5.1 sound in Safari through HDMI?

Hello all!
I recently bought a new pro retina 15".
I connected through HDMI cable to my Denon AVR 1713 as my old laptop used to be.
What a surprise when starting an oline video on Safari, I couldn't get 5.1 sound in my speakers connected to the denon.
I tried everything I've found in this forum, configuring MIDI settings for 5.1 system. But nothing seems to work.
I like to see videos online and via some other programs such VLC
Is this normal? Some way to overcome this?
Thanks a lot
Best Regards

The sound comes from an editor who is a pro and knows how to deliver 5.1.
I also have premiere ( 5.5 ) so I guess I can import the film and the audio in there and then export for a convert to DCP.
Or if I understand you right I can use a CDP processing software like
http://www.magnamana.com/finaldcp-released/
and there I import still images and the sound seperate?
That´s how it works?

On my laptop, I have to add "options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=0xffff,0xff2" to a modprobe.d conf file. You can try that.
    sudo su
    echo "options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=0xffff,0xff2" >> /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
    exit
After that, restart and hopefully it will work.

  • Thinkpad S540 - no sound through hdmi

    Hi,
Just installed win 8.1 x64 on my S540, updated all drivers from lenovo support site and all went smooth, but I cant get the sound to work through hdmi when I cconnect my s540 to my tv, internal speakers keep playing and I cant even select hdmi output in control panel -> sound.
here are some pictures, they are in swedish but you might know what it's suppose to say in english:
here you can see what it looks like when my hdmi is connected to laptop from tv, does not even say connected

And here you can see that it is not even possible to make hdmi out put "default" playback device as one should be able to do

Still, laptop knows it is connected to my sharp tv via hdmi as intel control panel says it:

    Hi,
I also have a S540 and I'm facing the same issue, using a HMDI (Working!!) cable, when I open Control Panel -> Sound, I'm getting "Not plugged in"...
I already uninstalll display and sound drivers and installed the most recent ones.

  • No choice of sound output with lightning HDMI adapter connected.

When the lightning HDMI adapter is plugged in, sound is piped through HDMI but I want the option to have the sound come through the iPad speaker, because the mini projector I use has only a 1 Watt speaker built-in, and the iPad sound is louder.  Anyone figure out how to choose speaker output?

I don't believe that is possible.
Does the projector have an audio output jack to connect powered speakers?

  • Sound through hdmi to my tv works but not when watching video online like 4OD

the sound through hdmi to my tv works with music and videos I have downloaded, but not when watching video online like 4OD and youtube.
How can I get it to work?

Ok so I happened to figure it out while on the phone to apple support. Even though the guy was very nice, I think I knew more than him! He was explaining very basic resolution principles I played about. I had the second option in displays resolution. All I did was unplug the HDMI cable, click on 'best for display' then plugged the HDMI in and my resolution on the normal monitor changed to the normal blue, then went black momentarily and then changed to a strange resolution but another window appeared that said SONY BRAVIA HDMI at the top! Hey presto! Don't know why it didn't do it yesterday - I probably left the HDMI cable in or something! Oh well. Problem solved!

  • No sound through hdmi - macbook pro

I can connect my tv to my macbook pro through a HDMI cable and the picture shows up perfectly. However, the sound goes through my laptop speakers and not through the tv. When I go into Preferences --> sound --> output, there is not option to select for the hdmi, just the internal speakers. How can I get the sound to go through the tv instead?

no, it is not, but after searching these boards even more i discovered this gem, and now all is good, except that u have to change the audio each time......i think......so i mite get an audio cable to make it easier for my hon to hook up........here is the gem

Re: No sound over Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter     Sep 12, 2011 1:09 AM    (in response to yvonnelouise1)
DisplayPort to HDMI Sound is actually set up by using the MIDI setup utility found in :
Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup.
If you purchased an iWires cable direct from Apple the instructions are in the printed booklet that comes in the packaging. Most people don't read this as it's normally the case that when you plug a cable in to anything it just works (VCR, TiVo, Xbox, video camera etc). In this instance Apple are failing to live up to their catch-phrase as final setup is NOT intuitive; "it just DOESN'T work".
The booklet instructions basically say do the following,
    Video
System Preferences > Displays. There are 3 tabs in the window; Displays, Arrangement and Color. Be sure you are on the Displays tab. Bottom left of the window tick "Show displays in menu bar" and then bottom right click "Detect Displays".
Now click on the tab named Arrangement. Bottom left of the window tick "Mirror Displays".
You should now only see 2 tabs, Display and Color. Be sure you are on the Displays tab. Select the desired resolution for your TV (probably 1080i). leave all other settings at their default values.
    Sound
System Preferences > Sound. There are 3 tabs in the window; Sound Effects, Output and Input. Be sure you are on the Sound Effects tab. Middle of the window select your TV where it says "Play sound effects through:".
Select the middle tab named Output.
Select your TV from the drop-down list next to HDMI, below where it says "Select a device for sound output".
Using either Finder or Launchpad go to Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup.
On the left-hand side of the window you should now see HDMI. In the middle of the window, on the Output tab, where it says "Source:" select your TV from the drop-down list.
This last action below is NOT described in the iWires notes but was required in my case, it may also be required in yours. If you CANNOT see a speaker icon next to HDMI in the list on the left, do the following:
Bottom left of the window select the wheel icon with the down-pointing triangle. Make sure that sound output is selected and that you can now see a speaker icon next to HDMI in the list of devices.
If you still cannot hear sound, log out of your account and then log back in.
You will now have sound coming out of your TV from your computer
You may have to do some or all of the above to get sound out of your TV from your computer using the DisplayPort to HDMI cable. On my Aug 2011 MacbookPro I had to do ALL of the above.  If you take your laptop to a different TV you will have to do it all again so be warned.
    Hope this helps. "

  • No sound through HDMI alternative solution

If you are not able to get sound through your TV through HDMI and have tried all the System Preferences/Audio MIDI steps detailed on here in other threads but nothing works, try just shutting down all running apps.
I had to Force Quit Spotify, Viber, Skype - when I shut down iTunes, the sound from Firefox started coming through the TV. I have since been able to reopen Spotify and play it through the TV too.
I'm not sure why these apps would interfere with the HDMI sound transmission, perhaps more technically inclined people can answer this but it turned out to be a straightforward solution that I didn't find on here (although maybe I just didn't look hard enough!).

Is it an occasional problem or is it that you have never had the hdmi audio output working with windows 7 Ultimate?  If it has never worked, is hdmi even listed under playback devices when you right-click the speaker icon in the notification area and click playback devices?

  • No sound through HDMI in Radeon 6870

    Hello People from Arch Community
I have a small problem getting sound out of the HDMI of my video card.
    When I do
    lspci | grep AMD
    I get:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Barts XT [ATI Radeon HD 6800 Series]
01:00.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Barts HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6800 Series]
So the kernel finds the device. But when I do
    aplay -l
    I get:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC887 Analog [ALC887 Analog]
    Subdevices: 0/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC887 Digital [ALC887 Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    card 1: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
I noticed that the HDMI out was listed as Audio Generic, when it should be identified as HDA ATI HDMI. Whenever I choose the HDMI output through alsamixer I only get a s/pdif and I cannot modify anything. I remember that some months before when I installed Arch for the first time sound through the HDMI was working and the audio device was correctly identified. Could it be a new module or kernel path that broke the audio?
I tried using the radeon.sound=1 flag but I still could not get sound out of the HDMI. Even worst, when I use the radeon.sound=1 parameter, my screen display a 5 pixel width purple line at the left border of the screen and the rest of the screen gets squeezed. It is not too bad but still makes text look blurry.
    Could someone help me please?
Extra info: it is not hardware related, sound works fine in windows
I am not a total beginner, I know my way in the CLI but still I lack a lot of knowledge.
Another tip, around the same time, my framebuffer decoration and splash(fbcondecor, fbsplah) stopped working, I don't know if it is related.

You may find this article >Here< to be of interest.  I don't know much about Radeon audio but for your 6870 that may seem to be of relevance.
Are you using the open-source driver or the proprietary with an older X.org?  With the above article, the open-source audio seems to be slated for kernel 3.5.

  • No Sound through HDMI - Mac Mini

Hello Forum, New user to this forum, I have a problem, I have bought Mac Mini ( August,2010) for home use and recently bought LG -32LD450 - 32". I have connected my TV directly to Mac Mini using a 1.3X HDMI cable. I have video/ display - however no sound. All i can hear is sound from the Mac Mini's internal speaker. I tried to change the setting through - System preference/sound/output. It displays - LG / HDMI - however i cannot select, the setting is active with internal speakers only. Please advise how i can obtain audio from the TV.
I forgot to mention the message seen in System Preference/Sound/Output - LG TV HDMI - Settings for the Selected Device : The Selected Device has no output controls.
In addition to the above, i have tried to check the output controls through Utilities/Audio Midi Setup. Here too i am not in a position to alter HDMI Settings.
Help in this regards is highly appreciated...thanks
    Please help

Krusdublin: I am experiencing similar issues with no real solution yet:
I have a Mac Mini 2010 connected to a Sony Bravia HD TV via an HDMI cable
sound output via TV speakers was not working when I first connected the two (about 4 mos ago)
couldn't figure it out- and just used an headphone cable to connect the mac mini to a stereo
somewhere between then and a month ago I disconnected all incl. power, and reconnected as I had to re-setup my tv (all reconnected in the same outlets via HDMI) (also got rid of the stereo at this point)
then about a month ago I was back in the Sound preferences and found that I was able to get audio output via the TV speakers.
about a week or so ago I disconnected all incl. power, and reconnected as I had to re-setup my tv (all reconnected in the same outlets via HDMI)
however, about 3 days ago, sound output via TV was no longer an option
when I say it is not an option, I have two lines under name and types as follows:
    "Internal Speakers" > "Built-In Output"
    "SONY TV" > "HDMI"
when I switch from internal speakers to HDMI, I notice that the sound volume bar at the bottom of the screen goes faint, and I can't adjust the volume using the sound keys on my keyboard (bluetooth)
the speaker icon in the top right of the screen is also greyed-out and not changeable...
I notice that when I switch input on my TV aerial to the MacMini (HDMI 1) I get a little yellow triangle with exclamation mark in it, and the text: "AUDIO only" at the bottom right of the tv screen. (In not sure if I had this before or not - dont completely remember seeing it, but vaguely do...)
I've also updated my macmini whenever an update is released (within a few days)...
I've spoken with an Apple tech over the phone and went through a number of reboot (while holding down certain keys, etc.) to no avail. She then recommended that I go into the Apple store and have the mini checked out....
At the apple store, the apple tech took the machine to the back, out of sight, and returned about 20 mins later to say that it was working fine. I asked to have it hooked up to one on display - so I could see for myself. We hooked it up to an HDTV via HDMI and booted up. Went to System Preferences > Sound and selected: "Panasonic TV" as the output device. I still could not adjust the volume bar (it went greyed out) - but I could crank up the tv volume directly and get sound. Great! Sort of... While now I could get sound - it was not the same as before where I could control the sound through the mac - only directly through the TV. The Apple guy said that he didn't know what I was talking about - and said that they way the machine was now working was the proper way. He unhooked my mac mini, and gave it to me, and walked away.
Frustrated, I walked down to the Sony Store to try out the mac mini there. Same result as in the Apple store. I could control sound directly via the TV, but not through the mac mini controls.
Took the mac mini home, reconnected everything and now get sound through the TV - but I cant control it with the mac mini on-screen controls, nor the volume buttons on the mac blue tooth keyboard.
Today, I was watching a movie via itunes, hit pause, and went to do something for a few minutes. When I returned, the TV indicated 'no signal' via the HDMI (I assume because the mini went to sleep.) Tried to wake the mini - but couldn't. Had to resort to pressing the button at the back. When the mini came back, I had no sound at all coming through the TV speakers, even though the sound preferences settings were still the same. I had to resort to shutting down the mac mini, and then unplugging the power on the mini for a few minutes. Powering back up, sound was again able to comefromt eh mac through the TV speakers - but still could not control sound using the mac mini controls.......
Thats where Im at so far....
    Aarrgh.
    THOUGHTS?
    Thanks in advance,
    MAJM

I have that adapter it's just that it wont come any sound through that adapter... What should I do/buy?

  • Having problems choosing sound output through HDMI to my television, any one any ideas?

Though listed in the sounds options, I can't seem to choose a sound output to my TV through HDMI. I have sound output to headphones via the headphone socket or usb, but when I highlight to the HDMI TV option it justs returns to the top of the list, any ideas anyone?

About alsa dmix, and for the record:
On an Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU     E7500  @ 2.93GHz, the following are my finding about
quality/cpu when mixing two streams at 44khz:
    a snippet from my .asoundrc
    #converter "samplerate_best" # perfect: 16%cpu, maybe overkill
    #converter "samplerate_medium" # almost perfect: 6%cpu
    #converter "samplerate" # good: 4%cpu, definitely usable
#converter "samplerate_linear" # bad: 2%cpu, way better than default wine resampler
#converter "samplerate_order" # very bad: 2%cpu, like the default wine resampler
Here is the reference topic: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=942724
I may be wrong, but in an opensource world (code reusing), i really doubt pulseaudio could lead to better quality/cpuuse tradeoff.
Pulseaudio, being just another layer atop of alsa, could only lead to higher cpu usage.

  • Multichannel sound through HDMI

I have a late 2011 Mac Mini running Mountain Lion and being used as a media server connected to a Linn Akurate DSM. The HDMI output will only output stereo, and when using Audio Midi no choice is given to choose a multichannel output. Moreover for the optical output a choice is given for multichannel output, but it is greyed out and not available.
I am keen to get multichannel output from the HDMI. The Linn will them pass through all the channels other than R @ L to a sound processor.  Can anyone tell me how to do this?  I am afraid that Genius Bar is no help on this

I have spent hours trying to figure this problem out and how could I or these fools charginig ridiculous amounts of money to tell me it's my problem have ever known where or why this problem is even happening
Long story short I bought a Mac Mini mid 2011 and connected it straight through an hdmi cord to about a 4 year old LG LCD 42" screen with that connected by optical digital to a converter being that my panasonic surround sound only has a analog input.  When I first bought my computer everything worked fine the sound passed through the tv, to the converter and onto my surround sound speakers.  Last year I purchased a 47" LG Smart TV same setup same everything else and my sound would pass through the hdmi cord and not all the way to the surround sound, which after spending an hour on the phone with Apple only to get an answer of "I think you should buy a new surround sound....well dip my call could have paid for it....anyways tried so many different options messing with settings so on so forth only to find nothing that worked, until my roommate hooked up his late 2012 mac mini to find the sound passed through once again just fine. So here's what I did downloaded the mountain lion operating system went into garage band changed the audio output under preferences and POW back to normal
