4S  uses edge network instead of 3G

New 4S uses Edge network when 3G is available.
IPhone 4 stays on 3G in same locations.

I have the exact same issue. I am using both a 4 and 4s and while the 4 is running full bars on 3G, the 4s will be stuck on Edge. I have to turn off and on airplane mode, and than a full bar 3G signal is acquired. For some reason, the 4s does not seem to want to switch back onto 3G once it has moved onto Edge.

Siri does Not work on the iPad 2.  iOS 7 is not even out yet, so we have no way of knowing if you'll be able to upgrade to it.

  • Cannot receive calls when using Edge network for data?

    Hi,
This afternoon someone was trying to reach me urgently and all her calls to my iPhone went straight into my voicemail. My phone never rang and never showed missed calls.
I spoke to Aaron at Apple, thinking there might be a problem with my phone, and he told me that when the Edge network is in use, then the phone will not ring and calls will be routed straight to voicemail.
Is this really expected behavior? I was not aware of it.
    iPhone 8GB

This has nothing to do with EDGE all other phones will notify you and pause the connection. i posted about this 2 days ago but the thread got deleted.
here is a video that proves this, the noise is from the GSM but the user is clearly on the edge network.
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=NMm2AY-_TTY
this is from Tier 2 suport at Apple.
Everyone having this issue should call 1-800-MY iPhon. Ask to speak to Tier II support, the person you get may try to help, and may need to give you a case number. You'll probably have to wait a while on hold.
I just spent an hour on the phone with Tier I & II. The tier I guy started by saying that when you use EDGE it will always go to voicemail. I told him, I was on a user forum & some people said they don't have the issue. He then tested it on his phone & experienced the direct to v-mail issue. We talked about how this was a real problem & how both of our nokia phones didn't have this issue (he actually had the E-61 also). He gave me a case number & transferred my to tier II. The tier II guy told me that this was a software issue. That a pop-up needs to be designed into the software to allow the user the option to disconnect the data connection & accept the voice call, or not. I told him that I'd read on a user forum that some users get voice calls while using EDGE. He said that if they are using you tube the call will automatically interrupt & switch out of you tube. We then tested this on my iPhone & it worked (i.e. the call interupted you tube). He said the software currently decides to disconnect data or send calls to voice mail during EDGE transmissions based on what the user is doing. Phone calls take priority over you tube & widgets (stock & weather)but safari and e-mail take priority over phone calls. He said the thought was, it would be more annoying to users to be in the middle of sending an e-mail and having mail disconnected for a phone call, than having the call go to voicemail. The ideal solution is to have a choice (like other phones allow) but right now the iPhone software does not have a pop-up designed allowing the user to accept the call or keep the data connection. (He seemed to be familiar with this on other phones while being tethered to a macbook to use their data connections & getting voice calls during downloads).
He said he was submitting this to the engineering group & said the more people that call tier II about this & submit it as an issue via online feedback, the higher priority it will get to be addressed in the first software update. So if you want to see this fixed start calling and submitting the issue http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html in as much detail as possible (specifically say that other existing phones Nokia S60s etc. have this function).
and here is a thread that is discussing this serious problem. note it is now many pages long.

  • Airdrop using wireless network instead of direct connection

    Hello,
Last night my fiancee and I were moving her backed up music folder from my computer onto her new macbook air '11. My computer is an '11 13" pro. When we were both connected to her wireless network and initiated the airdrop file transfer, it was using the wifi network to send the data which caused the older wrt54g router to max out on bandwidth so the transfer was going really slow (1 MB/s).
Then when I realized the transfer (27 GB) was going to take longer than I was going to be there, I decided to try and get the airdrop to work directly. I eventually had to delete her network from my list of favorites in network settings, turn off wi-fi, and turn it back on. Then once my pro was NOT connected to any networks, I initiated the transfer to her computer, and it was going closer to 10 MB/s. Thus, it was using the true direct connection airdrop is SUPPOSED to use.
Now, nowhere does any of the Apple documentation say "...and then you must disconnect from the wireless network common to the computers..." so I am left wondering if this is some bug or why I had to jump through these hoops in order to get the full transfer potential.
Has anyone else experienced this? And/or does this method work for anyone else?
    Thanks,
    William

There are only a few devices that have multiple uses. I use a DLink DWL G703AP on my daughter's iMac for wireless connectivity. If you look it up on the DLink site you can see its capabilities. I am sure there are other devices with similar capabilities.

  • Wi-Fi: do I need to register every time I use WiFi network?

This is basic question but I'm not quite sure about using Edge network and WiFi network on my iPhone.
    Mostly, I set
    - WiFi "on"
    - Ask to join networks "on"
So, always available WiFi networks come up when I use my iPhone. But I usually cancel to use it and just use iPhone on Edge network.(feel like internet is slow.)
Do I need to register or sign-up whenever I use Wi Fi network?
And if I see 'lock' sign with Wi Fi network, do I need to know their password? Do I need to join their WiFi network and they charge fee?
    Thanks in advance for help!

Do I need to register or sign-up whenever I use Wi Fi network?
Depends on the available Wi-Fi network. If at work or at the house of a friend or relative, there is no registration required but if the network is password protected, you must be given the password required to access the network.
And if I see 'lock' sign with Wi Fi network, do I need to know their password?
Yes - this means the network or password protected.
Do I need to join their WiFi network and they charge fee?
This depends on if the provider of the network requires payment for access. As an example, Starbucks uses T-Mobile for their Wi-Fi network available at each store but accessing it is not free and requires payment.
Some independent coffee shops, chain restaurants and businesses offer free Wi-Fi access for their customers and if not password protected, all you need to do is join the network - accept it and you will have access.

  • Edge 95 MXP always use multisite option instead multiway

Hello, we have a edge 95 mxp were we have configure multiway but when we want to make a conference call always use multisite option instead of multiway. Our deployment scenario is based on the following scenario: Deployment with TelePresence Conductor connected to Unified CM (page38) from the following deployment guide:http://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/td/docs/telepresence/infrastructure/vcs/config_guide/X8-2/Cisco-TelePresence-Multiway-Deployment-Guide-X8-2-XC2-4.pdf.

  • Use Top/Left instead of webkit transform in Adobe Edge Animate

I had a nice simple interaction using Adobe Edge Animate with jquery ui draggable and droppable. You drag boxes from one area into other places. All worked fine.
Then, I decided to add an entrance animation for the boxes. That ruined everything because jquery draggable animates the top: left: values of your object, but somehow adding animation in Edge made it set top: and left: to 0 and use webkit transformX / Y.
So now as soon as I begin dragging, the box jumps way down because draggable is animating the top: left:, and Edge Animate is keeping the transform
Is there a way to force EA to use top: left: for animation? Note, part of the box entrance includes a rotation, so possibly that's why it decided to use transform so it could do the X / Y and rotate all in one.
    Any ideas?

I'm sorry, the blog post was not helpful for this situation.  The problem is that in AE you can animate "Top" and "Left", but you have no control over whether that becomes a transformX /Y or a change to the css top: left:.   AE makes it's own mind up.  It seems that once you somthing other than just move the item (eg rotate or scale) it decides to stop using top /left and combine it all into a single transform including x y and rot.   AE does not let you choose to animate the css top: left: property and also add a css transform for rot.
nevertheless, I've found a working hack for now.  when the drag starts, I add a class
    .notransition {
      -webkit-transform:none!important;
      transform:none!important;
and so the transform is erased and the drag works perfectly.  The weird thing is that after I drop, I DO NOT remove the class.  It stays for the remainder of the time.  Now that I think about it, it makes sense, since the transform is none and the top: and left have been permanently modified by jquery-ui draggable.
If I still wanted to do any further animation after that, I imagine it would get very weird.
so anyway, ability to force x and y transformations to use top: left: instead of transform would be a key feature for a (near) future release.

  • Can you use the data while NOT on the EDGE network?

I am wondering if when I travel through SD and ND I will be able to use my data (email, web, maps...etc.) I am in Minneapolis on the EDGE network, but I'm concerned that in Sioux Falls, SD no a GPRS network I won't be able to use 1/2 the functions on my phone.
Before release the rumor was that it would work, but has anyone actually tried it yet?

So essentially you're asking... if there's no Wi-Fi or EDGE coverage will you be able to use the data network features of the phone?
In short... from my experience the answer appears to be "no, it won't work." Allow me to elaborate:
I disabled Wi-Fi access and found an EDGE dead spot where the phone could not connect to the EDGE data network but I could place a phone call. When I attempted to launch Mail and sync, I got a message saying that my IMAP server could not be reached. When attempted to launch a website, I received an error message stating that the server could not be reached.
End result, I was unable to use any of the data network features of the phone. So it would appear... that the answer is no. It will not use the basic GPRS undearlining network. However it's quite possible that your results may vary.

  • Texting and actively using the edge network

if im actively using the edge network, like if im using an App like AOL Radio or searching on the web...and then someone texts me during that time, what happens to the text? will it show up after im done?....
    i have the original iPhone

Yes, it will show up when you have finished actively accessing the web. It's a limitation of Edge.

  • Do you get charged for using AT&T's EDGE network ?

Or can you only use WI-FI for free?
Also, I'm trying to use wi-fi at college, but I need some kind of number to give to my teacher so then he can give me a password to unlock it. Any ideas? Thx!

You can use EDGE for internet access anywhere that you have cell phone reception.
You can use WiFi access only when within range of an available WiFi network that you have been granted access to - either a free WiFi network (password protected or not) such as the WiFi network at your school or via a paid WiFi network that you have paid the required fee in order to gain access.
WiFi networks have limited range - many within 150 feet or so of the wireless router which I've found to be somewhat less with the iPhone when compared to accessing the same using a laptop with wireless card but WiFi access provides much faster internet access or data transfer speed.
EDGE access is similar to a fast dial-up connection.

  • Shall i use mobile network 3G instead of Wi-Fi for iPhone Remote app?

    Hi,
I installed Remote application on my iPhone 4 (iOS 6). It's throws "you must to connect a WiFi network to control iTune or Apple TV". Can i use remote app use by mobile 3G network instead of WiFi network? Please suggest me.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Suresh Balakrishnan .

No, you can't. The phone has to be on the same network as your Mac and Apple TV. Neither of those devices can connect via cellular.

  • Can I ditch my landline internet service and use a network extender & hotspot instead?

I live in a rural area with lousy landline internet access but a pretty good cell signal. I've heard that a person can use the combination of internet extender & jetpack for internet access. Is that correct, or do I need to have DSL in order to use the network extender?
And is it necessary to spend $250 for a network extender? It looks like they ordinarily run around $50. Why is the Verizon one so steep?

The network extender requires a landline internet connection to function correctly.

  • Trouble with incoming calls while surfing the web using EDGE....

I'm aware that while I'm using EDGE to surf the net on my phone, that my calls may go to voicemail. This is fine, but when someone calls me while I'm using EDGE to surf the net, they don't even get a ring tone, or anything to let them know that the call is coming through to my phone. I've tried this myself, and all I get is 30-45 seconds of dead air, then a click that sounds like the call has been disconnected, and THEN my voicemail picks up.
I'm concerned that the caller will think that there's a problem with my phone, instead of waiting the time it takes for the voicemail to pick up. Is there some sort of setting on my phone that I can change that will let the caller hear the rings so they know that the call is actually going through, or is this just a random glitch with my phone or the network?
I'm guessing it's not something that can be changed, but I've got my fingers crossed. Thanks in advance!

There is a couple things you can try on your iPhone. Beyond this you may wish to call AT&T and see if there is a setting they can look at regarding this dead error. Maybe there is a time of dead silence vs sending right to voicemail.
Sometimes you can set a Music tone to be heard instead. But if this is used for business it would not be very professional.
    1. Settings- Toggle Airplane Mode ON for 1 min. Then turn off.
    2. Retest voicemail call to your phone
    3. Reboot iPhone, Hold Home Button down with the Sleep/Wake Button till you see the apple logo. Then let go. Now test your voicemail.
    4. Reset Network Settings, Settings-General-Reset- Reset Network Settings- Confirm, Test voicemail.
As a last test before calling AT&T trying performing a basic call to your phone at different times of the day. See if this occurs more in the morning, afternoon, evening. Etc. Might be able to narrow it down to Busy traffic.
Last resort again. Call AT&T have them check some settings on their end. And see if there is any small change they can do so they hear at least 1 ring tone before it hitting mail box.

  • Edge network running slooooooow

Updated my 1st gen IPhone to 3.0 yesterday. Today the EDGE network is running very slow when using Safari. Im located in western PA.
    Anyone else seeing issues???

After updating to 3.0 last night I found I was unable to access the Edge network. Instead I kept getting a message that I did not have a cellular data subscription. After trying several things I found that removing the sim card and reinstalling it I finally was able to access the Edge network again. It was really slow at first, very sluggish. SInce the, about 2 hours later it has gotten better and is at almost normal Edge speeds. Not sure this will help you, but at least you know you aren't the only one!

  • Is there a way to stop the Edge network from activating?  Overseas Travel

I am travelling in Europe and I do not want the EDGE network to be activated. But I can't find a way to turn off the Edge network. At $1 per KB, this is going to get expensive. I am using WiFi when I can, but the rest of the time, it's on Edge and with Yahoo push email, I end up with 50+ KB per day of traffic.
Does anyone have any ideas? When I leave the wifi area, I turn off my email. But there still seems to be traffic on the edge network (under Settings > Usage). I prefer to do my email only in a wifi zone.
    Anyone have any ideas?

I agree. I am currently in the UK and am contending with this. i turned off my e-mail as well but I will be contacting AT&T for a credit on all of the data transfer I invouluntarily incurred while here.
