4x3 DVDSP Menus from 16x9 anamorphic video

Title: 4x3 DVDSP Menus from 16x9 anamorphic video
Goal: Create 4x3 scaled videos from 16x9 anamorphic asset
Asset: NTSC - CCIR 601 / DV ( 720 x 480 ) from Sony DCR SR-300
Solution:
Create a sequence; cmd-0 to see settings;
Turn on Pixel Aspect Ratio anamorphic 16:9 ( this makes the Canvas look like wide screen )
Select custom frame size; Set WidthxHeight 480x480 ( Canvas now looks 4:3)
Because:
Pixels are 16:9 so while 640x480 is in 4:3 ratio, the pixels are wide so the frame is wide
Meaningfully mnemonically: 480 is three-quarters of 16 so reducing the frame width to 480 gives you fewer pixels wide but the wider pixels push the outside dimensions of the canvas to the 4:3 you need for the DVDSP menu display.
Caveat:
When loading a clip into the sequence, say No to setting the Seq Settings to the Clip settings.
You've customized the sequence and you don't want the clip to change you sequence customization.
Verification:
I saved this as a QT Ref Movie; loaded it to a DVDSP 4:3 Menu and it looked the way I expected.

  • How do I capture 16:9 video from an s-video source (CS6)?

I work for a church and we live stream and record our services each week. Our live stream looks fine (in 16:9) but we are outputting to adobe premiere cs6 with an s-video cable. When I capture it only allows 4:3 capture and it squeezes everything. It's absolutely terrible. Can anyone help me please??  Thanks!

    S-Video into Premiere?
Are you using a third-party capture card or looping through a deck?
Is the signal coming directly from a single camera or from a switcher?
Regardless, S-Video does not carry an HD signal.
Premiere alone is only capable of capturing SD or HDV video by Firewire,
and both are 4x3 aspect ratio.
16x9 HD video must be imported, not captured.
    note:
If you are looping through a HDV deck for capture,
you should just go ahead and record to HDV tapes,
then capture from the deck to Premiere via Firewire.

  • Video Quality on dvdsp Menus

Hi Ive just moved from iDVD to DVDSP
and noticed the Quality of the Video on DVDSP Menus looks very poor compared to Video on menus
    IDVD?

What are you doing with the menus? What sort of video are you bringing in?
To get the best quality, you should send your standard definition video through Compressor and create a MPEG-2 file. Create your overlay file in Photoshop. Bring both files into DVD SP and define your button areas. Do not add any text or graphics with DVD SP.

  • Down converting 4X3 to 16X9 anamorphic during capture

Is it possible to down convert SD 4X3 to 16X9 anamorphic during capture in FCP 7? If so, how?
    Camcorder: Canon Vixia HV30.
    Thanks,
    bon

DOWNCOVERT? Downconvert means going from LARGER to smaller. HD to SD. You want to convert 4:3 into 16:9? Where is the extra information to fill the gaps coming from?
Nope, you need to capture, then enlarge the image to fill a 16:9 frame...and you will lose quality as you blow the image up about 33-50%...and you will lose the image on the top and bottom of the frame.

  • Can I burn a DVD with both 4:3 and 16:9 from a HD video edited in FCP

I created a video in FCP from a HD video camera. I usally burn a wide screen DVD, but this time I want to burn a 4:3 dv DVD. Can this be done? And if it can how would I do it? Please help.

    Hi:
In DVDSP you can set 16:9 tracks/menus to display letterboxed in 4:3 TVs and full screen in 16:9 ones. In the item properties you must set as Display Mode: 16:9 letterbox (no Pan&Scan).
No need to re-edit the source in a 4:3 timeline.
    Hope that helps !

  • Anamorphic video in Motion

Seems to be a problem everytime I bring anamorphic video from FCP 5 into Motion 2. What looks to be 16x9 looking in FCP gets squeezed everytime I export my project from FCP to Motion. Is there a way to work in Motion with my video transfering as I see it in FCP? Please help!!!

Adam is right on. Plus, back in FCP, sometimes the Motion project loses the anamorphic flag. In the Browser, scroll over to the Anamorphic column and add a checkmark if needed (this won't affect your timeline clip, just the Browser clip, so right-click the timeline clip and choose item properties and do the same thing).

  • Anamorphic video plays as 4:3

    Hello all.
Can anyone explain to me how I can create an anamorphic (16:9) video from an anamorphic source (16:9) in iDVD5? No matter what I do it plays as 4:3 and makes everything look squeezed.
    Thanks

I can't speak for iDVD 5 as I never had it, but this was a perennial bug in iDVD 6 until fixed by iDVD 7.
But the following should work for you:
The object of the exercise is to ‘fix’ all constituent parts of the project (video, titles, theme, effects, even audio!) in the desired 16:9 aspect to avoid producing a DVD where the movie is in 16:9 and the menu is in 4:3 (the bug in iDVD 6) or where other irritating surprises lurk in your project, which you only discover after burning a coaster!
First go to http://www.mydvdedit.com/index.php?lang=english and download myDVDedit. This is shareware although the download is free. Send the guy a few dollars/euros, he deserves it. While you are there, read all about it. Now install it in your Applications Folder. You will need it later.
You have finished your iMovie project with music, transitions and so on, and saved it to you Movies Folder. Before you started the project you naturally set it to DV Widescreen.
Open iDVD. Give the project a name, and save it as Widescreen if it didn’t default to the same aspect as your iMovie project. Now import the iMovie project into iDVD, choose a theme (any theme you like, even if it prefers to stay at 4:3) and save the project. Do what you would normally do to the theme and its drop zones. Save the project.
Now save as Disk Image on your desktop. Leave it there for the moment when it has finished/appeared.
Open your Movies Folder. Create a new folder. Name it PROJECTNAME – TS FILES (where ‘projectname’ is the name of your project!). Close the folder. You can of course call it anything you like, but this aids identification.
Now double-click the disk image on your desktop. It contains two folders: AUDIO_TS (which is empty, but please pretend that it isn’t) and VIDEO_TS. Drag and drop these to the folder you created in your Movies Folder. (This takes a moment).
Click on the AUDIO_TS folder and go to Get Info in the file menu. Right down the bottom is where you have to change the permissions. Under ‘Ownership & Permissions’ change this from Read Only to Read & Write. Click the small triangle next to Details, scroll down and click on ‘Apply to enclosed items’. You will be asked for your root password. Close the get info window, and now click on the VIDEO_TS folder and do the same. Close the Projectname-TS Files folder. You have now allowed yourself to change the properties of the contents of those folders, which leads us to the next all-important step.
Open myDVDedit. Go to File and open the projectname TS Files folder. By all means stare at it shock and awe, but don’t bother finding out what it can do, except for the following:
Top left you fill see a list of files. Lower centre you have a large window. On the vertical menu to the left of that, click te middle one (VTS or VMG).
In the window at the top left, ignore ‘First Play’ (if there was anything to correct in that, myDVDedit will have done so and told you).
Click on VMG Menu en (English). Now the whole thing springs to life.
Set Coding Mode to MPEG-2 (if it isn’t already)
Set Standard to PAL (or NTSC if that is what you want)
Set Aspect to 16:9 (not any of the other options)
    Now save the file.
Click on VTS Menu 1 en (English) and repeat as above.
Click on VTS Menu 2 and repeat as above.
You have now permanently ‘fixed’ the entire contents of the TS folder (the disk image) in 16:9 aspect. Close myDVDedit – you won’t need it again until the next project!
If you have Toast 7 Titanium, open it. ‘Select DVD-Video from VIDEO_TS’. Choose Select from the main Toast window and select your projectname-TS Files folder. You are now ready to burn! You can set the burn speed (2x recommended) before the burn commences. Allow Toast to verify the burn before you eject the DVD-R disk.
If you don’t have Toast 7, then I assume you can burn the projectname-TS Files folder (disk image) via Disk Utility. I say ‘assume’ only because I have never tried it that way.
Either way, you now have a DVD which will play as 16:9 widescreen on any TV set, even the old ones where you can’t ask it to letter-box.

  • Export with Anamorphic video

I've been working on getting a good rip of my Hunt for Red October DVD working for the AppleTV recently, but I've run into a problem. I ripped the DVD with Strict Anamorphic in Handbrake, and I also cropped it. The issue with cropping is this striped out the subtitles for the russian part of the film. Later on I went in and recreated the subtitles as a text track and added them into the movie. From here I can export the video with the text track, and quicktime will superimpose the text and reexport the text with the video.
The problem that arises is that the video I'm exporting was anamorphic source, and I want to maintain that so I don't have to re-encode the entire video at a new resolution. Is there any way to maintain anamorphic video within quicktime during an export?

I'm simply wondering if I can export a video from quicktime while keeping the video in an anamorphic frame.
I'm not asking for help using Handbrake on a DVD that I legally own.

  • Anamorphic video?

Can DVD Studio Pro 3 support anamorphic video?

    Yes.
There is no technical difference that I am aware of between anamorphic and linear (or Academy aspect) video. This is why you so often see punter's TV sets with pictures on them that are the wrong shape. Also, there is a flag you can set in the MPEG stream (when coding in Compressor - part of the DVDSP package) that tells the DVD player (but, not of course, necessarily the TV set) that the video to output is anamorphic 16:9 .

  • How do I download a movie from my ipad2 video app to apple tv

How do I view a recently downloaded movie from my Ipad2 video app to Apple TV?

If it is from the iTunes store you can watch it from iCloud on ATV.  If it is not from the iTunes store the next best option is to add it to your local copy of iTunes and have ATV play it from there.  You can always do it from AirPlay but that is a very error prone and degrages the quality.

  • Imovie 09 How do I stop Imovie from auto importing video from iphoto

Imovie 09 How do I stop Imovie from auto importing video from iphoto.
Hi I've done a lot of searches on how to do this but no answers found.
Imovie is beginning to become really slow because of the large number of video's. It takes 3 minutes to startup. Editing is sometimes slow lot's of spinning beach balls e.t.c.
I would like to only import the video I want to edit and hopefully get a quicker Imovie in the process.
My Iphoto library is about 95 Gbyte in size.
My mac has 4 gb ram and I use the internal disk.
Any other ways to work with Imovie/Iphoto are also welcome.
    regards

I won't get iMovie 9 till Tuesday, but based on what you said I may need to take some precautions. One reason I didn't like iMovie 8 is because it automatically imported everything in iPhoto library. What I'm going to do is create a new iPhoto library before importing the photos/videos from the camera. Or if you already have it in your main iPhoto library copy only the photos you'll use in your iMovie 9 project to the new library. Then start iPhoto while pressing the option key which will allow you to select the new iPhoto library you have created. Then I suppose that when you start iMovie 9 it will automatically import only the photos/videos from the new library.

Try installing Perian or VLC. Some AVIs require a codec which simply isn't available for Mac OS X.

I was told I don't need a firewire, that USB would work if I'm just capturing. If I need a firewire what kind (the one I was sold didn't fit). I'm getting an "unable to locate external device message". Not sure of next steps to try. Thanks.

Forget USB for capturing from tape. USB is only for stills from a Tape Based camera.
    You require a firewire cable.
The camera connection end will be four pin and the Mac is nine pin to the 800 port.
Ask for a 9 to 4 pin firewire cable. Sounds like you have the wrong one as they can also be 4 to 4 or 4 to 6 pin!!
Also you will need the correct Easy Setup in FCE so FCE talk to the camera, exactly which one depends on what type of footage is being sent to FCE from the camera during capture.
