4x512MB - adding 2x1GB: What is the best configuration?

Hello,
I just ordered a MacPro with 4x512MB installed from Apple and an additional 2x1GB from MaxUpgrades.com. (For a total of 4GB)
What is the best way to install the ram on the riser cards to get the best performance for my memory scenario?
Looking forward to your suggestions.

Best way is to put the 2x1GB on one riser card in the slots closest to the motherboard. Put 2x512MB on the other riser card close to the motherboard. The question is what to do with the last 2x512MB - I'd say it would be best putting them on the same riser as the 2x1GB in the 2 slots away from the motherboard. You basically want the higher capacity 2x1GB DIMMs on the same riser card close to the motherboard.

  • What is the best configuration with Mac Book air, time capsule and external hard drive?

Hi, I just bought a MacBook Air with the new Time Capsule and I was wondering what is the best set up:
Option 1: use the time capsule as my main drive and back it up onto an external drive plugged at the back of it
or Option 2: use the external drive as the main drive and use the time capsule as the back up? in that case, would the ext drive need to be plugged to the MacBook Air?
    Many thanks

Option 2 is far superior.. and actually the only one that works.
That is without killing yourself or having continual issues accessing your files.
You do need to plug the external disk into the MBA.

  • What is the best configuration for 2 AP's Broadcasting? same SSID/channel?

So i have 2 WRT54G version 2.0 wireless routers. They are not doing DHCP for my home network, i have another device (Sonicwall Firewall) that is taking care of that. Originally I had 1 wireless router (acting as just an access point, but I now have an additional one and want to add it to extend wireless coverage.
My question is this. How do i make it so that laptops can roam around my house and switch from AP to AP depending on which one has the best signal? Is this possible?
I figure that i would have to obviously disable DHCP on each router. But what about SSID's. Can they be the same? What channel should i use, the same for both, or different channels?
Any help would be awesome, Thank you!
    -Aaron

For a roaming network both access points must have the identical SSID and identical security settings. Regarding the channel it is difficult to say. They should be different as broadcasting on the same channel creates interference. Better whould be to use non over-lapping channels, e.g. channel 1 & 6. The problem, however, are the clients. Some clients have difficulty with roaming across channels.
I had two access points with channel 1 & 6. My laptop worked fine in all locations with interruption. However, my WiFi-IP-Phone had troubles. It seems to search the channels from 1 up, thus I was able to roam from channel 1 to 6 but never back. The phone just disconnected.
So, I would recommend to use different channels and test if your clients can roam without problems. If you'll find that one does not properly work try to put them on the same channel. Also: be patient when changing the configuration. I would even recommend to power cycle the router after each change of channel as well as the client. In the beginning I never did that and very often it did not work in the beginning but after an hour it work. I suppose this was because I was using WPA2 and some problems due to the rotation encryption keys WPA2 is using...

  • Netgear Stora, what is the best configuration for smooth operation

I have a Netgear stora, and I know how to configure the best possible way this system for Mac NAS. It always gives me problems and the NAS system invites me to visit the Apple community.
In Windows XP system and Windows 7 works correctly.
Can you help please, I do not know if you need another type of program, or if my mac must have a particular program to work or any particular update, since this update to version 10.7.4.
    Thank you very much.

    thanks Rick
what about the differences in the two processor
    options.
is there really a noticeable difference?
    thanks
    niko
I seriously doubt that there would be. My 2.16Ghz iMac is plenty fast and I doubt that most people would be able to tell the difference between it and the 2.33. By FAR the most important upgrade is RAM. Don't get the extra RAM from Apple though -- it's too expensive and the RAM is easily upgradeable. Buy it from Crucial and install it yourself. I got 2 gigs from them for $85 plus shipping. Just remember, there are only 2 RAM slots so if you want to max it out at 3 gigs you will have to get a 2 gig stick and a 1 gig.

  • What is the Best Configuration for using SSD & HDD Internal Drives in iMac?

    Hi,
I have a Refurbished 2011 21.5" iMac. It came with a 1TB HDD. I had a 120GB SSD custom installed by Other World Computing.  I would like to reap the speed benefits of having the OS and applications reside on the SSD and having most of my heavy, frequently used data on the HDD.  I've considered simply going the route of changing the advanced settings of my user configuration so that my home directory is located on the HDD.  I've read this is an ok solution, but that there may be better ways to do this to get the best out of the available speed of the SSD.  Could anyone recommend better options?
For reference, I use apps like Photoshop Lightroom, the NIK suite of photo editing applications and Photoshop CS6 pretty heavily.  I don't do much movie editing or production...only occasional slideshows in iMovie...although I do keep a lot of old, imported, video footage of my kids on my HDD and on my backup system.
    Thanks,
    Ben Shugart

  • What is the best configuration for XP on a MacPro?

    Situation: Macpro (the old one)
3 hardrives; 1st is the Mac OSX HD
    2nd Windows XP
    3rd Extra Data
this is how my setup is, but i notice my computer makes a louder noise as before, why is this?
would you recommend this setup or install XP on the same drive as Mac OSX?
    which one works best?

    Hi Dion,
when you had OSX and Windows on one HD, was this the only HD in your Mac Pro or do you had all three HDs back then too ?
Cause the more HDs you have in your MAc Pro, the more heat they produce, which can result in higher fan speeds and/or a more often up-spin of the fans.
The startup of XP (after the 'Option'-key choice) is indeed rather slow, at least much slower than OSX.
My guess is that the BIOS-to-EFI emulation that OSX makes to enable XP to boot is taking some time.
XP is only using the HD on which it is installed, because the other HDs are unknown to it, unless you use something like MacDrive to access your OSX partitions while in XP.
And since the energy-saving features of your Mac Pro used with OSX are mostly unknown to XP (due to lack of appropriate drivers) it is possible, that the fans are running more often and/or at higher speeds than they do in OSX.

  • What's the best configuration for a 300+ GB music library?

I'm about to buy an iMac. I want iTunes to run seamlessly. Assuming I purchase the 20" what else should I include? 2 or 2.4 GHz? 1 or 2 GB of Ram? How much internal HD space? I am happy to consider purchasing external HD space. I will be using it mostly for word processing and some low-tech music/video editing. Thanks in advance.

Before I got my new iMac (20" 2.4 ghz) I had my music library, which is about 50 gigs stored on a LaCie external hard drive connected through FireWire 400 and had no problems. As for your other question your LaCie hard drive (like mine it seems, just checked system monitor) may only be capable of 400mb/sec. I'm not sure about their new hard drives but mine is a little more than a year old so this may be the case with yours as well.
Time machine is apple's system backup program.

  • What is the best configuration

I have an ASUS P6 with 12 GiG ram, also I am using a Raid Controller Card with battery backup, using 4 each 2TB 7200 rpm as raid 10 for my operating system Win 7 64bit ultimate, and also Drive D  Raid 5 using 4 each 2TB 7200 rpm for my storage
I am using Adobe Master Colection CS5.5  also using a nVidia 470 video card
My question is should I create a scratch Disk if so where on Drive C or Drive D  and should I use Drive C or Drive D for my (File.prproj)  to operate in
    Thank you for any help

Actually, RAID 10 is both mirroring and striping. As configured, you have a total of 8TB worth of drives configured to use 4TB (the remaining 4TB is just a mirror of the first 4TB). That setup only gives you the performance "advantage" of a two-disk RAID 0 but at the cost of four hard disks required for the mirroring. As configured, the OS and all of the programs you have installed combined are currently using less than 2 percent of the total usable disk space. But while that helps performance (however slightly), you're also leaving nearly the entire drive volume empty (and thus totally wasted). A typical system with the OS, pagefile and all of the Adobe Creative Suite CS5.x programs combined uses less than 100GB worth of hard disk space.
Besides, I do not recommend striping at all on the OS drive: Striping only helps sequential transfers. Unfortunately, striping also significantly increases the latency (or slows down access speed), making some programs perform slower than if they were run on just a single hard drive. Striping is fine on a temporary data storage drive - but not on an OS drive.
My disk setup recommendation, therefore, would be to break up the C: array in favor of a simple two-disk RAID 1 for the OS/programs drive, and either add the remaining two hard disks extracted from the RAID 10 to your RAID 5 or configure the two disks as separate single-disk volumes.

  • What is the best configuration with logic 7.1.1 and osx 10.4.4?

I have a dual 2.3 ghz and 1.5 gig ram, i have powercore element, uad -1, waves , pluggo, all NI. motu 828 mk2 with logic 7.1.1. Right now my buffer size is at 256 .
I am working on a track where cpu is at near 80%, which my dual g4 1ghz handle the same with the same track by the way , i got audio dropped, randomly, i though the buffer size was too low, then i put it at 512, it is 10 x times worst. anyone has an idea??
    thankx in advance!!

That's not normally a solution when you're running out of CPU power, but it's certainly worth trying.

  • I will be buying the new IMac 27 inch in December. Would like input on the best configuration for photographic and possibly video processing-dream machine!

I will be buying an IMac 27 inch in December. What is the best configuration for photo and possibly video processing.Does one need a Mac Pro? Dream machine!

Just to explain what I just wrote to Laundry Bleach:
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3673
    UPDATE & ADDENDUM:
But even though you can still buy iLife 11 that includes iDVD 7 from Amazon, Apple now make it difficult to install:
Poster jhb21939 posted this in another thread:
“when I attempted to load iDVD into a new iMac. A notice came up on the screen stating that the 'Authorisation Licence' had expired on 25 March this year (2012).
I contacted the Apple support team and eventually, I was told that the Licence had been withdrawn and could no longer be used.”
In other words Apple are now so adamant that we don’t use iDVD that they have tried to make it impossible to install.
In response, Old Toad posted this solution:
“You can still use it one all of your Macs.  If you get an invalid certificate message just set your Mac's clock to sometime before early 2011 and run the installer.  After you're done reset the time back to the correct time.” He added this comment:
“It began after iDVD and iWeb were discontued and they were dropped from the Apple Store. All I can think of is the certificate was set to expire after a certain time period after the intitial iLife disc was released.
I've been able to use the installer even without setting back the date.  I just clicked on the Continue button and it would work as expected.  For some it would not continue unless the date was set back.”
The latest anorexic iMacs just announced do not even include a CD drive! Proof positive that Apple virtually prohibit the use of DVDs - although the newly announced Mac Minis do include a Superdrive.
Yet, they still include iMovie! Heaven alone knows or understands what you are supposed to do with your newly edited masterpiece - except make a low quality version for YouTube?

  • What is the best RAID configuration for a MacPro as a Logic User?

There ought to be a universal answer to this question: what is the best RAID configuration for Logic Mac Pro users? I will be more specific.
I use Logic Studio, Reason, Ableton, and Motu Symphonic Instrument simultaneously.
I want to fail safe my precious audio files and improve performance as the system reads/writes data from multiple files, from audio tracks to digital samples.
I want to run video files simultaneously to do nifty audio soundtracking to video.
Here is the configuration I have in mind.
HD 1: OS and Logic Studio, Reason/Ableton samples etc. software (non-raid) (250 GB)
HD 2/3: MIrrored RAID set for AUDIO FILES (500 Gb identical pair)
HD 4: Video files / Bouncing (1 TB)
Makes sense right? A disk for reading software. A pair of 500 GB disks for reading/writing audio files and sessions in mirrored array. A 1 TB disk for video and bouncing. The main question I have is, for audio files only, is striped or mirrored better? 64K blocks the best? And are there any more details. I assume to do this in Disk Utility.

Well, both Mirrored and Striped have their pros and cons. If you use mirrored, it will offer no better performance than the spec'ed drive along with it's sata bus speed. The plus point is, if one drive goes down, you have the second as a backup as the complete contents of one drive are mirrored on the other.
With striped you will get a performance boost because all files (for example a single project) will get written across both drives and hence split the load on the drives and the SATA busses. The drawback is that you'll have to make sure you have a good, regular backup schedule in place because when one of the drives goes to drive heaven, you're going to be stuffed without a full backup of both drives.
Exactly what performance boost you'd get will depend on your project, number of files, size of files, fragmentation of files, track count etc. You may find it would be easier to use the 3 drives straight, with no raid and have:
HD 1: OS and Apps. No samples at all.
HD2: Audio Files for Logic projects
HD3: Reason, Ableton, Logic etc instrument sample library
    HD4: Video and bouncing.
Which is what I ended up doing although I use HD4 as an interchangeable backup for HD1 and 2.
There is no universal answer to this as each must make their own choice based on their preferences and needs. Mirrored will give you full backup but on-site, in machine backup. Not much good if something untoward and drastic happens to the physical machine. I think a few people toy with striped RAID but fall on the side of using the drives straight, as in their projects they don't see a big enough gain over splitting the data across your 3 remaining drives without RAID. Studios that seriously consider raid often go out and get a dedicated raid that can offer more variations than raid 0 or raid 1 (Striped and Mirrored) and better throughput.
I hope this helps a little and not just added to the dilemma.

  • What is the best way to configure my iPods and user accounts?

I'm looking for a little guidance. Here is my situation:
I am running the latest version of Tiger. It is currently configured with three accounts; mine is the admin. account and each of my two children have their own accounts.
My account is the one that is used most of the time. All of our calendars in iCal are maintained here including one for each of the kids. Each of the kids has their own Contacts list in the Address Book as well. I currently have a 5G 30GB iPod Video that I sync with iTunes through this account. Shortly, I will be buying an iPod Touch. I want my 30 GB iPod to be the one that has everything on it; it will be the one we take in the car on trips for music. I want the Touch to have some, but not necessarily all, of my music and all of our calendars and contact information. I am looking to use it to replace my Palm as my PDA.
My son has a 2G Nano which currently syncs through his account.
My daughter will be getting a 3G Nano soon.
I will also be upgrading to Leopard very soon.
Ultimately, I would like each of the kids to have their own iTunes libraries for music and podcasts and to sync their iCal calendars. As I understand it, however, they cannot access their calendars from their own accounts under my current arrangement. I also understand that there are several ways to configure my Mac to work with multiple iPods.
Given all of this, what is the best thing for me to do? Should I set up all of the kids' iPods to sync through the admin. account so they can get their calendars at the same time? Or is their some way for them to have access to their calendar information from their own accounts under Tiger (or Leopard)? And as far as my two iPods (the Video and the Touch), should they sync through separate libraries, or through one using playlists. I also want to minimize duplicate data wherever possible, be it music or records in iCal and the Address Book.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or advice!

  • What is the "best" way to configure iTunes on an iMac with personal user acounts so each user can access the media library but sync devices on their personal user account?

I am trying to determine the best way to set up our imac so each user account can access the same media (songs, movies etc.) through itunes and also back up and manage their personal devices under their own personal user account.  There are 4 users on our iMac.  Me, my wife, and our 2 children.  We have built an extensive library of music/media together using the same iTunes store account.  I would like to establish a seperate apple id and iTunes store account for each of us going forward but have the ability for each of us to share our purchases.  What is the best way to configure our system and devices in order to allow shared access to media and at the same time allow for individual management of devices including contacts, apps, photos, etc. Please help, I would like to do this once!
    Thank you in advance!

OK, seeing as no-one replied (presumably because a lot of this information is on the forums in bits elsewhere) here's how I've got on so far.
Applications - just went through them.  About the only one I needed was my media server app.  Just downloaded and re-installed, had a quick look back though my email to find the license key and it all went on fine.  Installation never seemed quite right on my old machine so solved that problem too.
Movies - New iMovies just copied across the clips and projects into their respective folders.  Seems to have worked but haven't checked it all that thoroughly.  Some duplicate footage here but I can trim this out at some point when I get a chance to go through here.
Documents - Just copied these across.
Photos - used an app called iPhoto Library Manager.  You can download for free but have to pay to use the part that consolidates your libraries.  Possibly if I was willing to spend a bit more time I could have got away without using this but given I didn't know the state of my different libraries and just how many duplicates I had this was too much of a convenience to ignore.  Also got my library into a state where I can now spend a few hours organising it a bit better with Faces / Events etc.
Not attempted Music or iPhone sync yet as been stuck trying to solve a problem with my power adapter.

Open the Get Info window for the old drive. Click the Lock icon on the bottom of that window and type in your password. In the permissions area click the Plus sign ( + ) and Add your Username to it and set it to Read & Write. Close that window. you should now have full access to all the files.
