5.0.1 update - battery issue - check usage/standby stats

There might be more than one problem but i did find mine and fix it. Check your usage and standby in general settings and if they are the same, then you have the same problem I had (they should not be the same). If they are the same, that means your phone is never going in standby mode. I fixed the problem with a complete reload. I did not choose to restore from backup because I wanted to be %100 sure it was a fresh load of the software, so I setup as a new iphone.
Background: I upgraded from v4 to v5.0.1 a few days ago and started having battery issues. I went to the apple store and they did some diag test on my phone/battery and said everything checks out good. They said my options were to buy a new battery or drain my existing batter to zero, let it set for two hours, then recharge to %100 again and see if it fixes my problem (it did not). The person at the apple store ask me if that sounded like a good plan, I said no, not really (does not make much sense), Im not buying a new battery, especially since you said mine checks out good, but i will try the recharge and see what happens. So, I was back to square one and then a friend told me about the usage/standy thing. Maybe this is a bug in the software when you do the upgrade (or at least for me) and v5.0.1 works fine from a fresh install. My phone battery is working great now. Looking at my usage stats now, I have 1 hour, 19 minutes usage and 3 hours, 17 minutes standby, and %90 battery.

Glad that a Restore as New resolved your issue...

• Does the 7.1 update battery issue affect only the 5s?

I have a 4s, bought in Oct '13, running IOS 7.0.4 with only one third-party app (Twitter).
The 7.1 update was pushed down to my phone earlier this month, but I haven't installed it yet because of the widespread battery drainage problems that came with it.
All the reports I've seen of 7.1-related battery issues have come from 5s owners. Would anyone know if this issue has been reported on the 4s?
TIA.

• Identical usage/standby stats

Hello. The usage and standby times are always identical to one
another. I believe this happened after an update to 4.3.1 but I'm
not sure. I normally drain my battery completely before charging,
allow battery to fully charge before disconnecting. I've also put the
phone in airplane mode and let sit for 10 minutes or so, yet the usage
and standby times are still identical.
I'm using a 16gb iPhone 4 with iOS 4.3.2 and I wondered if any other
users are experiencing this issue. I still get around 1 day 7 hrs of
usage/standby, I'm just kind of curious as to what may be causing
this.
Any help or tips would be appreciated, thanks

That's just exactly what I've noticed with location services, though.
I keep them off unless needed. But as soon as an app asks to use my current location, bang, the usage starts to climb - even with location services turned off.
Strangely enough, it doesn't affect the battery life much, as far as I can tell. But usage climbs constantly until I do a hard reset. Then it behaves itself again.
I posted about this a couple of days ago to see if anyone else had noticed, but there weren't any responses. There had been speculation that it might be push that was causing the constant usage climb, but I didn't buy that. On my phone it's definitely location services.

• Iphone 4, empty battery after 8h, usage==standby time

Hi,
since some weeks I have the problem, that my iphone sometimes gets into a state, where the battery lasts only about 8h from full charge. I can see, that standby time equals usage time.
Restarting the device does not help, updating to the latest i-os revision also did not help.
Searching the internet I found several people having the same problem but no solution. (Even here in the forum)
Looking into the console via X-Code Device Organizer, I can see that it tries to sync with our exchange server, even though there is no vpn connection open:

Hi, I think you need a new battery for your iPhone 4. Though you've said that the last time it is shut down with 90% of battery, there must be something wrong with your battery. You can buy a battery to replace the old one by yourself or take it to a local repair store to do the repair.

• When do usage/standby hours get erased?

Do usage/standby stats get erased anytime you reset the iphone (holding sleep and home buttons until apple logo appears)?
Or does it get erased only if an app crashes and automatically reboots the phone? This is what I think happened to me last night.

unfortunayrly a hard reset will erase to usag and standby times - they wont stat accumulating again till the next full charge

• Incorrect Daily Usage (Battery issue?)

Hi all,
As an update to the discussions about batteries, first the brief background: I have been a long-time PDA user, and am used to poor battery life. My iPhone 2G, under moderate use, would last about 2 days. Heavy use 1 day. I expected the 3G to get as bad as 1/2 that.
Yesterday I used the phone for my drive in, then holstered it at the office, taking it out to update my calendar 2x. By 4pm my battery was dead.
I had reset the usage statistics, and discovered that the iPhone reported 1 hour talk time (correct) and nearly 4 hours of "Use" (only use should have been the talk time plus the 5 minutes of calendar updates), and 7 hours of standby.
It seems to me that this battery life issue (at least in my case) is more likely a software (process running that should not) rather than hardware (damaged battery/evil Apple) problem. However, I have no clue what could be running.
I ran a full restore last night (reset all settings manually -- did not restore from my backup), and shut off location services. We'll see if it helps, and if the usage stats are now correct. In the meantime, if anyone else has any ideas as to the problem, they would be appreciated.

I found this solution:
1. Delete all email accounts
2. Select "Reset Network Settings" from Settings -> General -> Reset
3. Select "Reset All Settings" from Settings -> General -> Reset
Yes you are obviously going to lose your email setups and network settings - you will NOT lose the Photos, Calendar, or iPod songs. If you select "Erase All Content and Settings" you will lose everything - be careful.
After the phone reboots - setup your email accounts and input your network settings.
I was told by a Genius at the Apple store that if you leave "Enable 3g" on, Location Services On, Fetch New Data to Push, it's going to use up the battery quickly.
As of yesterday morning, I have 3G On and Location Services On, and at the time of this post the battery is only down about 1/4. I have not turn on Fetch New Data - In my case I have no reason to have my phone set to on.
I am not a heavy user of the phone, but before I did the above, my battery was lasting 3 - 4 hours when I was not using the phone.
This also corrected the Daily Usage issue.
Hopefully, this will help someone out there!

• IPhone 4S update to iOS 5.1 singal and battery issues

Hi,
I was on 5.0.1 and had no issues at all loved the phone and my battery life. Eversince I updated to 5.1 my phone signal is awful, 2 bars when I had 5 before, constantly floating, calls drop for no reason. Yesterday nobody was able to reach me until I restarted my phone. Switched phone on in the morning yesterday and I get no service for around 30 minutes, after restarting 3 times it finally found network.
On o2 got my iphone from Apple unlocked.
As to battery life I can loose around 10-20 % in 2-3 hours not doing anything just in stand by, my battery issues were solved with 5.0.1 but started again with 5.1
What is apple doing? it is to say the least frustrating as ****. Fix one thing then break another, or break 2 while fixing them. It ****** me off.
I tried to restore my phone 7 times already set up as new and still no improvement.
One more interesting issue is when you go to your purchases in App store, and click dowload and app dissapears and then reappears on home screen few minutes later once it is done downloading.
Anyone else with this kind of a issue?

Honestly guys,
It is either apple is blinded by their immense success which will not last if they keep going the direction they going. They should have more time to test their products thouroughly before they put their production line on overdrive. Company this size ignoring issues like that.
I think new Ipad will have problems as well, it seems this line up 4S and new ipad is kind of transition point to a newer devices and were made just to get something out on the market. Using same CPUs same formfactor.
My problem is I payed a fortune for it and it doesnt perform, I dont pay 600 pounds for a phone because I want to have issues with it. What they are doing is plainly ignoring these problems. Battery issue been going on since the release of the phone, going to be a year soon.
Microsoft and Apple changing places, look like microsoft going the right direction now with Widnows 8 and mobiles where as apple comes up with something like Lion which I hated and now Mountain Lion which plainly is running out of ideas and starting to implement some features from iOS, these are completely different devices. They do not need to be the same, they werent created for the same purprose.
I was on apples side all along but they are blinded by their pride in leading this revolution that they choose to ignore these issues. Relying on peoples stupidity to show off things like ipad 3 is 4x faster than tegra 3 where as in real results it came out 15% faster.
Apple get his fixed before it is too late. Scared to buy your products now!!! Good thing I didnt get iPad looking at overheating issues it is having, and also not charging from cable while in use but draining battery. No thanks

• A new iOS update and another new battery issue on the iPhone 5

Has anyone else contacted Apple support and been given te same old "solutions" on the battery issues?
1) Turn off location services.
2) Turn off background app updates.
3) Restore as a new device.
These solutions turn a smartphone into a dumb-phone. I love my iPhone but with every new iOS update, the battery becomes incredibly unreliable. Has anyone found a solution that does not kill the iPhone's functionality?

You can try a soft-reset of pressing and holding both the home and sleep buttons for 10 to 15 seconds so that it reboots, but you are likely to get the same screen. If it does then it will need to be connected to a computer's iTunes so that it can be reset back to factory defaults - do you have a friend with a computer with iTunes installed on it, or is there an Apple store nearby that you could try going to (if there is then preferably make a Genius Bar appointment at it, or don't go at a busy time) ?
Has she been backing up to the cloud ? If she has then she should be able to restore to that. If not then what she can redownload for free from the stores will show in the Purchased tabs in the store apps.

• I notice a lot of you started having battery issues after updating to iOS 6....

I'm not saying this could be the reason but I'm about 98% sure it has something to do with it. I have an iPhone 4S and when I first got it, I remember the display was very very bright... i would set it on low and it was still pretty bright. Battery consumption was horrible, I could literally sit there stare at the screen and see the battery percentage drop. Then when some kind of update was released about a month later iOS 4.XX something along the lines... that suppose to fix the issue. I updated my phone and it was fixed. However, it was fixed because my phone got more dimmed.. i could max out the brightness and it was still no where near the brightness of before. And this cause my battery life to be better. However after I updated to iOS 6 the brightness came back, and my battery is rapidly decreasing like it did before. So i'm guessing this had something to do with the battery issues. I'm hope this will help you all. to make your battery last longer, dim your phone, better for your eyes too

I, on the other hand, had no brightness issues on the 4S after upgrading to iOS 6, and no change in (good) battery life. If could be something else, an app or background process that is less efficient with iOS 6? Could be anything.

• After my latest update my music wont load on ipad i just get a blank grey screen and no music titles yet when i check usage it says music is there, ive tried unsync it then redoing and still nothing

after my latest update my music wont load on ipad i just get a blank grey screen and no music titles yet when i check usage it says music is there, ive tried unsync it then redoing and still nothing

Rebooting will not make you lose any content. Rebooting is when you hold the home button and the sleep button down at the same time until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
You can these suggestions. One might work for you.
Make sure that you do not have a stalled download in iTunes - a song or podcast .... if you have a download in there that did not finish, complete that one first. Only one thing can download at a time on the iPad so that could be what is causing the problem.
If that doesn't work - sign out of your account, restart the iPad and then sign in again.
Settings>Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go back to Settings>Store>Sign in and then try to update again. Tap one waiting icon only if necessary to start the download stream.

• Iphone4s - iMessage, Call & battery issues

I cannont receive text or picture messages via imesssage every once in a while, it never appears to be an issue when i receive from OTHER phones on other networks. I am able to send the messages though. and this issue is not consistent. it happens every now and then.
While i was testing this, i also noticed that when i send an iMessage the receiver is seeing my email Id instead of my phone number. I donno how frequent it is, but i noticed it once.
also, whenever someone calls me i get the call very late, i.e. just when the caller is about to reach my voicemail or disconnect. I have tested this by dialing my phone from a number of other phone including iPhone 4 & 4S from At&t
coming to the battery issues, i ALWAYS have my time zone off(i put my clock 10 min ahead), so i dont see the issue others are facing. But once in a a while i can see the battery dropping from 80% to dead within an hour or two without any usage. I got my iPhone 4s on day 1 and this happened about 4-5 times till now. Everytime i saw this happening, i would terminate all the background apps but that dosent stop the battery from draining.
I went to the apple store yesterday to have it diagnosed and they sent me away telling that I need to make an appointment.
Is anyone else facing the same issues?
Please share the solution if anyone was able to get around these issues.

Hi,
I had battery issues with my iphone5 ever since I updated to the latest IOS. My battery was draining really fast and my phone was really warm. What I did to solve this problem was: Go into Settings>Mail>Fetch New Data>Push, and make sure you switch push off. In that same section make sure that fetch is set as manually. This means that you have to check your emails when you want to - instead of the notifications going off every minute draining your battery.
I hope this helps anyone with the same issue.

• Advice for ppl that have Battery Issues

Hi everyone,
I been using my Lumia 800 since December and recenty updated it to the latest firmware version.
I charge my Lumia via USB every night and it lasts me for a good 13+ hours with lite/medium usage. Usage such as checking Facebook/Twitter updates, Fuse for RSS feeds, Outlook/personal e-mails, messaging, playing and download music and light gaming about 15 minutes.
I usually leave my Wifi turned Of. Only in places I turn it on are at Wifi hotspots which I have passwords to.
After recieving the latest firmware I hard resetted my phone and started from scratch no complaints. If you having battery issues after the firmware update this is what I recommend
1. Perform a hard reset on your phone
2. Charge the phone to max using USB. I heard the faster the phone charges the faster the battery will die so I charge my phone nice and slow via USB every night
3. Run the basic applications and see how long your battery lasts you for. So run your phone with the stock apps for a day and see how good it lasts you and then slowly start adding apps. Maybe theres an app in the background messing up your battery life etc
Give this a try and see if it improves your day to day experience I can go through a day with ligjht/medium usage but usually I charge it at night. From what I understand this update focuses on Idle time so as long as your phone is in idle it shouldn't eat alot of battery.
Let me know what you guys think and if this helped you guys with your battery problems. If you guys have any questions you can hit me up on twitter @based_graham
Regards,
G

you could choose to back it up if you want. The important thing is that you do not restore after u formated your iPhone to your backups.
Go here for learning how to disable iTunes backup:
http://iphonefreakz.com/2008/07/27/windows-users-disable-itunes-backup-for-faste r-sync/
for now u can choose to cancel (x) backup. sync your photos and videos and contact info and etc.
one more point, you must reset to erase all data and content. restore alone will not fully erase your phone.

• Genius Bar Feedback on Battery Issues

Ok..so I know there are hundreds of posts regarding various battery issues. I thought it might be helpful to post feedback on my genius bar visit today regarding my battery.
The issue with my battery is that the meter seems to be stuck at about 80% full, regardless of how much I use the iPhone or how long I charge it. I have no accurate way of knowing how much battery life I have left. I have even played 6+ hours of straight video to drain the batter and the meter never moves.
Fortunately, my lightning bolt icon (upper right corner) does eventually change to an a/c plug which tells me that the battery is fully charged even though the big green battery is always at 80%.
So the guy at the genius bar tried and inquired about all the usual tricks already discussed in this forum (restore, plug AC adapter to wall instead of USB, turn off wifi, bluetooth, etc). and concluded that it's most likely a software issue.
He did say however that the the usage statistics frequently mentioned here are controlled by AT&T and that it's functionality depends on AT&T sending some sort of over-the-air signal. Don't know if I buy that.
So, in a nutshell, they did not offer to replace the phone (not that they had any in stock anyway), but instead made a notation of the problem using my serial number and told me to wait for an Apple software update, which will most likely correct the problem. If it doesn't, then they can assume a hardware conflict and issue an replacement.
I know this is getting long, but I would like to add that my battery life itself seems fine. I just never know what I have left by looking at any of the two meters.
G5 Duo-Core Mac OS X (10.4.10)

My original iPhone had poor battery performance and would not reset the usage stats. There is no Apple Store near me, so Apple support sent a service phone and I sent mine in. The service phone has good battery performance and correctly reset the stats. I was notified that the original phone could not be repaired and a new replacement was sent to me. The new iPhone has great battery performance, but no matter what I try, the usage stats won't reset. Today I was told by Apple support that they believe this is a software issue and a revision would be developed to address the problem. There is no forecast availability date. It doesn't make any sense that a signal from AT&T would have anything to do with the battery stats. The service phone charged and reset the stats before I swapped my SIM into it.

• A suggestion for those with battery issues:

When I first got my iPhone, I had the same battery issues many people here are talking about, in fact I posted about it myself. Its fixed. Very fixed, and Im very happy with my battery life. Here is what I did.
First, do not charge it using your USB connection. At least not always. Why? I dont know. I did the first few days, and couldnt get a full charge even tho system wasnt going to sleep. I started using the wall charger, and got longer battery life, but still not great. One night, I forwarded the phone to my home phone in case I got a call, and shut the phone down completely, and put it on charge. In the morning, I woke up to a 100% charged, fully glowing battery icon. The battery lasted all day with no issues. Every night after that, I just charged it on the wall charger, but did NOT shut it down to see what happened. I am still waking up every morning to a 100% fully charged battery. The battery life seems to get better daily now.
Today, I ran wifi for about 5 hours because I forgot to shut it off. This was after going to the pool and listening to the iPod on the phone for about 2 hours. And using the phone normally throughout the day, checking mail, sms, etc. Really a full day of work, and my battery is still over 50% full. I purposely didnt connect it to anything during the day for a recharge, not the USB or wall charger.
Good luck, hope this helps. Id be interested to know if it does.

Here's my non-scientific experiment.
After surprising battery drain for the first 10 days or so with not much usage, I completely drained the battery yesterday until the phone shut off.
I plugged into AC charge and was worried when it didn't seem to even begin charging.
I plugged into USB, assuming it needed to charge enough to at least complete a sync.
I left it on USB until about 5-10% charge, then switched it to AC. At about 50% I needed to use it, so I did but sparingly, and put it back on charge, all the while keeping Mail on manual and WiFi off.
I took it off once more to get it home from the office, then plugged into AC.
I left that charging overnight.
I never actually got the "glow", but did get the plug icon showing full charge in the status bar.
After about 2 1/2 hours this morning, the status has not moved off of 100% (but with little usage as before).
This is definitely an improvement already though. Hope this helps.
