5.0.4 -- Multiclip Markers Disappearing

Hello, just spent an hour placing markers in a multiclip and when I changed the camera angle they all disappeared.
I'm editing an HD feature and thought I'd try the multiclip thing with the 3 camera car mount scenes.
I read that this was supposedly fixed in 5.0.3, but it's back again??
What was the solution here? Trashing prefs and restarting didn't do it.
Thanks!

you need to make sure that the viewer window, the playhead sync menu is set to open.
doing this allows the timeline playhead, viewer playhead, and canvas playhead to be synced together as one. allowing you to switch from angle to angle making marks and making cuts in a multiclip.
also make sure that you are actually cutting, that will show the markers, switching wont.

  • Multiclip markers disappear

The release notes for 5.0.3 mention a bug like this, but I am running 5.0.3 and the problem persists--
I've created a multiclip from 2 DV clips, then proceeded to make a series of markers in the multiclip. When I later open the multiclip in the viewer, the markers are visible both in the viewer and in the browser. When I do about anything with the multiclip in the viewer (namely select one of the 2 clips by clicking on its image in the viewer), all of the markers disappear both from the viewer and the browser. Anyone else experiencing this problem in 5.0.3?

    Welcome to the forum kid!
Maybe a workaround would be to add the markers to the original clips THEN make the multiclip out of those markered clips?

  • A BUG in FCP 7: Multiclip Markers slip when copied from project to project

Alas, not all things are great with multiclip markers in FCP 7.
We are shooting multicam on a show with dual system sound. Individual camera angles are synced to the production sound (broadcast .wav) and merged to create new master clips that use the stereo production audio instead of the original camera audio, then the new synced/merged clips are made into multiclips using In points set on the slate claps as the multiclip synchronization method. Markers added to the A angle and B angle do indeed stay attached when added in the viewer (thanks for that bug fix, Apple). The assistants are marking the beginning of each take and all resets on each angle, so that both Angle 1 (A camera) and Angle 2 (B camera) have the exact same markers on the exact same frames.
Problem is, when the editor opens the dailies project and copies the bins with the marked multiclips into his editor project, or his or her version of the dailies project is updated, the markers on Angle 2 (B camera) all shift in time (like they were all slipped). All Angle 2 markers in each individual clip slip the same amount, but every multiclip's markers slip a different amount. Copying clips from one bin to another IN THE SAME PROJECT yields the same slippage, and what's more, even messes up the markers in the original master multiclips (as if the copies were not affiliates but literally the same master clip as the multiclips). To make matters even worse, sometimes it's the A camera (Angle 1) that has markers slipping.
This bug does not affect multiclips that are made from the clips using original camera audio. Since the production has, thus far, been unable to properly jam sync the audio and camera timecode, each merged audio multiclip can have, potentially, three different timecode numbers associated with each track, Angle 1, Angle 2 and the stereo audio. Clearly FCP has no idea what to do when it attempts to recreate the clips in another bin or project, but the offset (i.e. how much the markers slip) is not directly correlated to any timecode offset between the different tracks of the multiclip. How weird is that?
It's forcing the editors to mark their own footage, which is really the assistant's job. At least in FCP 6 you could mark the original angles prior to multiclipping and the markers would stay as you switched angles, or you could mark the original angles and then replace the angle in the multiclip with the marked angle and, again, the markers would stay affixed to the angle when you switched from angle to angle. Now that doesn't even work.
    Help!
    Any workaround out there?

Actually the 4:2:2 smoother is for prepping footage in a 4:2:2 color space for chroma keying (it prevents stairstepping due to the blocky chroma values). It is the right setting for DVCPRO HD.
Sure about that? because it already is in a 4:2:2 color space, and there are no stair steps. Only DV has those ugly stair steps. I believe this is for DV. I have never used it, and I have comped a lot of DVCPRO HD.
am using the Chroma Keyer filter from FCP (possibly derived from Primatte?
Nope...Primatte is a NEW filter in FCP 7. The built in Chroma Keyer in FCP downright *****. I use DV Matte Pro for simple stuff in FCP, and Primatte or Keylight for the more complex ones, and in AE or Motion. But Primatte is now in FCP 7...well, a "lite" version called Primatte RT.
If chroma smoothing is causing that issue...don't use it.

  • Markers disappearing on merged clips fix?

In Premiere Pro CC when I create markers on merged clips they disappear when I move to a new clip.  Is this a bug that is going to be fixed in an upcoming update?
I began using Prelude to add markers and it's working very well.  Once a marker is created in Prelude it appears in the merged clip. So far I've had great luck with it but it would be nice to have the option to do it right in Premiere.
    -Tim

It's a bug on Premiere Pro. In the meantime, we've figured out a pretty good workaround that allows you to retain all your markers and lets you work with the new file like a clip (and not a sequence).
Say you want to merge 1 video and several audio tracks from a recorder. Instead of making a merged clip,  select your video clip and a RANDOM 2nd video clip (which we will be deleting). Right clip and select multi camera source sequence.  Now right click on the newly made multiclip and select open in timeline. this allows you to edit our new multiclip. Go ahead and delete that 2nd random video clip. Next, drop in your audio tracks. Then, toggle on or off the audio channels you want. (maybe you want to mute your camera masters). Last, close up the multiclip sequence. You are now ready to mark away.
One last bonus; if you have sunk improperly, you can open the multi-clip back up and adjust the audio to fit.

  • Multiclip angles disappearing

Hi I am running FCP 5.1 and I'm using multiclips either 3 or 4 angles.
I am experiencng at time the information for the multiclip disappears and only one angle takes over as a default.
Also I ma having different angles drop off and become black and unusable in the multiclip window.
Any help will be gladly appreciated!

Many thanks for that .. it seems obvious now you've told me!!

  • Why are my markers disappearing?

Marking clips in Premiere. The clips aren't linked/nested/grouped etc. Just regular old clips in the timeline. I save and close the project. Upon reopening, the markers are gone. On *one* of the autosave files I can get the markers to appear for a moment upon loading the project, but they quickly disappear. Anyone experience anything like this?

    Hi All.
Figured it out. Wanted to come back and post my solution b/c 1. No one does that. Ever. 2. It's a terrible feeling to Google your problem and come up with a half-dozen unanswered threads about missing markers or w/e it is you're troubleshooting.
I noticed on an autosave that upon opening the project the markers would appear *for a moment* and then disappear (presumably after linking to the source file). I knew they were there in the project before being linked. I have the source media on an external hard drive, so I unmounted the drive and opened the project with all media offline (to keep the project from linking the files and clearing my markers). Went to Premiere Pro > Preferences > Media and checked the box labeled "Write XMP ID to Files on Import". Relinking now - markers intact.

  • Markers disappearing

Why are my markers on my timeline disappearing after I relink media in CS6. This is really frustrating.

Chapter Markers should be located at the BEGINNING of a chapter - not at the end. If you want the last chapter to have a specific "End Jump," set that for the Chapter Marker at the beginning of that chapter.

  • Multiclip angle disappears when I click on the file

I've created a multiclip of two video angles and one sound source. When I click on the clip in the event browser, the angles show up properly in the angle viewer. But when I clip on the display at the top of the event browser, only one video angle shows up.
And when move the clip to the storyline for editing, it's also missing.
This is driving me crazy! I've already trashed the prefs. This has never happened before.
-- all clips play fine separately.
    -- all clips sync properly
-- same video clip disappears each time.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    /john

    Good question:
Here's a screen grab of that angle sitting in the timeline by its lonesome. It just doesn't like to be part of a multiclip and I can't figure out why.

  • Using Learn About FireFox and the 'Markers' disappeared never to return?

Downloaded and installed FF4 for Mac
Elected to ‘Learn about FireFox’, the browser complete with the Markers and dotted track/order to access line was displayed.
Hit the first Marker and the relevant info window displayed.
Hit the next Marker and then was distracted by another link and hit that.
Returning (back button probably) to the learning session found all the Markers had disappeared.
Tried various things to get the Markers to reappear but no luck so far.
I did not restart FF4 but surely this should not be necessary?
I will do this now but think this needs attention.
    Cheers, NSN
EDIT: From the links obtained via a Google, I followed the most prominent to Mozilla.com and the info lead me to believe I was downloading FF4. I see this is not so!

Unfortunately I tried that and it didn't work. Thanks for the help though. I tried to uninstall and it said I couldn't because the file is corrupt or something, but I think I finally got it uninstalled and/or deleted or whatever, but now I try to reinstall/download it again from the beginning and I can't. No matter what I do I can not get Firefox working again. No matter how many times I try to redownload it. Any other suggestions?

  • Newbie question: why did my markers disappear?

I just started using FCE (yesterday)! I used iMovie previously but was not happy with iMovie 08 and switched to FCE. I just spent some time adding markers to a clip, each with a chapter. But when I look at the clip in the browser the markers are not there. Do I have to do something special to save all of the markers? Did I inadvertently close the viewer window incorrectly. I added markers to another clip and they show up in the Browser window. I'm not sure what I did differently.

If you add markers to a clip that's in the timeline the markers will not be on the clip in the browser. The clip in the timeline is an affiliate copy of the master in the browser. If you apply the markers to the clip in the browser, they will not be on a clip that's already in the timeline. They will be on any subsequent copy of the clip you add to the timeline.
Chapter markers are not added to clips. Chapter markers must be attached to the timeline ruler for them to export with the sequence.

  • Placement "At Unnumbered Markers" disappeared

I wanted to make a slideshow to synchronize to the music. But I don't know whether my method is right or not.
I did that by inserting some unnumbered markers according to the beat of the music. Then imported some photo files and wanted to automate them to the unnumbered markers. But in the "placement" of the Automate to Sequence dialogue box, there was only the "Sequentially" option and no "At Unnumbered Markers" option for me to choose.
Am I missing something ? Please help.
    Thanks in advance.
    Best Regards
    jusko

    Jusko,
I agree, it is definitely a bug, I just hope to not stumble on revealing it again. Meanwhile, I got an email from tech support:
"I understand that the #at numbered markers# option is not available when using the #automate to sequence# feature.
I see that by creating a new user account, that you have resolved this
issue. That#s great news. Often times problems in software is the result
of corrupted permissions on a user account. I recommend that you
continue to work under the new account."
I like your idea better. I'd rather delete a file than create a new user ID every time I run into this problem. Meanwhile, I've copied my latest good config file so I can fall back on it after deleting the corrupted one.
As an aside, here's the path to the config file on my PC:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\Sid\Desktop\Adobe CS3\Adobe Premiere Pro CS3".
Thanks again for all your help!

  • Multiclip editing not cutting, Markers dissappear when stop playing

Im doing a multiclip edit for the first time and im having issues!
I have the 3 angles i need set up and sync in a multiclip and can get it playing fine ie viewer has the 3 angles playing at once and select angle is showing in the canvas. I play the clip and begin to add cut points (by clicking on angle when i want to change to it) a marker appears in the timeline as it should but when i stop playing all the markers disappear and im back to square-one again!!!!
As far as i can tell the setting are correct, i have the viewer set to open and multiclip playback enabled and all looks great it just wont insert the cut points!!!
    PLEASE HELP!

I'm no longer using 5.x, but I remember some odd bug with multiclips doing only a Switch to (instead of a Cut to) which results in the behavior you're mentioning: the markers disappearing as soon as you stop playback. I believe the issue was either related to being in a customized, but unsaved custom keyboard layout.
I guess what I'm saying is: does going to Tools > Keyboard Layout and selecting either layout (Default or Multiclip) affect the issue?

  • Bug or Design Flaw?: Multiclip

I'll put headings on this posting because it's gonna be long and you may want to skip parts.
    *Executive Summary*
Multiclips do not retain modifications. So far I've tried adding markers and adjusting levels to a multiclip in the Viewer and after switching angles and switching back, the markers disappear, the levels revert to default.
    *What I'm Attempting*
I've got hours of two-camera interviews. Cam A is subject, Cam B is host. Clips are several questions/minutes long. I spent a day and a half syncing and multiclipping and then was ready to screen and pull selects. Or so I thought.
_Approach 1._ My thinking was the most logical workflow would be to watch the interviews then subclip bits I like. We have neither time nor budget for transcripts nor the man-hours to read and highlight them. And even if we did, I'd still need to isolate those parts.
It turns out +you can't subclip multiclips+. Modify>Make Sublcip is grayed out and if you try to subclip by extending a marker and then making a subclip from that you get a new clip with a length identical to the original full clip, but with the name of the marker appended to the head of its original name and the original clip also now has this modified name and there seems to be no way of changing that name back.
    Still with me?
_Approach 2_. OK, so I'll put markers where I find a sound bite I like, name them by subject matter and then, at least, I'll be able to find my selects in my Interviews bin by turning down the disclosure triangles next to the relevant clips. Not as good a solution, but it's what I've got.
    Not.
+Multiclips do not retain modifications.+ Put a multiclip in your viewer, apply a marker (or adjust audio level), play, switch angles, play, switch back. Your marker (or level adjustment) is gone. They're just gone.
    *Corporate Response*
I got on with Apple Care Enterprise. My tech guy reproduced my problem exactly. He then put me on hold and went to an upper level tech. When he came back he told me that's the way it's supposed to work. Multiclips have a sync relationship established by the mere fact that they are multiclips so markers are superfluous. I told him I thought markers served several purposes and he started to get a little testy with me. I laughed a little (not derisively, I swear), said thanks and he hung up without even saying goodbye. I was hurt.
    *Why I Care*
I've got hours of these two-camera interviews and no script. I need to find what I like before I can build it into a show. I need to have access to both cameras as I screen because I can't hear the host on the subject's mic nor vice versa.
    *Less Than Satisfying Workaround*
Here's the best I've got so far. I make a sequence out of each multiclipped interview, I then mark in and out points when I find a bit I like and I make a sublclip (sub-sequence, really) of it. Let's say I make a 10 second sub-sequence of a soundbite I like. When I'm ready to work with it I drag it to the Viewer and I have a fullscreen image of either the host or the subject. I'm now into the cutting and I know precisely which part of this subclip I want. I mark an in and an out, I cut it into my show, I'm good. And if I want the host and the subject is showing in the Viewer I simply hit SHIFT 1 or SHIFT 2 to get the other angle.
Here's the downside of this process (besides the extra steps). If I do choose to switch angles in the Viewer, the Viewer reverts to a copy of the original full-length multiclip with a Media Limit set at the In point. If, now that I'm cutting, I find I want to include the host's question with this response I can't without another workaround.
How many workarounds does it take to screw in a light bulb?
*If You've Made it This Far and Have a Better Solution I Would Be So Grateful*
And don't think I'm just looking for problems; this is going to be a huge issue for me on this project.
    Rant
More and more often I'm finding FCP simply isn't designed for long-form editing, especially long-form documentary where organization, searchability, flexibility and general versatility are essential... No, at best, I've only got one person still with me. No sense in ticking you off too.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to raise such ire. Let me respond briefly in turn.
Zebulun wrote, "How would you go about this if you were in a linear suite with tape machines and a switcher? Lotsa logging."
I didn't come from tape editing, but rather film editing where you could pull selects. Then for most of the past 15 years I've been cutting on Avid products that work in the manner to which I've become accustomed. I could group then subclip or add locators (markers in FCP) that would not disappear. I've come to realize in FCP I have to change (not lower, simply change) my expectations and my post was in pursuit of direction.
"...who said editing was easy?" Certainly not me, but any editor worth his or her salt finds ways to eliminate pointless impediments.
+Patrick Sheffield+, your posting was very helpful and the link to your other posting was so good I've already passed it on. I will say that a long stringout of preferred soundbites, while I may resort to it, is hardly as manageable (for me, for me, we all have our own approach) as a nice bin where every subclip is named by its particular subject. Still that may well be the way I go.
+David Bogle+: "It's not even a design flaw. But you knew that..." Well then why does it allow me to apply markers and change audio levels if it isn't going to maintain those modifications? I hate to believe after two feature-length and several shorter projects on FCP I still don't understand its fundamentals to such a degree. But perhaps I don't.
" You say you don't have time or money to do this properly so you appear to be attempting to blame the software product you have chosen as your editing platform."
Who said there's one proper way? Jeez. I came on to this project as editor and post-producer after a lot of key decisions were made and most of the money spent. I am trying to view the material for the first time and pull what appeals to me as I go. I've reread my original post and, with the possible exception of my rant it just didn't seem harsh enough for this sort of response; I was pointing out something that appeared to not be working or which I didn't understand and looking for a solution. Isn't that what this site is for?
"I decide what I need to tell the story and then I work on it. That is, I'd select the sound bites and then figure out how to edit the multiclips later"
Perhaps I wasn't clear. I can't tell what the host is saying while watching the subjects camera nor vice versa. And both sides remarks are important. I had no say over how they shot this show so I have to live with that. This show will be almost entirely a series of dialogues between the host and various other people. And it is part of my job on this project to find the interesting conversations and mold them in to something worthwhile. Yes, I can watch the host's camera until the subject speaks then load the subject's clip and listen to that until the host speaks again and then go back to his clip. I was hoping for something a little more elegant.
"...this is easily corrected by cutting and pasting the tracks together and merging the new clip's tracks or nesting and exporting."
Thanks David, this is what I will probably resort to. I am sorry if I offended you or anyone else who replied or merely read my original post. I have no desire to get into one of those 'FCP vs. Avid' dialogues that are so common on these sites. Avid is blowing their market share, my clients and prospective clients are moving to FCP and it is on me to learn to love this application. I am in no way out to alienate those who would guide me.
    Regretfully,
    Martin

  • Cross reference markers are deleted for content in text insets

Cross reference markers are deleted for content text insets. I currently have a chapter that is built from several Import by Reference files. I added an introductory paragraph with cross reference links to heading 2 titles in these text insets. Everything works and saves normally, although the cross reference markers disappear from the chapter when files are checked out a few days later. An extra Heading 2 is also added to the end of the document.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Create a chapter composed of several text insets.
    2. Create a list of cross references to headings in these text insets at the beginning of the chapter.
    3. Check in/check out the files from a source control product.
    What went wrong?:
The cross reference markers are gone, resulting in broken cross references. An empty Heading 2 is also added to the end of the document following the final text inset
    What should have happened?:
The markers should remain and the heading 2 tag should not be applied to the document.
    Product version:
    Product: FrameMaker
    Version: 7.2
    Platform information:Windows XP
    Hardware: Dell Latitude D620
OS Version: Windows XP Professional Version 2002, Service Pack 3.
    RAM: 1GB

Thanks for the information, Van. We did try several techniques including adding the insertion point immediately after the text inset before the normal paragraph tag, but none seemed to consistently work. I will investigate this scenario futher, though, in light of your comments.
We have managed to determine a workaround for this issue by avoiding a string of text insets. For some reason, using multiple text insets without separating them with normal text causes most of the problems after we add the files to our source control system. The situaton is not ideal, but it does work for the time being anyway.

  • Keeping chapter markers after compressing

Why are my chapter markers disappearing after I compress a file. Example: start with a DV file with chapter makers created in FCP and the markers show up in the Quicktime player but when I compress them to H.264 with Compressor or any other type of program (included exporting them out of the Quicktime player) the markers are gone. I have seen many other H.264 movies on the web with the markers in them so I know that it can be done.
    Dual 2.7 G5/ Dual 2.0 G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   30" Apple Monitors, Final Cut Studio

Thanks for the tip, and I got it to work but here are a couple of things to clairify for others. To extract the chapter(s) info out of the movie you go to Window:Show movie properties, enable the Text Track(not called chapter track) and select only that track to Extract. A new movie is created, that just looks like a white bar with the chapter names in them, select all and copy. Then go to your compressed movie and Edit:Add to Selection & Scale.
Now the movie will not look right, to fix this: go to Window:Show movie properties, uncheck the enable button on the text track, in the "other settings" for the text track make sure "Chapters" is selected to "Text track", now go to "Visual Settings" and change the scaled size to match the width of you movie and make the height 20 pixels (320 x 20 for me) and all is well. If I enable the text track the name of the chapter markers appear in a white box at the top of the screen.
It sounds complicated but once you do it once or twice it's easy to do. Now if anyone knows of a better way???????
