5.1 and minimac

i've a home theater 5.1 without digital out but with 3 rca. How i can use this with my macmini?

RCA jacks are not digital and do not carry Dolby Digital 5.1 signals. I assume you mean that the Home Theater Reciever only has a digital coaxial input (which looks like RCA). If that is the case then you need an optical digital to coaxial digital converters (Radio Shack used to sell these, they also have them on Amazon). The digital output from the mini is via a special optical cable such as this
http://www.amazon.com/3-5MM---TOSLINK-FIBER-OPTIC-TOSLINK-mini-Toslink/dp/B00006 LVF3/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1316707855&sr=8-1
This may still not give you 5.1 from the mini. Check the threads here about this problem. I haven't gotten 5.1 using either an HDMI or a digital optical connection.

  • For 3 years my iMac and miniMac both communicated with a Canon printer and the internet using an Airport Extreme.  Last winter, the miniMac lost printing via the Airpor and now can't communicate with the network at all.

For three years my iMac and Mac mini were networked via Airport Extreme with a printer and the internet.  More recently, I added an iMac and iPhone.   PROBLEMS:  A few months ago the Mac mini lost its connection to  the printer, and now it cannot locate the network at all.

If you use the extreme as a router then the tc should be connected via its wan port to one of the lan ports on the extreme. Tc should be set up in bridge mode. Basically you could set it up to create another wireless network beside the one created by the extreme. There is no need to use WDS or extend the other network.
Use the same SSID and password for both machines. Computers will connect to the strongest signal.

I have recently upgraded my iBookG4 from Tiger to Leopard 10.5.8 and find my Bluetooth USB adaptor no longer connects. The Bluetooth pane says inactive. Does Leopard require  USB 2.0. I've had the adaptor for some time so may be USB 1.0

Bluetooth icon on menu bar shows bluetooth off. When opening bluetooth preferences it shows the devices I've connected previously,( my mobile phone), and other devices I've attempted to connect but not very successfully: my iPhone and MiniMac.  The bluetooth dongle in the USB port shows a continual blue light but does not react and the iBook does not recognise that it is there. There is absolutely no reaction when I try to pair my mobile phone, which I've done successfully before upgrading to Leopard, either by the iBook or the mobile phone.
I assumed that Tiger was not bluetooth compatible with the iPhone or MacMini running SnowLeopard and hoped by upgrading to Leopard I could achieve some file transfers between the three devices (iBook, iPhone and MacMini)

  • "You are not connected to the internet"....sometimes.

I've had to write this in IE on XP in Parallels as it is the only reliable way I can access the web. Since upgrading to 10.6, Safari (and Firefox to a lesser extent) has been giving me frequent (and instant) "You are not connected to the internet" errors. If I try another site I may get there straight away and then re-trying the original site may get me there. Or not. Very intermittent. Also, when finally accessed some sites aren't rendering properly. Right now in Safari I have Apple's site up with 18 errors, no graphics, default fonts, no layout. Activity shows the errors as "This computer's internet connection appears to be" - the rest of the message cannot be seen.
The other way I could have posted this is to use my wife's MacBook running 10.5 - no problems there. It's almost like it wants an instant DNS lookup and if that isn't forthcoming it spits. But then, why "not connected"? Wouldn't it be "Server cannot be contacted"? What is it that prompts Safari to believe the internet is not connected. This is a major pain!

This is interesting! Something is not correct here. Either the time I took to back-up on Time Machine prior to installing OS X 10.6 caused my MacBook Pro to overheat overnight or the OS X 10.6 has a problem with the ethernet card or internet. To clarify, I have yesterday and today upgraded a MacBook Pro, iMac and MiniMac with OS X 10.6. The only problem I have is the MacBook Pro will not connect to the internet via cable to the router. All the machines including the MacBook Pro connect via ethernet or WiFi to my network no problem. The MacBook Pro even connects to the internet via WiFi but not ethernet. So I suspect overheating!. See what transpires when I start it up again.

  • Why Does My Calculator 'Currency Conversion' Not Work

Yesterday I updated my Security Software on both of my computers: G4 Powerbook and MiniMac.... Today while using the Apple CALCULATOR, I decided to update the 'currency conversion table' (on my laptop). After clicking the UPDATE button it went through its normal downloading/updating aspect and the usual window popped up that reads, "currencies updated:", except the window was anything but usual.... it was wider than my screen... and it said "currencies updated:" but had nothing listed at all on the visible window, it was blank!
Being that I could not move the window to reveal a close button the only way I could close it was to use the FORCE QUIT. Upon reopening the calculator and making a currency conversion, the currency selection windows are larger than normal and selecting a particular currency has no affect. It doesn't respond at all.
Thinking it was a glitch on my laptop I updated the 'currency conversion' on the MiniMAC and exactly the same thing transpired on it, as well.....
    So.....
Can somebody tell me how to fix this so I can use my calculator(s) again?
Is there something wrong with Apple's link to CURRENCY UPDATE that did this or is there something amiss with the new Security Update (2006-008) ?

Thanks Rostron .... for at least checking it out on your machine... guess if it happened to you also, it must be a glitch with the Apple Software or update... guess I needed to know that it wasn't both my computers.
Thanks for the Dashboard Widget suggestion. That's what I ended up doing, but I do like the convenience of the regular Calculator as I generally have it already open.
So I guess I'll send info to Apple about this 'BUG' and maybe I should warn everybody to 'NOT' UPDATE THE CURRENCY CONVERSION TABLE lest this predicament may befall them as well!

  • I am VERY nervous advice needed

    I have a iBook G4 14" 1.07GHz and miniMac on 10.3.9 all running well
I have full backups of all and lots of periferials
Epson 2100 inkjet, Lexmark 510C laser, vst smartdisk lacie external drives
external dvd burner, epson scanner, hp 930c inkjet, usb hubs.
I plan to upgrade to 10.4.5 mainly for adobe lightroom and now have purchased the disks.
With all the issues I am very nervous as I use this for business.
Is there are tips I should do before putting the disks in for upgrade ?
I know its a wide question but any help would be great.

There is no specific install of OS X. There are disks that will only install on specific devices. This is the case with your mini install discs. This is to help stop piracy.
The checklist you have recieved is fairly accurate, and nothing on there does harm (though some is a watse of time, in my opinion). The fact that you have a backup is your main defense. Do a full backup, just before you install Tiger, and startup on it to make ceratin it works (launch a few iApps to be certain).

  • Urgent help needed, thanks.

I am currently in London, but live in the Namib Desert in Namibia. I've been told by the techy in Apple shop London that Apple Remote Desktop 3 will do all of the following and have purchased it, I leave back for the desert and will not have the opportunity to change the product after the 24th Dec. Would someone please be kind enough to confirm that I have done the right thing. Thanks a million.
I need a system whereupon all docs and files on my powerbook, iMac and Minimac will sync so that at say 12.00am. everyday they all have the same info on them. I run airport at home and all the machines are constantly on, I also have 24/7 internet (a huge brag in Namibia). Futhermore I travel around a fair bit and need to access files on my iMac (at home) from my laptop (in the UK for example).
A huge thank you in advance for taking the time to help a mac novice so to speak. Although I'd rather be a mac novice than a windows expert.

Apple Remote Desktop is not a synchronization solution. You can use it to copy files between the administrator workstation and the client (and vice-versa), but you will have to know what needs to be copied and do it yourself; it won't do determine what needs to be copied for you. If synchronization of files between your two systems is all you wish to do, ARD is probably not the best solution for you and I would advise you return it.
Probably a better solution is to just set up file sharing on your iMac, set up your Airport to allow outside access to the iMac (look for information on port forwarding in the Airport forums if you need assistance), and use a utility such as Synk to handle the copying.

  • Calculator doesent work on currency

When I run update currency, no currency updates shows up on the list. When I try to convert a number the list to choose currency "from -> to" is so wide I cant see the currency. The currency is there aligned middle when the list is selcted.
I have already trashed the .plist and updated the currencies. Does not help.

I am inclined to agree with Graham as I had no problems until I updated the CURRENCY CONVERSION on both my Powerbook and MiniMac. They both now suffer from this malady. I had also just uploaded the new Security Update yesterday.. so don't know if there is a conflict with that one either.
I just posted this problem on a new posting (having not found any other similar problems) and one poster (at this time) responded that in his curiosity he also just updated the CURRENCY CONVERSION and now he has the same problem... I think that tells us that it may be site related and not on our particular machines........

  • Quicktime MPEG2 Plugin - no audio playing VOB

I would really, really apreciate any help.
I have the latest MAC X on a macbook pro and minimac 1.86, both running latest version of QT7, not Pro. I installed the MPG2 plugin. I get video but no audio with VOB files. I was having the same problem with VLC on both machines, but I fix it changing the audio device from 0 to 1 on the preferences.
How can I get the QT to play it with audio?
I just want to play my ripped DVDs using the front row.
    TKS a lot

QT Player can play only M1A a.k.a. MP2 audio in
    MPEGs.
MPEG Streamclip can play also AC3 and PCM audio -- it
can also convert them to M1A audio that QT Player can
    understand.
Thank you, it is very helpful information, because at least Streamclip is universal binary! But... it is not an absolute solution, because Streamclip is a converter - so it converts video, so it takes a lot of processor time...
If it is just a QuickTime extension...
    However - Thanks!

  • How do I run Windows programs on my iMac and my MiniMac?

I have a new iMac and a new MiniMac at the office. Can I run Windows programs on these computers, such as QuickBooks? If so, how do I do it?

If you want to run MS Windows applications on your iMac and Mac Mini you need a license of MS Windows at a minimum. Then you need to decide how you want to run the apps, you can use Boot Camp which allows you to install MS Windows on your computer and then boot your computer as either a MS Windows machine or OS X machine. The advantage of this is there is no cost (except for MS Windows) as Boot Camp comes with every Mac. You will find Boot Camp Setup Assistant in (Applications - Utilities - Boot Camp Setup Assistant). The other solution is virtualization software such as Parallels or VM Ware Fusion. The advantage of virtualization software is you can run MS Windows and OS X simultaneously. This is ideal if you are not doing graphics intensive applications such as 3D gaming, CAD/CAM or 3D renderings. For applications like QuickBooks it would be great.
The downside of running MS Windows on your Mac is that portion of the computer will be susceptible to all the problems PC's have such as Virus's and other malware. So whatever solution you get you need to also get anti-virus software and other anti-malware. The upside is if Windows becomes diseased this in no way affects OS X.
Finally your best solution is to look for OS X versions of your applications. I know there is a OS X version of QuickBooks however I have no idea how Intuit's licensing works, you would need to contact Intuit to ask that question.

  • Got new miniMac servers with 2x750GB drives. How to setup and confirm RAID mirror?

Literally just got shiny new miniMac Server with the dual 70GB internakky hard drives/disks with
OS X 10.7.$ LION pre-installed. What a nice machine in a super cool box!
Seemed to bootup and run fine!
Now my issue (there will be more for this MAC newbie):
    A. How to setup AND more importantly (item B below) CONFIRM that a RAID MIRROR is working?
Want nothing fancier than 2-nd drive is exact duplicate of 1-st drive at all times.
That is, an 'active and full up-to -the second" backup of the main 1-st drive.
I have done nothing to 1-st drive as it came from APPLE.
When I try to setup RAID set using DISK Utility, I get message about system(1-st drive) can't be used in a RAID or such.
yet I can add 2-nd drive to what I tink is a RAID set and then 'Enable' it.
It seems to add another entry to thr left-side of drves list panel but not sure that 1-st and 2-nd drives are BOTH in the new
"RAID SET' or that the set just consists of the "single" 2-nd disk?
    B. I don't think that 1-st drive data is actually being duplicated to 2-nd drive.
For instance, how do I know that it was 'caught up' to match 1-st drive AND then is
    staying caught up?
    C. A 'RAID UTILITY' Icon brings up a not-available message, but I think that is because I don't
have HARDWARE RAID controller, just software RAID, correct?
    D. What is 'Time Machine' and how does it play into this? I do assume that somehow/someway I need to
have off-machine backups also to be truly protected? How would a 2-nd identical miniMAC server be best
deployed to back each other up, in addition to their own internal RAID-ed disks that items above address?
My whole point of buying 2x750GB disks was to have mirror RAID set and
(foolishly) assumed that factory would set it up that way.
Please help me get setup right so when the inevitable crash happens,
I have some chance of recovering from it.

    A. What are you adding to the RAID: a partition or a hard drive? You can only add hard drives to a RAID. RAID Utility should confirm that your RAID is working
    B. No, I don't think so
    C. It's because you haven't got RAID hardware.
    D. Time Machine is a backup system in external drives. If you want, you can do backups in a external hard drive.

  • After my first questio: can not find the link for free download firefox 6. You answered and I used the link you send. nr 5 was downloaded but it did not work on a minimac it said the version of the mac does not allow it. What to do use the 3.6

The upgrade notification did not give a free download icon so I asked you and you replyed with an email with a link. I went to the page and could happily download nr 5 instead of 6 but well.
Now firefox gives still the notification to upgrade and what i downloaded does not work on my mac with safari.
So can i savely stay with 3.6 ?

You can't use Firefox 4 on Mac OS X 10.4, on on 10.5 you need the Intel chip.
It would be easier if you replied to your original question, so someone can see what you are talking about. There are a lot of questions asked even in a single day so we can't see what that was easily. If you need to redownload 3.6.17 then
    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
I tried a search on your name and that didn't work, but you could possibly have found your previous post via the "My contributions" link at the top of
    https://support.mozilla.com/questions
I doubt that Firefox 5 or 6 would be any different, once support is dropped for hardware or operating system it stays dropped, you need to stay with version 3.
