5.1 mixes into Compressor; our experience

We just remastered a show in 5.1. We had some strange problems (like no center, LFE or surround channels!) when we exported from FCP to Compressor.
Our problem was indeed using "Export to Compressor" in FCP. The secret seems to be to Export each track as a Quick Time file and then dragging these into Compressor. You can actually drag each channel onto an icon in Compressor--it can handle up to 6.1 surround.
Be sure to keep each track at 48Khz. I think it might dither the tracks from 24 bit down to 16, but I'm not sure. (I was listening to our producer over the phone.)
Don't freak when the Batch window only shows one file--usually the first file you dragged into Compressor. All the other tracks are there.
Our 5.1 Dolby Digital AC-3 is PERFECT! (O.K. We are going to bring the C channel down a smidge, but the darn thing works!!)
Thought y'all would like to know this--we are newbies too and it's been a LONG road getting here. It is one extra step with the creating the Quick Time files, but it's worth it.
Power Mac G5 Quad 6.5 Gb RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Final Cut Pro, Compressor, DVD Studio Pro

can you help me with this....
i'm making a sample dvd that has one menu and one video track. when i go to export the audio (using final cut 4.5) to compressor using the dolby presets, it generates the file but the file does not play in DVD Studio pro 4.
I have ac3 files that i made with A.pack with dvd studio pro 2 and they work fine in DVD Studio Pro 4.
Can anyone tell me why i cant get compressor to output an ac3 file that can play in my dvd studio pro 4
I have to turn this project in ASAP.

We experience it as soon as we enable iCloud. Then an apple certificate is automatically added to the keychain and used for every https-access. Deleting the certificate com.apple.idms.appleid.prd... will do as a workaround but the certificate continues to be added to the keyChain from time to time or if you start over deactivating iCloud and then activate back.

  • ?How to import droplet into compressor 4.1

    Hey guys,
I exported a droplet from Compressor 4.1 on a different machine, now I can't import it into my 4.1. I've done this in the past and now I can't get it to work, what do I need to do?
    Thanks!

    Hi Russ,
I have the droplet on both machines. It was made on Computer A, and I was then able to import the droplet back in to compressor as a custom setting on Computer A. When I brought the droplet over to Computer B, it won't let me import it into compressor as a custom setting, it only lets me use it as a droplet. It's not the worst of all things, but I like having it as a custom setting so I can set it as a destination in FCP X.
I hope that cleared things up.

  • Import .m2v file into Compressor.

    Hi,
Is it possible to Import a .m2v file into Compressor?
    If so, How?
    Thanks in advance.
    Mac Pro
    Intel Xeon
    Final Cut Studio 3

    Try again.
    Yes.
Just a reminder that the m2v is an elementary stream – video only. If you need it muxed with audio, it can be done in DVD SP or in MPEG Streamclip.

  • Artwork from podcasts is getting mixed into other music

I started downloading podcasts recently, and shortly afterwards I found this problem. The artwork that comes with podcasts is getting mixed into my album artwork and vice-versa. This is only happening on my iPod, not on my computer. In iTunes, the artwork is with the correct files. The only way I've found to fix this problem is to:
    a)delete the artwork from iTunes
    b)sync my iPod
c)attach the artwork back onto the file
    d)sync my iPod again
It only happens with some albums, in a random pattern. Anyone else have this problem? If so, is there a permanent fix? I've got the latest version of iTunes.

Known but rare problem. No known fix.
There is no need to delete the artwork from iTunes. Just change setting for iPod, sync, turn on artwork option again, sync again.

Apple drives in MacBooks do not support mini DVDs. They cannot be injected or ejected properly. Some of them work in tray-loaders like on the Mac Pro.
Yes, make an appointment and take it to the Genius Bar.

  • Three iTune accounts have become mixed up on our computer.  I want to run separate instances of iTunes for each

Three iTunes accounts have become mixed up on our computer.  I want to be able to run three instances of iTunes independently.  Thanks,

Hey Shootist000,  Thanks for the replies.  First off, I am actually okay if we both have each other applications so I am not concerned about that. It is still unclear from what you have said as to whether I can in fact, use these two separte time machine backup to create two separate profiles on the new hard drive.  If that in fact can be done, then - will it create two copies of the apps we both have in the ROOT of the drive as well as placing all the ones we each have separately?
And reading your second reply, makes me think that maybe the partition is the way to go to begin with and then down the road - after I am in the new iMac, I could reformat the iMac 27 with only one partion and restore my son's latest back prior to the reformat thus giving him full access to the 2 TB of the drive.
If this is still making sense, does this mean :
    replace the 1TB with a 2TB - but have it partitione - 1.5 TB & 500 GB.
Install(Restore using Time Machine) my latest back up prior to the  1.5 partition
Install (Restore using Time Machine) my son's latest back up prior to the 500 gig partition
Lastly, in order for us both to be using the partioned computer - I am assuming Switch user can no longer be used - so would we need to restart and select our respective partions in order to use the computer?   And if so, how would we each be able to be using time machine to back up - two separte external hard drives - with each one dedicated to only one partition? Or ?
    Thanks so much.
Ironically, I am only trying to do this so that I don't need to manually install all his apps, setting, games, blah blah for this temporary period.  :-)

  • Bringing HDV into compressor problem

I'm having a problem compressing a HDV file straight out of FCP from my sequence... and I'm hoping someone can point me to some info for help.
I am done editing my HDV footage, and my sequence and project are set to the correct HDV settings. Now when I export from my sequence, to Compressor, the footage is set to SD settings automatically in Compressor. I just don't get it.
Now, if I export from FCP as a quicktime movie and create a new HDV file, then import that file into Compressor everything is cool.
Can I avoid having to export using quicktime movie, and just go directly to Compressor.
My final file from compressor is H264 (480x270)
    Any advise would be awesome...
    Thanks

have had similar issues way back as exporting to COMPRESSOR from FCP TIMELINE... just locks up after a while.
Suggest workaround with FCS 2 workflow, :
    • export as SELF CONTAINED QT movie (transient file for your work flow) - suggest PRORESS 422 - seems to run faster in COMPRESSOR rater than HDV LGOP format. (others will debate this).
    • use above to INPUT into COMPRESSOR
    • purge transient movie when transcode from compressor ok.
    works for me.

  • MTS Files into Compressor

    Hello everyone,
I have read various threads explaining why Compressor isn't suitable for converting .mts files into ProRes files and that it will not work.  For some reason, one of my computers is able to do this...but none of my other computers are.  We have NO idea why it works on just one computer (iMac), when we cannot even drag the files into Compressor on the others (Mac Pros and iMacs).  Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

Yes, SJ, FCP L&T does convert AVCHD/.MTS files into ProRes or AIC, however, L&T does not work if the folders or files have been altered or if anything has been deleted from the folder or files.
As I have been researching this the past month, I have seen hundreds of posts on people asking which converter program to use for .MTS files. Other folks have mistakingly saved just the 'STREAM' folder or have done something similar and now L&T will not recognize the .MTS files. What I'm searching for and I know many others are searching for, is an excellent quality conversion program that will convert .MTS into Apple ProRes 422.
PavTube, MovieConverter Studio, MPEG Streamclip, and others suck, they will only convert into a .mov with an H.264(amongst many other non-professional formats and codecs) and then you have to render the files in FCP and the quality takes a major hit. These cheap $35-50 programs will NOT convert to Apple ProRes and they are unreliable.

  • Taking 2-minute HD clip into Compressor / QuickTime

Have: a 2 minute clip, shot in HD, edited in FCP7. Exported it as a FCP QuickTime movie, 1080i60, size is 441MB.
Need to: take that QuickTime file into Compressor and create a much smaller file, which will ultimately be converted to Flash and posted on a Web site. Have tried various QuickTime outputs in Compressor -- the resulting files are either too large, blurry, or lose the widescreen aspect ratio.
    Help!

Ok here is an update.  GET THIS!!!   I read in another forum that you should just export QT from FCP and then import into compressor so I tried it.
My FCPX export Apple Pro ResHQ took...... (drum roll).... 79 SECONDS to export compared to the 20 minutes that Compressor did.
Quality of the two MOV's were identical and the FCPX version was slightly smaller 2.57GB vs 2.75GB for Compressor.
Now I'm totally confused.  I've I'm using the MOV to import into Adobe Encore to author my DVD, what is compressor to be used for ????

  • Project won't load into compressor.

I'm trying to load a project into compressor and it is telling me that there are NO FILES associated with the project.
I haven't moved or chaged anything with this project and I have been burning DVD's recently from it.
I get the spinning ball when it asks me to find files.  I checked the project and all the files are connected, no offline media.
I tried going into time machine and bringing the project back from some weeks ago and the same thing happens. within the same project in a different sequence, that will open successfully in compressor.
    Any suggestions with this problem?
    Catherine

Have you tried trashing your preferences?
Unexplained faults like this can often be fixed by clearing out FCP X's preferences (for some reason, they get knotted up from time to time).
Download Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager (free, simple to use, and perfectly safe, both to download and use).
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
With Preference Manager, you can backup the Prefs when FCP X (or any of the Apple Professional Applications) are working normally. Then when either of the applications are acting strangely, Trash the Preferences, then Restore from your backups (just a mouse-click).
If you trash the prefs and don't restore them, you will need to manually restore all your FCP X settings again, so it's a great idea to backup Preferences from time to time when FCP X is working well, then your backups are up to date.
Doesn't fix every problem, but it fixes a lot.

  • Can't drag motion files into Compressor anymore

I used to be able to drag Motion files into the batch window in Compressor, and now I can't. I've tried trashing preferences - no effect. It's frustrating because loss of this ability doesn't coincide with any update, so I'm not sure what it could be. Does anyone with more compressor experience than me have any ideas?

Somehow, when I tried to drag from the finder, I didn't always get the right song!  But if I double clicked that song in the finder, the right song was played by iTunes, even though the wrong song showed up in Garage Band.  Dragging to and from the desktop worked fine, and I just dragged it from the desktop to the trash after I worked on it in Garage Band for editing and "sharing" back into iTunes.

  • Export to Compressor or Export to Quicktime then into Compressor

    Hi,
Already for a long I am wondering whether it would make a significant difference when you export video directly to compressor from FCP or indirectly via Quicktime to Compressor. If you have any experience regarding this, please let me no know.
    Thank you

The main difference is that using the Export Using Compressor method, Compressor will look at the original format & framerate of each clip in your sequence and will render out based upon that. So if you have some higher quality clips in your sequence, Compressor will take that into consideration when producing the final encode. It could actually give you a slightly better quality picture.
If you were to export a movie first, then run that through Compressor, Compressor only sees the one file and one format.
MacBreak weekly produced a small episode that explains how Compressor works in this manner. It should answer your question.
