4th gen 40Gb major problems

Hi
About a year ago now I bought a 4th Gen 40Gb iPod. It's been absolutely fine until this last week when it decided to freeze in the middle of the odd album, and then skip onto the next track whenever it felt like it. Now that I have just had broadband connected in my house, I downloaded the updates and the new version of iTunes.
The problem is this: my PC sees the iPod, but will not open it as a drive under My Computer, and it makes the system freeze while thinking about it. It also will not see it in iTunes. Occasionally, I get the folder with the exclamation mark on the iPod itself. I have reset it and reformatted it, but I'm still having the same problems.
What do you suggest? Please help me!!!!

I daren't upgrade to iTunes 6, and I don't see why I need to!
I explained that I'd tried everything, including setting it into disk mode to restore it to every version of iTunes etc available, and that the hard drive seemed faulty. As it was under warranty (just!) the Genius Bar tech let me have a new one. He said they should last years, but their are naturally delicate by nature. I explained that I use a LiliPod case so there's no way it could have damaged the iPod, and he said it must just be a faulty drive. Although i do have to buy Apple care for £39 this time (around $70?) as my warranty on the replacement is only 3 months, so if I want 12 months, I have to pay, which could be worthwhile considering the last one died after 11 months!!

  • 4th Gen Click Wheel problems

I bought a 4th generation click wheel 40g ipod in May 06. In May 07 Apple told me that my hard drive was bad and to send it back for replacement. I sent it right to them in May and just received it back this month. I added a few songs tested it and it was working fine. Added 1000 songs and it was still working fine. I have used it less than 5 times since I got it back this month and it now won't do anything.
It is fully charged and moves from the apple screen to the sad ipod with the exclamation point and then to the battery symbol. I did the reset and all the steps and it is doing the same things my old one did. IS this common for this model? I'm calling Applecare in the morning but wish there was away around waiting months to get a new one.
    Thanks

Unfortunately, it sounds like the replacement had a bad hard drive as well.
As far as "is this normal for this model?", a study conducted by MacinTouch has shown that 4th gen 40GB models are the most unreliable models there are.

  • Spotify on iPod 4th gen - car connectivity problem

Hi, apologies if this is in the wrong place: (The low down) iPod 4th Gen - iOS (6.1.6)  When connecting via USB to 2013 Vauxhall Astra, the head unit displays song track / artist / how long the song has been playing for etc.  Problem: I am unable to change tracks (go back or forward) using the car controls. (on the steering wheel or the dash board)  I have got the latest version of Spotify and iOS available for the 4th gen iPod. As it is an iPod with WiFi connectivity only, I am playing songs that have been downloaded on the device.  the Apple iTunes player works perfectly with the car controls and this is the only reason why I have bought Spotify premium as I wanted to downloaded songs to listen offline and as I spend a majority of time the car, this is very important to me.  Has anyone experienced similar issues / know of any past solutions?

I havent come across the vehicle specific idea yet, but it's curious, what makes it different from vehicle to vehicle? As for the iPod idea, I went out and got a brand new iPod Touch 5, and its the same thing. For some reason, the controls will only change tracks in iTunes, and not Spotify. Im thinking that its only because the ipod/spotify app doesnt know how to read the instructions for the car itself. The most infuriating thing is, this used to work, then they upgraded the app in 2013, and something went haywire. I'm considering trying out the app, Music Control Plus, but I'm seeing that it might only be available on a jailbroken iPod, so that might take a bit to try out. Ill let you know how it goes!

  • IPod Touch 4th Gen - iOS 5 problems?

I'm sure I'm the ONLY person in the WORLD having issues, but ever since I updated my 4th gen iPod touch to iOS 5 I have regular sync problems, it is slow to respond when coming out of the screen locked position and it for some reason when it did decide to sync it sync'ed stuff in my iTunes that was not checked.  I know that I'm an iIdiot, but is there ANYONE else on Earth experiencing similar difficulties?  Is it possible to roll back the OS to the previous release?
I appreciate any and all comments.
    Regards,

Not like you quite but I can empathize.
When I loaded iOS 5 onto my ipod Touch (5th gen I think) i suddenly lost space to "others" about 5Gb which is significant on a 32Gb ipod.
I had to do a complete reset through itunes and now I have loaded back about 150 songs of 5000 in about 2 hours.... I am flying to Australia tomorrow morning I onder what I will have to listen to !!!

  • Service on 4th Gen 40GB iPod

I have a 4th generation 40GB iPod that is still covered by AppleCare and going to require service. I've restored my iPod, removed and reinstalled iTunes and nothing has fixed it. Initially, it was freezing mid-song and skipping 2 or 3 songs ahead before another would actually play. Now, it won't even power on. You can hear the hard drive start up. Then, it dies. No graphics other than the Apple logo will register.
Most talk I've seen seems to be of replacing the unit. Well, mine is not only a few generations behind but they don't even make 40GB iPods anymore. My question is, if it goes in for service, what will they do to fix it?
    Thanks!

Nevermind. I got my answer. They replaced it with another 4th Generation 40GB iPod. I was hoping that, when he told me he was going to replace it, it was going to be with a new video iPod. Oh well. A new identical iPod with a new battery (mine was on the verge of dying) for free is a pretty good deal, too.

  • IPad 4th gen. Speaker problem

    Hello,
I recently bought a 4th generation iPad 32 GB black.
I am using it now for like a month.
    1)
Yesterday I started to notice the sound coming from the speaker contained crackles.
I was playing with the app "iDJ2GO" and I turned off the mid frequencies.
Then I heard loud crackles coming from the speaker. It was like it was popping.
My volume was up to 50% so i wouldn't say I blew it up.
If so, I think its a poor quality speaker because I played music at half of the limit (max).
Maybe it's in my head but I think the music that comes from the speaker isn't as good as it used to be.
So my speaker is crackling a little bit when I play music.
Especiallly when I play electro music.
    2)
When I play house music with base and mute the sound I could hear some static noise that disappears after several seconds.
This static noise also appears when I play music and then hit the pause button.
The static noise differs in loudness depending on what music I play.
CAN YOU TELL ME IF THIS IS NORMAL? AND DO YOU KNOW IF THIS PROBLEM IS UNDER WARRANTY?
I JUST WANT A GOOD QUALITY OF SOUND COMING OUT OF THE SPEAKER.
I PAYED A LOT OF MONEY FOR THE IPAD SO I THINK IT SHOULD FUNCTION PROPERLY.
I already did the 10 second reset but I think it's still there. ('it' is referring to both issues; 1 and 2)
I hope to hear from you!
    Yours sincerely,
    Jorn Smetsers.

A hard reset has been known to remedy this problem.
You might want to detail when the static happens. All the time? Only when you insert the mini jack? With specific software or volume?

  • Error 1418, 4th Gen 40GB Click Wheel

I plugged in my iPod to the dock, and I get the Folder icon with the website underneath. So I open iTunes and it take forever to recognize it, and when it did, it told me it was corrupted. I go to restore it, and I get error 1418. I tried doing it in iTunes, iPod Updater, and erasing in Disk Utility, all try each with both FireWire ports, and trying the USB cable on every USB port on my computer. Nothing worked. Any suggestions?

    Very strange!
Today I hooked my iPod to a windows laptop. Restoring and synchronization was no problem!
Then I tried again on my iMac and no problem either. My iPod has now the windows structure so for future updates I will have to get the laptop again, but synchronization is possible again.
I still believe my battery is almost dead after 3 years because I get the message the battery is empty some times when it should be full actually.

  • (4th Gen.) iPod Problems please help

Hi my iPod has starting problems. The start up never seems to get past the initial apple sign. I can hear the disk spinning then stopping then spinning stopping etc.... The sad iPod, and low battery warning also alternate.
I have tryied reseting and I tried to change to check disk mode but it won't allow me to change the mode. Needless to say iTunes doesn't recognise it when it's plugged in.
    Any ideas please,
    Thanks

If you successfully restored (went through all steps without error) to factory settings/new iPod via iTunes (Not via Settings>General>Reset>Erase all Content and Setting) and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem.

  • Ipad 4th gen. Bluetooth problems

    Hi,
I have an 4th generation ipad and when i try to pair it with bluetooth headsets (mm100), it doesn't work.
I have other Apple devices and I didn't have this issue please help me!

I found this (google can be your friend).  Are you doing this?
To pair the MM 100 to another A2DP or audio capable Bluetooth enabled device, locate the right earcup. With the headset off, press and hold the center "S" logo button. You will feel a click when it has initially been pressed correctly. After about 4 seconds, the headset LED will blink BLUE and RED, indicating it has entered pairing mode.
Also note that if you have this headset paired with another device and that device is nearby and Bluetooth is on, it won't pair with your iPad.

  • IPod 4th Gen Location Serivces problems

Alright, I cannot get the location services to work with Paypal Here or Foursquare. I've reset the network settings and the location warnings and still nothing. I don't know how to register my router with Skyhook.

    - Apple locations services does not use Skyhook. Apple maintains their own database of wifi routers and their location and updates it based on data obtained via iPhones (and maybe iPads with cellular connection). No one has found a way to tell Apple to add/correct a router location.
    - Does the iPod find its correct location in the Mapp app?

  • 40GB 4th Gen iPod Diagnostic Menu at Start-Up

    I've been wondering...
Sometimes (perhaps 25% of the time) when I plug in my 4th gen 40GB iPod (into iTunes or just to the external power supply), I get a strange menu that freezes the iPod and says something like "Reset Press Play Continue." I can't do anything at that point except reset the iPod. When it comes up again, it's usually fine. I took it to the local Genius Bar a couple of weeks ago. The guy said, "Wow. I've never seen one do that." (Great.) He told me to re-install the operating software. That might help. So I wiped my iPod's hard drive and re-installed everything. (It's a good thing I use Senuta so I didn't lose all my music!) It didn't help. I still get the "Press Play Continue" notice at start up from time to time. So far, this has only frozen my iPod until I can remember which buttons to push to reset it. But is this something that'll get worse? And what is it doing, anyway? Can it be "fixed"? Thanks for your help!
    Bill

Yes it does, one that is functioning properly.
Before investing in one to just use this as a portable external drive, I'd look around on the internet for a low priced portable drive instead.

  • Attention to the apple developer, u need to check the issue about the iMovie which installed in an iPad 4th gen. Is having a problem during closing the app from the theater page to the home screen. It doesn't closes exactly severally...

Attention to the Apple developer, the iMovie which installed to the iPad 4th gen. has a problem when it's opened at the theater page it frequently couldn't be closed down to the home screen. The app page is actually blinking and cannot tap onto anything..

Thanks for the swift reply, I have been looking online and a loose plug seems to be somewhat of an issue with many, I hope mine is actually a problem and not what others are experiencing. It's taken me this long to even reach out for the simple fact I HATE being a complainer but this is just horrible.
Do you have an iPad 3 as well? And is yours not experiencing any issues close to mine?
    Thanks again!

  • 4th Gen iPod will not mount or connect to Windows

Hi, one of my iPods will not connect to Windows XP. Its a 4th Gen 40gb non photo iPod
The iPod still plays and works "normally" as a portable device (ie I can play music), but I cannot connect it to my pc at all.
When I plug it in via either USB or Firewire ports the iPod disc whirrs and gets stuck in a loop (that can last over 2 hours plus) before i need to reset it in order to disconnect it from the pc.
When I connect, it doesn't launch iTunes as it should.
It doesn't appear in My Computer.
It doesnt appear in Computer Management>Disk Management
Latest iPod updater cannot read it (even when put in disk mode) and tells me that it can't mount the iPod.
Also, the iPod has since started to mess my PC up - it will not allow the PC to boot up with the iPod connected. If I connect the iPod to the PC with iTunes already launched it causes iTunes to freeze and crash. When I go to restart the PC, Windows will not shutdown.
Getting sick now - any ideas please (besides throwing it out the window!)?
It's weird how the iPod still plays, but it will not connect to the PC when my other 4G 30gb photo and Shuffle will.

I have tried resetting and restoring the ipod before, and I have put it into disk mode too (in order to restore it) but the ipod updater said it could not mount it
However, I did try Deanz advice by putting it into disk mode whilst attached to the mains and then connecting it to the PC has at least enabled me to see it in "My Computer" for the first time as (the "F" drive), even if iTunes is not recognising it.
However, when I attempt to see the ipod in Disk Management I get the same problem outlined above in an earlier post (grey screen).
If I try to browse the iPod via My computer that task freezes. Task Manager claims the function is "not responding"
    Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Anyway, all my music is backed up so that's not a problem. The iPod works, but I can't update it so it could be worse. Not really sure how to remap the iPod to a different drive letter
[edit] During the process of closing down the non-responsive "My Computer", Windows had a major gimp out and completely froze me out until I reset the ipod an put it back into disc mode (again). Then Windows reappeared in the same state before it crashed. I suspect this is due to some kind of conflict with the iPod as it has done this a few times now since my iPod started acting up (and only when the iPod is connected).
Thinking of some elaborate home insurance claim now..............

  • Trying to decide on ios 7 upgrade on 4th gen ipad

After reading about the numerous problems ios7 was causing, I decided to hold off on the upgrade. However, a lot of the people that seemed to be having issues were using older versions of the iphone or ipad. I have an ipad 4th generation. Has anyone with a third or 4th gen had any problems with ios7?
If I forego this upgrade, will I be able to download future versions of ios?

People don't generally come to tech support forums to talk about how well their iPads are working. That means you're far more likely to read about people having problems here then about people who aren't. The vast majority of people using iOS 7 are having no problems with it.
I have been using iOS 7 on my iPad 3 since iOS 7 was released. Not a single problem. That being said, you should spend some time checking out an iPad running the new software as it is quite different looking. Some people don't care for it. Once you upgrade, there is no going back.
    Best of luck.
