4th gen freezing

I have a question, and sorry if this has been addressed before. My sister has a 20GB 4th gen iPod and when she is driving and listening to a song, the iPod will randomly lock up and won't work until the battery is completely dead then recharged.
Is there something simple that might be wrong or could it be a faulty hard drive? I was thinking that it might just be the way she has it placed in the car (in a way that might encourage constant bumping around).
Thanks for the help!

Well, keeping the iPod from being bounced around in the car alot would definitely be a step in the right direction. At least try to put a skin case on it, to absorb some of the shock. As for the freezing problems, you might want to try restoring the iPod. When the iPod freezes, are you able to reset it? (Holding down MENU and SELECT at the same time for about 10 seconds).

  • Sync of iPod Touch 4th Gen freezes during Step 6 0f 6

Sync of iPod Touch 4th Gen on PC with Windows 7 freezes (after installing iTunes 10.5.0.142 and iOS 5) in Step 6 of 6 @ message that says "some of the items in the iTunes library were not copied because they could not be found".  This message has always come up before but I could always click on OK and sync would then complete itself without any further problems.  Have now tried re-syncing several times and same freeze-up keeps happening.  My other concern is that I have just purchased new iPhone 4S and now don't know whether to try and sync it or will it just end up with the same problem.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The difference between the 8GB advertised capacity and the available 6.5 GB is due to the iOS taking ups some of that difference and the way GB is calculated and advertised. See consumer confusion in:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabyte
The latest iOS (4,2,1) is larger than previous ones so the difference is larger.
BTW, your exact question gets asked a couple of time a week and you could have found it by looking at or searching the iPod Touch forum;.

  • Ipod Touch (4th gen) freezes iTunes when sync'd.

A friend of mine has been having some problems and I have been unable to help him.  He bought a new iPod touch 4th gen at the weekend (couldn't resist the lower price or wait a few weeks until the new model) running ios 6, he has just updated itunes to 10.7 but everytime he syncs it iTunes freezes during part 5 or 6 of the sync process and does not recover.  His old nano (5th gen) syncs without issue, any ideas?  We have tried reseting the iPod to factory setings but this will only allow the iPod to sync correctly once.  When we try again iTunes freezes up.  We are pretty much at a loss, it's taken the shine of his new purchase.
    Thanks.

From what I can recall they are preparing to or waiting for changes to be applied, I don't have my laptop to hand so I can't check at the mo.  The status bar then does nothing at all, iTunes just freezes up completely.  The moving arrows by the iPod stop circling and we have to use the task manager to close the program, just in case it restarted syncing we left it for about 20 mins without joy.  Even unplugging the ipod makes no difference.

  • HT201406 Ipod touch 4th gen - freezing

My Ipod touch seems to be stuck/freezes. Operating two apps at a time is close to impossible, if I want to type in fb chat window, it freezes for first 10 seconds and then enables type. It takes longer than usual to launch an app. If the music is on, and I want to browse through photos, music stops playing.
Could anyone pinpoint what is the issue?

Periodically double click the home button and close all the apps in the recently used dock. Then power off and then back on the iPod. This frees up memory. The 4G only has 256 MB of memory.

  • ITouch 4th gen problem

iTouch 4th gen freezes at boot up and will not reset no matter how long I hold down the power and home buttons. Mac will not recognize it when plugged in.

See if placing the iPod in recovery mode will allow Itunes to see the iPod so you can restore the iPod,  After that, I thing an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • 4th Gen iPod only works with usb - freezes with firewire

After a recent iTunes upgrade my my 40 gig Gen 4 iPod started locking up and freezing my G4 and G5 when using firewire to transfer files until I unplugged the iPod.
I found several threads from people with similar problems and tried all the suggestions (with the exception of "dropping" the iPod.)
After a week of troubleshooting, I'm finally successfully transferring files using USB 1 - it also freezes with USB 2.
This is the troubleshooting process I went through to arrive at the above conclusion:
    First did the 5Rs.
    Deleted and reinstalled iTunes
Followed Mitch's suggestion for using Disk Tools to reformat the iPod (successfully)
Ran some of the internal iPode diagnostic test and they indicate no problem with the drive or USB or firewire.
Ruled out iTunes as the problem because I was having the same problem when I closed iTunes and just copied files directly from the desktop to the iPod. When doing the transfers in the Finder, the Finder would freeze/lock up and I'd have to reboot.
Rules out the computer because the same thing happened with both G4 & G5.
Ruled out something in the user profile because the same thing happened when using my wife's account.
Ruled out the firewire cables because the same thing happened with two different firewire cables.
I've seen several posts from people with similar problems but no solutions. Has anyone cracked this nut? It takes FOREVER to update 40 gig with USB

  • TS1363 iTunes freezes when I connect this iPod (4th gen nano)

I have an older (4th gen) ipod that a family member gave me.  I'd like to restore it and load it with music, but when I connect it and open iTunes, not only does iTunes not recognize it, but it completely freezes iTunes.  I'm using Windows 8, latest version of iTunes installed.  I've tried resetting the iPod, but that does not help.
When I check the device in control panel, it states "This device is working properly".
    Any help is appreciated!

Found my solution in a similar thread - I hope I can find it and thank the poster!
It's a nuclear option, but it works!
Connect the offending iPod to a computer that does NOT have iTunes
You will be able to open the iPod as a Disk Drive in My Computer
(the following steps worked on my laptop running XP; you will need to adapt to your operating system)
Right-click on the Disk Drive when it appears
    Click on Format
A window will pop up with some details and check boxes
    Check "Quick Format"
You'll get a warning that everything on the drive will be erased.  Click OK. (you are trying to reset the iPod to its original factory settings so that ITunes will read it as a new iPod)
Formatting only took a minute or so on my computer
Eject the iPod (Click the icon in your taskbar at the bottom of the screen)
Now, take the iPod back to the computer with your iTunes on it and connect it.  (Close iTunes and reopen it if you haven't already) You should see a Welcome to your new iPod screen and be able to start over again syncing music, etc.
    It worked for me!

    Try:

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.

  • IPod Touch 4th Gen iTunes Sync Freezing Issue

My iPod Touch 4th Generation freezes during the "Backing up" stage of sync. Nothing I have tried so far has resolved this issue and it's getting very annoying seeing as how I can't sync my iPod at all. I know it isn't just the iPod's fault, because it happened to my older one too. I've done everything I have found people suggesting and none of it has worked. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
I am running Windows 7 64-Bit platform on iTunes 10.6.0.40

  • My 4th Gen iPod touch freezes often and doesn't allow me to play any media.

I had a replacement for my 4th Gen and after a few months it would play a video but the sound would cut off and for some time it wouldn't play any media and was very unresponsive but came back to normal soon after. However just a few days ago it has been stuck like this since and will not play any thing. I have restored it, restarted it, erased all media and settings and put it all back on, but it still unresponsive and doesn't play media.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • My iPod touch (4th gen) suddenly went blank, and I can't get it back on!

I was listening to music and downloading songs from the iTunes Store on my iPod touch (4th gen) when suddenly the screen went blank. The music I was listening to was still playing in my headphones. When I unplugged the headphones, the music oddly continued playing from the built-in speakers, instead of pausing like it normally does when you remove the headphones without pausing. I think the music finally stopped shortly after I plugged the headphones back in.
Since this happened, the iPod has not responded at all when I press or hold buttons. The screen has remained blank and turned off. Surprisingly, iTunes still recognizes the iPod when I connect it to my computer (Windows Vista laptop, if it matters) and tries to sync. Since iTunes is very poorly written, it almost always freezes at some point before I can successfully finish syncing, but this was happening before my iPod blank-screened, so it isn't related to the problem.
What's wrong with my iPod, and how do I fix it? Will I need to have it repaired? Thanks!

  • Is there a way to fix the white or black screen on Ipad 4th Gen?

Ive tried to reset it and restore to factory settings but this does not work. The screen was white until I restored to factory settings and now it's black when it starts up. Ive also let it die and tried to charge and power it on again but no go. It's an Ipad Black 32GB 4th Gen. I will post a link to one of the pictures I had of it below. I am wondering if I have to pay how much it'll be to fix. It was working great until about a week ago when it randomly happened. It was purchased in February of 2013.

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

  • 4th gen iPod turned off and won't turn back on.

So, earlier today I had my iPod touch (4th gen) plugged into my electronic drum kit through a double sided auxillary cable. Nothing out of the usual. I turned it to a certain song I felt like jamming to at the time and it froze. It was a weird type of freeze. The screen itself was frozen, as was the sound, but it had displayed weird grey/purple static waves, like an old T.V. with the antennas slightly off. I tried turning the iPod off normally, when that didnt work I held the power and home button to reset it thinking it was some glitch that would go away. Only, it didn't reset and just stayed off. I've tried plugging it into my PC, no response. I've even tried plugging it into my xbox (which is one way I usually charge it) and it didn't respond either. As of now, it's a brick. I have no idea why. Nothing was out of the ordinary other then a random screen freeze/glitch.
TL;DR I have an iPod that's turned off, it will not reset, go into DFU mode, and does not charge/is not recognized when plugged into anything. Anyone got any idea what I should do?

It would appear that you have a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius bar of an Apple store is in order.
