5.1 from DVD player?

Hi, I recently played a DVD through my macbook hooked to my receiver via optical, and it only gave me 2 channel audio. is 5.1 out possible?

Is it possible to export a video clip from DVD player to iMovie '09?

If I load a homemade DVD onto my iMac using Disk Utility and then import either the entire disc or portions of the disc into iMovie, that works just fine. However I noticed that some clips are missing in iMovie, even though they are on the iMac in form of a .dmg file on the desktop. The same file that was used to import in to iMovie. If I look at this file using DVD player, everything is there, but some of these clips are missing in the event window. So I created a video clip in DVD player of those pieces missing in iMovie and now how can I get these into iMovie?

Hey, best way to import video from a DVD video disc for editing is to acctually have a simple video file. Use Handbrake or MPEG StreamClip to read the disc and create a video file off the video stream.
You could also set in and out points anc manually create several clips, which may help with playback and rendering for editing. I don't know how extensive you're going to get in your editing with iMovie...

Could i play sound from DVD Player to my stereo?

I have iBook with Airpot Extreme card. I want to buy Express station. Is there is somebody who did try to broadcast sound to express station from something different than iTunes? May it is just impossible?

Before you buy one for this purpose, you must realize that you're liable to be frustrated trying to get the audio to sync with the video. In fact, you'll have to use an app other than Apple's DVD Player in order to get the sync halfway close, and even then you'll likely never get it perfect.
VLC is one possibility. You'll need to use the audio delay option with a negative offset to advance the audio ahead of the video a couple of seconds to compensate for the Airport Express prebuffering delay.

Can't record sound from DVD player

I just built a new DAW with a Gigabyte MoBo that has the Realtek sound chip on board. I installed an M-Audio external Fast Track Pro connected to the computer with USB 2.0. With the two sound devices I can play Band in a Box (my main band) through the Realtek and out put to my mixer. I then use my Line 6 Pod XT as a preamp to my guitar that also goes to my Behringer mixer. I connect the main out (R&L) from the mixer to the 1 and 2 inputs on the M-audio. I set Audio Hardware setup in AA3 to use the M Audio device for input and am able to record mixer output to tracks in AA3. I tried several configs and this is the only one that I found that works. All is good so far.
I installed a SATA DVD player (Lite on 24x) that works fine, but it plays through the M-Audio via USB, bypassing the Realtek chip, and the sound does not show up in AA3. I'm thinking I need to route the DVD output to the mixer to use the channel that is already set up. I've been trying to output the DVD player through the onboard Realtek but can't find any way to direct it to do so. I don't necessarily need it to play through the Realtek, but I want to be able to record from the DVD player.
So, does anyone have any idea how to direct the output of the DVD player to the sound card of choice? I'm stumped.

Thanks for your reply. Realtek audio works only in playback. There is a stereo mix in the mixer but the recording controls are not operable with no sliders in the mixer for any recording option. Slider controls appear to be grayed out. Can't figure out how to enable them. Downloaded newest drivers to no avail.
The M Audio control panel has no apparent option for recording stereo mix. Adobe ignores the sound from the DVD or CD and shows flatline.
I'm trying to record the sound from the DVD not rip the track.
When I go to Audio Driver Setup and select Audition 3.0 windows sound, there is no input device installed.
I'm thinking of going back to a decent internal Soundblaster card like I have on my 8 year old machine I am replacing.

Screen Captures from DVD Player?

I'm using the Apple DVD v3.2, and am wondering if it's possible to catch screen captures (to use for my desk top)....from movies.
I just read the Quicktime question for screen captures, but that didn't work for the DVD player.

Having a strange problem when trying to play DVD's.
DVD Player plays the images but I get no audio.
I've fiddled with the DVD's language options and
the DVD player controls but still nothing.
So far I've had this problem with all twelve DVD's I experimented with.
CD's, QuickTime, MP3, etc. files play fine - no problems so the problem seems to be DVD Player.

I am having the same problem with my G5. It just started today. The most recent update I have done was yesterday to the latest version of iTunes. I have also updated my Powerbook but it hasn't seemed to have affected it yet. I have tried playing DVD's in the VLC media player and at first I get no audio as well but if I change the audio setting from "built-in (encoded)" to just "built-in" it pays back the audio fine. Any ideas?

No Sound From DVD Player

I received my new (refurb.) 15" PB today. Everything works great except I can get no sound from Apples DVD player. CDs, iTunes, system sounds etc. all work correctly. Audo output is set to System Sound Output in DVD Preferences. Using VLC I get DVD sound but lots of dropped frame errors. Any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem. I can play the video part of a DVD but no sound. Audio CDs and Windows sounds work fine. Does this mean I'm missing a DVD codec or is there a software setting I'm missing. The Nvidia codec costs money. Is there a free codec that will fix this? This is with Windows XP and Audigy 2 LS.

Doing grabs from dvd player

I've only just started learning how to use the Grab function.
Is it possible to do a grab from a movie I am playing on the dvd player?
A salesman at the local Apple store told me it's doable,
but when I tried just now, a window popped up
and said that 'Screen grabs are unavailable during DVD playback,'
and to 'Quit DVD player first.'

As far as I know it is not possible and you will need to use a third party app to accomplish it. Have a look at this topic with its accompaning link for a list of applications that are compatible with your OS.

Title safe different from dvd player to computer DVD player

I have a title problem where I have a screen divided into three sections. I have a title on the top right that needs to be centered in own space . I have marked where a set top dvd player cuts the video off, a little more than action safe. I centered the text based on that. Problem is if someone plays the dvd on a computer dvd player nothing gets cut off and the title looks off center. Any ideas?

How do I get good audio feed from DVD player to my MBP using an optic cable

I have successfully recorded audio off of concert DVD's using Sound Studio 3 by connecting my DVD player to my MBP using left/right outputs to a 35mm input. I purchased an optical cable, connected it to my DVD player and used a 35mm adapter to connnect it to my MBP input. All I get is a weird popping interferance type sound instead of clear audio. Any tips on what is going on? I have correct settings in system preferences (recognizes an optical connection) but all I hear is noise?

It gives you a few options for audio, I generally save as AAC though you can rip as AIFF and then encode into just about anything with quicktime.

Output from DVD player as input to GB?

Is there a way to take the output of the DVD player as the input to Garage Band on one computer?
I can do this now using two computers hooked together (output of one feeds input of another).
I want to eliminate noise incurred on the line between the computers.

no. you'd have to use software like iRecord, Audio Hijack, or WireTap

Burning disc from DVD player

I would like to burn copies of a DVD video. How should I copy the DVD onto a file before inserting a blank DVD into my optical drive?

Then you can use a aftermarket program for direct Disc Copy function or use Disk Utility to make a DMG of it then burn/restore that DMG to another disc. Do a google search for "Create DMG image from DVD disc with Disk Utility" and then "Restore DMG image to DVD disc with Disk Utility". I'm sure there will be many sites that have instructions.

Video Clips from DVD Player

While watching a personal DVD, converted from a VCR tape, I wanted to create & Save a clip.
I performed a set start time and set stop time, followed by "Add". I then named the clip.
Now I can't find the clip, which is supposed to be in my "clip collection". I haven't established a clip collection. Where would such a collection be established and later found? Thank you.

In order to edit a DVD you have to make another one, in other words: bring the video into iMovie, edit, and burn a new DVD.
You need to convert the VOB files on the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:

Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

No multi-channel audio from DVD Player or Quicktime?

I have the A52Codec 1.7.6 installed. The codec preferences are set to output multi-channel audio. I have my Audio MIDI setup speaker configuration setup for multi-channel audio and the speaker assignment tests are all perfect. VLC plays back files with AC-3 soundtracks in perfect 5.1 multi-channel sound. Final Cut plays multi-channel audio properly as well.
When I watch a DVD, it is decoded to stereo. The dialog on 5.1 always comes from the left and right speakers and never from the center channel. It doesn't matter whether I remove the A52Codec and try again the result is aways the same, 5.1 audio in Quicktime and DVD Payer gets decoded to stereo. It is not that extra channels are missing, if that were true I'd get no dialog at all.
What do I have to do to make the DVD and Quicktime multi-channel audio decode as multi-channel audio and not stereo.

I'm not sure if this will resolve your issue or not, but have you configured it using /Utilities/Audi MIDI Setup ?

Digitize from DVD Player

I have a Pioneer DVR-520H that has Firewire IN/OUT, and I'm trying to digitize into FCP. I have non-controllable device/DV NTSC 48Hz selected and I'm getting no video. However, I'm getting an audio signal. What am I doing wrong? Thank you.

Might it be part of the DRM on the disc? Are you using one without copy protection?
Maybe there's also something in the menu options where it tells the deck to send video out via FW.

EDIT -- is this one of the decks with a HD in it? I tried to DL the manual, but it wouldn't let me w/o an id and password. Maybe the FW is just for the HD? Don't know.
Maybe try it in iMovie or QTPro to see if it isn't some setting in FCP that is causing you the trouble.
