Just had to un-mute and voila...

I'd say it +should be+ something they are not surprised to hear about, but I've read posts on the forums where Apple tech claimed to "never have seen a problem like this before" for issues with MBP batteries - and this was after the 1.2 update release where Apple formally acknowledged battery problems.
So, don't be surprised if the support tech claims to be. But they will certainly have no trouble fixing it. If you're close to an Apple Store, make a Genius Bar appointment and they'll fix you up. Or call AppleCare and they'll arrange for you to ship it in.

  • Sounds keeps unmuting after boot

This is on a 2.8Ghz MBP with 8GB RAM on 10.6.8:
Had to reinstall the OS because of an issue that caused Address Book to become corrupted.
Now that everything is re-installed the sound keeps UN-muting itself after a reboot.
I've done all the regular maintenance routines:
    -  Ran all the Onyx maintenance and cleaning routines.
    -  Manually did a permissions repair
    -  Used DiskWarrior to repair directory
    -  etc...
I also setup a TEST user account with admin permissions; the sound keeps unmuting itself in that account also.
I know it's not a hardware problem because this just started yesterday AFTER I reinstalled the OS.
Any suggestions - OTHER than doing a clean install or taking it to the Genius Bar?

I never found an answer to fix the sound driver issue but I did find a quick fix - which technically could be applied to several "this doesn't work right anymore" issues:
    -  I first verified that no user or system preferences (that were searchable) were corrupted.
    -  I used Carbon Copy Cloner to backup the entire drive (OS, apps... the whole enchilada).
    -  I did a CLEAN install (drive wipe first) of Snow Leopard including all the relevant updates and made sure things all worked smoothly - including my sound card issue.  I made a temporary user account with admin permissions.
    -  Using Migration Assistant I transferred all my data back over to the MBP.
    -  Once I verified all was well with the transfer and things were still working properly I then deleted the temp user account.
Now the system is back to normal.  Total time:  About 1.5 hours.  That was a much faster option than taking it to the Genius Bar or doing a clean install of *everything*.
The only caveat here is that if you're having issues on your system that's being caused by an poorly designed application and you transfer it back to your newly installed OS you'll have whatever problem existed all over again.  For me I knew all my apps were stable (Adobe, Apple and several other third-party apps for video/audio editing) and they weren't the root of the problem.
