4S Wifi Grayed Out - I feel abandoned by Apple

I have three iPhones 4s's for my family and me.  We have had them for less than two years.  Two of them have now lost Wifi.  I followed the steps on this Apple Support page:
iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim
None of the resets worked, so I went to an Apple Store.  They said sorry, it's a hardware problem.  We'll fix it for $200, otherwise, you're out of luck.  Are there any other possible solutions that I've missed?
An internet search, including many posts on this forum, suggests it's a pretty widespread problem.  I feel abandoned by Apple.  This is my first ownership experience with Apple products.  Do Apple products really only work for a little more than one year before developing problems?
Mike

Thanks for the intelligent response.  I certainly don't expect new phones, I just want mine to work as they were intended.  I do not have AppleCare coverage and am clearly out of warranty, so I did not think to go through those channels.   I was able to get in touch with Corporate Executive Relations and the best help they could offer was a full iPhone restore followed by a restore from backup (this step is not part of the above mentioned support page, but is a last ditch effort by the executive technical support staff to remedy the problem).  Unfortunately, that restore process did not solve the problem.  That is as far as they are willing to help.  They refuse to cover the hardware defect.
Again, thank you for your response, it is much appreciated.

Reset the network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Note: This will reset all network settings, including Bluetooth pairing records, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN, and APN settings.

  • Airport Time Capsule Caused iPhone Wifi Gray Out

My new Airport Time Capsule (2 TB) and my MacBook Pro connect via wifi, but my iPhone 4S (iOS 6.1.3 upgrade months ago - no problems) did not detect my TC.   The iPhone wifi icon disappeared while I was looking for my TC in the list of wifi signals and wifi is now grayed out in my iPhone Settings.  I tried the various remedies for wifi gray out many people apparently experienced upon iOS 6.1.3 upgrade, but none worked, not even delete/restore.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Has anyone heard of this happening during TC setup?  Thanks.

Apple claims the Airport Time Capsule had nothing to do with the iPhone gray out issue, which they say is an out of warranty iPhone hardware issue. The apparent solution is to purchase a new iPhone 4s for $199.
I had my iPhone a little over 500 days. Let's call it 500 even, which is 720,000 minutes or 43,200,00 seconds.
Qs: What is the probability that a wifi hardware flaw unrelated to my attempt to establish a wifi link to the TC would materialize in the very minute of a link attempt? What is the probability of witnessing the resulting the gray out the very second it occurred?
(I know some of you are thinking the probabilities are 100% for me. Very funny.)

  • This is a different type of the "wifi grayed out."

This is a different type of the "wifi grayed out." My Iphone experiences the same problem that others have, the wifi becomes grayed out and I am unable to click it. However, after five or so days the wifi miraculously returns to full functionality, but then returns to grayed out again. I went to the Apple store, and they said I had water damage (i am skeptical) because my phone has been no where near water. I did the "freezer" trick that some mention, and that got it to work for a bit but not long. I am assuming that  it is a hardware problem and not software, since everything else works fine. I have a 4s on the latest ios. Can someone help me before the wifi turns gray again? I don't want to have to buy a new phone if needed.

You need to follow the steps below:
iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim
If Apple have confirmed water damage then more than likely you will need to get a replacement.

  • No Wifi ... Wifi grayed out

I have a 16GB WiFi iPa2 model. Suddenly my Wifi connection dropped and after that Wifi option itself grayed out. I restarted reset the ipad but without result. Can anyone help me what the problem is?

This is a fairly common issue with the iOS devices, namely, the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2. Apple has characterized this as a "rare instance"; however, if you search community sites outside of Apple you will find that this issue is wide spread and the pages that feature "Fixes" recommend rather unorthodox approaches such as variously heating and then chilling your device. Something related to the temperature monitor on the iPad is connected in some strange way to the WIFI system. These pages have, in some cases (see YouTube) have upwards of 100,000 views. This means that roughly that many people are having this issue. Now, maybe 100,000 people is a drop in the bucket statistically where Apple's total sales volume is concerned; however, that is cold comfort for those experiencing what is really an equipment failure. Apple is not likely to recognize this until a class action suit is brought against them on this issue. Initial searches on this have shown many other class action suits but not for this particular issue. It would probably be most effective if launched within the USA and would force Apple to recognize the "significant" number of product failures.
If you have the cash then it will cost you anywhere between $200-$300 to have it fixed at which point you start thinking Landfill then a switch to Android or HP. As you can tell I have been rather frustrated by this myself. I must say that I own 7 iPads and 3 iPhones and 6 laptops and as a longtime Mac user, I have never had a product issue like this but that doesn't take away my frustration and anger at feeling taken advantage of on this one particular purchase.

  • Wifi grayed out!

Does anyone know where I can file a complaint? The story is, this Monday October the 25 I went into the apple store to get a replacement for my phone because it was over heating. So I got a replacement no problem. On the oct 26 I go to setup my wifi and it jut keeps searching for wifi found nothing. Even though my Mac book is connected to the same network.
Anyways so I call customer support and they have me go reset network settings in my phone. When it finally boots up the wifi tab is grayed out. So I call them back like I was instructed to use my case # and they still asking me what was going on? So I have to re-explain everything again. So I'm told to go to the genius bar to get a new replacement. So today oct 27 I drive 25 minutes to the apple store. I get there 10 minutes appointment was at 1030, I don't get seen tell 1050? was not crowed at all.
Anyways I get to the bar and tell the tech the issue he sees this and says well replace it. Goes in the back comes out and says sorry we don't have a replacement. Really? So he says i can send you to a different store. I was like I'm not driving all over the bay area to get a phone. So I ended up just going home with my wifi less phone and called apple support. They're going to send me a new but with a 400 dollar hold on my credit card. I feel miss treated and I have apple care.

It seems that they are resolving your issue.
It is very frustrating when something goes wrong, but they are replacing the iphone.
Perhaps when a little time passes, you will calm down a bit. It is unfortunate, but it sounds like they are doing what they can.
You can leave feedback for Apple at:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback
You could probably call the store or Apple support, if you still feel the need to complain.

  • 3rd Gen ipod touch wifi grayed out

So i went to Univeral studios, and I got super soaked throughout the whole day until 8pm. I had my ipod in my bag and i hadnt taken it out until i got home. And when i got home my wifi disappeared and so i checked my laptop and ps3 to see if it had wifi and it did except for my ipod. My ipod didnt find an servers so i tried resetting it. After that, the wifi settings happened to be disabled and said NO WIFI. I had restored it on my laptop 3 times and resetted to its factory settings four times and resetted the network settings twice. I even erased all content and settings and set it up as a new ipod on my laptop, but it still said no WIFI and now i don't know what to do now . Please help me out.

    See:
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
It is frequently a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
I would also try placing the iPod in a bag of uncooked rice for a couple of days to ensure the iPod is dry.

  • Wifi grayed out after update. Restored phone as new. How do I get data from iCloud without wifi?

My wifi was grayed out and my battery drains drastically after updating to 6.1.3.
I have tried all possible solutions to get my wifi back. However, nothing seems to work. I am now trying to (at least) get my battery back to normal. I read in other posts that restoring the iPhone as a new phone > drain battery > full charge might help.
I did the restore as new phone and do not want to restore from back up. I just like to manually back up some (not all) data I've lost and keep my phone like this, like new. How do i back up my messages and photos from iCloud if my phone wont connect to wifi?
    Any ideas?
Is there another way to get my photos and messages back aside from doing an iCloud backup?

You can't view or extract backed up data at iCloud.com. AFAIK, without a WiFi connection, there is no way to retrieve your data. You'd need another iPhone to restore your iCloud backup to in order to retrieve it. Of couse this would require either doing an out of warranty replacement for your existing phone, ot borrowing a phone from someone, erasing it, then setting it up using your Apple ID.
You could make an appointment at an Apple store to see what the genius bar can offer you.

  • Does iOS 8 fix the wifi 'grayed out' bug in iPhone 4S?

    Hi.
I have an iPhone 4S which is running iOS 7.1.2 . Apparently, the wifi was working before upgrading to ios 7.1.2 (from ios 6.1.3). The wifi option is 'Grayed out" in the Settings app and my Mac address is seen as 'N/A' . There are so many 'fixes' for it two of which are temporary (freezer fix and blow dryer fix) It's a really big inconvenience to not have a wifi connection especially when downloading some big files. For those who have used iOS 8 on their iphone 4S (developers et al) does the new and improved iOS version fix this bug? It's nerve racking because I dont know how to save SHSH blobs meaning I cant downgrade from iOS 7.1.2 to iOS 6.1.3 just to get my wifi working. My best bet right now is that iOS 8 will have a fix for this problem. Buying another iPhone is not an option for me right now as my cash is tied up in some projects. Please help.

    Ok guys,
I don't know if these helps but I'm going to describe what happened to me with these, first I must say I have an iphone 4S which when bought, the wifi was working fine. The Wifi grayed issue started happening right after I updated IOS version 7.1.1 to 7.1.2. At first I noticed the phone was becoming slow as **** and that my phone won't connect to any Wifis, so I switched my wifi off and my phone became fast again. If I happened to turn the wifi on again my iphone would just become slow again.
I went an try to look up the issue solution on internet forums and apple support page but noone seems to have definitive solution. Now I read the hairdryer and freezer method, but I don't trust it since, as apple points out, might lead to hardware damage but it kinda make sense to me that something might be wrong with the wifi chip. I read in another forum that if I just erase or restore (I can't quite remember right now the right name) the network configuration it might solve the problem, but it seems it doesn't work either.
I ran out of options and just waited for IOS 8 to come out and correct the problem, but it didn't. So I came to the conclusion that this is in no way, a hardware problem unless update 7.1.2 just damage hundreds or perhaps thousands of iphone 4S, which I think is rubbish. This is without a question a software issue, might be some software incompatibility with the iphone 4s wifi chip.
So to summarize all of these, what happened to me was:
    1) iphone 4S is version 7.1.1 - WiFi works OK
    2) Iphone 4S updates to version 7.1.2 - Wifi no longer works
    3) Iphone 4S updates to version 8.0 - Wifi still doesn't work
I tried the following to solve the issue:
    1) Reboot the device - Fail
    2) Restore Network configuration - Fail (grayes out the wifi)
    3) Update to IOS 8.0 - Fail
    4) Turn on Airplane mode and after 20 seconds off - (ungrayes the wifi but still cannot connect to any wifi)
What I am currently experiencing with IOS 8.0 (it happened also with 7.1.2)
    1) Trying to open "Settings" if wifi is on - it is slow 70% of the time
    2) Trying to open "Settings" if wifi is off - Opens up normally
    3) Trying to open "Settings>Wifi" if wifi is on - opens awfully slow and no wifi is listed
    4) Trying to open "Settings>Wifi" if wifi is off - opens up normally
I hope these helps you apple guys, please fix this issue as my iphone is spending my data plan since I cannot longer use WiFi.

  • Attempt to upgrade to OS6, lost wifi-grayed out

I tried to do the upgrade to the OS6 as requested on my iPod touch and lost wifi. I now can't add back my iTunes although my photos and apps still are showing intact. I did a full reset and actually had an Apple store employee do it and they could not fix it. My iPod Touch worked fine before the attempted upgrade. Now my Ipod Touch is useless. I can't even restore it completely to factory settings. The Apple store manager and employee were even baffled. It is showing still on 5.1.1 version. I am so frustrated that a simple upgrade sent out by Apple has caused me to now have a useless iPod Touch,
