4x ATI Radeon 2600 XTs
We've just purchased a Mac Pro with 4x 2600's - under the advice of an apple store employee we were led to believe that OSX would be able to use the full 1GB video memory, and that we'd be able to crossfire them under Vista. The more reading we do, the more it seems that this advice was incorrect. Can anyone help to clarify? TIA..
CrossFire doesn't scale all that well. And their knowledge of Windows technology...??

I just received my new Mac Pro on Friday - it shipped with 10.5.4 installed. After looking at some of the new features of Leopard (had only used Tiger previously), I installed all the available updates -- these were:
Mac OS X Update 10.5.5
Aluminum Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0
Java For Mac OS X 10.5 Update 2
iTunes 8.0
Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.2
QuickTime 7.5.5
Remote Desktop Client Update 3.2.2
Front Row Update
All the updates were successful and no issues were apparent until this morning. The fan on the graphics card (ATI Radeon 2600 XT) now seems to be running at full speed, regardless of what is running. Just idling at the Desktop the fan still runs at full speed. A soft reset of the SMC has also been done - no change. Is this a known issue? Is anybody else experiencing this? Normally I would expect a new or even ref'd unit would have the latest fixes and if there still are problems... then there aren't any solutions? One person dropped into Vista and reduced fans to 20% setting and it works even under heavy loads w/o getting above 80C.
Seems like the Nvidia 8800GT costs more, doesn't have the drivers optimized for OpenGL just yet, but runs quieter.
One person complained theirs would making an annoying "up-down-up" fan revving constantly.
A copper cooling kit isn't a option user should have to invest in. Not sure it works with 2600 -

ATI Radeon 2600 XT on Mac Pro 2008 has died
Hi All,
I have recently been having issues with one of my ATI Radeon 2600 XT Graphics cards - choppy graphics, artefacts appearing on the display and endless crashes of the OS.
I have read online about a recall program Apple did run which recalled these exact graphics cards, and after checking the serial number of the card in question, it does indeed match one of the 'bad' batch.
The only problem is - the program ended in July 2011
What are the chances Apple would be kind enough to still swap my card for a new unaffected one?
Thanks

2 x 23" Cinema HD MonitorsWhat are the chances Apple would be kind enough to still swap my card for a new unaffected one?
I'm in the same boat. :\ Mine just died too, would I need to take my tower to an Apple Store? Or how would I go about asking Apple to replace my graphics card?
Also, if I were to put in a different graphics card (say the ATI Radeon HD 5770), how difficult is it to replace? Would my Mac Pro (Early 2008) be able to handle it? I have 2x2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core) processor, the ATI Radeon HD 5770 says it requires Mac Pro (Mid 2010) with PCI Express 2.0 slot and OS X 10.6.4, whereas I'm still on just 10.5 Leopard and have an Early 2008 model...
On another thread, here, The Hatter, said something about baking the card in the oven? Would that work if Apple won't replace it for free?
I have never opened up my tower before (I don't know how!) and I have been wanting to upgrade my RAM as well. I have 4x1GB cards and I wanted to move up to like 8 or 16GB. I was thinking about buying RAM from NewEgg or Amazon, whichever is cheaper, any suggestions?
Thank you for any help and sorry about hijacking the thread! >~< Should I make my own thread or continue in this one? I'm sorry, I just don't want to cause any problems...I will make a new one if need be. -
I have a first edition mac pro, I was told that the ati radeon 2600 would work in it but I can't get it to work. The screen is fuzzy and none of my games will detect it. Do I need to upgrade to leopard to use it.
If you can find someone with Leopard and copy the Radeon 2xxx drivers from the Extensions folder, it might work okay under Tiger. But the card (and drivers) was designed to work under Leopard.

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro, 8 gb ram with a Dell 27” display and a 42” LG TV. I am thinking about upgrading the stock ATI Radeon 2600 graphics card for better resolution, preferring 2 dvi outputs or 1 dvi and 1 vga vs 1 dvi and a mini. I don't do a lot of Final Cut Pro, gaming, etc. I am interested in best value for the graphics card.
Does anyone have any suggestions on the best graphics card for these larger displays for the best value?
Thanks,
KevinI recommend you install nothing older than the Apple-firware 5770, about US$250.
RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
1) Apple brand cards,
2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
1) Apple brand cards:
• Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
• Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
• NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
• NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
• SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
• EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
• running 10.8.3 or later AND
• don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
• can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards" -
ATI Radeon 2600 graphics artifacts
I have a new MacPro with the ATI Radeon 2600 in it. Occasionally, (perhaps 3 times in 5 months)the screen will go completely wacky, with the whole screen turning like a tie die, except not as cool. A restart seems to fix the problem. Right now I am running EFI firmware version 01.00.236. There is an update (to .252) that I have been avoiding because of the increased fan noise and other complaints I have read about, I was hoping for a newer firmware to be released.
Are there MacPro users who have had the card issue, and had it fixed by the new firmware, and is there issues with the .252 firmware that make it worth avoiding?I'm experiencing issues with my new Mac Pro as well, bought it this month. It has the default everything except I've added 8GB OWC ram. Everything passes apple hardware test, multiple times, but a few times now my open windows (all applications) have become "messed up". For example, this is Safari:

GPU improvement on ATI Radeon 2600 PRO versus Win7
I installed Windows 7 with Radeon ATI drivers in Boot Camp and boy does Windows fly and speeds are up I don't know how much. Folding at Home runs at flying speeds. Windows 7 loads applications instantly.
Will iMac 24 with Radeon 2600 PRO be supported VERY soon on Mac OS X 10.6.1 ?

ATI Radeon 2600 PROBLEM: First display wide and second not in mirror mode?
Hi all, I bought a new mac pro with ATI Radeon HD 2600, my problem is this: I have one LCD monitor widescreen 1680x1050 that i use like primary display and one normal CRT television 800x600 that i use like second monior... If i set the "mirror mode" on display the clone reduce automactly my LCD to not wide monitor and i see two black row... Is it possible use the mirror mode in two different monitor? it works only at 1024x768 not 1680x1050 is the video card not enough power? Should be fixed that thing ? Regards
Message was edited by: egariMYou did not understand the true intent of mirror displaying, which adjusts to the lower specifications of the two screens. You would not like to see your CRT display have to accept high bandwith 1680x1050 signal and fry would you ?
Neither is the reduction of the content of a 1680x1050 screen to a 800x600 acceptable, and not only because of the width/height different ratios : text would be pure garbage, except in huge fonts.
So your mac pro adjusted the display to the 800x600 your crt can accept, as my macbook would when connecting to a video projector for presentation, when in mirror mode.
This is obviously the best choice it could have done, you see...
Now, if you want to keep best resolutions in both screen, then you have no other option than to use extended desktop.

Hi,
After installing Lion, the UI was fluid ... but after a while (playing with full screen or hibernation) the grahics just lag and it's not fluid at all ... it is a graphic card problem? Does someone have the same problem ?

ATI Radeon 2600 screen/graphics artifacts - anybody else seeing this?
I got a new Mac Pro (2 X 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Xeon) direct from the Apple on-line store about 3 weeks ago and have been *incredibly impressed* with it.
However, each time I use the machine for an hour or so for anything graphics intensive (e.g. playing a QT movie) I start to get huge polygon "artifacts" on the display:
http://gallery.mac.com/russell.archer#100018/IMG_0030&bgcolor=black
The machine continues to behave solidly in all other respects while the artifacts are displayed (and they shift and change, sometimes disappearing for a second or two). Once the the artifacts have appeared the only way to get rid of them is to reboot, then all is back to normal. If I stick to non-graphic intensive work like using Xcode, VMWare, etc. then I don't have any problems - it seems to be a direct of result of using either QuickTime or other movie-related stuff.
The Mac Pro has never crashed or locked up, even when the screen artifacts are displayed.
I have Leopard 10.5.2 with all the latest updates, including the latest firmware updates.
When the artifacts first appear, there's no noticeable difference in the speed of the fans and looking at all the temperature readings (with Hardware Monitor) everything seems cool.
I've done all the usual stuff like a fresh install, zapping the PRAM, etc.
Looks to me like there's either a problem with the ATI 2600 graphics card drivers or perhaps a temperature-sensitive issue in the actual card hardware (I haven't yet tried speeding up the GPU fan to see if this helps).
So, before I ring Apple support, has anybody been seeing this sort of thing?
Thanks in advance!Hi, I faced this terrible problem too. And I just learnt that it is a bug in the Apple's Open GL drivers. It has to do with Leopard, ATI and Nvidia cards. And I don't know how to solve it! I read on some other forums that it is a problem that ATI acknowledge and there is no solution to it as yet. Mine is worst, lots of distortion, artifacts, coloured triangles, coloured lines, everything that is so nightmarish that affects my work (I need to work on images on photoshop, long hours on the computer). I really need some kind advice from someone. Really very depressed and upset over this Mac Pro that I bought in barely a year.

Questions about ati radeon 2600 on an 2006 mac pro
I know the debate has been going around for awhile about these cards, Apple claims that they are not supported but my card runs as long as you have leopard installed. So far the card has performed great, all my games and graphics programs run beautiful with it but I do have two problems. One is I can only have my display set at 1400 x 1050 any lower setting results in severe blurring on the screen. The other problem is that the text on my screen is some what pixelated and blurry.
I was wondering if there is a fix for this problem or is it just the price I have to pay for running it on a 2006 mac pro.If it is a problem, and you can afford another upgrade, the Radeon 3870 might be your best choice.

HT4664 Can I upgrade my ATI Radeon HD 2600?
Here are my specs.
Is it possible for me to upgrade my ATI Radeon HD 2600? I want to try out FCP X, Compressor and Motion also.
And if so what would be the best way to get my OS and graphics card up to speed? I appreciate yoiur reply. I'm also at Lion 10.6.8
Since I have other important software I haven't wanted to upgrade the OS but I will if I like the new FCP.

I downloaded the 30 day trial version and it will not let me open FCP X. Everytime I attempt to open the trial version I get a message that says,
"This system does not meet the minimum system requirements for graphics cards. For more information on minimum system requirements, visit the Tech Specs page on the Final Cut Pro website."
When I look at the specs for FCP X, I don't see the ATI Radeon 2600 as a graphics card that can be used by FCP X. That's why I'm looking to upgrade, at least my graphics card for starters. -
Resetting a video card? (ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT)
So here's my issue. I am trying to connect a secondary monitor to my mac pro (10.5.8). The card in the machine is a ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT. The only port that seems to work on the card is "#2" (or the left port while looking at the card from the back of the machine).
Both monitors work when plugged into #2 so I know the problem is not with the monitors/cables. This leads me to believe the card has some issues. I used a secondary screen on this machine about a month ago and had no problems. Not to say the card isn't bad, but is there any way to reset this card or flush out some sort of cash/preference to see if that works?
I have done the obvious "Detect Displays", and have flushed the PRAM of the machine, I've tried booting it up with no screens, just one screen, etc. I've tried booting with one screen hooked up to port #1 and it never get any signal so I'm thinking it's a dead port unless I can somehow "refresh" this. System Profiler just shows whichever screen is connected to port #2 and "No display connected" for whatever is in port #1
Any ideas? I've done just about everything I can think of. I tried installing the firmware update too for the card, but on trying to do so it said that I couldn't because I was already running the latest firmware.

--------------ok walter, we gonna help you no problem. maybe try shutting down your mac pro and
using some compressed air and clean that out, especially the ATI Radeon 2600. Dust bunnies love the video cards. then restart, open up disk utility and repair permissions
if you can. If not, then yes, your video card is probably dying. Go to the Apple at the corner of your screen and click on "About this Mac" and it should tell you what kind of Mac Pro you have. As far as I know the ATI 5770 would be a good replacement for your ATI 2600. Apparently they were known to collect dust pretty easily, or so I was told. do you have Applecare? otherwise, I think it's gonna be around $300. Luckily installation isn't too hard. Oh, and you're probably going to need to have 10.6 already installed on your Mac Pro, I think

Mac Pro and Radeon 2600 HD Snow Leopard 10.6.7 and 10.6.8 Crash
I have a Mac Pro, 2009 quad core xeon 2.8ghz with a ATI Radeon 2600 HD video card. The computer is running 10.6.8 currently. With 10.6.7 and 10.6.8 the comptuer crashes frequently. Looking through the logs, I see some errors thrown by the kernel when it crashes. There are some relating to the WindowServer, which reports as being "stuck" by the process monitor. When this happens, the screen locks up and nothing on the screen moves except the mouse. If I was watching a movie for example, the movie on the screen would freeze but the audio would continue to play. I am still able to ssh into the computer and send a shutdown command to turn it off (or my wife powers it down by hitting the button). It is driving me nuts trying to figure out what's going on.
Steps I have taken to correct this:
Reinstall OS from scratch on another disk 10.6 to 10.6.7 combo updater
Flash the PRAM
Run the computer's diagnostic utility from original disk (ran three times, no problems detected)
Reinstall OS from scratch on yet another disk 10.6 to 10.6.8 combo updater
Remove all USB and Firewire devices
Smash head against screen and table
Steps not taken yet
buy new computer
buy new video card
smash computer in frustration
Below are the log files for my last crash from this morning. At 7:43, I woke the computer from sleep. The following is everything that is displayed in the All messages section of the console until a reboot. Anyone have any idea on how to fix this or what I can do? Any help would be appreciated.

HDX 9010nr, Radeon 2600 will not work with WIndows 7
Apparently, HP is not going to support the HDX 9010nr for Windows 7. That's the bad news, the good news is that it "mostly" works.
The only big issue is that the display driver stops every few minutes and then restarts. So you sit there for thirty seconds while the machine recovers. But, it doesn’t support a second screen; and worse, every 10th time the video driver crashes; it locks up the whole machine.
ATI has a version of the Radeon 2600 software that worked with the Release Candidate (RC) of Windows 7, but it will not work with the shipped version of Windows 7. ATI recommends that you get a version from your hardware vendor. Which brings me back to the first sentence. HP isn't supporting the 9010nr.
The question is do any of the "supported" HP laptops have the ATI Radeon 2600? If so, might that work on the HDX 9010nr?
This question was solved.
