4th Gen Drama: won't mount or show up in iTunes, flashing icons

So my 4th gen ipod was working beautifully until Thursday of this week. I hadn't used it since the weekend, and when I plugged it into my PowerBook, i got the sad ipod pointing me to apple.com/service/ipod. The ipod won't show up in the Finder, itunes, ipod updater or Disk Util.
After attempting the 5Rs about a dozen or so times, unsuccessful attempts at disk mode, and leaving it plugged itno the wall to recharge overnight, I am now presented with an ipod screen that flashes between the Apple logo (maybe 15-20 seconds), the aforementioned sad ipod (maybe 15-20 seconds), very brief flashes of the gradiated dead battery and full battery logos (maybe .5 seconds each), and then the whole cycle repeats. When I plug it inot the wall again, I get the flat dead battery logo.
I did install 2006-06-28 recently after its release, but no problems until now.
Any guesses as to what's going on here? In case it matters, I would have no problems scrubbing the thing and starting over, if i could just get it to mount soumewhere. My 1-year warranty runs out in the middle of August, FWIW.
I'll be glad to provide any more info if you think that would be helpful.
Thanks in advance to all the mods and readers who check our these boards. You've saved me many headaches in the past, and I hope you can help me wit this one.

my iPod shuffle 4th gen won't charge or show up in iTunes when i plug it in to the back of the computer and when the off/on switch is halfway it gives me a solid red light on the iPod battery status light for about five seconds does anyone know what to do

If you connect it to the Mac with iTunes NOT running, and run Disk Utility, does it appear in the sidebar as a "disk"?  Also, you can run System Profiler or System Information (depending Mac OS X version).  It is in Applications/Utilities/, but you can also run it from the About This Mac window.  Does the shuffle appear as a device under USB?
The red light when you move the power switch to ON means very low charge in battery.  That probably means the battery is not getting charged when connected.  In terms of hardware, that could mean a bad USB port on Mac, a bad USB cable, or a bad connection on the shuffle.  In any case, power is not getting to the battery.  It might be a bad battery, but if that was the only problem, I think the shuffle would still appear in iTunes when connected.  That's why asked if it appeared in Disk Utility or System Profiler/Information; if it does, the connection is working (even though iTunes does not see it for some reason).
You can make sure the USB port is working by using something else that is similar (like a USB flash drive) on the same port.  If you happen to have another USB cable, you also try to rule out a bad cable.

Yes, I've been using it for months. And I can charge other devices with it. (my iPhone) but something weird just happened..... I kept on pluging it in the iPod and sometimes it would start to chàrge then sometimes it won't charge. Charges every time with the iPhone though.

    Try:

    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Your iPod can only be synced with one computer at a time.  If you try to sync it with a new computer/iTunes library, it will replace the contents of the iPod with whatever is in the new library. You should probably disable the autosync functionality first by going to Edit -> Preferences, clicking the Devices tab, and enabling the prevent iPods,iPhones, and iPads from automatically syncing option.
Before doing anything else,  authorize the new computer with your iTunes Account.  In iTunes, choose Store -> Authorize This Computer and enter in the correct credentials. Either copy a backup file from your old computer to your new one or create a new backup of your iPod in iTunes before letting it sync.
Then right->click on your iPod Touch from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes and choose Backup. You might also want to take a look at this article to see what it all included in the backup.

Now onto synced content such as music, videos, photos, etc.  For iTunes purchases you can copy them back into iTunes by choosing File -> Transfer Purchases.  For all other nonpurchased iTunes content, see this excellent user tip from another forum member turingtest2 outlining the different methods and software available to help you copy content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.
Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device
Once the backup has been made and all other synced content such as music, videos, and photos are back in your iTunes library, restore your iPod from that backup you made earlier.  Here is more on backing up and restoring your iPod.

  • 4th Gen Touch won't load anything WiFi related, help would be appreciated.

    I have a 4th Gen Touch, 64gb.
Got it about three days ago, and have since been connecting to my phone's WiFi.
(I have a HTC Desire HD)
It had been working absolutely fine, no issues, was loading app store, itunes, and safari pages all fine.
Yesterday, it just wouldn't load, as if I had no connection.
Now, it shows that the ipod is connected to my wireless.. it just won't load.
    Please help.lol.

If you've already tried the hard reset (holding down the sleep/wake and home buttons until it restarted), power cycling, and resetting network settings, you may want to try restoring your iPod through iTunes back to its original factory settings.  You'll want to back everything up to your computer first.
Here is an article that can walk you through the steps: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137
It is important that you do set the iPod up as a new device at the end of the process to prevent copying over any potential problem directly from your back up image.  Test it out.  If it still won't work talk to the folks at Apple to see if there is anything wrong with the iPod.

  • 4th gen iPod won't load songs; my 5th gen and Nano will...

I have a 4th gen iPod that was working with no problems until my girlfriend unintentionally erased all the songs when she installed iTunes on a new computer and connected the iPod. In the meantime, I acquired a 5th gen iPod and Nano and have been using them without event on my computer.
When I tried re-connecting the 4th gen iPod to my computer, the songs wouldn't load. I've updated iTunes and the iPod software to the latest versions and still can't get it to work. I've tried restoring the iPod numerous times and when I try to sync it (either manually or automatically) it says "the required file cannot be found". It has sometimes said "an unknown error has occured (-69)" which would mean something is wrong with the files themselves, but then why would my other iPods work fine using the same files?
What's weird is that the iPod won't load any of the songs but will load the names of playlists.
Does anyone have any ideas what's going on here?
    Thanks
      Windows XP

    Hi, thanks for the response.
Yes, I did try the 5 R's a few times without much success, it seems.
And I did research the (-69) error message which on the site says,
"This error occurs when iTunes tries to send files to your iPod, but a file (or files) is unusable (something is wrong with it."
But like I said, I'm confused as to why one iPod would be happy with the files but my other one wouldn't. I've tried choosing random songs to put on the iPod (thinking maybe my first song in my library is corrupted) but no songs seem to load. The other error message I get is "The required file cannot be found". But why can my other iPods find them?

  • External HD Won't Mount, Only Shows up in Disk Utility

My external Time Machine drive won't mount any more.  It seems like it's very sensitive to being disconnected
without putting it in the trash, and my USB interface seems to spontaneously disconnect -- possibly loose.
The drive shows up in HD Utility with the mounted name greyed out, but it can still be selected to try a repair.
It always says it cannot repair the disk and to back it up.  Well, it IS a backup.  Disk Utility does seem to give up
on repairs quite frequently anyway.  I've tried df -hl and then fsck_hd, but df -hl doesn't give me a /dev name that
    fsck_hd can use.
I've gotten into terminal and been able to look at some backups, so apparently something is mounted, just not completely
to the point of seeing it on my desktop.
Is there a way to moving these backups to another drive?  Perhaps via an OSX-specific darwin *nix command for copying
    an entire directory in Terminal?
Is there an app that's particularly good at disk recovery other than Disk Warrior (which tends to take days to work)?

Have you tried another USB cable?
Also, you may need to take the drive out of that enclosure and use a different one.

  • My 4th gen iPod won't turn on, just plays the shutting down screen forever

I have a 4th gen ipod, 8gb, and it hasn't really given me problems until the past few days, it's been crashing constantly and freezing. Now it has shut down and when I turn it on it is just stuck on the shutting down screen. I've tried holding down home and power, it shuts off, then just turns right back on and does the same thing. I drained the battery, and it showed the normal screen for being dead, then when I plug it in, it starts up with the shut down screen again. Something similar happened to one of my friends so she just wrote it off as being "completely dead" and gave up. (But I don't want to just give it up because basically my only pictures of my cat that passed away are on it, and I don't have iCloud) Also, I thought maybe it was because my version was 5.1.1, I never updated because I didn't want the youtube app to be gone. Is there anything left I can try or is it completely done for?

I had the exact same problem with my ipod and the way i got out of it was i connected it to my pc - mac works too.- then when it turn on i held only the power button for about 10-60 seconds until it finally shutoff then i basically put it in dfu mode ( if you don't already know what it is and how to do it i will explain that after) and my pc recconized it in dfu mode and after waiting about 5 min unplug from your pc or mac and if it doesnt already show the power screen on then turn it on and it should work if it just goes to recovery mode then repeat the steps for putting it in dfu mode just without pluging it in.
Here's how to put it in DFU mode. First just hold the power and home screen botton for 10 seconds or until you see it flash. Next you let go of the HOME BOTTON ONLY while still holding the power botton down for a good 20-25 seconds then you can let go and your done!   *Note: if you have it plug in to a pc or mac you will also see something saying your pc/mac is recognizing your ipod in DFU mode.
Hope it helps with your problem! (^∇^)

  • New 4th gen ipod won't connect to internet

My sister just bought a new 4th gen ipod touch today. Everything works fine with it except for the internet. Now I own a 2nd gen ipod touch and my internet connection works just fine. Why doesn't hers work? I've tried turning the wifi on and off, and turning the airplane mode on and off as well. Our wifi only works through our computer modem. Is the ipod just not picking up the modem's signal or is something wrong with her ipod?

    - Does the SSID of your router show up in the list of networks available on the 4G iPod?
    - Have you tried resetting th 4G iPod:
Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
    - If SSID still  does not show up on the 4G but does show on and the 2G iPod then I would first restore the iPod from backup.  If still problems then restore the iPd to factory defaults.new iPOd
    - If still not SSID then you likely have a defective iPOd and should make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store or you could call AppleCare.

  • 4th Gen iPod will not mount or connect to Windows

Hi, one of my iPods will not connect to Windows XP. Its a 4th Gen 40gb non photo iPod
The iPod still plays and works "normally" as a portable device (ie I can play music), but I cannot connect it to my pc at all.
When I plug it in via either USB or Firewire ports the iPod disc whirrs and gets stuck in a loop (that can last over 2 hours plus) before i need to reset it in order to disconnect it from the pc.
When I connect, it doesn't launch iTunes as it should.
It doesn't appear in My Computer.
It doesnt appear in Computer Management>Disk Management
Latest iPod updater cannot read it (even when put in disk mode) and tells me that it can't mount the iPod.
Also, the iPod has since started to mess my PC up - it will not allow the PC to boot up with the iPod connected. If I connect the iPod to the PC with iTunes already launched it causes iTunes to freeze and crash. When I go to restart the PC, Windows will not shutdown.
Getting sick now - any ideas please (besides throwing it out the window!)?
It's weird how the iPod still plays, but it will not connect to the PC when my other 4G 30gb photo and Shuffle will.

I have tried resetting and restoring the ipod before, and I have put it into disk mode too (in order to restore it) but the ipod updater said it could not mount it
However, I did try Deanz advice by putting it into disk mode whilst attached to the mains and then connecting it to the PC has at least enabled me to see it in "My Computer" for the first time as (the "F" drive), even if iTunes is not recognising it.
However, when I attempt to see the ipod in Disk Management I get the same problem outlined above in an earlier post (grey screen).
If I try to browse the iPod via My computer that task freezes. Task Manager claims the function is "not responding"
    Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Anyway, all my music is backed up so that's not a problem. The iPod works, but I can't update it so it could be worse. Not really sure how to remap the iPod to a different drive letter
[edit] During the process of closing down the non-responsive "My Computer", Windows had a major gimp out and completely froze me out until I reset the ipod an put it back into disc mode (again). Then Windows reappeared in the same state before it crashed. I suspect this is due to some kind of conflict with the iPod as it has done this a few times now since my iPod started acting up (and only when the iPod is connected).
Thinking of some elaborate home insurance claim now..............

  • My WD hard drive won't "mount" it shows in disk utility but can't be repaired. I'm thinking this is a software issue since the disk is being recognized.

    I
I have a WD drive that won't "mount". Tried repairing, turning off and back on, unplugging and nothing has worked. Can anyone help?

The WD Passport has no independent power supply, relying instead on getting power from a USB port on the computer. AS the drive ages it can need more power to spin the platter and many USB ports on notebook cannot provid that much.
Anther issue is the WD drive itself. WD uses an odd proproprietary formatting scheme that makes the drive not always behave like typical Mac drives.
If the drive contains nothing you need to access, use Disk Utility to reformat it to "Macintosh Extended (Journalled)"
If the drive contains important data, there are a couple of inexpensive ways to get more power to it:
    1) Get a "Y" conenctor cable like this:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/USB2AYMBPB/
It draws power from two USB ports and ofter that is enough to make the drive work.
    2) Get a powered USB Hub:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/USB2HB7PRO/
It has its own power brick and that is usually enough to get an older USB external drive recognized.

  • External hard drive suddenly won't mount, but shows in Disk Utility.

Running OS 10.6.8... Disk Utility sees it and there's no issues when verified or repaired.  The partition is grayed out and won't mount through Disk Utility.  I've also tried mounting via Terminal, but same result.  I've connected other drives, so I know it's not the wires or ports.  When I turn the power on, it spins up and seems to be working properly.  I don't have another mac to test it on.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

  • Ipod nano 4th gen Equalizer won't enable

I just nought the 4th gen of Ipod nano and am having problems getting the equalizer to enabel (go from 'off' to 'on) so I can add bass, use loudness or other options.
Has anyone seen this and waht;s the fix. the online user guides arent much help.

There really is no "on" position.
It is either "Off" or it is set to one of the EQ presets (IE: Small Speakers, Rock, Pop, etc.).
If you go to the EQ menu and when you select EQ the blue bar has "Off" selected, you know the EQ is actually off.
If you go to the EQ menu and any of the presets are selected by the blue bar, then you know the EQ is on.
To make sure, go to the EQ menu, select the one you want, then hit the menu button. Then click the EQ selection again and whatever you selected before should still be selected.
Let us know how this works out for you.
