5.0 Bundle 1168 Update

Question

Hiya, my current blackberry device software is v4.6.1.314
and my desktop manager is allowing me to update it.
I was just wondering that what would actually change if i do update it? and will i lose any of my data?
Can anyone help me?!

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
The differences between the 4.x and 5.x OS levels are quiet vast...impossible to really list well. But, you should check with your carrier to see if they released any kind of changelog (sadly, most don't). I can say from experience that the initial days of the shift are painful, but ultimately 5.x is far superior to 4.x...you just have to get used to the fact that things are in different places and some functions may have changed completely.
As for your data, with this level of an update, what actually happens is that your BB is wiped out completely...all data and additional apps. Then, the new OS is loaded and, if you've not overridden it, the data is restored from the automatic data backup that was taken. But, I always advise a manual backup first:

If something in the automated backup/restore process should go wrong, you'll always have that manual backup safely stored away.
Also, your add-on apps...depending on those, they may or may not be compatible. What I also recommend is to make a manual list of all of your additional apps, including where you obtained them from along with any activation keys. That way, you can reinstall them cleanly into the new OS level. You also have the ability then to search out the app developer and inquire of them as to their app compatibility with the new OS level.
Rather than the method you are being prompted to use, I recommend the following. From a PC, you can install any OS package to a BB via this procedure:

Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC. You can even use a different carriers OS package by simply inserting, between steps 1 and 2, the deletion, on your PC, of a file named VENDOR.XML. Be sure that you remove, from your PC, any other BB device OS packages as having more than one installed to the PC can cause conflicts with this procedure.
If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:
