4x6 crop function is cropping on the sides.

Why does the 4x6 crop function crop the sides as well as the top /bottom on a horizontal frame. Only the top and bottom need to be cropped to get a 4:3 digital image into a 4x6 space. How do I easily do this with many photos and not loose parts of the frame? I used to do it in Photoshop but forgot when I moved to a camera with a larger Megapixel photo file.

Looking in '11 it works just fine - and I believe that it the same in '09
You talk about only the top and bottom needing to be cropped - to crop a 3:4 photo to 4:6 you crop the sides - not necessarily the top and bottom - A good general step for strange issues is to renew the iPhoto preference file - quit iPhoto and go to "your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist and trash it - launch iPhoto which creates a fresh new default preference file and reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it. This may help
This does not affect your photos or any database information (keywords, faces, places, ratings, etc) in any way - they are stored in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto preference file simply controls how iPhoto works - which is why renewing it is a good first step.

  • I use the SCC mediaserver in my work, and the crop function has stopped working on Firefox, although it works on Internet Explorer, and I'm wondering if a recent upgrade caused that problem.

    I am a newspaper copy editor and use Firefox to work from home. I use the SCC mediaserver to crop photos and place them in the JazBox system, which includes Adobe InCopy and InDesign. For some reason, the crop function is not working on the SCC when I go on it in Firefox, although it's working in Internet Explorer, which is much slower. I didn't have this problem until I installed a Firefox update today. What can I do?

  • Does elements 10 have the perspective function in crop

    Hi I have a client who is an artist and she needs some image editing software but does not have the funds for photoshop.  She can purchase elements 10 quite cheaply but the most handy tool for her will be the perspective function in crop but I am not sure whether it is a feature of elements 10.  Thanks

    Once again, thanks Ken !
    I'll keep it, even though I have DxO which can give optimal results.
    That said, the filter 'Correct lens distortion' (already present in PSE6) is simple and efficient, plus it includes a zoom level to crop (bottom slider).
    Better than the 'Transform / perspective' adjustment I am used to.

  • How to avoid the canvas showing after crop/how to cut out background&side objects

    Hi
    Thanks in advance for any help!!!
    I've tried in vain for hours to work this out....I am shooting against a white background and I need to chop off the lights/other objects in the shot at the side of the video- how is this best achieved?!
    I've trimmed the video but then I'm left with a white or black canvas at the sides....and I can't work out to make the video fill the frame once I've trimmed!
    I'm using the white screen to avoid having the key all the videos (just bought the white screen after the green sreen had too many issues with staying inside the greenscreen and having to be so far forward to light the green screen enough - I'm shooting large products!)
    I'm new to FCP (I've got FCP X 10) so sorry if this is an obvious answer but I'm banging my head against the wall on this one!
    screenshots attached of what I'm talking about!
    even giving me the correct terms to google would really be appreciated!! ive tried everything i can think of!
    Thanks

    You have to fill it with something. How good are in Photoshop? Take a frame and airbrush and clone the "white" into the surrounding area. Place the Photoshop image on a layer underneath the crop video. Rather than crop it using the mask effect and feather it so it will blend better with the underlying graphic.

  • JAI crop function

    Hello All,
    I am using JAI crop function with starting pixels, width and height. But starting pixels is not working. It is cropping the image always begginning from left side (0,0) to the given (width,height). You can find my code below. I am waiting for your responses.
    private static byte[] bin;
    public void doGet(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse res)
                   throws IOException, ServletException {
         InputStream imageInputStream = new ByteArrayInputStream(bin);
              SeekableStream seekableImageStream = SeekableStream.wrapInputStream(imageInputStream, true);
              RenderedOp originalImage = JAI.create(JAI_STREAM_ACTION, seekableImageStream);
         ParameterBlock pb = getParameterBlockForImage(image);
    pb.add(x);
    pb.add(y);
    pb.add(width);
    pb.add(height);
    PlanarImage image = JAI.create("crop", pb);
         // save the image
              ByteArrayOutputStream stream = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
              JAI.create("encode", image, stream, "jpeg");
    bin = stream.toByteArray();
    OutputStream out = res.getOutputStream();
              res.setContentType("image/jpeg");
              out.write(bin, 0, bin.length);
              out.flush();
              out.close();
    Thanks in advance

    I don't think the crop function would arbitrarily ignore your (x,y). Are you sure your x and y are not 0? Prove to yourself that they're not by adding some System.out calls just before they get added to the parameter block.
    Also, I'm not familiar with the function getParameterBlockForImage(image)?

  • How can i use cropping  in imovie 11 on the clips that i cut away with and still put it in HD

    Hi there,
    I do have one problem dealing with the videos I make in my iMovie 11: I want to set my videos to HD using Quicktime. I already know how to do that. But, the problem is that I use cropping and ken burn effects on my vids when I use cutaway (a really major problem since I use this most frequently in my videos), picture-in-picture, and side-by-side. After I exported my vids to Quicktime, I wanted to look at them. But, for some reason when I was watching my iMovie videos on Quicktime, it included every little bit of my clips. It didn't crop the clips at all. It showed everything. I'm kind of upset about this because I have projects due this month and I really didn't want part of some clips to show. I really needed them cropped and/or ken-burned. Plus, I need to set them on HD.
    Whenever I played it back in the iMovie preview, my videos played exactly as I wanted it to play. The cutaway clips, picture-in-picture clips, and the side-by-side clips were cropped and ken-burned just as I wanted it to be. But, on my Quicktime, it didn't do the same.
    Here's the procedure that I use to export my videos:
    Step 1:  I finish making my video with the cutaway clips, picture-in-picture clips, and side-by-side clips already cropped and/or ken-burned.
    Step 2:  I click on "Share." Then, I click on "Export using Quicktime."
    Step 3:  I click on "Options."
    Step 4:  I click on "Settings." Then, I make sure the Compression Type is H.264, Frame Rate is Current fps, Key Frames is on Every 24 frames, Frame Reordering is checked, Compressor Quality is on Best, Encoding is on Best Quality (Multi-pass), and the Data Rate is on Automatic. After this is done, I click "OK."
    Step 5:  I click on "Size." I make sure the Dimensions is on 1920 x 1080 HD (mainly because I really need it in HD for doing projects for school and uploading other videos to Youtube, Dailymotion, and other sites). I also click on Preserve aspect ratio using: Letterbox. Then, I click "OK."
    Step 6:  After I set the settings for Sound, I make sure that Prepare for Internet Streaming is on Fast Start. Then, I press "OK."
    Step 7:  I save my file name and export to Quicktime.
    Step 8:  Once it already exports to Quicktime, I open the file and look at my video that I just made. (At this point, I realized that my videos that were used as cutaways, picture-in-pictures, and side-by-side clips didn't show the parts I cropped or ken-burned on. It practically showed every little part of that clip that I use those effects on. I really wanted it to be cropped or ken-burned as much as possible.)
    So, that's my problem that I have at the moment. I really needed it cropped and/or ken-burned and set the video on HD. I would really appreciate your thoughts on how I should fix this problem.

    On one of my clips it says:
    Format:  Apple Intermediate Codec, 1280 x 720, Millions
                 16-bit integer (Little Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
    Current Size: 1280 x 720 pixels (Actual)
    Another clip I use says:
    Format:  Apple Intermediate Codec, 960 x 540, Millions
                 16-bit integer (Little Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
    Current Size:  960 x 540 pixels (Actual)

  • Aspect Ratio 16:9 cropping off small amount of all sides on export...?

    I have a project, all data captured @ DV/NTSC 16:9 anamorphic SD. In DVD Studio Pro it looks correct.
    In Preferences, I have tried exporting 16:9, and 4:3 and either way, when played on any of my DVD players or screens, the apect ration doesn't show bars @ the top and bottom of the screen (the screen is set to 16:9) and a small amount of the top and bottom, and a bit more of the sides are cut off of the viewing image. I've gone round and round with different tests, and decided I need some help.
    Thanks -
    Joel

    Hi Steve -
    Thanks for the info. My TV is 16:9, and I didn't know about overscan. I just switched the 'Action Safe' setting, and sure enough, that is what I am seeing on my TV screen(s). So what now? How do I make everything fit the smaller size w/o cropping off the area? I'm almost there.
    Thanks SO much -
    Joel
    What you don't say is what kind of tv you are
    checking this on - is it a 4:3 set, a 16:9 set?
    Are you aware of a thing called overscan? TVs all
    display their pcitures with a slight overscan - this
    means that a small proportion of the picture
    disappears into the surround of the tv. Usually when
    you display the same DVD on a computer screen this
    doesn't occur. This may be where some of your
    confusion is arising. This is why you also have
    marked areas in DVD-SP called Title Safe and Action
    Safe. These show you where you can safely have action
    running and it not be cropped by the overscan and
    also shows where it is reasonable to place text to
    give enough "air" around it that it won't be cropped
    or too close to the edge of the screen.
    You also need to make sure (as Thomas points out)
    that the track that contains your 16:9 anamorphic
    movie is set up right - and that is encoding as 16:9
    Letterbox or Anamorphic.
    Thenyou also need to be sure that your DVD player is
    outputting a 16:9 letterbox signal also... Lots of
    place which are potential trip-ups

  • How do I completely crop a PDF so that the cropped data is removed and the file size is reduced?

    How do I completely crop a PDF so that the cropped data is removed and the total file size is reduced?
    When I use the "Crop" function, the cropped data still remains in the file and there is no reduction in file size. I need a way to truly crop a PDF using Acrobat software.

    When you export, try to get the full file path or else you will have to do a lot of manual searching.
    If you downloaded the picture from Messages, the picture is stored in your User Library/Messages. to make your User Library visible, hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/Library/Messages/Attachments.
    If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.

    You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.4. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

  • Problems with new crop functions and old crop actions

    I discovered that my actions imported from CS4, which contain preset dimensions for the crop window, do not function as written UNLESS the crop tool is activated before running the action. These actions are designed to open the crop window at a specific dimension, then stop, allowing me to move the crop window to the desired postion, then continue with the cropping and, finally, interpolation back to original image dimensions. However, in CS6, if you run these actions with any tool enabled OTHER THAN THE CROP TOOL, the crop window appears at the perimeter of the image. With the crop tool enabled, the actions function as written. Hopefully you can fix this before the final release.
    I'm running Win 7 Pro on 64 bit machine, and the above problem occurred running the 32 bit CS6.

    Patti,
    Here's a screen capture of the crop action. The action is designed to stop at the first step, allowing me to drag the crop box to wherever I want. The box normally appears roughly centered. However, in CS6, this only works if the crop tool is pre-selected before running the action. If any other tool is active, the crop box expands to the perimeter of the image.

  • Allow cropping boundaries to go outside the picture frame

    Currently, the crop window is restricted to be inside the picture window. When the picture is rotated, the crop window shrinks to prevent it from extending outside the picture frame. This functionality is most often preferred.
    However, for some situations, there should be an option to unlock this feature, allowing the crop to go outside the frame. Upon export, white space (or a color of selection) will be substituted for the are outside the picture. What I am asking for is the same functionality RawShooter has!!

    I want the feature, but implemented better than in RawShooter. Some photos would look best cropped a certain way but need a little sky or whatever cloned into a corner.
    A simple way for Lightroom to provide this is to have the crop box work just like it does now constrained to the images pixels, but by pressing and holding, say, the Alt/Opt key, the box would become unconstrained. Holding down the Ctrl/Cmd key could be used to rotate the crop box 90 degrees by clicking on one of the borders.
    In response to the nay-sayers, for many people (see, I'm not just speaking for myself) the idea of workflow is the "flow" part, not the "work" part. For me (and the many people) getting images cropped right is part of the flow. Jumping to Photoshop is an interruption. (Of course, for others the flow is completing each image as they go, but when I do that I am way too slow.)
    For the bloat-beware folks, the hard part is constraining the crop box to the pixels, not uncontraining it. BTW - Lightroom's handling of cropping and rotating is WAY better than RawShooter's.

  • Crop function - outline problem

    Hi!
    When using the "crop" function in Final Cut PRO 5.x (under the motion tab)
    I get an outline on the cropped video...why does that happen? It occurs on every clip. Ideas? Im editing regular dv footage.
    Sincerely,
    Tom - Norway

    I can't see any outline on any of your screenshots. Can you see the outline on the screenshots when viewing them on your 24-inch iMac? Could you please try once more to describe where the outline is? Is it supposed to be at the edge of the white on the big cropped image? I can't see any outline there on my MacBook Pro 17-inch screen or 20-inch Cinema Display.
    Do you have the same Color Profile in System Preferences on both iMac's?

    CS6 Camera Raw - I can now only crop using aspect ratio in the custom crop setting rather than being able to set the dims in cm and inches? anyone know how to revert? ever since installing new mac operating system things have been strange!

    Hi Kglad.
    I have looked at all of my settings both in Bridge and CS6 Photoshop regarding Camera Raw. I am at a loss how to set the crop tool in cm or inches as I once did - now the only option is to crop using ratios of 1:1 etc etc - This is infuriating as lots of my square crops I could set at 10" x 10'' specifically to print one to one to fit frame and mount size -
    Now if cropping using bloody aspect ratio of 1:1 (square) the actual dims of the crop are roughly 4.25 inches x 4.25 inches. this means I then have to open the whole image in photoshop in order to crop at the dims I have set! It was so much quicker in terms of batch cropping in camera raw being able to set dims in centimetres and inches but they have gone and mucked around with it, with the new bloody update! Unless you are an absolute genius and know how I can go back to having an option of CM, Inches and aspect ratio within the custom crop settings? (Please say you do)
    here is the new tutorial for CC -  my guess is they have scrapped the control we had over the custom crop settings

  • Unwanting Cropping function - CS3 Illustrator to pdf

    When saving an ai-file to pdf (CS3), the pdf-file is cropped to the documentsize. I can not see fx. colorelements larger than the documentformat, which can be needed when I do a job for printing (and cutting).
    CROP AREA is set to release in OBJECT. I did not have that problem whith CS2 - and I'm not going to upgrade to CS4 right now.
    PLEASE HELP

    You will have to make your document size larger.
    In other words, if you have an 8.5" x 11" page do this:
    Create your Trim Marks by using Filter > Create Crop Marks (Do not use the Object > Crop Area)
    THEN change your document larger by an inch, so that it's 9.5" x 12".
    Now, when you create your PDF it will have the trim marks and the bleed.
