4th Gen. iPod - Sad iPod Icon

I got a 40 GB 4th generation click wheel iPod in December of 2004. In September of 2005, I got an exclamation folder icon on my iPod. I jumped through all the hoops on Apple's support page to fix it, to no avail. I paid my $30, sent it in, and they sent me a new one. Now, in November of 2005 (2 months later) this new iPod has died, this time with a sad iPod icon. Once again, I have jumped through all the hoops that Apple wants me to, and my iPod is still dead. I'd really rather not keep paying $30 every few months to replace a dead iPod.
Suggestions?

That's an interesting question. As you probably know, if you go out and buy a 5th gen iPod, you pay $300 (for a 30gb "upgrade")- about 10 replacements at your current rate. As a high school student, I personally don't have the cash, but it might well be worthwhile if you do. Nevertheless, I'd almost recommend that you give the "repair" one more shot. It's obviously up to you. One other thing you should consider, however, is connectivity. The 5th generations no longer use firewire, so if you don't have USB 2.0, you might be in for a long song/data loading time. I use my iPod as an external hard drive (well, not any more!), so that would be bad in my case.
That said, I don't entirely understand why you are paying $30 to send in the iPod for repair; it should still be under warranty from the December 2004 purchase and, if not, Apple's (meaningless?) 3 month guarantee for refurbs. You should look into this, because, sorry to say, you might be spending those dollars for nothing.
I'm contemplating a rather different sort of solution: a downgrade to a 3rd generation. I got my 4th generation after sending in a 3rd for a battery replacement. Apple messed up supposedly in my favor, sending me a 4th gen (and sending my personalized 3rd generation to someone slightly less lucky!). The thing is, if I am really good on the day of question, I might get somebody helpful on the Applecare lines who would set up a dispatch with my old serial number. They offered that before when there was the personalization issue, but I turned it down. Though, after these troubles, my 3rd Generation appears more and more attractive, shorter battery life notwithstanding.
I'm also considering writing a letter to Apple (if such a move is even possible). Perhaps they already do know of the issue, but it seems to me that it could be in their best interests to simply send people 5th gens. That way they wouldn't have to have so many wasteful returned requests, and customers wouldn't likely ('cept for the USB issue) complain. But there's the problem that 5th gen's aren't made with 40 gb hard drives. Hmm.

  • 4th gen click-wheel iPod not syncing

I have a 40GB 4th Gen click-wheel iPod that although works fine will not sync with my iTunes. I have done all normal troubleshooting items (5R's, restored factory settings, etc.). I am running it on an HP computer and have all software versions up-to-date. Specifically when I place the iPod into the docking station the connection begins, but then a loud whirring occurs and then the "Do Not Connect" message does not go away and I can't eject it. I have no warranty on the unit anymore and need to know if there is a fix or should I just take it to Apple store for troubleshooting.

Its a problem with iTunes 7. Many people are experiencing the same problems.
Here are just a couple examples:

i have here a 20 gb (i think its 4th gen) ipod, you can hear something working inside it when you turn it on, the apple logo appears and then i get the sad face folder icon. i have tried resetting it, when i connect it up to the computer it just shows as charging but it does not shop up on the computer, what can i do to fix it?

    dude you are the man.
i had the same problem. i had the apple symbol, then the sad face appear, the low battery icon. plus the inside of my ipod was making weird clicking noises.
i banged it hard 3 times on the top right corner and it works like a charm!

  • Problems, trying to use backup from 5.1.1 iOS Gen 3 iPod does not sync music to 4th gen iOS 6 iPod.

My 3rd Gen iPod's headphone connector is basically shot, I've had it for around if not over two years now; sometimes I'm surprised it lasted this long; since I am not one who usually listens to her music without headphones, this is problematic, .
Luckily, a family memberI know had a gen 4 iPod, 32g, same space amount as my old one, lying around that they don't use anymore, thank goodness.
Well, in one case, not so much. First of all, said iPod was locked with a passcode (the passcode was guessed so many times because no one could remember it, it locked permenantly) so I had to completely wipe it. However, it wasn't so bad, though all the information was lost, I could finally use iOS 6 on an iPod.
Well, iOS turned out to be a huge problem, in the way of synicing my old backup. I have about, um, an estimated 3000 songs on my 3rd gen iPod, that of which are not all on one computer, and are from multiple computers (my desktop / laptop); I thought all the songs would transfer over with the rest of my things. I didn't think the iOS made a difference.
Lo and behold, I was dead wrong.
When my iPod was restored to my previous backup, it had no music, only my pictures and apps were added. I'd call 'it annoyed me' an understatement. I waited all that time for the ipod to restore and the backup to finish, only to get my one hundered pictures and two apps.
I have tried to look up how to extract music from my iPod, but to no avail, my computer recognizes it as a camera and I can only access the picture files; the way I read you have to do it online, you must be able to actually get into the iPod's folders, besides the picture folders, and I can't seem to do that; there was an option in earlier versions of iTunes that allowed the iPod device to be displayed as something other than a camera but it no longer seems to be an option in the new iTunes.
All the programs for extracting files, specialized for iPod file extraction, actually, cost money, which at the moment, I don't have much of, this iPod was given to me by a family member, and I'm lucky I even have it. Manual extraction is also something I've tried but failed miserably at, as mentioned earlier.
I'm really not up for re-synching one by one, I want this to be as quick and painless as possible. I have the available GB for my 3000 songs (I checked). Most of my songs are mp3s, and some are m4as. Not everything is bought, and not everything is going to be able to be downloaded through iCloud on account of the fact that there are, uh, over 2GB worth of songs, so does anyone have any solutions to my problem here? I have over 50gb in my desktop library alone, loads more in my laptop library, and I really don't feel like separating all the songs from my previous iPod into a single playlist, if there's a more efficient, free solution out there....
This would not have been a problem in the first place, if the passcode was not there; but blame the previous owner of the 4th gen iPod for that. She typed it so many times it locked her out. And so, I had to reset, but not without an automatic update for iOS 6, which my gen3 can't update to, because it's, well, outdated.

Connect the iPod to your computer and update to iOS 6.1.3. You need iTunes 10.7 or later on the computer.

  • Is it worth trading in my iPod Touch 4th Gen. for an iPod Touch 5th Gen.?

And will the iPod Touch 4th Gen. get the iOS 7 update as well? I keep getting mixed answers on this question.

the 4 cannot get iOS7. The 5 can.
If you take your device into an apple store they will give you a 10% discount for recycling your old device.
However I sold my 'like new' condition 4 to best buy for $70 and could have gotten over $100 for it on Amazon, so if you're in the US, you have other options that'll get you more than the $30 or so you'll get from an Apple store (10% of a 32 gig iPad would be around $30)
You can even look into listing it on ebay, craig's list or other places that will buy them. I even have a local used dvd store here that'll buy old devices.
If you're looking to save a few bucks on your new device, I would recommend the other options than the 10% you get from Apple. Find the right place, and depending on the condition of your device (mine was literally like new, not a single scratch) you can get the equivalent of a 30% discount (Using my $70 towards the purchase of a $299 device).....and if I'd wanted to wait a couple of weeks, it'd have been almost 50% if I'd mailed it into Amazon. (I believe at that point in time they would have paid up to $150 for it)

  • Nano 4th gen /auto eject/ desktop icon

Hello. This is driving me crazy: I have been plugging in a 4th gen iPod nano in this Imac (NOT in disk mode) set to auto-eject after syncing AND still getting the icon on the desktop. Today I double-clicked on the ipod icon on the desktop and it disappeared. So my options are to be disk mode (manual eject) or auto-eject but no icon. Will restore help? Trying to solve for young family member. ( The icon shows them it's plugged in, etc.) Any advice appreciated. Snow Leopard, Itunes 9, 4th-gen Ipod Nano. Thanks

i've had something like this happen to me with my 4th gen nano. i just unplug it from the computer (without using the "safely remove hardware" thing), and reset it. If you don't know how to reset the ipod, [check out this article|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320]

  • Fourth replacement ipod - Sad Ipod error - Common link?

    Hi all,
I'm on my fourth replacement 4g 40gig ipod from apple (all covered under warranty). I keep getting unrecoverable sad ipod errors. When I turn on the ipod, I can hear the hard drive start to spin and fail. I have used each replacement ipod on a different computer (dell laptop, custom built pc desktop, ibook, G5 tower), with different song libraries, hoping that the problem was traceable back to some file on one of these machines. The first three ipods I had plugged in to my Belkin car charging unit. Suspecting this might be the problem, I never plugged my fourth into this charger. And it worked! It worked, that is, until I plugged it into an iHome speaker dock. As soon as I plugged it in, it froze. I reset the iPod, and I'm getting another sad ipod error.
I can't reformat it. I can't put it in disk mode. Is there a known issue with third party peripherals that use the dock connector and the 4g ipod? I'm stumped.
If I were to hazard a guess, I would say the problem was gross user incompetence. However, I'm a computer technician (hence my access to all the different computers), and I treat my ipods as the fragile machines they are. Thanks for your help, I'm tired of having apples techs on speed dial

My daughter has had two fourth generation ipods replaced since last May. Now the third, which she's had for six months is acting up ... freezing, emitting the whirl/click noise, not recognized by iTunes and not showing up on the desktop. Each time the drive appears to be stuck and won't respond to the reset command. After whacking it against my hand a couple times I can get it to reset. I've looked at the drive with Apple's Disk Utility, Tech Tool and Disk Warrior and found various disk problems that don't mean anything to me. Each time I've erased the drive with Disk Utility and then run iPod's Software Restore ... and it works for a while. My household owns a Generation 2, a 4w/color screen, a mini and a shuffle and they are all trouble-free. I'm wondering if the drives used in the 4th Generation are the problem. I don't think you should have to spank your ipod periodically to keep it functioning!

  • IPOD SAD FACE ICON ADVICE

thank me later. although this isn't my original idea...this appeared in an old thread, its an awesome solution to a pretty popular problem on these message boards.
i would get the apple symbol, then the sad face appear, the low battery icon, and then my ipod would power off. plus the inside of my ipod was making weird clicking noises.

  • Is there anyway to 'hear' the audio from videos on 4th gen or less iPod

I would like to download some of the 'video podcasts' and only want to 'listen' to them. Is there any way to do this on a 20G iPhoto? I don't need or want the visuals.
PC AMD Athlon XP 1600+ OEM   Windows XP

Only the 5th Generation iPod with video will load video podcast files. Video format files are not compatible with iPods that are not video enabled.

  • 4th Gen iPod and WinXP SP1 Problem

I could not find the answer for this on the support page, and sorry in advanced if it has been asked before. I've had my 4th gen click wheel iPod since last November and it has always been wroking fine for me, until today, when I decided it was time to update the firmware. I decided to do a restore to clean off all the songs before starting (since I have them all on my HD anyway). But when restoring it with the updater, it just went for about 10 seconds, and then said it could not continue. I tried it again and still the same thing. Now i am getting the folder with the exclamation mark icon. The updater restore keeps failing and I don't know what to do

I was having the same problem with facetime just now and found this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHBlxlSnlAQ
It says to reset the DNS to 8.8.8.8,8.8.4.4
The comma is not a typo.  As soon as I did this, my facetime started working.  I had previously tried resetting the DNS to just 8.8.4.4, but that did not work.
I have not tried to use imessage so I don't know if it fixed anything with that.

  • IPod Touch 4th gen won't connect to wi-fi

So I was in my university, when I noticed the iPod suddenly disconected from Wi-Fi.  When I got home, it didn't connect to the home network either, and asked for the network password.  I entered it, and said it was wrong.  I entered it from my iMac, and the password was correct.  What's going on?  It's a 4th gen 64 gb ipod running on iOS 6.  The wireless router is an Airport Extreme Base station.

Yup.  I made it forget the network, tried again.  ZIp, nada.  Tried changing the base station's password, and entered the new one, didn't connect either.  My dad's iPhone 4 connects without any problems, as do the family iMac and MacBook Pro.

  • HT201263 I am trying to recover ipod touch 4th gen and it says waiting for ipod for over 30 minutes

I have attempted to recover and restore my ipod 4th gen and I keep getting a message waiting for ipod and nothing happens

So I had the same problem but in my case, they gave me a new one for free. If they will not give you a new free one, go here: http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/#us
Prices defend on how much gb's of storage your iPod touch has got:
    iPod touch 8 GB (4th gen.)                                $99
    iPod touch 32 GB (4th gen.)                                $149
    iPod touch 64 GB (4th gen.)                                $199
That's a lot when you compare it to the original price, that's also why you should never drop your iPod (what is impossible) and of course buy a case to protect it!
