4th Gen iPod not mounting

My 4th Gen has stopped mounting on the desktop via Firewire.
Have tried different ports and cables on G5 but no joy The Firewire port will however supply
power to the iPod.
However if I connect it using USB it mounts with no problems and shows up in iTunes.
Used to work just fine with Firewire.....
Any Thoughts appreciated....
TIA.

One suggestion -
connecting the iPod via USB, and using Disk Utility to format as HFS+. Then, reconnect using firewire and use iTunes to restore.
For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”

  • 40GB 4th gen iPod not seen by PC or iTunes

I can't get my 40GB 4th gen iPod to connect to iTunes or even be properly seen by the PC (i'm running Vista). The firmware is the latest version.
Not sure what else I can do to get it to connect to iTunes. My sister, running XP, couldnt get it to work either.
Have tried re-setting it, but that had made no difference.
    Any ideas? Thanks, Jen

hi i have a 3rd gen ipod whichh i have similar problems when i upload it onto my pc running vista! i have no problems when i attach ipod to my laptop and work pcs which run on xp2. im thinking its a problem with vista as it says my ipod needs restoring or is corrupt and the ipod appears in my computer then disappears!i have also had problems when trying to upload music to my ipod on vista and itunes and my ipod hang! xp2 pcs say there is nothing wrong with my ipod!
I aint had problems with my wife's ipod nano so could it be a ploy by apple to get owners of older ipods to buy new ones???

  • 4th gen iPod not recognized by iTunes

After installing the new iTunes 7 on my laptop, my 4th gen iPod is no longer coming up on the iTunes screen when I connect it. I tried everything suggested in the FAQ - reset it, reinstalled iTunes, disabled antivirus, etc. The only thing I didn't do was restore it because I can't when it isn't recognized. When I reinstalled off my original CD, the iPod was being recognized so it's definitely not the iPod or the USB port. Once I updated to iTunes 7, it stops working. Can anybody help?

Hey, yeah, I am having the same problem, but when I try to download an older version of iTunes, it won't let me because I still have iTunes 7.0, even though I have put it in the trash and emptied the trash, how did you get rid of it?

  • 4th Gen ipod not keeping Play Count

4th gen ipod, software version 3.1.1, itunes 8
My ipod is no longer keeping track of play count or last played. It seemed to stop when I update the software on the ipod. I manually manage my music, and I do not care if it syncs back to the songs on my hard drive. But when I plug my ipod in and look at the songs on there, it does not show that I have listened to anything.

I would use the Restore button in iTunes to erase the iPod's hard drive and initialize the iPod's software. Then sync all of your songs in your iTunes library back to the iPod.

  • 4th Gen iPod not working with older ipod speaker docks

Has anyone else had issues when docking a 4th gen ipod to portible speakers or an adapter that works fine with 3rd gen ipods? I've had 2 different things happen... with an alarm clock w/ ipod jack, the ipod will play, but it won't charge. With a travel speaker set for ipod that I use, the ipod won't play or charge. The same thing happens in my car which has a jack for an ipod.. my 3rd gen will play and charge, but my 4th gen will only play.
Any help out there to resolve this?

This might help with the charging problem:

  • My Ipod 4th Gen will not mount into Itunes

Please anyone with technical knowledge HELP ME.
The basic problem is that my 4th Generation Ipod will not mount into Itunes.
Let me tell you what I have done so far this includes all the R's, I have also followed the advice of reinstalling itunes and Quicktime I have also tried backwards installing to version 6 (at present I have upgraded to version 7.0.2). The ipod is visible in Windows and I still am able to use it as disk as I have programs I am using off it.
I have tried a fifth gen and also an Ipod mini and both mount onto my Itunes.
I have tried to reinstall the Ipod software, however the previous ipod updates do not work and as the Ipod cannot be mounted I cannot use Itunes to update it as it is not visible.
I have also run the Ipod Diagnostic in Itunes and everything seems fine (I have included the report if anyone can please understand it)and at the very bottom it states that the Ipod is truly Mounted. WELL ITS NOT
I really am getting desperate now as this is the same on both my Desktop and Laptop and I am getting very close to throwing the whole thing out along with all the rest of my computer equipment.
    Thanks a lot

If anyone is interested I managed to solve this problem by reformatting the ipod as a mac ipod, with the help of friends system. This does get rid of the music but as I had it backed up wasn't a problem. I then plugged the mac Ipod back into a windows pc and reformatted it as a windows ipod which updated the firmware correctly and have'nt had a problem since.

  • New 4th gen ipod not recognized by imac

My new 4th gen nano is not recognized by my imac, when i plug it in the message comes up 'Inserted disk contains no files OSX can read. To continue with disk click ignore.' After clicking ignore the nano is not to be found. I have a G4 running OSX 10.3.9, is that my problem? Is there a fix or not, do i have to update to the latest OSX?
    Thank You. Slang3

Yes. Refer to the *Mac system requirements* of Apple - iPod nano - Technical Specifications (or on the back of the box the Nano came in) for the minimum OS & iTunes versions you will need.

  • 4th gen iPod not showing music purchases

I have recently purchased some music on my mac (book, 2008, running 10.6.8... because that is the most it can...) through the itunes store.
As soon as it downloaded, it rang up my ipad (2), ipod (touch, 4th gen, running 6.1.6, also because that is the newest it can handle...) if i wanted to download it onto those devices. I downloaded it to my ipad, adjusted the settings so it would always do so from now on, and instantly had access to it to listen.
I was hoping for the same to happen on my ipod, since i use it exclusively to have access to music in my car, and went through the same authorization process in settings. But when I tried to look up my purchases, it had absolutely nothing in there. I am wondering if the difference between the oler and newer OS would make my music purchases unavailable this way, or if something else might be the issue... I have all purchases throught itunes enabled to download as available, and am really baffled as to why they should be inaccessible since I was given the option specifically to do that through the settings.
I would try to sync manually, but the newer laptop (running the most current OS) that has all my playlists and sync info is currently two states away with my husband, and out of my reach for a while.
As much I try to skirt around not being able to have the newest OSs on my older, but still perfectly well functioning devices, my annoyance grows by the day at isues like these. Hoping that there is a solution to this, rather than another disappointing fiasco repaying my loyalty for these wonderful products...

  • IPod touch 4th gen will not connect to anything after update. Please help.

Ok, so I haven't updated my 4th gen ipod touch since I bought it, which was well over a year ago. Just recently, apps have started to force me to update to the newest iOS and many updates require it too, so I finally decided to update and get it over with. Well, I synced everything from my ipod and then updated. Well, to my horror after I came back I found out that even though I had CLEARLY synced my apps. They were gone on BOTH my ipod and my computer.
Not to say I was really ticked off or anything, but I had almost 15 GB or so of just apps on my 32 GB itouch. I read somewhere that I can go back and reinstall all my apps but that would be a PAIN. Turns out there aren't many others ways to go about doing it so I was left with little choice. Well, once again, I ran into the problem that absolutely nothing would connect on my ipod touch.
So, I have two problems actually:
    1. Is there anyway besides reinstalling apps for me to get back all the apps I had prior to updating my ipod? And in the future, how can I prevent itunes from deleting my apps when I clearly have them synced before updating?
    2. Why won't my ipod touch connect to anything wifi related? When I open the app store it just simply loads. And it will continue loading forever; I had it "loading" for about an hour until I decided to come here. Same goes with iCloud, facetime, Safari - just anything that has to do with connecting to my wifi.
Things I've done: I've restarted my ipod once already, I've reset my router as well, and I've also tried to disconnect from my router then reconnect. None of them have worked so far. Any help would be appreciated.

    - If synced media like apps and music are not in the iTunes library on the computer one which you update they will not be on the iPod after the update since the backup that iTunes makes does not include synced media..

I am having the same problem (lost in back-up purgatory) on both my iPhone 4 and my iPad2.  I am running Windows XP.
I have tried everything I've seen suggested on various support communities, with no success.
I have gotten used to having to find a windows workaround everytime Apple updates iTunes, and this time it is especially frustrating.
I don't have any solutions, and I am responding to all of these types of messages in hopes of finding something that will work for me.
One person was able to work through it by deleting all of the previous iTunes backup files.  I'm trying that now.  4 hours into it, and it does not seem to be working......

  • My 4th gen ipod touch will not work in a philips or Sony docking station

I bought a philips(DC320) clock radio and my ipod touch would not work in it.  Thinking it was a problem with the connector on the radio I returned it and bought a Sony ICF-CS15ip because the store was out of the philips radio.  When I plugged my 4th gen ipod touch into that again my Ipod touch would not play through the radio but the radio would recognize and charge the ipod.  I tried my daughter's 2nd gen ipod touch in the Sony and it worked great.  So It looks like there is a problem with the my ipod.  Sony claims that the ICF-CS15ip is compatible with the 4th gen ipod touch and I have the latest IOS 5.1.1 on my ipod.  Any suggestions before I go to the Apple store?  The Ipod is only 6 months old.

You can try the standard fixes:
    - Reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPOd.
That has worked for some users.
However, sometimes an iOS update will break compatibility. In that case yo have to wait for either Apple or the dock manufacturer to issue a firmware update.

    Likely this:
Errors related to third-party security software
    Error 2, 4 (or -4), 6, 40, 1000, 9006
Follow Troubleshooting security software. Often, uninstalling third-party security software will resolve these errors.
There may be third-party software that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting a TcpWindowSize entry into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause these errors. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet size modification for assistance or follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
Verify that access to ports 80 and 443 are allowed on your network.
Verify that communication to albert.apple.com or photos.apple.com is not blocked by a firewall, or other Internet security setting.
Discard the .ipsw file, open iTunes and attempt to download the update again. See the steps underAdvanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations.
Restore your device while connected to a different network.
    Restore using a different computer.
