  • Soft Chirping noise 3-5 times per second

I've had my Macbook since 2009, and since this morning it's been making a chirping noise, possibly from the optical disk drive, roughly 4 times per second. It stops for about a second every 10 minutes, but other than that it has been repetitively chirping all day. I haven't dropped it or anything like that. Please help!

take it in for service.  It is very difficult to diagnose a sound without having the mac present.  That's like someone asking "my car is making a chirping noise, what's wrong?" without the car infront of the mechanic (just making this comparison because I was a mechanic and people would call us on the phone and ask questions like that) it's difficult to tell.  It could be anything..and needs to be diagnosed properly in person.

  • My iPad built in speakers was making some kind of static clicking noise, should i be worried?

I was on my iPad (iPad 4th Generation) when I started hearing some kind of clicking sound like the sound you hear when someone touches you with static electricity, this happened every time I touched the screen to type. it also happened when I played and paused music (only clicked once for playing and pausing music). Also when I played music it sounded like only the left side of the speaker was playing the music therefore there was no right side of the music, basically it wasn't playing the song in stereo and I could only hear one side of the song. However it stopped when I fiddled with the side volume buttons, now it hasnt happned again, but I'm still worried.

Intermittent power problems are usually a sign of something about to go wrong. Get your machine in to a Genius Bar (or other Authorized Apple Service Provider) to have it checked out. In the meantime go to Disk Utility and check the SMART status. It might tell you that nothing is wrong but it can't hurt to look. A logic board issue could be looming for you. The loud (screeching)  noise usually signals a HD problem. On-again / off-again behavior is not uncommon when something is on its way to dysfunction.

  • Set Up Airport Extreme with Static IPs and DHCP same time

I have Verizon Fios to my Business with 5 Static IP Address. One of them must be assigned to the Airport Extreme Base Station. I have 5 iMacs needing internet connection of which 2 need to use a static ip,( Filemaker Server and my Mac OS X Web Server). I also use 2 iPhones with a custom App accessing that FileMaker Server via the internet too. I want to set up my Airport Extreme Base Station to have those 2 iMacs connected with static ips , which must NEVER CHANGE, via an ethernet cable and all the rest wireless with WiFi. Do to the size of my building I also want another Airport Extreme or Express to just expand the range from the Base Station for the wireless connections only. Looking at the Airport Internet Settings I only see 3 options for Connection Sharing, "Share A Public IP Address", "Distribute a range of IP addresses", "Off (Bridge Mode)". I'm thinking I need to give 1 IP Address to the Base Station, 2 ip addresses to my servers, then 1 ip address to share for my wireless DHCP connections. The additional Airport set to Off(Bridge Mode) to expand the base station. Please advise on how I would set up that base station to do this.

With respect to expanding the base stations range, in the Base stations Wireless Settings I would click to select "Allow this network to be extendeded". Then what settings would I need in the Additional Airport?
Note: Both AirPorts would have to be 802.11n models in order for this to work. The additional AirPort would need to be configured to extend the Extreme. (ref: AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless > Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network)
Would that NEED to be connected to the base station via ethernet cable or will it pick up the base station wirelessly?
Using the "extend" feature is intended to expand the wireless range of an AirPort with another wirelessly. You would not need to connect them by Ethernet. In this configuration, the additional AirPort would be in bridge mode and will pass through the IP information from the other base station's DHCP service.

  • Logic Pro 9 - Recorded audio just silly with crackling, clicking noise

PLEASE!!! Read my entire post before commenting. I don't mean to sound rude but I've posted this in several other forums and it's obvious they hadn't read/understood my issue based on the comments they left, ie., suggesting everything I've already tried, saying to contact tech support and even asking what comp and DAW I'm using... I've been dealing with this issue for ~8 months
    SPECS
    I use 2 daisy-chained Firepods connected to a Mac Pro Quad-core running 10.6.5 and Logic Pro 9.1.3.
I get the results described below whether I'm trying to record at 24 or 16 bit and at either 44.1K or 48K.
Generally I record 12 tracks simultaneously AND I always use the same inputs for each instrument; ie., Vocals = track 11, guitar = track 2, bass = track 1, etc...*
    PROBLEM
Although this is a sporadic issue it happens to occur WAY more than it doesn't; ie., very rarely do I get a recording session without the anomaly.
The issue is that after I have recorded a session and listen back to the recorded material there are random crackles, pops, clicks throughout. When I audition tracks individually, some may have no crackling and some will have crackling at different points in time and of varying intensity. Every session is different as well, no two sessions are the same. One day I may have a perfect vocal track and a guitar track that is just silly with the crackling. The next day the guitar track may be fine but now the vocal track is all messed up with crackling. Another confounding point is that the crackling does not occur during periods of silence.
I will add that each Firepod appears to function properly (with no issue) all by it's lonesome - but that doesn't help me, I need 12 inputs minimum!
    Things I've Tried
    1. All new FW cables
    2. Disconnecting the FW cable that goes from the Firepod to the Mac. Turn on the Mac. Turn on both Firepods, master first. Connect the FW cable that goes from the Firepod to the Mac. Launch Logic.
    3. Disconnecting the FW cable that goes from the Firepod to the Mac. Turn on the Mac. Launch Logic. Turn on both Firepods, master first. Connect the FW cable that goes from the Firepod to the Mac.
    4. Tried every conceivable configuration of Audio Midi Setup.
    5. Tried several other FW and USB audio interfaces, obtaining perfect results.
    6. Been working with Apple tech support (both hardware and Logic support).
    7. I've checked that both Firepods have the same firmware version.
    8. Installed a fresh SATA HD with clean installs of both OS10.6.5 and Logic Pro 9.1.3 with fresh custom templates and no 3rd party plugins or loops.
    9. Lots of praying, swearing and fits of anger.
    Final Comments
First, I think that the chassis FW connectors on the firepods are absolute garbage (read, cheap, cheap, cheap) and are inferior to anything else I have encountered during my troubleshooting process.
Last, I will go ballistic if I hear one more Presonus rep say anything to the effect of, "Huh! Never heard of anyone else experiencing the symptoms you're describing..." Yes, I have spoken adnauseum with Presonus tech support with zero results.
Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Pancenter! I'll try to be brief. LOL
I had 4 perfect multi-track sessions and then the gremlin woke up and and cast his spell... Frustrating... The biggest difference I enjoyed using your suggestion was that when I launched Logic, loaded my template, enabled my tracks and hit record, the session started without a hitch. Prior to your suggestion, I would have to futz around with Logic audio prefs, AMS settings, turning the Firepods off/on, quitting/restarting Logic and/or shutting down/restarting my Mac Pro just to get the session to show my enabled tracks had activity. I would not know if the session would have the noise artifacts until playback. I should add that I never had this problem with my PPC G5 nor did I for the first 10 months of use with this Mac Pro. Also, with the help of Apple tech support we had eliminated Logic, 10.6.5 and the Mac Pro (except the FW800 bus) as probable causes. Again each Firepod and Logic work flawlessly when I use one unit not daisy-chained. So, I think there is no problem with the individual units, and, as I said, both units worked fine chained with my PPC Mac Pro.
So, I called Presonus. Again... And I get yet another tech who tells me something different; every time I speak with Presonus I get different suggestions. This guy asked what kind of cable I was using to connect the Firepods to the Mac Pro and I said I'm using a *firewire 9-pin to 6-pin cable*. So has asks well, is it *bilingual*? He said that would def fix my problem. I told him it is advertized as bilingual and that had not fixed the problem; he had no answer for that. Then, I broached the option of adding a firewire 400 card to my Mac Pro. He said I guess you could try that; get one with a TI chipset. That's where I'm at now, deciding which one to get and whether I will need to provide auxiliary power to the card's on-board molex plug.
    Any ideas?
    Oh, thanks for responding

  • What's with the CLICKING noise after every edit?

In the latest version of GB, whenever I make a simple splice to a voice track, there's a CLICK artifact at the tail of every edit. In order to remove it, I have to zoom in and really play with the length of the clip to get rid of the click. This is REALLY annoying because I know I'm not cutting during an active waveform. In other words, there's "silence" when I make the cut, yet I keep getting an audible CLICK every time. The old version of GB did NOT do this. A clean cut was a clean cut. This is obviously a bug. Does anyone know of a workaround to avoid this artifact? Thanks!

    Generally speaking it's:
720x480 @ 29.97 fps for NTSC (or 23.976 for NTSC Film)
      720x576 @ 25 fps for PAL
Anamorphic video formats (e.g 16:9 aspect) is accomplished either by (rarely) scaling the image down and including black pixels at the top and bottom of the image, or (usually) by the setting a flag which tells the DVD player to stretch the pixels horizontally, scaling the image and automatically adding black at top and bottom if needed.

  • CDs all burn with static-scratchy noise

    Hi all,
All my CDs I am burning out of iTunes have horrible static and scratchy sound on them. I have changed CDs to no avail. Anyone else have this issue? Oh, it's a clean burner also.

It looks like you're an iTunes for Windows user, but your post has been placed here in the iTunes for Mac forum.
Be that as it may, I might still suggest that, unless you're burning music you've purchased from the iTunes Music Store, you use software such as Nero to burn audio CDs.

  • I have a serious issue with static (clicking sounds) when I use Netflix streaming along with any movies I rent via AppleTV, and yes I use a optical audio cord.  Any suggestions?

Was is most interesting, is that if I watch other content like MLB TV using the sound bar and optical cable, I don't have this issue, it's all very strange.  Any suggestions?

Perhaps it's obvious to you, but what would I adjust in the midi settings?  There's nothing obvious that speaks to this out of sync issue.
FYI, I just plugged my JBL creatures into the audio out (same physical jack as the digital out, though of course they use different technologies) and there is no sync problem with the audio played through them.  Clearly it's an issue with the digital out, just wish I could figure out if it's my stereo or something in the computer.  I have no other devices that accept a digital input, so can't swap the stereo out for anything else.

  • Adobe Flash, latest version, is hitting the disk hundreds of times per second with disk reads and writes for no obvious reason. Is this normal? If not, ...

I am running Firefox 18 on Windows 7, all with latest updates. The Adobe Flash plugin (latest version) hits the disk with hundreds of reads and hundreds of writes each second. This seems to start as soon as cnn.com is loaded then as other sites are loaded it just gets worse. Any thoughts on what might be causing this? Is it normal? If not normal, how can I can stop it?

I do not really have any solid suggestions for this but
    * 11.6.602.168 is now the latest version. You were using Flash 11.5 r502 <br />Have you now updated ?
    * Hardware acceleration issues are sometimes resolved by upgrading Graphics drivers <br /> [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Flash often causes issues with Firefox. From Flash 11.3 some Windows users were needing to disable Flash's ''protected mode''. Rather a longshot but it may be worth experimenting with the protected mode and trying turning it off.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Flash#Flash_Player_11.3_Protected_Mode_-_Windows
    Potential workarounds would be
#look at the pageinfo media. Use Ctrl + I -> |Media| to see what is on the pages
    # If you do not want that content to play automaticaly consider add-ons like http://noscript.net/ &/or [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/flashblock/ Flashblock] or one of the related addons.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro make a clicking noise when i lift it up.

Hi i just recently got a MacBook Pro. I get this weird clicking noise from the right side of the trackpad. I don't know why its doing this noise but i think its got something to do with the superdrive or cd drive. This only happens when i pick it up or rotate it around on my lap.

Just to clarify... and in case you're not familiar with how hard drives work... There are metal platters in your hard drive that spin at either 5400 or 7200 times per minute (that's either 90 or 120 times per second respectively). There is a little read head that floats less than a papers width above that super fast spinning platter. If you bump your computer while the read/write head is over the platter, there is a chance it can bump into the spinning platter causing permanent damage to it. As a result, hardware manufacturers have developed ways to lock the head when a "sudden motion" is detected in order to reduce the chance of damage. In some cases (like the MacBooks), it is built into the notebook itself... in other cases, the technology is built into the drive. The clicking you hear, as others have indicated, is the sound of the drive head locking... it's a good thing.

  • Tecra M10-12M - clicking noises and slight stuttering

I have a strange but serious sound problem with my Tecra M10-12M from December 2008.
It started occurring a month or two ago and behaves like this:
After restarting Vista Professional the sound is perfect.
I use my computer all day long, then put it in Sleep mode at night. The problem starts with occasional clicking noises and slight stuttering, then gradually gets worse. After 3 to 4 days the PC becomes impossible to listen to or use with Skype.
I'm a competent IT person and have tried to systematically close down all applications, services and processes to see if I could find an offender that caused the problem. I didn't and I have also checked that I have the latest drivers for the Realtek High Definition Audio (with EC). I also tried disabling all enhancements in the sound properties.
The only thing that helps is restarting. The sound is then perfect again right away and for a few days.
A good sample of this phenomenon can be found at http://www.netwv.net/Sound.mp3. Though the example comes from Skype, note that this is not a Skype related problem. But Skype is an important tool for me and this problem really completely disables my PC when it comes to using Skype and listening to other sound.
Any suggestions to solve this will be greatly appreciated!
    Willy

    >The only thing that helps is restarting. The sound is then perfect again right away and for a few days.
Hm thats strange seems its not a sound driver issues as you updated the sound driver as well.
Im not quite sure what could cause this clicking noise when using the Skype
Maybe you should to reinstall the Skype too.
If this will not help then you should clean the OS using the CCLeaner. This tool is for free and cleans the registry and OS.
But if you will still notice the sound issue then you should check if new OS installation would help.
For this you should use the Toshiba recovery disk!

  • Fixed line static/crackling noise

Hello All Just want to see what ppl's opinions are on where to go from here. I've been a having a problem with static/crackling noise on the fixed line for about 2 months now.  When Tech No. 1 came out, he said he changed something at the pillar, which is located somewhere between my house and the exchange. After he left, I got a text message saying the line test was ok. But it wasn't really ok, but I left it to see if there were any improvements. Fast forward to two months later, I noticed the noise was just as bad. So I reported the fault online and got a call from a lady the next day saying the fault would be investigated and repaired within x number of days. Then on Sunday, Tech No. 2 came out to my house without any notice at all. He too said that he changed some part. The line was actually ok when he called my home number using his mobile. But today, the noise is back. Should I report the fault again and hopefully one day Telstra might actually replace the line? What do ppl here think? Thanks.

If it's within 14 days of the callout by the engineer, you should be able to get an engineer out on the same incident. Definitely call, and have it checked. I asume you have filters, and no doubt they've told you that "if the problem is on your equipment then you pay the cost" etc etc So it's obviously outside your premises, and there may be something seriously going wrong on the lines/exchange if it's simply not lasting.

  • Blank drop-downs when using LOV with static VO

Hello, I am using JDeveloper 11.1.2.3.0
I have set some attributes to display as LOV. The attributes that are connected with Entity Based VO are fine but those that are connected with Static List VO not. In the second case I am getting drop-downs with blank values on it. Does anyone have any idea why does this happen?
PS: The application was working fine, but after I restarted JDev I got this error. Now I restarted it again and again but with no result.

    Hi,
don't see how we can help unless you provide details steps for how you set up the static LOV.

When I take video with my HTC 8X the sound covered up with static noise, similar to the old TV white screen noise.

    mellosteve,
This isn't a known issue with the device so I am surprised that you are having these issues. When you first noticed the issue, was anything else done on the device at that time? Any new apps added, etc? Let's try to put the phone into Safe Mode and test. If it works while in Safe Mode, we will know it could be a 3rd party app causing the static. Here are the steps to put the phone into Safe Mode: http://vz.to/1MrjzMg
